0:00:07 > 0:00:10Coming up: We find out about the battle that was supposed
0:00:10 > 0:00:12to end World War One.
0:00:12 > 0:00:14We find out how to do that Icelandic clap.
0:00:14 > 0:00:19And we bring you all the action from Wimbledon.
0:00:24 > 0:00:27First, England's players and fans are still recovering today
0:00:27 > 0:00:30from the side's shock exit from the European Championships.
0:00:30 > 0:00:33The Three Lions were beaten 2-1 by Iceland, the lowest ranked
0:00:33 > 0:00:36team in the competition.
0:00:36 > 0:00:38The manager, Roy Hodgson, stepped down from his job
0:00:38 > 0:00:42immediately after the match.
0:00:42 > 0:00:45Former England captain Alan Shearer called it the worst performance he'd
0:00:45 > 0:00:50ever seen by an England team.
0:00:50 > 0:00:52Here's what some kids in Manchester thought about last
0:00:52 > 0:00:53night's performance.
0:00:53 > 0:00:55When England got knocked out, I felt distraught and mindblown,
0:00:55 > 0:00:57cos I thought they would have got further.
0:00:57 > 0:01:00Me and my family couldn't believe what we were seeing.
0:01:00 > 0:01:02I expected them to do well because they've got young players
0:01:02 > 0:01:05who do well in the Premier League.
0:01:05 > 0:01:08I thought Iceland should have won, because they looked like they wanted
0:01:08 > 0:01:10it more than England.
0:01:10 > 0:01:12Now England are out, I'll be supporting Poland
0:01:12 > 0:01:14in the quarterfinal.
0:01:14 > 0:01:16I'll be supporting France.
0:01:16 > 0:01:18I'll be supporting Wales, because I think they have a really
0:01:18 > 0:01:24good chance of getting to the final.
0:01:24 > 0:01:28We asked you lot at home to get in touch, too, and year three
0:01:28 > 0:01:31from Newport Community School said, "All of us who were supporting
0:01:31 > 0:01:33England are feeling very sad about their defeat.
0:01:33 > 0:01:35However we also have some Iceland fans who are both surprised
0:01:35 > 0:01:41and impressed by the result."
0:01:41 > 0:01:42Thanks, guys.
0:01:42 > 0:01:45Anyone watching the match last night may have noticed some very organised
0:01:45 > 0:01:46clapping from the Iceland fans?
0:01:46 > 0:01:51Jen has been finding out how they do it.
0:01:51 > 0:01:52My name is Magnus.
0:01:52 > 0:01:53And we are from Iceland!
0:01:53 > 0:01:54Who starts it?
0:01:54 > 0:01:57How do you get involved?
0:01:57 > 0:01:59The drum starts and everybody's hands go up, then, you know,
0:01:59 > 0:02:09on the drum, like boom-boom, and everybody follow him.
0:02:13 > 0:02:18On the first of July, 1916, British soldiers were sent to fight
0:02:18 > 0:02:22a battle that was supposed to finish World War One.
0:02:22 > 0:02:25But by the end of the Battle of the Somme, more than one million
0:02:25 > 0:02:27young soldiers had lost their lives.
0:02:27 > 0:02:29Even now, people can't agree on whether it was the right
0:02:29 > 0:02:31decision or a huge mistake.
0:02:31 > 0:02:32Here's Martin.
0:02:32 > 0:02:34100 years ago, Britain and its allies were
0:02:34 > 0:02:37at war with Germany.
0:02:37 > 0:02:40For two long years, both sides slogged it out,
0:02:40 > 0:02:46firing at each other from trenches like this one.
0:02:46 > 0:02:48The British were fighting here and the Germans were over there.
0:02:48 > 0:02:51After all that time, no one was making any progress.
0:02:51 > 0:02:52No one was winning.
0:02:52 > 0:02:55So, the people in charge of the British Army came up
0:02:55 > 0:02:57with an idea to win the war.
0:02:57 > 0:02:59They hit the Germans as hard as they could with artillery
0:02:59 > 0:03:02shells and bombs.
0:03:02 > 0:03:05The plan was from there to take the land from the Germans.
0:03:05 > 0:03:08But they were wrong and the Germans were waiting for them.
0:03:08 > 0:03:10Unfortunately, the Germans prepared these positions very well.
0:03:10 > 0:03:15And we weren't able to take them as planned.
0:03:15 > 0:03:18The soldiers were met with a wall of bombs and bullets.
0:03:18 > 0:03:2020,000 were killed and 40,000 were wounded on just
0:03:20 > 0:03:23the first day.
0:03:23 > 0:03:26Many were just teenagers - very young.
0:03:26 > 0:03:30They saw it as a big adventure but the reality was very different.
0:03:30 > 0:03:34Lots of death and things young people should never experience.
0:03:34 > 0:03:36Even though tens of thousands of soldiers were being killed
0:03:36 > 0:03:38in these fields, the Army commanders decided
0:03:38 > 0:03:40the soldiers must fight on.
0:03:40 > 0:03:41The result?
0:03:41 > 0:03:45Even more lives lost.
0:03:45 > 0:03:48It had a huge effect back home.
0:03:48 > 0:03:51Often whole groups of men from the same towns and cities
0:03:51 > 0:03:53volunteered and huge amounts of people were lost.
0:03:53 > 0:03:55With the news coming through that thousands were not coming back home,
0:03:55 > 0:03:59it was only a matter of time before families were expecting a knock
0:03:59 > 0:04:05on their door to inform them they had lost somebody.
0:04:05 > 0:04:08In the four months that it lasted, more than one million
0:04:08 > 0:04:11soldiers died on both sides.
0:04:11 > 0:04:14People in charge said it had to be done to win the war.
0:04:14 > 0:04:18But others argue that so many young men should never have died.
0:04:18 > 0:04:21Even today, you can see the results of the Battle all around us
0:04:21 > 0:04:22in the UK.
0:04:22 > 0:04:24In your hometown, there is probably a memorial to the soldiers
0:04:24 > 0:04:26who fought and died on the Somme.
0:04:26 > 0:04:32It was a battle that changed Britain.
0:04:32 > 0:04:35It's the second day of Wimbledon, and Andy Murray is currently
0:04:35 > 0:04:38in action in his first round match.
0:04:38 > 0:04:41A short time ago, Murray was leading comfortably
0:04:41 > 0:04:44against fellow Briton Liam Broady.
0:04:44 > 0:04:46Also today in the women's draw, defending champ Serena Williams
0:04:46 > 0:04:48breezed through her first game.
0:04:48 > 0:04:50And right now Britain's number one Johanna Konta is up
0:04:50 > 0:04:53against the Puerto Rican, Monica Pweeg.
0:04:53 > 0:04:56That's all from me.
0:04:56 > 0:05:00Bye-bye.
