0:20:57 > 0:21:00Mm! Oh, hello there. Excuse me.

0:21:00 > 0:21:04I'm just finishing my lunch. It's my favourite today.

0:21:04 > 0:21:06Pasta with tomato and vegetables.

0:21:06 > 0:21:11And I might treat myself and have some chocolate ice-cream later. Yes!

0:21:11 > 0:21:12BEEPING

0:21:12 > 0:21:16Oh! I hear a beep, I see a flash. I wonder what they're going to ask?

0:21:19 > 0:21:21BOTH: Hi, Nina.

0:21:21 > 0:21:25- Hello.- We've got a question for you.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28Where does food go when we eat it?

0:21:28 > 0:21:32A brilliant question! Where does food go when we eat it?

0:21:32 > 0:21:36Come down to my lab and we'll do some experiments to investigate.

0:21:36 > 0:21:40BOTH: See you soon, Nina. Bye!

0:21:40 > 0:21:42Bye!

0:21:42 > 0:21:46I'll need help to answer this and I know just who to ask.

0:21:46 > 0:21:50OK, Neurons, time to get to work.

0:22:05 > 0:22:08ALL: Neurons at the ready, Nina.

0:22:08 > 0:22:12OK. Today's question is, "Where does food go when we eat it?"

0:22:12 > 0:22:15Which Neuron will be most useful to help find the answer?

0:22:15 > 0:22:18ALL: Me! Me! Me! Oh, me!

0:22:18 > 0:22:21Will it be fabulous Felix?

0:22:21 > 0:22:25I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.

0:22:25 > 0:22:27Will it be beautiful Belle?

0:22:27 > 0:22:32I send messages to brain from ear. If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35- Will it be lovely Luke? - For looking and seeing, day or night,

0:22:35 > 0:22:38I'll help you with your sense of sight.

0:22:38 > 0:22:42- Will it be awesome Ollie? - If it's pongy or whiffy

0:22:42 > 0:22:45but you can't tell, my messages help your sense of smell.

0:22:45 > 0:22:49- Or will it be baby Bud? - Sour, salty, bitter or sweet,

0:22:49 > 0:22:51I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat!

0:22:56 > 0:22:58Yippee!

0:22:58 > 0:23:02ALL: Go Bud! Go Bud! Go Bud!

0:23:02 > 0:23:04Go Bud! Go Bud!

0:23:04 > 0:23:09- Go Bud! - Give me a taste of the action, Nina.

0:23:09 > 0:23:12Today's question is, "Where does food go when we eat it?"

0:23:12 > 0:23:16We taste food when we eat, so Bud will be helping today.

0:23:16 > 0:23:20Right, I need to get the lab ready for the experimenters.

0:23:23 > 0:23:27Arianna likes smoked salmon and Maria likes trampolining.

0:23:27 > 0:23:30But they both want to know where food goes when we eat it.

0:23:30 > 0:23:32So today, for one day only,

0:23:32 > 0:23:35Arianna and Maria become the experimenters!

0:23:38 > 0:23:40- Hi, guys.- BOTH: Hi, Nina.

0:23:40 > 0:23:43Welcome to my science lab. Come on in.

0:23:43 > 0:23:46Now, you asked where does food go when we eat it,

0:23:46 > 0:23:48A brilliant question.

0:23:48 > 0:23:51- Why do you want to know? - We love eating food.

0:23:51 > 0:23:55But we don't know where it goes when we swallow it.

0:23:55 > 0:24:00What our brilliant bodies do with the food is really amazing.

0:24:00 > 0:24:03I've got some fun experiments. Let's start with senses.

0:24:03 > 0:24:08ALL: Whoop-woo! A senses experiment! We're ready, Nina.

0:24:08 > 0:24:10Now, do any of you know why we eat food?

0:24:10 > 0:24:14To keep us big and strong.

0:24:14 > 0:24:18Yes. Food is really important in helping our brilliant bodies

0:24:18 > 0:24:20grow big and strong,

0:24:20 > 0:24:23because food gives us energy. Let's do an experiment

0:24:23 > 0:24:27with these toys to explain what we mean by energy.

0:24:27 > 0:24:29Now, they're not moving at the moment.

0:24:29 > 0:24:33Let's wind them up and see what happens.

0:24:36 > 0:24:37Oh!

0:24:37 > 0:24:40- What's happening now? - They're moving.

0:24:40 > 0:24:45Yes. By winding up the toys, we gave them the energy they needed to move.

0:24:45 > 0:24:47But moving uses up energy

0:24:47 > 0:24:51and when the energy runs out, the toys stop.

0:24:51 > 0:24:53This is like what happens to our bodies.

0:24:53 > 0:24:56When we run, walk, play, or even think or talk,

0:24:56 > 0:24:59our body uses up energy.

0:24:59 > 0:25:01Energy comes from food.

0:25:01 > 0:25:04It's important to eat regular, healthy meals,

0:25:04 > 0:25:06so we stay lively and energetic.

0:25:06 > 0:25:09What happens when you put food in your mouth?

0:25:09 > 0:25:13We chew it and we swallow it.

0:25:13 > 0:25:17That's right. By chewing our food, we mash it all up in our mouths.

0:25:17 > 0:25:21For this experiment, that's what you're going to do

0:25:21 > 0:25:22with those potato mashers.

0:25:22 > 0:25:25So get mashing! Go for it and mash it up!

0:25:26 > 0:25:30Please remember that this is an experiment.

0:25:30 > 0:25:33It's not good to waste food normally.

0:25:42 > 0:25:43Perfect!

0:25:43 > 0:25:46What's happened to the food now?

0:25:46 > 0:25:49- It's gone all squished.- That's right.

0:25:49 > 0:25:52Chewing breaks down food into small pieces.

0:25:52 > 0:25:55When we swallow food, it goes on an exciting journey

0:25:55 > 0:25:59through our digestive system. The food moves down a tube

0:25:59 > 0:26:02and then into our tummies.

0:26:02 > 0:26:05Here in our stomach, it gets mixed up

0:26:05 > 0:26:07and broken down even more.

0:26:07 > 0:26:11To find out more about where our food goes,

0:26:11 > 0:26:15we're going to slide off on an exciting journey of our own.

0:26:15 > 0:26:18- Let's go, experimenters. - BOTH: Yeah!

0:26:24 > 0:26:28- Wonder where we're going today? - Nina said slide off somewhere.

0:26:28 > 0:26:33- Maybe it's an ice-rink with swishy skates.- That would be wonderful.

0:26:33 > 0:26:35'Hey, I see it now!

0:26:35 > 0:26:39'They're going to be sliding all right,

0:26:39 > 0:26:43'but not on the ice!' LAUGHTER

0:26:44 > 0:26:49Well, I told you we were going to slide off on an exciting adventure.

0:26:49 > 0:26:53And you won't get a much bigger slide than this.

0:26:53 > 0:26:55In the lab, we mashed up food

0:26:55 > 0:26:58to show how it gets broken down in our mouth and stomachs,

0:26:58 > 0:27:01which are part of our digestive system.

0:27:01 > 0:27:04The next part of the journey

0:27:04 > 0:27:07is through these long, wiggly tubes

0:27:07 > 0:27:09we call intestines.

0:27:09 > 0:27:12That's a big, long word, Nina.

0:27:12 > 0:27:15A big, long word for big, long tubes, Belle.

0:27:15 > 0:27:20Intestines are really long, wiggly tubes that are folded up

0:27:20 > 0:27:23inside our brilliant bodies.

0:27:23 > 0:27:25What's this slide got to do with it?

0:27:25 > 0:27:29Let's climb up to the top to find out.

0:27:30 > 0:27:34For this experiment, we're going to pretend

0:27:34 > 0:27:37that these giant slides are intestines

0:27:37 > 0:27:39and we're the food moving down them.

0:27:39 > 0:27:41Take a mat.

0:27:41 > 0:27:43OK. So everyone, onto the slide.

0:27:48 > 0:27:50Are you ready?

0:27:50 > 0:27:52OK. One, two, three, go!

0:27:55 > 0:27:59Oh! Oh, you're not moving. You're stuck.

0:27:59 > 0:28:02- Why do you think that might be? - The mats are sticking.

0:28:02 > 0:28:06These rubber mats are not very slidey, Nina.

0:28:06 > 0:28:11You're right. The mats are sticking to the slide, so it's hard to move.

0:28:11 > 0:28:14This can happen to food in our intestines too.

0:28:14 > 0:28:18If we don't drink enough water, the food gets hard and dry.

0:28:18 > 0:28:21Then it has trouble sliding through

0:28:21 > 0:28:25the squiggly tube and can cause something called constipation,

0:28:25 > 0:28:29which can give us a sore tummy. We should try different mats.

0:28:30 > 0:28:32Hee-hee!

0:28:32 > 0:28:34These mats are made of fibre

0:28:34 > 0:28:37and we sprayed some water on them too.

0:28:37 > 0:28:40They'll be better than the dry, rubber ones.

0:28:40 > 0:28:43So let's get on, guys.

0:28:43 > 0:28:46OK. One, two, three, go!

0:28:46 > 0:28:48Ooh!

0:28:48 > 0:28:50LAUGHTER

0:28:53 > 0:28:58Wa-hey-hey-hey! That was amazing!

0:28:58 > 0:29:01Oh, my. It felt like we were flying.

0:29:01 > 0:29:04Wow! That was brilliant, wasn't it?

0:29:04 > 0:29:08Remember we were pretending the big slide

0:29:08 > 0:29:11was a squiggly intestine and we were food sliding down?

0:29:11 > 0:29:15The rubber mats stuck to the slide and didn't move.

0:29:15 > 0:29:20But when we used the wet fibre mats, we slid down easily.

0:29:20 > 0:29:22Certain foods, like fruit and vegetables

0:29:22 > 0:29:26and some breakfast cereals, contain lots of food fibre.

0:29:26 > 0:29:29The fibre mixes with the water we drink

0:29:29 > 0:29:34and helps food slide easily through our wiggly intestines.

0:29:34 > 0:29:38That's why It's important to eat lots of healthy fibre foods

0:29:38 > 0:29:40and drink lots of water.

0:29:40 > 0:29:43Something else important happens in our intestines.

0:29:43 > 0:29:47- Let's go back to the lab for one final experiment.- BOTH: Yay!

0:29:49 > 0:29:54We're going to pretend that this clear tube is part of our intestine.

0:29:54 > 0:29:58- Now, remember you mashed up a lovely plate of food earlier?- BOTH: Yeah.

0:29:58 > 0:30:03Well, for this experiment, we're going to put the mashed-up meal

0:30:03 > 0:30:07inside the intestines and push it along to see what happens.

0:30:07 > 0:30:09Ho-ho! So let's get pouring!

0:30:22 > 0:30:26What can you see happening in the intestine tube?

0:30:26 > 0:30:30Little bits of food are falling into the tray.

0:30:30 > 0:30:33This is what happens inside our bodies.

0:30:33 > 0:30:36Some parts of the food we eat are mashed up enough

0:30:36 > 0:30:39to squeeze through tiny holes in the intestine

0:30:39 > 0:30:41and move into our body.

0:30:41 > 0:30:45These parts of the food are used by our body for energy

0:30:45 > 0:30:48and other important things to keep us healthy.

0:30:48 > 0:30:50But what else can you see

0:30:50 > 0:30:55- inside the intestine tube? - There's still bits of food.

0:30:55 > 0:30:58Yes. Not every bit of every food

0:30:58 > 0:31:00can fit through the little holes.

0:31:00 > 0:31:03This is the stuff our body can't make into energy.

0:31:03 > 0:31:06Oh, does that mean it's not good for us, Nina?

0:31:06 > 0:31:10No, Bud. Remember, things like fruit, vegetables

0:31:10 > 0:31:13and cereals have good food fibre in them.

0:31:13 > 0:31:16And just like the fibre mats on the giant slide

0:31:16 > 0:31:18that got us moving, fibre in our food

0:31:18 > 0:31:21helps to move the food along too.

0:31:21 > 0:31:24So even though bits of this food are left over,

0:31:24 > 0:31:28it's still done an important job in our digestive system.

0:31:28 > 0:31:31It keeps moving down to the end of the intestine

0:31:31 > 0:31:35and is pushed out of our body into the toilet as poo.

0:31:40 > 0:31:44Your question was, "Where does food go when we eat it?"

0:31:44 > 0:31:46And I think we've answered it.

0:31:46 > 0:31:49When we eat, food travels down a tube

0:31:49 > 0:31:52into our stomach and through our intestines.

0:31:52 > 0:31:54Our body takes out the bits of the food

0:31:54 > 0:31:57it needs to make energy and keep us healthy.

0:31:57 > 0:31:59Everything else moves down to our bottom

0:31:59 > 0:32:02and is pushed out in the toilet as poo.

0:32:02 > 0:32:06It's really important that we eat lots of healthy fibre foods

0:32:06 > 0:32:09and drink lots of water to keep everything moving.

0:32:09 > 0:32:13Or we get a sore tummy and have trouble going to the toilet.

0:32:13 > 0:32:18- I hope that's answered your question.- BOTH: Thanks, Nina. Bye!

0:32:18 > 0:32:19You're welcome. Bye!

0:32:23 > 0:32:27Want to find out more about the science that's all around us?

0:32:27 > 0:32:31Go to the Nina page on the CBeebies website. Have fun!

0:32:31 > 0:32:36- Hearts beating.- Lungs breathing. - Fingers feeling.- Mouths eating.

0:32:36 > 0:32:38And don't forget your brain.

0:32:38 > 0:32:40# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies

0:32:40 > 0:32:43# Inside and o-o-out

0:32:43 > 0:32:46# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies

0:32:46 > 0:32:48# Come on let's find out about

0:32:48 > 0:32:50# Our handy hands and bendy knees

0:32:50 > 0:32:53# Stretchy backs and noses that sneeze

0:32:53 > 0:32:56# We all have brilliant bodies...

0:32:56 > 0:32:58ALL: Brilliant bodies!

0:32:58 > 0:33:01# Every part has a job to do

0:33:01 > 0:33:04# Even scabs and earwax too

0:33:04 > 0:33:06# We all have brilliant bodies...

0:33:06 > 0:33:08ALL: Brilliant bodies!

0:33:08 > 0:33:11# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies

0:33:11 > 0:33:13# Lashes to protect our eyes

0:33:13 > 0:33:16# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies

0:33:16 > 0:33:20# And don't forget to exercise. #

0:33:20 > 0:33:23Oh, I've had a brilliant day.

0:33:23 > 0:33:27Listening to the wind-up toys using up all their energy.

0:33:27 > 0:33:30I've had a fabby day!

0:33:30 > 0:33:33Mashing up the food was great fun.

0:33:33 > 0:33:36It's been a marvellous day.

0:33:36 > 0:33:40The fibre mat made Nina slide really fast. Whee!

0:33:40 > 0:33:44Ah, its been such a great day, man.

0:33:44 > 0:33:48Watching them slide food through the intestine tube.

0:33:48 > 0:33:49Very clever.

0:33:49 > 0:33:53Remember, everyone's body is different but they're all brilliant.

0:33:53 > 0:33:55See you again soon. Bye!

0:33:55 > 0:33:57ALL: Bye!
