:02:33. > :02:37.On the July first, 1916, British soldiers were sent to fight

:02:38. > :02:39.a battle that was supposed to finish World War One.

:02:40. > :02:42.But, by the end of the Battle of the Somme, more than a million

:02:43. > :02:47.Even now people can't agree on whether it was the right decision

:02:48. > :02:52.100 years ago, Britain and its allies were

:02:53. > :02:54.For two long years, both sides slogged it out,

:02:55. > :03:02.firing at each other from trenches like this one.

:03:03. > :03:04.The British were fighting here and the Germans were over there.

:03:05. > :03:09.After all that time, no one was making any progress.

:03:10. > :03:14.So, the people in charge of the British Army came up

:03:15. > :03:19.They hit the Germans as hard as they could with artillery

:03:20. > :03:32.The plant was from there... They were wrong and the Germans were

:03:33. > :03:39.waiting. They weren't able to take them as planned. The soldiers were

:03:40. > :03:43.met with a wall of bombs and bullets. 20,000 were killed and

:03:44. > :03:49.40,000 were wounded. In just the first day. Many were just teenagers.

:03:50. > :03:53.They saw it as a big adventure but the reality was very different. Lots

:03:54. > :03:57.of death and things young people should never experience. Even though

:03:58. > :04:00.tens of thousands of soldiers were being killed in these fields, the

:04:01. > :04:08.Army commanders decided the soldiers must fight on. The result? Even more

:04:09. > :04:13.lives lost. It had a huge effect back home. Groups of men from the

:04:14. > :04:17.same towns and cities volunteered in huge amounts of people were lost.

:04:18. > :04:21.With the news coming through that thousands were not coming back home,

:04:22. > :04:25.it was only a matter of time before families were expecting a knock on

:04:26. > :04:29.her door to inform them they had lost somebody. In the four months

:04:30. > :04:33.that it lasted, more than 1 million soldiers died on both sides. People

:04:34. > :04:37.in charge said it had to be done to win the war. But others argue that

:04:38. > :04:41.so many young men should never have died. Even today, you can see the

:04:42. > :04:48.results of the Battle all around us in the UK. In your hometown, there

:04:49. > :04:51.is properly a memorial to the soldiers who fought and died on the

:04:52. > :04:55.Somme. It was a battle of it changed Britain. They will be hearing more

:04:56. > :04:59.from Martin and France throughout this week. I'm back right here in
