0:00:03 > 0:00:05Good morning, I'm Jenny, live with your Newsround update this

0:00:05 > 0:00:08bank holiday Monday.

0:00:08 > 0:00:10You won't want to miss all this!

0:00:10 > 0:00:12The UK is battered by Storm Katie, and...

0:00:12 > 0:00:15why less-than-cute animals are missing out.

0:00:15 > 0:00:16It's Newsround.

0:00:26 > 0:00:28First this morning, Storm Katie has hit the UK,

0:00:28 > 0:00:30leaving thousands of homes without power.

0:00:30 > 0:00:34Southern England and Wales have seen the worst of the storms,

0:00:34 > 0:00:37with some flights cancelled because of very strong winds.

0:00:37 > 0:00:42The bad weather is expected to ease later on today.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45Now, on the news we often hear about animals that are endangered

0:00:45 > 0:00:46or facing extinction.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48But have you noticed how most of those animals

0:00:48 > 0:00:49are usually pretty cute?

0:00:49 > 0:00:53Well what about the not-so-cute animals?

0:00:53 > 0:00:55A study has found that ugly animals are struggling to get

0:00:55 > 0:00:56the same attention.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58Here's Hayley.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01SQUEAKING.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03It's like something from a nightmare.

0:01:03 > 0:01:08A gargoyle face, a crumbling nose, fleshy wings and a loud,

0:01:08 > 0:01:10high-pitched squeak!

0:01:10 > 0:01:12SQUEAKING.

0:01:12 > 0:01:14This is the orange leaf-nosed bat!

0:01:14 > 0:01:19And it's probably not going to win a beauty contest anytime soon.

0:01:19 > 0:01:23But Australian researchers say this endangered mammal,

0:01:23 > 0:01:26and many others like it, deserve a lot more attention

0:01:26 > 0:01:28than they're getting.

0:01:28 > 0:01:32A new study has found a lot of animals in Australia are missing

0:01:32 > 0:01:34out on funding and research, because, well, they're just

0:01:34 > 0:01:37not pretty enough.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40The study looked at 331 Australian mammals and put them into three

0:01:40 > 0:01:46categories - the good, the bad and the ugly.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48We all know the good ones - the cute animals that people

0:01:48 > 0:01:49tend to love.

0:01:49 > 0:01:54Creatures like kangaroos, koalas and echidnas.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57The bad ones are often pests - they need to be watched

0:01:57 > 0:02:00so that they don't harm other animals or the environment.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03They include cats, rabbits and foxes.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06And then there's the ugly.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09They're the animals that often come out at night and we normally don't

0:02:09 > 0:02:12pay much attention to them.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14Creatures like bats, rats and flying foxes.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17It's this last group that could be in danger of becoming extinct,

0:02:17 > 0:02:22which is a big problem, because every animal plays

0:02:22 > 0:02:26an important role in the ecosystem.

0:02:26 > 0:02:31For example, small bats can eat up to 1,000 mosquitoes an hour.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34So fewer bats could mean more mosquitoes!

0:02:34 > 0:02:37Scientists think the country's ugly animals deserve just as much

0:02:37 > 0:02:40attention as the cute and cuddly ones.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43So, Australians are being asked to be citizen scientists -

0:02:43 > 0:02:46regular people who help keep tabs on the animals living around them.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50Have a look for yourself.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53Up close, you might discover even the so-called ugly ones can actually

0:02:53 > 0:03:01be pretty cute!

0:03:01 > 0:03:07Fancy getting yours hands on your very own virtual-reality system?

0:03:07 > 0:03:10Well, deliveries of the long-awaited Oculus Rift headsets are being made

0:03:10 > 0:03:11to homes around the world this morning.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13The goggles allow users to enter a completley

0:03:13 > 0:03:15computer generated world.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19They've been available to pre-order since January.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21But with a price tag of ?500, you'll have to start

0:03:21 > 0:03:23saving your pocket money.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26Next - are you addicted to tech?

0:03:26 > 0:03:29That's the question the latest Newsround special is asking.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32We set a year 7 class an epic challenge to find out if technology

0:03:32 > 0:03:35is taking over their lives.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37Here's a taster of what to expect.

0:03:37 > 0:03:41Could you handle it?

0:03:41 > 0:03:47We're going to split this class into three different groups.

0:03:47 > 0:03:52Now, the first group is going to be able to use technology

0:03:52 > 0:03:57whenever you want.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59The second group will only be allowed to use technology for two

0:03:59 > 0:04:03hours a day over the next three days.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06The final group won't be able to use any technology whatsoever

0:04:06 > 0:04:12for the next three days.

0:04:15 > 0:04:20It says here that using tech before bedtime can also affect your sleep.

0:04:20 > 0:04:21Mum!

0:04:21 > 0:04:24Mum!

0:04:24 > 0:04:26I can't join in.

0:04:26 > 0:04:28I miss it a lot.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31I don't know what to do with myself, I'm just so bored.

0:04:31 > 0:04:37I haven't missed them as much as I thought I would.

0:04:37 > 0:04:47Maybe we should take a step back from it and...go outside.

0:04:47 > 0:04:49That Newsround Special - Is Tech Taking Over?

0:04:49 > 0:04:52- is on CBBC today at 4.25, so don't miss it.

0:05:13 > 0:05:15and adding to your skill set.

0:05:17 > 0:05:20Use these tools to do something creative and

0:05:20 > 0:05:22express your creativity.

0:05:22 > 0:05:26And also use these tools to learn new skills.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28You sort of have to take a look at yourself, going,

0:05:28 > 0:05:31is it really that important for me to check in on what the latest

0:05:31 > 0:05:32cat video is?

0:05:32 > 0:05:36Probably not.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39Finally, a koala has received a police escort to save it

0:05:39 > 0:05:40from being injured.

0:05:40 > 0:05:42This furry little guy wandered onto a busy road in Brisbane,

0:05:42 > 0:05:44Australia.

0:05:44 > 0:05:472 motorists captured this footage of the koala taking a casual stroll

0:05:47 > 0:05:52along the road, stopping all the traffic.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54The police helped shepherd it to safety, staying closeby

0:05:54 > 0:05:56until the koala climbed up into a tree.
