0:00:12 > 0:00:14Hi, I'm Martin, with your Newsround udpate, and we're talking

0:00:14 > 0:00:22about the freeezing temperatures that have hit the UK.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28But it looks like those of you in Scotland will be

0:00:28 > 0:00:28seeing the worst of it.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30A red weather warning has been issued.

0:00:30 > 0:00:31Here's more.

0:00:31 > 0:00:34At the moment, most of the UK looks like this.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36It's cold, it's windy and it's covered in the white stuff.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38Lots of you guys have been enjoying the snow...

0:00:38 > 0:00:39THEY SCREAM

0:00:39 > 0:00:45And in some places, there's going to be a whole lot more of it.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48A red warning has been issued in Scotland by The Met Office,

0:00:48 > 0:00:50who monitor the weather.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52That's very rare.

0:00:52 > 0:01:00It's the first time in five years that one's been issued for snow.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02It's this area called the central belt -

0:01:02 > 0:01:04from Edinburgh to Glasgow - that's been affected by the warning.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07It means that problems like power cuts are expected.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10Weather experts want people to take care to stay safe in the snow.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13At least 400 schools were shut in Scotland this morning and,

0:01:13 > 0:01:16with more snow to come, there'll be plenty of time to make

0:01:16 > 0:01:18snow angels tomorrow.

0:01:18 > 0:01:25My hat came off!

0:01:25 > 0:01:26It wasn't just Scotland that saw schools close today.

0:01:26 > 0:01:31Kids around the country had a bonus day off because of the bad weather.

0:01:31 > 0:01:36Here's what some of you have getting up to.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38Hi, we're Isla, Jess and Campbell, and we're from...

0:01:38 > 0:01:40The Isle of Scotland!

0:01:40 > 0:01:42And we're off school today, and we're going...

0:01:42 > 0:01:43Sledging!

0:01:43 > 0:01:51THEY SCREAM.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59Hi, my name is Harriet, and I live in Bolton.

0:01:59 > 0:01:59It's freezing cold.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02There's only been a little bit of snow, but I'm lucky

0:02:02 > 0:02:03because my school's been open.

0:02:03 > 0:02:07It's minus five degrees.

0:02:07 > 0:02:12Today, school is closed, so I'm going to do snow angels.

0:02:12 > 0:02:13And snowballs.

0:02:13 > 0:02:20And snowmen.

0:02:20 > 0:02:21We're not at school.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23We're from Edinburgh.

0:02:23 > 0:02:24It's snowing today.

0:02:24 > 0:02:31We went sledging today.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33Hi, my name is Abby, and I'm six years old.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35I'm from Glasgow.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38My school was closed, so I get to play in the...

0:02:38 > 0:02:44snow!

0:02:44 > 0:02:51I'm going to make a snow angel.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53Well, that lot were wrapped up to stay warm.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56But it's not just the snow that makes you feel cold

0:02:56 > 0:02:58on days lilke today - there's also something called

0:02:58 > 0:03:01the wind chill factor.

0:03:01 > 0:03:02Sounds interesting.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05So what is it?

0:03:05 > 0:03:09It is absolutely freezing at the moment, but did you know

0:03:09 > 0:03:11that the temperature we feel is different to the actual

0:03:11 > 0:03:15temperature of the air around us?

0:03:15 > 0:03:18Now, outside the studios here at Newsround, it says it's

0:03:18 > 0:03:20around minus one degrees, but it also says it

0:03:20 > 0:03:22feels like minus seven.

0:03:22 > 0:03:29Now, that's because of something called the wind-chill factor.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31Weather experts often call wind-chill the 'feels

0:03:31 > 0:03:34like' temperature.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37It's worked out using the air temperature, humidity -

0:03:37 > 0:03:41that's how much water vapour is in the air - and wind speeds.

0:03:41 > 0:03:44All this information is combined with the science of how heat is lost

0:03:44 > 0:03:47from the human body.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50So, on a cold, windy day like today, why does it feel even

0:03:50 > 0:03:57colder than it really is?!

0:03:57 > 0:04:01On a calm day, our bodies insulate us.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04We give off heat, so we warm the air around us.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07It's a bit like having a warm force field, or blanket.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10But when it's cold and windy, the breeze hits the face and cools

0:04:10 > 0:04:13the skin to almost the same temperature as the air.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17It essentially blows the blanket away, so we feel much colder.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20So, there you have it, wind-chill!

0:04:20 > 0:04:23Pretty cool, eh?

0:04:23 > 0:04:28Woo!

0:04:28 > 0:04:34It is so windy! Help!

0:04:35 > 0:04:42This pair is having a great time exploring his snowy enclosure at

0:04:42 > 0:04:45Chester Zoo. Animals like this tiger braved the weather to get fresh air

0:04:45 > 0:04:48and some decided to see what it tasted like. Why not?

0:04:48 > 0:04:50Remember, there's loads more from Newsround online.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53Head there to try out our snowy quiz, and take part in our vote

0:04:53 > 0:04:56to choose the worst book baddie for World Book Day.

0:04:56 > 0:04:57That's your lot for today.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00Have a good one!
