:01:21. > :01:28.I know friends that the water's up to their driveway,

:01:29. > :01:30.and one of our friends is about to get flooding

:01:31. > :01:33.in their house pretty soon, so it's kind of a scary experience,

:04:06. > :04:09.But have you ever wondered were they came from and why we use them?

:04:10. > :04:15.They're used not just online but in everyday life.

:04:16. > :04:20.Did you know the hashtag symbol first popped up in the '70s

:04:21. > :04:26.and was used by computer experts as a way to make notes in coding.

:04:27. > :04:38.And by the '90s, the symbol was used by the Internet relay chat.

:04:39. > :04:40.That's an old messaging app that used hashtags

:04:41. > :04:44.2007 was the birth of the hashtag as we know it.

:04:45. > :04:47.That was the very first time hashtags were used on Twitter

:04:48. > :04:50.And this became the normal way that people tweeted.

:04:51. > :04:53.Other social networks like Instagram, Facebook and even

:04:54. > :04:58.The word hashtag is now even in the Oxford English Dictionary.

:04:59. > :05:00.Hashtags are used in everything from elections...

:05:01. > :05:14.and even massive TV shows use it to get people talking.

:05:15. > :05:16.Now people from all over the world connect using
