:00:26. > :00:29.Hello and welcome to Newsround, I'm Nell. I'm Leah. Lotdz to get

:00:29. > :00:33.through tonight, including some of this.

:00:33. > :00:37.We find out just how close man came to not making it to the moon.

:00:37. > :00:41.And we tell you who's going where and just what goes on during a

:00:41. > :00:44.frantic last day of football's transfer window.

:00:44. > :00:48.Before all of that, to South Africa, where a group of miners have been

:00:48. > :00:54.charged with the murder of their work mates even though they were

:00:54. > :00:59.actually shot by police. 34 people were killed during violent protests

:00:59. > :01:02.over miners' pay last week. Under an old law, the miners have been

:01:02. > :01:05.blamed and it's causing outrage and the country's top politicians are

:01:05. > :01:09.asking for the decision to be reviewed. This time last week,

:01:09. > :01:13.people across South Africa gathered to mourn. It all started when

:01:14. > :01:16.groups of miners stopped working and started a demonstration. They

:01:16. > :01:21.felt they were not being paid enough for the dangerous job they

:01:21. > :01:27.did. But things got out of hand. Police say the miners charged at

:01:27. > :01:34.them, carrying knives and sticks. The police retaliated by using guns,

:01:34. > :01:37.shooting 34 of the miners dead. But now, things have taken another turn.

:01:37. > :01:41.270 protesters have been arrested, blames for the deaths of fellow

:01:41. > :01:45.workers and charged with murder, even though it was the police who

:01:45. > :01:48.fired the shots. There's been a strong react sthoun the arrests

:01:48. > :01:52.with South Africa's own Justice Minister questioning a decision to

:01:52. > :01:56.charge the protesters. On the streets, the decision's sparked

:01:56. > :02:01.even more anger from people demanding the miners be freed.

:02:01. > :02:04.These are people who were apparently involved in the same

:02:04. > :02:09.demonstration and trade disputes, but they didn't pull the trigger.

:02:09. > :02:13.The South African authorities are trying to shift the blame from the

:02:13. > :02:17.South African authorities themselves on to the protesters and

:02:17. > :02:20.the Trade Unionists. The people behind the arrests, the national

:02:20. > :02:24.prosecuting authority, say they're still going to investigate the

:02:24. > :02:27.police too. But their decision's shocked lots of people causing lots

:02:27. > :02:30.of tension in the country. The Government has demanded an

:02:30. > :02:37.explanation and they say they want to make sure everyone is listened

:02:37. > :02:40.to and treated fairly. Space has fascinated scientists for

:02:40. > :02:45.years and it all started with the original quest to reach the surface

:02:45. > :02:49.of the moon. Today, the first man to manage it is being remembered.

:02:49. > :02:54.Neil Armstrong died on Saturday aged 8 2 and his funeral will be

:02:54. > :02:59.held in his home town of Cincinnati today. So why are his achievements

:02:59. > :03:05.so special? Take a lack at this. He was the first man to ever set

:03:05. > :03:13.foot on the moon. An event watched live on TV by millions of people

:03:13. > :03:18.around the world. One small step for man. One giant

:03:18. > :03:22.step for mankind. Neil Armstrong became an international superstar

:03:22. > :03:26.on his return from Apollo 11 mission in 1969. His defining

:03:26. > :03:31.achievement came very close to not happening at all. Being the first

:03:31. > :03:34.person to land on the moon was pretty astonishing when you

:03:34. > :03:38.consider technology back then was much less advanced than today. The

:03:38. > :03:42.lunar craft they used had lest computer capacity than you would

:03:42. > :03:47.find in an average mobile phone today and even once that limited

:03:47. > :03:51.memory and battery power got them into orbit, Armstrong had to take

:03:51. > :03:56.over manual control of the craft to stop them crashing into a field of

:03:56. > :04:00.massive rocks. When they landed, they had just 17 seconds worth of

:04:00. > :04:10.fuel left. Neil Armstrong's historic journey paved the way for

:04:10. > :04:11.

:04:11. > :04:17.other astronauts to travel to the moon. A man who followed in his

:04:17. > :04:22.footsteps spent hours on the surface. I put the tube in the

:04:22. > :04:25.sample box then it was ready to go home. It's something a handful of

:04:25. > :04:30.people have experienced and however many more make to it the moon now,

:04:30. > :04:33.today the world said goodbye to the only man who can claim to have got

:04:34. > :04:37.there first. Let's bring you the latest on the

:04:37. > :04:42.Paralympics now. It was the first day of action on the track as the

:04:42. > :04:49.Paralympic Stadium re-opened its doors and Aled Davies won Britain's

:04:49. > :04:52.first athletics medal with a bronze in shot put. McGlyn and Scott took

:04:52. > :05:00.silver behind Australia in the visually impaired cycling time

:05:00. > :05:05.trial. At the Aquatics Centre, the Brothers have made it through to

:05:05. > :05:09.the tonight's final of the 300 metres freestyle. Another gold for

:05:09. > :05:14.GB in the velodrome. Colborne triumphs to the individual pursuit,

:05:14. > :05:18.he broke his own world record. It adds to the silver he won yesterday.

:05:18. > :05:23.Some fantastic stuff there. So, it's been a busy day at the

:05:23. > :05:27.Paralympics and it's been just as busy for the fans inside the park

:05:27. > :05:31.too. We went to East London to soak up

:05:31. > :05:35.the party atmosphere. At previous Paralympic host cities,

:05:35. > :05:44.it's fair to say the Paralympics haven't exactly drawn in the crowds.

:05:44. > :05:48.I don't think you can say that about London!

:05:48. > :05:54.What is it like to be here at the Paralympics, sum up the atmosphere?

:05:54. > :06:03.It was absolutely awesome! It was fantastic! I really want to know,

:06:03. > :06:08.what is the atmosphere like in there? Loud. Big. Cool. It's just

:06:08. > :06:12.amazing to see them do it, you know. The signs may have changed but the

:06:12. > :06:18.atmosphere is the same and it's not just the British drawing in these

:06:18. > :06:22.mass you have crowds. Really into it because the things they have to

:06:22. > :06:27.go through. I think they work even harder than the Olympians so in

:06:27. > :06:34.some ways I think they kind of are better than them. It's phenomenal.

:06:34. > :06:39.It's just amazing how with their disabilities they can still perform

:06:39. > :06:43.in the times and records they get. It's just amazing. Today the

:06:43. > :06:48.athletics gets under way inside there, the Paralympic Stadium and

:06:48. > :06:53.if you thought Team GB's Olympic medal haul was impressive, just you

:06:53. > :06:57.wait. Our Olympians are set to do even better -- our paralympians.

:06:57. > :07:01.There's still so much going on in the world and it's going to get

:07:01. > :07:04.crazier tonight. It's the football transfer deadline day and clubs

:07:04. > :07:11.have until 11 tonight to sign the players they want, otherwise

:07:11. > :07:14.they'll have to wait until Jon sw January. Here to explain it all is

:07:14. > :07:19.David, thank you for joining us on the sofa. Let's talk about teals

:07:19. > :07:23.that have been done already? The biggest one so far today is

:07:23. > :07:28.Berbatov moving from Manchester United to Fulham. We think for a

:07:28. > :07:31.fee of about 3 to 5 million on a two-year contract, a great deal for

:07:31. > :07:35.Fulham. Fulham sold him to Manchester United for 30 million a

:07:35. > :07:40.couple of years ago. Charlie Adam's moved from Liverpool to Stoke for

:07:40. > :07:43.4 million. Very good midfield player. A lot of people know him.

:07:43. > :07:47.We've had Van der Vaart leaving Tottenham to go to Hamburg in

:07:47. > :07:51.Germany and Sinclair from Swansea to Manchester City. So a busy day

:07:51. > :07:56.already. What can we expect to happen until 11pm tonight, a lot

:07:56. > :08:03.more to expect I hope? It's going to get really busy tonight which is

:08:03. > :08:08.exciting for all of us. The main deals we are expecting are possibly

:08:08. > :08:13.Moutinio, a Portuguese midfield player maybe moving to Manchester

:08:13. > :08:16.City and then we've also got the possibility of Clint Dempsey,

:08:16. > :08:21.Fulham player, maybe going to Liverpool, maybe not, so we are not

:08:21. > :08:25.so sure yet. Very quickly, it's a crazy day. What happens behind-the-

:08:25. > :08:29.scenes? It's all going to go crazy because you have players thinking

:08:29. > :08:32.they are moving from one club to another, players, you know, in

:08:32. > :08:36.helicopters, driving up and down the motorway. They could be re-

:08:36. > :08:39.routed, they've got contracts to sign, it's a very busy time for

:08:39. > :08:46.everyone involved. Thank you so much. Thank you. Now,

:08:46. > :08:51.a bit more sports to finish... Kind of. How about a bit of pig racing?
