0:00:56 > 0:01:00Hello. I'm cleaning the lab and dusting Mr Skeleton

0:01:00 > 0:01:02with my feather duster.

0:01:02 > 0:01:05- Tickle, tickle, tickle. - BEEP BEEP BEEP

0:01:05 > 0:01:10I hear a beep, I see a flash. I wonder what they're going to ask.

0:01:13 > 0:01:18- BOTH: Hi, Nina! - Hello!- We've got a question for you.

0:01:18 > 0:01:20Why are our feet so ticklish?

0:01:20 > 0:01:24That's a great question. Why are our feet so ticklish?

0:01:24 > 0:01:28My feet are very ticklish but I've never thought about why.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31Come down to the lab and we'll investigate.

0:01:31 > 0:01:36BOTH: See you soon, Nina. Bye!

0:01:36 > 0:01:40I'll need help to answer this and I know just who to ask.

0:01:40 > 0:01:43OK, Neurons, time to get to work.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02ALL: Neurons at the ready, Nina.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06OK. Today's question is why are our feet so ticklish?

0:02:06 > 0:02:10Which Neuron will be most useful to help find the answer?

0:02:10 > 0:02:12ALL: Me! Me! Me! Oh, me!

0:02:12 > 0:02:14Will it be fabulous Felix?

0:02:14 > 0:02:18I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21Will it be beautiful Belle?

0:02:21 > 0:02:26I send messages to brain from ear. If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.

0:02:26 > 0:02:30- Will it be lovely Luke? - For looking and seeing, day or night,

0:02:30 > 0:02:34- I'll help you with your sense of sight.- Will it be awesome Ollie?

0:02:34 > 0:02:37If it's pongy or whiffy but you can't tell,

0:02:37 > 0:02:41- my messages help your sense of smell. - Or will it be baby Bud?

0:02:41 > 0:02:47Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat!

0:02:49 > 0:02:52Oh, it's Felix!

0:02:52 > 0:02:54ALL: Go, Felix! Go, Felix!

0:02:54 > 0:03:00Go, Felix! Go, Felix! Go, Felix! Go, Felix!

0:03:00 > 0:03:05Marvellous! A little touch can mean so much, Nina.

0:03:05 > 0:03:08Today's question is why are our feet so ticklish?

0:03:08 > 0:03:13Tickles are something you feel, so Felix our touch Neuron will help us.

0:03:13 > 0:03:17I'd better get the lab ready before the experimenters arrive.

0:03:19 > 0:03:23Zoe likes jacket potatoes and Brier likes tangerines.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27They both want to know why our feet are so ticklish.

0:03:27 > 0:03:32So today, for one day only, Zoe and Brier become the experimenters!

0:03:35 > 0:03:39- Hi, guys.- BOTH: Hi, Nina! - Welcome to my science lab.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43Your question is why are our feet so ticklish

0:03:43 > 0:03:46but why do you want to know?

0:03:46 > 0:03:49Our feet are very ticklish and it's a funny feeling.

0:03:49 > 0:03:53But we want to know WHY our feet are so ticklish.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56Many parts of our bodies can be ticklish.

0:03:56 > 0:04:01Armpits, necks, tummies, but feet do seem to be especially ticklish.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03We need to experiment to find out more.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05Let's use our senses.

0:04:05 > 0:04:10ALL: Woop-woo! A senses experiment! We're ready, Nina!

0:04:10 > 0:04:14Brier, you and I will sit here, and Zoe, you're going to try

0:04:14 > 0:04:19and tickle us using a very hi-tech piece of ticking equipment.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22- What do you think that is? - Fingers.- Yes, fingers.

0:04:22 > 0:04:27Fingers are brilliant tickling tools. Brace yourself, Brier.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29OK, get tickling.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33- Hee-hee!- Ha-ha!

0:04:33 > 0:04:37- Ha-ha!- Hee-hee!

0:04:37 > 0:04:40Ha-ha! Ha-ha!

0:04:40 > 0:04:43How would you describe the tickly feeling?

0:04:43 > 0:04:45Like a feather on your foot!

0:04:45 > 0:04:49It's a sort of itchy, shivery sensation, Nina.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51- And do you like the feeling?- Yes!

0:04:51 > 0:04:57And Zoe, what do you see happening to our feet and our toes

0:04:57 > 0:04:59when you're tickling them?

0:04:59 > 0:05:01- They're scrunching up!- Yeah!

0:05:01 > 0:05:05- Our feet are trying to escape from the tickle touch!- Ha-Ha!

0:05:05 > 0:05:09Oh, I can't bare it any more! Please, stop!

0:05:09 > 0:05:13Did you notice the tickling made us pull our feet away?

0:05:13 > 0:05:16Yes, I couldn't bear it!

0:05:16 > 0:05:20Some people believe this is because our body thinks

0:05:20 > 0:05:25the tickle could be an insect sneaking up on us.

0:05:25 > 0:05:29Some insects bite, so our body makes us shake it off or move away.

0:05:29 > 0:05:34Zoe, can you try tickling us again but not so light a tickle touch.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36Off you go!

0:05:36 > 0:05:43- Oh...how does that feel this time? - Hmm...not so ticklish.

0:05:43 > 0:05:47So our senses experiment has shown us that tickles only happen

0:05:47 > 0:05:50when something touches our skin very lightly.

0:05:50 > 0:05:54How do our bodies know when they are being tickled?

0:05:54 > 0:05:57We need to go somewhere with lots of tasty treats!

0:05:57 > 0:06:00- Let's go, experimenters!- BOTH: Yay!

0:06:03 > 0:06:08- I wonder where Nina is taking us. - Nina mentioned tasty treats.

0:06:08 > 0:06:13Perhaps, it's a fruit market with sweet-smelling strawberries.

0:06:13 > 0:06:17Or a supermarket with cheese, ham, broccoli, beans and...

0:06:17 > 0:06:19Och, I'm starving!

0:06:19 > 0:06:24We're here! And it sure looks like we're in for a yummy surprise.

0:06:24 > 0:06:29- Hi, Aileen.- Hi, Nina. - This is Aileen. She's a chef.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32It's her job to make tasty treats for people.

0:06:32 > 0:06:36- What have you got cooking? - I've made a sticky toffee pudding.

0:06:36 > 0:06:39- Shall we see if it's ready? ALL: Yes!- Yes!

0:06:41 > 0:06:45The pudding is just out of the oven so it's very hot.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49Part of chef's job is to make sure the food is warm and cooked enough,

0:06:49 > 0:06:53but not too hot, in case it burns their mouths.

0:06:53 > 0:06:59So she'll use this, a sensor. Sensor means feeler

0:06:59 > 0:07:03and this clever little box can feel how hot or cold our food is.

0:07:03 > 0:07:08You put the spike into the food and it gives you a number on the screen.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11The bigger the number, the hotter the food is.

0:07:11 > 0:07:16The smaller the number, the colder the food. Let's test the pudding.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20Oh, yep, that's definitely too hot to eat.

0:07:20 > 0:07:24Let's test another food while the pudding cools down.

0:07:28 > 0:07:32- Does anybody like ice cream? - Yes! We all love ice cream.

0:07:32 > 0:07:37- Do you think ice cream would be hot or cold?- Definitely cold.

0:07:37 > 0:07:43Let's see. Can you put the sensor into the ice cream for me, Brier?

0:07:44 > 0:07:47You're right. The number is small

0:07:47 > 0:07:51because the ice cream is very cold.

0:07:51 > 0:07:55And our feet can sense hot or cold too.

0:07:55 > 0:07:59But they can also sense lots of other things, like tickly tickles.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02That's because our feet contain nerves.

0:08:02 > 0:08:05I use nerves to feel things for Nina.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08Yes, you do, Felix.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11We have nerves in our skin all over our bodies

0:08:11 > 0:08:14and the nerves act like sensors.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16Some nerves sense hot and cold

0:08:16 > 0:08:21and other nerves can sense a really light touch of a sneaky tickle.

0:08:21 > 0:08:25Oh! Sticky toffee pudding!

0:08:25 > 0:08:27- Thanks, chef.- Enjoy!

0:08:38 > 0:08:43Let's go back to the lab for one final experiment.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48OK, Zoe, your shoes are off and you'll find out why

0:08:48 > 0:08:51I've asked you to take your lab coat off.

0:08:51 > 0:08:55Brier, you'll be the top tickler for this experiment.

0:08:55 > 0:09:00I have here for you an extra large, extra soft, extra tickly feather!

0:09:00 > 0:09:02Woo-hoo!

0:09:02 > 0:09:06Oh, lots of touchy, feely tickles! Marvellous.

0:09:06 > 0:09:10This experiment will test different parts of Zoe's body

0:09:10 > 0:09:12to see how ticklish they are.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15Zoe, your job is to stay nice and still

0:09:15 > 0:09:19and try not to react to the tickling. Can you manage that?

0:09:21 > 0:09:25Will you try your best? Great. I'm going to mark on this chart

0:09:25 > 0:09:28whether each body part

0:09:28 > 0:09:31is very tickly or not very tickly.

0:09:31 > 0:09:33Everybody ready?

0:09:33 > 0:09:37OK, so forehead first. Get tickling.

0:09:40 > 0:09:44- How does that feel?- It's OK, Nina. But not really tickly.

0:09:44 > 0:09:48So Zoe's forehead isn't very tickly.

0:09:48 > 0:09:51Next, let's try back of the hand.

0:09:54 > 0:09:56Not too tickly?

0:09:56 > 0:09:59It's OK, but not very tickly.

0:09:59 > 0:10:05Not very tickly. Ah-ha! It's armpits next!

0:10:05 > 0:10:09Oh, great! Prepare to hear some giggling!

0:10:13 > 0:10:15- Oooo! Ha-ha!- Hee-hee.

0:10:15 > 0:10:21- You're supposed to be staying still! - Yes, Nina, but it's very tickly.

0:10:21 > 0:10:25OK, so let's put armpit down as very tickly.

0:10:27 > 0:10:31Last of all, it's feet. Get that extra large, extra soft,

0:10:31 > 0:10:34extra tickly feather tickling those feet.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37- Hee-hee!- Ha-ha!

0:10:37 > 0:10:41I don't even need to ask what I'm marking for feet!

0:10:41 > 0:10:43A big tick next to very tickly.

0:10:43 > 0:10:48This experiment has shown us that Zoe's forehead and back of hand

0:10:48 > 0:10:50aren't particularly ticklish,

0:10:50 > 0:10:54but her armpits and feet are very ticklish indeed.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57This diagram should help us explain why.

0:10:57 > 0:11:00This is the body.

0:11:00 > 0:11:04And these little dots are the nerves that sense tickles.

0:11:04 > 0:11:09Different types of nerves in our skin sense different things.

0:11:09 > 0:11:14Some nerves sense hot and cold, and others, like the ones shown here,

0:11:14 > 0:11:17sense the really light touch of a tickle.

0:11:17 > 0:11:22- Can you see many tickle nerves in the forehead?- BOTH: No, Nina.

0:11:22 > 0:11:26Where are there lots of the nerves that sense tickles?

0:11:26 > 0:11:29- BOTH: In the feet.- That's right.

0:11:29 > 0:11:34Zoe, you said your forehead wasn't ticklish and that's because

0:11:34 > 0:11:40most of us have hardly any nerves that sense tickles in our foreheads.

0:11:40 > 0:11:44Your feet could hardly bear to be tickled and that's because

0:11:44 > 0:11:49most of us have more tickle nerves in our feet than anywhere else.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57Your question was why are feet so ticklish?

0:11:57 > 0:11:59And I think we've answered it.

0:11:59 > 0:12:03Tickles are caused by something touching our skin lightly.

0:12:03 > 0:12:05A bit like an insect.

0:12:05 > 0:12:10When something tickles us, nerves in our skin send a message to our brain

0:12:10 > 0:12:13and this makes our body wriggle

0:12:13 > 0:12:18as it tries to escape the tickle and it can often make us laugh.

0:12:18 > 0:12:22Everyone's body is different, but many of us have more nerves

0:12:22 > 0:12:26that sense tickles in our feet than anywhere else.

0:12:26 > 0:12:30This is why our feet can feel more ticklish than the rest of our bodies

0:12:30 > 0:12:33so I hope that's answered your question.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36- BOTH: Thanks, Nina. Bye!- Bye!

0:12:39 > 0:12:44If you want to find out more about the science that's all around us,

0:12:44 > 0:12:48go to the Nina section on the CBeebies website. Have fun!

0:12:48 > 0:12:52- # Hearts beating.- Lungs breathing - Fingers feeling.- Mouths eating

0:12:52 > 0:12:57- # And don't forget your brain - Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies

0:12:57 > 0:12:59# Inside and out

0:12:59 > 0:13:02# Brilliant bodies Brilliant bodies

0:13:02 > 0:13:04# Come on, let's find out about

0:13:04 > 0:13:10# Handy hands, bendy knees, stretch your backs and noses that sneeze

0:13:10 > 0:13:15- # We all have brilliant bodies - Brilliant bodies!

0:13:15 > 0:13:20# Every part has a job to do Even scabs and earwax too

0:13:20 > 0:13:25- # We all have brilliant bodies - Brilliant bodies!

0:13:25 > 0:13:30# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies Lashes to protect our eyes

0:13:30 > 0:13:37# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies and don't forget to exercise. #

0:13:37 > 0:13:39I've had a brilliant day!

0:13:39 > 0:13:44All that giggling, trying to work out what causes a tickle!

0:13:44 > 0:13:46It's been a marvellous day.

0:13:46 > 0:13:51What a touchy, feely, feathery tickle-fest,

0:13:51 > 0:13:53especially on those feet!

0:13:53 > 0:13:57Ah, it's been such a great day, man, finding out

0:13:57 > 0:13:59where the tickle nerves are in the body!

0:13:59 > 0:14:04And remember, everyone's body is different but they're all brilliant!

0:14:04 > 0:14:07- See you again soon! Bye!- Bye!
