:00:58. > :01:00.movements. The Government announced this morning that driverless cars
:01:01. > :01:05.will soon be a reality on British roads. So lots of experiments like
:01:06. > :01:12.this one are happening across the country on special test tracks. The
:01:13. > :01:17.BBC's technology correspondent, Rory Cellan-Jones, was able to test one
:01:18. > :01:20.out. This car is being tested in a controlled environment but from next
:01:21. > :01:24.year more advance vehicles with lots of sensors on board will be allowed
:01:25. > :01:28.out on to the open road. Then we will see how the great British
:01:29. > :01:31.public reacts to the idea of driverless cars.
:01:32. > :01:35.In America, driverless cars have already been tested on roads in
:01:36. > :01:39.California but some people are cautious about seeing them on the
:01:40. > :01:44.open road here in this country. We are not going to suddenly see all
:01:45. > :01:50.the vehicles coming on to the road driverless. You will see high levels
:01:51. > :01:55.of automatication and a small number of cars that can be driven safely
:01:56. > :01:59.without a driver. This project is looking at how self-driving cars
:02:00. > :02:03.might learn to communicate with each other for safety. But over the
:02:04. > :02:06.coming months scientists will need to work very hard to make sure
:02:07. > :02:31.driverless cars have a future on British roads.
