:01:04. > :01:05.I've been looking at what's being done to make
:01:06. > :01:18.In this corner of Europe first world war shells explode
:01:19. > :01:31.The Belgium bomb disposal team deal with at least 200
:01:32. > :01:37.tonnes of unexploded bombs and grenades every year.
:01:38. > :01:40.During the First World War all along the western front,
:01:41. > :01:46.One in three failed to explode leaving approximately
:01:47. > :01:52.500 million left unexploded, in the ground.
:01:53. > :01:54.Farmers are often the ones that discover shells
:01:55. > :01:56.buried in the earth when they are ploughing
:01:57. > :02:01.Many of these are unidentified and are left at the side of the road
:02:02. > :02:13.So, if you look at the length and the fuses, this is an explosive.
:02:14. > :02:21.The first job is to clean them up, and work out if they are traditional
:02:22. > :02:27.explosive shells, or ones that contain deadly chemicals.
:02:28. > :02:31.Even after 100 years, lives are still at risk.
:02:32. > :02:34.The chemical shells are eventually destroyed in a special sealed
:02:35. > :02:39.chamber to stop the toxic gases from escaping.
:02:40. > :02:42.Traditional explosives like these are treated definitely.
:02:43. > :02:45.Shells, bombs, grenades and bullets forced to the surface
:02:46. > :02:49.through years of rainfall, frost and ploughed fields
:02:50. > :02:56.Here, finally, controlled explosions destroy the deadly devices, 100
