:03:46. > :03:51.In many parts of Australia, their numbers are declining

:03:52. > :03:54.because of habitat destruction, so researchers are trying to figure

:03:55. > :03:56.out which are the most important areas to keep protected.

:03:57. > :04:02.You need a lot of stamina, because you have to cover a lot

:04:03. > :04:07.of ground and look under each tree for scats.

:04:08. > :04:11.For Maya, that is not a problem, she is playing, and she is 20 times

:04:12. > :04:17.And most importantly for conservation, she is 150% more

:04:18. > :04:19.accurate, so that means she finding scats where humans are not.

:04:20. > :04:24.For habitat protection, this is critical.

:04:25. > :04:27.But even the best detectors need to keep their skills up

:04:28. > :04:33.It's very simple, because we don't want to take her into the bush

:04:34. > :04:36.and for her to start indicating on possum poo or Eastern grey poo.

:04:37. > :04:39.We want to make sure that Maya knows what koala poo is,

:04:40. > :04:45.and excludes any other marsupial poo.

:04:46. > :04:48.If you think about it, dogs don't go to work for a salary.
