:03:42. > :03:45.On the July first, 1916, British soldiers were sent to fight

:03:46. > :03:47.a battle that was supposed to finish World War One.

:03:48. > :03:50.But, by the end of the Battle of the Somme, more than a million

:03:51. > :03:55.Even now people can't agree on whether it was the right

:03:56. > :03:56.decision or a huge mistake. Here's Martin.

:03:57. > :03:58.100 years ago, Britain and its allies were

:03:59. > :04:01.For two long years, both sides slogged it out,

:04:02. > :04:05.firing at each other from trenches like this one.

:04:06. > :04:07.The British were fighting here and the Germans were over there.

:04:08. > :04:11.After all that time, no one was making any progress.

:04:12. > :04:14.So, the people in charge of the British Army came up

:04:15. > :04:19.They hit the Germans as hard as they could with artillery

:04:20. > :04:23.The plan was from there to take the land from the Germans.

:04:24. > :04:25.But they were wrong and the Germans were waiting for them.

:04:26. > :04:27.Unfortunately, the Germans prepared these positions very well.

:04:28. > :04:33.And we weren't able to take them as planned.

:04:34. > :04:36.The soldiers were met with a wall of bombs and bullets.

:04:37. > :04:38.20,000 were killed and 40,000 were wounded on just

:04:39. > :04:45.Many were just teenagers - very young.

:04:46. > :04:49.They saw it as a big adventure but the reality was very different.

:04:50. > :04:53.Lots of death and things young people should never experience.

:04:54. > :04:55.Even though tens of thousands of soldiers were being killed

:04:56. > :04:57.in these fields, the Army commanders decided

:04:58. > :05:04.The result? Even more lives lost.

:05:05. > :05:11.Often whole groups of men from the same towns and cities

:05:12. > :05:13.volunteered and huge amounts of people were lost.

:05:14. > :05:16.With the news coming through that thousands were not coming back home,

:05:17. > :05:19.it was only a matter of time before families were expecting a knock

:05:20. > :05:24.on their door to inform them they had lost somebody.

:05:25. > :05:26.In the four months that it lasted, more than one million

:05:27. > :05:34.People in charge said it had to be done to win the war.

:05:35. > :05:37.But others argue that so many young men should never have died.

:05:38. > :05:40.Even today, you can see the results of the Battle all around us

:05:41. > :05:44.In your hometown, there is probably a memorial to the soldiers

:05:45. > :05:54.It was a battle that changed Britain.

:05:55. > :05:56.We will have more throughout the week.
