:00:10. > :00:14.Over the last week, riots have turned streets in some of England's

:00:14. > :00:19.biggest cities into battlegrounds. Some of the people taking part have

:00:20. > :00:23.been as young as 11 or 12. It has been a strange and in some places

:00:23. > :00:27.very scary week. I have been reporting on the trouble for

:00:28. > :00:37.Newsround. Nothing seemed to have calmed down, I want to understand

:00:38. > :00:38.

:00:38. > :00:41.more about what has been going on, and why. -- now things seem to have

:00:41. > :00:47.calmed down. Saturday on Tottenham in north

:00:47. > :00:50.London, violence breaks out after a peaceful protest about a local man,

:00:50. > :00:55.Mark Duggan, being shot dead by police who were trying to arrest

:00:55. > :01:04.him. It starts with throwing things at the police, and ends in

:01:04. > :01:08.distraction. -- destruction. That is the biggest building to go up in

:01:08. > :01:11.flames in Tottenham. It used to be a carpet showroom with flats on the

:01:11. > :01:16.top, and more than 20 families had to be rescued before the building

:01:16. > :01:21.was completely destroyed. It still smells like a bonfire here. It is

:01:21. > :01:26.already clear that this isn't about protesting. It is robbery and

:01:26. > :01:31.vandalism. Over the next couple of days, the violence spreads to other

:01:31. > :01:36.parts of London. Looters, many of them teenagers, some younger,

:01:36. > :01:41.smashed shop windows and steel trainers and televisions. Let's get

:01:41. > :01:46.some watches. It didn't stop at theft. The looters set fire to the

:01:46. > :01:49.shops they had robbed. Londoners had not seen flames like these

:01:49. > :01:55.since the Second World War. Over the next few days, London was

:01:55. > :01:58.quieter, but other places were hit. Parts of Birmingham and Manchester

:01:58. > :02:04.were the worst affected. There were outbreaks in Leeds, Liverpool,

:02:04. > :02:09.Nottingham, Leicester, Gloucester and Bristol. Many of those involved

:02:09. > :02:16.have been arrested. Nearly 1,000 in London, more than half of them

:02:16. > :02:21.under 20 years old, and hundreds in other cities. The violence has left

:02:21. > :02:25.people without businesses and homes. This man is now homeless. He and

:02:25. > :02:31.his mum were in their flat when the shop below was set on fire, they

:02:31. > :02:34.have lost everything. I don't understand why people do this.

:02:34. > :02:38.the past couple of days, we have shown you what the streets have

:02:38. > :02:43.been looking like, but I want to show you the inside of a shop that

:02:43. > :02:47.has been smashed up. This is a baby shop. Everything has been taken

:02:47. > :02:52.down, everything has been smashed, the till desk was totally pulled

:02:52. > :02:56.out and the shop is a complete tip. Some people have been heard, and

:02:56. > :03:02.lots have been really frightened. There were helicopters going over

:03:02. > :03:08.my house, I could hear a load of smashing noises on the cards. I was

:03:08. > :03:12.getting quite scared. -- the cars. After the riots, the clean-up. You

:03:12. > :03:17.might think there are troublemakers everywhere, but in reality, the

:03:17. > :03:21.chaos has been caused by a tiny minority of people. Volunteers from

:03:21. > :03:25.London to Manchester have been on the streets, helping to clean up

:03:25. > :03:31.the mess, including these kids in Ealing in west London. We saw it on

:03:31. > :03:36.the news, we wanted to help out. It is our home town here. I want to be

:03:36. > :03:40.helpful. We shouldn't put it to the people that own the shops, we

:03:40. > :03:44.should help as well, because there is loads of damage that has

:03:45. > :03:49.happened. I went back to Tottenham where the trouble started. This

:03:49. > :03:52.leisure centre has been converted into a base to help families whose

:03:52. > :03:56.homes have burnt down. The donations keep coming. This is

:03:56. > :04:01.where people who have lost their homes can come to pick up essential

:04:01. > :04:06.supplies like bedding, clothes, food and even toys. How has it made

:04:06. > :04:11.you feel, to see Tottenham going through this? I was very sad. They

:04:11. > :04:15.don't deserve to lose their homes. Over nothing. Seeing these people

:04:15. > :04:20.working together to help the victims of the riots made me wonder

:04:20. > :04:25.why a few turn to violence. There have been serious riots in

:04:25. > :04:28.Tottenham and other places before, in the 1980s. These were largely to

:04:28. > :04:33.do with race. Black people in particular thought the police

:04:33. > :04:36.treated them unfairly. Things have changed a lot since then. The

:04:36. > :04:41.police make much more effort to talk to different communities,

:04:41. > :04:45.though some people around here say they still don't trust them. This

:04:45. > :04:49.time, the trouble across parts of England has involved people of all

:04:49. > :04:53.races, and they are certainly not protesting against anything in

:04:53. > :04:57.particular. Listen to these guys in Manchester, who didn't want to

:04:57. > :05:01.appear on camera. Why are you going to miss the opportunity to get free

:05:01. > :05:05.stuff? I am not bothered, I will keep doing this every day until I

:05:05. > :05:09.get caught. Nothing is going to get happened to me, I won't get

:05:09. > :05:13.grounded, I might get shouted at but that is it. The fact that so

:05:13. > :05:18.much of the draw has been pointless vandalism means most politicians

:05:18. > :05:22.are reluctant to see things like poverty as a cause for all of this,

:05:22. > :05:26.of and certainly not an excuse. see some of the poorest people in

:05:26. > :05:29.the world, who have nothing. They are not in this country, often,

:05:29. > :05:34.they are brought in Africa and different places. They are not

:05:34. > :05:39.behaving like this. I grew up poor, just down the road from here. You

:05:39. > :05:43.have to know the difference between right and wrong. Stealing is wrong.

:05:43. > :05:47.These Tottenham kids definitely know that. They have been really

:05:47. > :05:50.upset by what has happened to their area. Do you really think they are

:05:50. > :05:55.protesting about the killing of that man, or just taking the

:05:55. > :06:01.opportunity to steal? Mostly, people are saying it is just to do

:06:01. > :06:05.it for fun, and it was the opportunity. They are not using

:06:05. > :06:09.their brains, they are just robbing for the fun of it. Why do you think

:06:09. > :06:15.these guys are feeling -- are not feeling bad about the people they

:06:15. > :06:20.are hurting? Because everyone else is doing it. They just feel like it

:06:20. > :06:25.is OK. Most of the people are young. Bake just want a sense of

:06:25. > :06:29.involvement. -- they just want. Maybe most people have been getting

:06:29. > :06:37.involved simply out of greed. completely stealing and vandalism,

:06:37. > :06:40.it is not writing in any political sense, there are no ideas. They are

:06:41. > :06:44.not protesting about one thing. they are interested in what they

:06:44. > :06:48.can wear, what they can prove to their friends, that they are

:06:49. > :06:53.wearing something better than their neighbours. People are now debating

:06:53. > :06:58.the deeper reasons behind why this Rick -- this trouble has happened.

:06:58. > :07:03.They are blaming a range of things like parenting, the gap between

:07:03. > :07:07.rich and poor, or two people joining gangs and using mobiles to

:07:07. > :07:10.spread trouble. What everyone agrees on is that those involved

:07:10. > :07:14.have to be caught and punished. The police keep releasing pictures of

:07:14. > :07:20.those caught on camera and many are already going to court. Over the

:07:20. > :07:23.past week, we have seen some terrible Pavia -- behaviour from a
