:00:13. > :00:25.And the paraglider soaring beneath Norway's Northern Lights.
:00:26. > :00:27.Did you know that around the country right now,
:00:28. > :00:29.there are thousands of children like you caring
:00:30. > :00:33.They are called young carers and take on a lot of the jobs around
:00:34. > :00:39.They do this because their mum or dad is not well enough to do
:00:40. > :00:41.the jobs themselves - sometimes because they have problems
:00:42. > :00:44.Charlotte is a young carer who looks after her mum.
:00:45. > :00:52.One of the first elements I remember about caring for my mum
:00:53. > :00:55.was that she never really used to be able to do things that other
:00:56. > :01:00.Every so often, things would get way too much for her and she would just
:01:01. > :01:03.have to go and lie down or withdraw herself from situations.
:01:04. > :01:06.And, as a kid, that would make me feel really bad.
:01:07. > :01:10.So, I would try and make her feel happy or I would try and do things
:01:11. > :01:17.I would see other mums lifting up their kids and going running
:01:18. > :01:19.with them and stuff and I would be like,
:01:20. > :01:23."Well, why can't mum do that for me?"
:01:24. > :01:26.It was an absence of this kind of fun loving mum that I used
:01:27. > :01:32.I don't blame her for that but I knew something wasn't right.
:01:33. > :01:34.A certain teacher that really helped me realise that
:01:35. > :01:37.something really was wrong, she was one of the first
:01:38. > :01:39.people I ever told. And I got the support I needed.
:01:40. > :01:45.I just broke down in tears. I wasn't sad...
:01:46. > :01:49.It was just kind of the realisation that that was what's wrong.
:01:50. > :01:51.And at that point there was just kind of an,
:01:52. > :01:56."Oh, my God! THAT'S what's wrong!" And she nodded at me.
:01:57. > :01:59.And she said, "You know what? That's OK and we're going
:02:00. > :02:04.It sounds really cliched but at that moment, I really didn't feel
:02:05. > :02:06.like I was completely alone any more.
:02:07. > :02:10.There is a lot of experiences to be had and some of them are going to be
:02:11. > :02:13.That's OK because being a young carer most definitely
:02:14. > :02:17.Because I wouldn't be half as resilient if I hadn't
:02:18. > :02:21.I know how to deal with the disappointments
:02:22. > :02:26.and the anxieties because I've seen my mum got through it for one,
:02:27. > :02:31.and I've had to go through it with her.
:02:32. > :02:35.She's joined by Michelle Smith, from the Carers Trust Fylde Coast,

:02:44. > :02:56.Fill the topic there is a ignorance around and it needs to be, a lot of
:02:57. > :02:59.people don't understand. This is something that should be shared
:03:00. > :03:04.because it happens in everyday life and it goes on behind closed to
:03:05. > :03:05.this, whether you know it or not and people need to be educated about it
:03:06. > :03:07.because it is going on around you. Have you had any problems
:03:08. > :03:16.in the past by being a young carer? I have had bullying, people that
:03:17. > :03:21.turn ignorance into, based don't how to react and they are just plain
:03:22. > :03:29.mean and just take it out on me, like misdirected anger and it is
:03:30. > :03:36.horrible. A lot of children have to deal with what Charlotte has been
:03:37. > :03:42.through. That's right. Young people are carrying out additional tasks
:03:43. > :03:48.every day and often they are missing out on an awful lot of things that
:03:49. > :03:53.other children are doing. What sort of problems today face? The Carers
:03:54. > :03:58.Trust did research and the found out that one third of all carers are
:03:59. > :04:01.caring for a parent with mental health problems. Typically, some of
:04:02. > :04:06.our young carers will say that money is very sad or does not want to go
:04:07. > :04:10.out the house and that impact on young people, spending a lot of time
:04:11. > :04:11.worrying and potentially affecting their mental health.
:04:12. > :04:14.What would you say to people watching right now
:04:15. > :04:15.who are going through what you went through?
:04:16. > :04:29.I can only say there is only good from telling people. I found it hard
:04:30. > :04:33.to trust people after I first told people but opening up to people is
:04:34. > :04:38.one of the best things you can do. It is hard and a big wall to break
:04:39. > :04:41.down but once you have done it, there are online forums and safe
:04:42. > :04:47.communities where you can share your thoughts and feelings and it is OK.
:04:48. > :04:48.communities where you can share your What support is out there for young
:04:49. > :04:57.carers? Carers What support is out there for young
:04:58. > :05:01.of 87 independent partners who can provide emotional support and
:05:02. > :05:03.practical support. Thank you for coming in and talking to us. It will
:05:04. > :05:07.make a difference. More child refugees
:05:08. > :05:08.from the Middle Eastern country of Syria will be allowed
:05:09. > :05:11.to come to the UK. The Government has said it will be
:05:12. > :05:14.offering extra help to children who have lost their families,
:05:15. > :05:16.and are living in Syria They will work with the United
:05:17. > :05:19.Nations to decide It's not clear yet how many children
:05:20. > :05:26.will be coming to the UK. One of the world's top para gliders,
:05:27. > :05:29.Horacio Llorens, completed the trip The Spanish air acrobat
:05:30. > :05:32.flew his glider under He had to overcome snow storms,
:05:33. > :05:39.low visibility, and the wires of his glider freezing,
