:00:00. > :00:00.It's Wednesday morning, Ayshah here live with Newsround.

:00:00. > :00:07.Here's what's coming up: The dramatic rescue attempt

:00:08. > :00:13.And the story of the amazing men from India who fought

:00:14. > :00:27.Tennis first, and Britain's number one Andy Murray has beaten fellow

:00:28. > :00:31.Brit Liam Broady in the opening round at Wimbledon.

:00:32. > :00:33.It took Murray just one hour and 43 minutes to end

:00:34. > :00:37.the 22 year old's first match on Centre Court,

:00:38. > :00:44.Murray will now face Yen-Hsun Lu in the second round on Thursday.

:00:45. > :00:46.Murray was pretty happy with his first round performance

:00:47. > :01:00.First matches are always tricky. It was pretty breezy at the beginning.

:01:01. > :01:03.Obviously merely have never played each other before although we

:01:04. > :01:07.practised a lot. It is not easy playing someone you know. I did OK.

:01:08. > :01:10.And in the women's draw, Johanna Konta is back in action

:01:11. > :01:13.Johanna was doing quite well against Monica Puig,

:01:14. > :01:18.She starts back on Court One at one this afternoon.

:01:19. > :01:21.100 years ago, Britain was in the middle of the biggest

:01:22. > :01:29.World War One was between Britain and Germany, and was also fought

:01:30. > :01:32.So how did tens of thousands of Indian soldiers,

:01:33. > :01:35.from the other side of world, end up fighting someone else's war?

:01:36. > :01:56.100 years ago Britain was one of the biggest wars the world had ever

:01:57. > :01:59.seen. I am at the War Memorial which remembers the soldiers who fought

:02:00. > :02:03.and died here fighting on the British side. Not every soldier came

:02:04. > :02:08.from Britain. Lots were from many different parts of the world. One of

:02:09. > :02:13.the countries that played a big part in helping was India. I think they

:02:14. > :02:19.were all heroes. They were really brave. They risked their lives to

:02:20. > :02:24.save Britain. We would not have freedom if it was not for them. I

:02:25. > :02:31.could not have left everything behind to go somewhere different. In

:02:32. > :02:34.1918, Britain was at war. They needed millions of soldiers to

:02:35. > :02:39.fight. At the time Britain built lots of countries around the world.

:02:40. > :02:42.One of those countries was India. Back then it included not only

:02:43. > :02:47.modern India but countries like Bangladesh and Pakistan. They wanted

:02:48. > :02:52.to be seen representing the British Empire. The bigot incentive on

:02:53. > :02:56.completion was to get their independence and run the country by

:02:57. > :03:00.themselves. -- the bigger incentive. More than a million men left India

:03:01. > :03:04.and travelled thousands of miles to fight alongside the world, including

:03:05. > :03:13.here in France. Many would not return. This man was one of those

:03:14. > :03:19.soldiers. He joined the Indian army straight out of school. He fought

:03:20. > :03:22.here in France. On the 10th of March in 1915, he and his fellow soldiers

:03:23. > :03:26.were about to go into their first major battle because at the time

:03:27. > :03:32.this village was controlled by the Germans. The British Army's job was

:03:33. > :03:37.to drive them out. Caught in the middle of this huge battle was a

:03:38. > :03:45.British soldier, Captain George Henderson. Badly wounded and in

:03:46. > :03:50.desperate need of help. Mange it refused to leave a fellow soldier B

:03:51. > :03:55.final -- behind. He grabbed Captain George, slung him in a wheelbarrow

:03:56. > :04:00.and rushed him away to safety. It ultimately saved his fellow

:04:01. > :04:07.soldier's life. But while saving him Mantou was shot and died from his

:04:08. > :04:14.injuries. He is a hero. An extremely brave and courageous man. He has

:04:15. > :04:18.chosen someone else's life over his. He was just one of the many who came

:04:19. > :04:22.to fight alongside the British. This monument remembers the sacrifices

:04:23. > :04:27.those Indian soldiers made for Britain. But over the years their

:04:28. > :04:33.bravery and loyalty has almost been forgotten. So how should we remember

:04:34. > :04:39.them? I think their story should be told and people should learn it in

:04:40. > :04:46.class. It is a big part of history. If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't

:04:47. > :04:51.be here living our lives how we are. I want to know my ancestors, if they

:04:52. > :04:57.had been in the war, because I want to acknowledge that they were brave.

:04:58. > :05:03.I feel really proud because I am a seek and there were seats fighting

:05:04. > :05:06.in that war as well. For all I know one of my ancestors was there. It is

:05:07. > :05:12.very special. On Friday I will be back here

:05:13. > :05:17.because there is a special event taking place marking 100 years since

:05:18. > :05:20.the battle took place. I will be giving you some special report on

:05:21. > :05:26.Thursday as well. In the meantime, head online where we have got loads

:05:27. > :05:28.of World War I and the Battle of the Somme. For now, back to the studio.

:05:29. > :05:31.Last up, to the rescue of a blue whale in California in the US.

:05:32. > :05:34.It was caught in a fishing line near the shore.

:05:35. > :05:36.Marine experts got close enough to cut some of the rope away,

:05:37. > :05:41.but there's still some left. They'll try to help again today.

:05:42. > :05:45.That's all from me and the team this morning.

:05:46. > :05:46.Newsround's back this afternoonat 4:20pm.

:05:47. > :05:53.Go online for all the latest. We'll see you soon.
