:00:27. > :00:34.Since 1970, two top animal charities have been recording

:00:35. > :00:40.They've used the information to raise awareness about the decline

:00:41. > :00:42.of critically endangered species like the mountain gorilla,

:00:43. > :00:52.Until now, the World Wildlife Fund and London Zoological Society had

:00:53. > :00:54.estimated that wildlife numbers across the globe had fallen by

:00:55. > :01:03.But, by using a new way of working it all out, they now think that

:01:04. > :01:09.In reality, they've more than halved.

:01:10. > :01:12.The number of land animals, like some elephants and rhinos, have

:01:13. > :01:15.fallen by 39%, because of hunting and the fact that lots of areas

:01:16. > :01:17.Marine species, particularly whales, have declined

:01:18. > :01:19.by 39% too thanks to overfishing and pollution of the sea.

:01:20. > :01:22.But worst hit are freshwater creatures like certain species

:01:23. > :01:25.of frog, down by 76% as both loss of habitat

:01:26. > :01:29.The charities now say effective and urgent action is needed to stop

:01:30. > :01:34.Well, joining me now from our London studio is Colin Butfield

:01:35. > :01:47.What is causing the decline? The big thing is people are damaging

:01:48. > :01:55.animal's homes. Things like chopping down forests. Overfishing in the

:01:56. > :01:58.oceans, catching too many action do you mean? And lots of

:01:59. > :02:14.viewers will be thinking what can we People need to make sure that the

:02:15. > :02:18.things that we buy are protecting these areas and so that people who

:02:19. > :02:24.rely on them can have them for future generations. What can be got

:02:25. > :02:33.home to help? Thousands of schools getting packs on how to do things to

:02:34. > :02:36.help. We can send those out. Tell your parents that buying anything

:02:37. > :02:39.out of wood or paper and make sure that is from a sustainable source.
