0:00:13 > 0:00:15Good morning - I'm Ricky.
0:00:15 > 0:00:17First today, you'll probably have heard about the big
0:00:17 > 0:00:20question of the moment - how can we cut the amount of plastic
0:00:20 > 0:00:23we use and throw away?
0:00:23 > 0:00:26More than eight million tonnes of plastic ends up in the world's
0:00:26 > 0:00:27oceans each year.
0:00:27 > 0:00:29That's a truckload every minute!
0:00:29 > 0:00:32So, what's the problem with plastic?
0:00:32 > 0:00:39Martin's been finding out...
0:00:40 > 0:00:44These are trash islands in the Caribbean. It looks like a stretch
0:00:44 > 0:00:49of land but it's floating rubbish like plastic bags, spoons and
0:00:49 > 0:00:56bottles. They are created by currents in the ocean. Sadly, this
0:00:56 > 0:01:01is not the only place in the world where plastic pollution is a
0:01:01 > 0:01:05problem.Plastic is all around the planet on every shoreline, it's even
0:01:05 > 0:01:09down to The Deep ocean, places we have never visited, we go there for
0:01:09 > 0:01:14the first time and our rubbish has beaten us there.Back in the day,
0:01:14 > 0:01:17milk and fizzy drinks used to be bought in glass bottles and food
0:01:17 > 0:01:22would be wrapped in paper. Now, plastic is lots of things we use
0:01:22 > 0:01:27every day and it is really useful. 300 million tonnes are produced each
0:01:27 > 0:01:33year, but 40% of that is. We will only use once before it's thrown
0:01:33 > 0:01:46away, like straws, crisp packets, bottles and carrier bags. How
0:01:47 > 0:01:48bottles and carrier bags. How does plastic end up in the ocean? Some of
0:01:48 > 0:01:51it is blown in, lots of it comes from rivers, some can come a long
0:01:51 > 0:01:53way, some from ships at sea, Summers left by tourists on beaches. Some
0:01:53 > 0:01:56enters by the toilet. There's a whole range of ways it can get
0:01:56 > 0:01:59there, the problem is once it's there that is where it will stay.
0:01:59 > 0:02:03Scientists are warning that within the next 30 years the amount of
0:02:03 > 0:02:08plastic in our oceans could outweigh the fish. Each year, 100,000 animals
0:02:08 > 0:02:13in the sea are killed by plastic. It can hurt on track them and it they
0:02:13 > 0:02:18can also mistake it for food. One in three sea turtles and 90% of sea
0:02:18 > 0:02:27birds have eaten it. It ends up on our dinner table, are we eating
0:02:27 > 0:02:30plastic as well?We recently looked at fish collected locally, of 500
0:02:30 > 0:02:35fish we found a third had small quantities of plastic in their gut.
0:02:35 > 0:02:39It's not a cause for concern for eating their special, the quantities
0:02:39 > 0:02:42are quite small, unless we do something about it the quantities
0:02:42 > 0:02:48fish, birds and will increase. There are lots of groups trying to help
0:02:48 > 0:02:50tackle plastic pollution and the government is promising to do more.
0:02:50 > 0:02:56But there are ways we can all help right now. Here are Richard's top
0:02:56 > 0:03:00tips. Make sure you always throw your rubbish in the bin. If you
0:03:00 > 0:03:04don't need something, don't use it. And of course, the cycle when you
0:03:04 > 0:03:05can.
0:03:05 > 0:03:09If you want to know more about how plastic affects our planet head over
0:03:09 > 0:03:12to Newsround online where we've got a full guide.
0:03:12 > 0:03:14Next, are teen romances bad for your grades?
0:03:14 > 0:03:16Well, that's what one headteacher in North Wales thinks,
0:03:16 > 0:03:18so much so that he wrote to his pupils telling
0:03:18 > 0:03:23them to avoid them.
0:03:23 > 0:03:30Well, let's hear what some Year 10s think ...
0:03:30 > 0:03:33I don't think teachers should be allowed to tell you what you want to
0:03:33 > 0:03:36do because it's your private life and you should be able to do what
0:03:36 > 0:03:43you want.If you have a boyfriend or girlfriend, you won't be able to
0:03:43 > 0:03:46think straight, but you could be the same about friends or family
0:03:46 > 0:03:55problems.Situations where people are not revising or doing the work.
0:03:55 > 0:03:58MIB on everyone else's mind whether you will break up so that would
0:03:58 > 0:04:01cause a lot of drama between not just the people involved in the
0:04:01 > 0:04:06relationship but everybody around them.It affects their graves
0:04:06 > 0:04:10personally, then that could be fair enough, but to say it to a whole
0:04:10 > 0:04:13group of people when you don't know if it's affecting them or not, I
0:04:13 > 0:04:18think it's on fire. What you do in your free time is up to you, if you
0:04:18 > 0:04:22choose to revise and do the studying menu will get the best grades, it's
0:04:22 > 0:04:25up to you what you choose to do.
0:04:25 > 0:04:27We've been asking for your views on this one and loads
0:04:27 > 0:04:30of you have been voting on the Newsround website.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35Finally - move over, Wall-E , there are some
0:04:35 > 0:04:38new cleaning droids in town.
0:04:38 > 0:04:40These four dirt-busting bots were put through their paces
0:04:40 > 0:04:42at a train station in Germany.
0:04:42 > 0:04:45They raced against each other as part of a contest to choose
0:04:45 > 0:04:49a new cleaning machine to keep the German stations spick and span.
0:04:49 > 0:04:53I think this guy needs to get a wriggle on!
