0:00:57 > 0:01:00Hello, there! I'm putting a plaster on my finger.

0:01:00 > 0:01:05I cut it doing an experiment earlier and it was bleeding a little bit.

0:01:05 > 0:01:10I should have been more careful. Silly me. There! That's better.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12BEEPING

0:01:12 > 0:01:16Oh! I hear a beep, I see a flash. I wonder what they're going to ask.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22ALL: Hi, Nina!

0:01:22 > 0:01:26- Hi, guys!- We've got a question for you.- What are scabs for?

0:01:26 > 0:01:30That's a great question! What are scabs for?

0:01:30 > 0:01:31Scabs appear on our skin

0:01:31 > 0:01:35if we cut ourselves or graze our elbows or knees.

0:01:35 > 0:01:39Come down to my lab and we'll investigate!

0:01:39 > 0:01:41ALL: See you soon, Nina! Bye!

0:01:41 > 0:01:43Bye!

0:01:43 > 0:01:48I'll need some help to answer this one, and I know just who to ask.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50OK, Neurons, time to get to work.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10ALL: Neurons at the ready, Nina!

0:02:10 > 0:02:13OK, today's question is - what are scabs for?

0:02:13 > 0:02:17Which Neuron would be most useful in helping us find the answer?

0:02:17 > 0:02:22- ALL: Me, me, me! - Will it be fabulous Felix...?

0:02:22 > 0:02:27I can help so very much, if you need the sense of touch.

0:02:27 > 0:02:31- Will it be beautiful Belle? - I send messages to brain from ear.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34- If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.- Lovely Luke?

0:02:34 > 0:02:37For looking and seeing day or night,

0:02:37 > 0:02:40I'll help you with your sense of sight.

0:02:40 > 0:02:41Awesome Ollie?

0:02:41 > 0:02:46If it's pongy, but you can't tell, my messages help your sense of smell.

0:02:46 > 0:02:47Or baby Bud?

0:02:47 > 0:02:49Sour, salty, bitter or sweet,

0:02:49 > 0:02:53I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55BEEPING

0:02:55 > 0:02:58It's Luke!

0:02:58 > 0:02:59Yes!

0:02:59 > 0:03:03ALL: Go, Luke! Go, Luke! Go, Luke!

0:03:03 > 0:03:06Go, Luke! Go, Luke! Go, Luke!

0:03:06 > 0:03:10Cool, Nina! I'll be looking out to help you!

0:03:10 > 0:03:13Today's question is - what are scabs for?

0:03:13 > 0:03:16As we see scabs on our skin, Luke,

0:03:16 > 0:03:18our sight Neuron, will help us today.

0:03:18 > 0:03:22Right, I need to get the lab ready before they arrive.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28Ross likes motorbikes. Oscar likes birds of prey.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30And Megan loves drama.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33But they all want to know what scabs are for,

0:03:33 > 0:03:38so today, Ross, Oscar and Megan become...the Experimenters!

0:03:38 > 0:03:41- Hi, guys!- ALL: Hi, Nina!

0:03:41 > 0:03:43Welcome to my science lab. Come in.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46You asked what are scabs for?

0:03:46 > 0:03:49It's a great question, but why do you want to know?

0:03:49 > 0:03:54- We're told not to pick them. - What are scabs for, Nina?

0:03:54 > 0:03:57Our brilliant bodies create scabs for lots of good reasons.

0:03:57 > 0:04:01We need to experiment to find out more.

0:04:01 > 0:04:05- NINA LAUGHS - And let's start by using our senses.

0:04:05 > 0:04:10ALL: Woo-hoo! A senses experiment. We're ready, Nina!

0:04:10 > 0:04:13When we cut ourselves or fall and graze our knees,

0:04:13 > 0:04:17something called a scab forms over the cut.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20Scabs are a reddy, browny, purply colour,

0:04:20 > 0:04:24and they usually feel dry and rough on our skin.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27But they do an important job for our bodies.

0:04:27 > 0:04:32- Let's get experimenting!- Yes! - OK, pick up your watering cans

0:04:32 > 0:04:38and when I say go, pour some water into your buckets. Ready?

0:04:38 > 0:04:41Yes!

0:04:41 > 0:04:43OK, one, two, three...go!

0:04:50 > 0:04:55OK, and stop pouring. Lift them up and tell me what you can see.

0:04:58 > 0:05:03- Water.- What's happening to the water? - It's coming out from a hole.

0:05:03 > 0:05:07You're right. There's a hole in all the buckets.

0:05:07 > 0:05:09That's why the water leaked out.

0:05:09 > 0:05:13It's like what happens to our skin when we cut or graze ourselves.

0:05:13 > 0:05:17The cut makes holes in our skin and blood leaks out.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19Because our bodies are brilliant,

0:05:19 > 0:05:25the skin starts making itself better by forming a scab over the hurt bit.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28This next experiment will help explain.

0:05:28 > 0:05:33This is special putty, so roll it around in your hands.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36- It's all gooey!- And sticky!

0:05:36 > 0:05:41Use the putty to cover the holes in the bottom of your buckets.

0:05:46 > 0:05:50The Experimenters are doing a good job with that squidgy putty.

0:05:50 > 0:05:55Well done, Experimenters! Let's test the buckets again.

0:05:55 > 0:05:58Pour in some more water.

0:06:02 > 0:06:06That's it. That's plenty. OK, stop pouring.

0:06:06 > 0:06:11And now, lift up the bucket over the tray and see what happens.

0:06:13 > 0:06:17- So, what's happened? - It doesn't come out.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20Yes! The putty sealed the holes in your buckets

0:06:20 > 0:06:22and stopped the water escaping.

0:06:22 > 0:06:27This is just like what a scab does when we cut or graze ourselves.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30Our bodies form a scab to cover the holes in our skin

0:06:30 > 0:06:32to stop the blood from leaking out,

0:06:32 > 0:06:35because losing a lot of blood is bad for us.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39But the scab forms for other important reasons too.

0:06:39 > 0:06:43To find out more, let's visit somewhere very sporty.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46- Let's go, Experimenters! - ALL: Yes!

0:06:51 > 0:06:55Oh, goody! I love this bit. I wonder where Nina is taking us?

0:06:55 > 0:07:00Nina said it's somewhere fun and sporty.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03Maybe it's a splishy, splashy swimming pool.

0:07:03 > 0:07:08Or a fun gymnasium, with trampolines and roly-poly mats!

0:07:09 > 0:07:15- I think I can smell grass.- We're here, and it does look very grassy!

0:07:16 > 0:07:20This is one of my most favourite experiments ever,

0:07:20 > 0:07:23because we get to play football. Ready, guys?

0:07:23 > 0:07:25ALL: Yes!

0:07:40 > 0:07:42Ooh, I think they're about to score!

0:07:45 > 0:07:47Goal! ALL: Yes!

0:07:48 > 0:07:52- Oh, dear! My foot has accidentally damaged the grass.- Wow!

0:07:52 > 0:07:57It looks like the grass has been scratched and cut open.

0:07:57 > 0:08:01Yes, it'll need some time to grow back and get strong again.

0:08:01 > 0:08:07Don't worry. There is something we can do to help the grass grow back.

0:08:07 > 0:08:11- Hi, David!- Hi, Nina.- It's David's job to look after the grass here.

0:08:11 > 0:08:15- Show us what you do to help the grass grow back.- Of course.

0:08:15 > 0:08:18This special material is used on football pitches

0:08:18 > 0:08:19and sports grounds

0:08:19 > 0:08:23to help protect the damaged grass until it grows back.

0:08:23 > 0:08:29A bit like this plaster protects the little cut on my finger.

0:08:29 > 0:08:32When we get a scab, its job to protect the cut or graze

0:08:32 > 0:08:34until it gets better.

0:08:34 > 0:08:39So scabs are like the body making its very own plasters.

0:08:39 > 0:08:41That's right, Felix.

0:08:41 > 0:08:45Let's see if we can find more damaged grass. Let's go!

0:08:45 > 0:08:48- Bye, David!- Bye.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52Oh, look!

0:08:52 > 0:08:56This material has been here for a few weeks.

0:08:56 > 0:08:58Let's see if it's done its job.

0:08:58 > 0:09:03- It's grown back! - There's no damaged bits.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06The material's done a great job of protecting the grass,

0:09:06 > 0:09:11so it can grow back. Scabs protect our skin, allowing it to grow back.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13It's important not to pick scabs,

0:09:13 > 0:09:16because the skin won't have had time to grow back properly.

0:09:16 > 0:09:20When the skin is strong enough, it'll fall off all by itself.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23There's something else that's brilliant about scabs,

0:09:23 > 0:09:27- so let's go back to my lab for one final experiment.- ALL: Yeah!

0:09:28 > 0:09:32One reason I've put a plaster on my cut finger

0:09:32 > 0:09:35is to stop germs getting in that could cause an infection.

0:09:35 > 0:09:42- An infection? That sounds serious.- It can be.

0:09:42 > 0:09:44Infections start when tiny,

0:09:44 > 0:09:50invisible bugs called germs get into our bodies and make us feel ill.

0:09:50 > 0:09:55Our brilliant bodies create scabs to act like a protective shield

0:09:55 > 0:09:57so nasty germs can't get through.

0:09:57 > 0:10:01It's so important not to pick scabs. If we pick them,

0:10:01 > 0:10:04the cut might become infected.

0:10:04 > 0:10:07Let's pretend this is a red cut on the skin.

0:10:07 > 0:10:13And pretend each of these green balls is a nasty germ.

0:10:13 > 0:10:16It's your job to throw the balls

0:10:16 > 0:10:19and get as many germs into the cut as possible.

0:10:19 > 0:10:21- Everybody ready?- Yes!- Go for it.

0:10:28 > 0:10:34Oh, there's another germ in the cut. And another one!

0:10:34 > 0:10:38So, what happened to the green germ balls?

0:10:38 > 0:10:41- Lots of the balls got in the cut. - Right!

0:10:41 > 0:10:45If this was a real cut, that could cause an infection.

0:10:45 > 0:10:50They got into the cut because there was nothing to stop them.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53What if there was a big scab over the cut?

0:10:53 > 0:10:57- The balls won't get in? - Well, let's see.

0:10:58 > 0:11:04This time, our volunteer super-scab, Megan, will help protect the cut

0:11:04 > 0:11:08with this big umbrella, which is our pretend scab.

0:11:08 > 0:11:14Let's see what happens. Ready to throw? One, two, three...go!

0:11:22 > 0:11:26Hooray! It's working! The germs can't get through.

0:11:32 > 0:11:35That was great fun! But what happened?

0:11:35 > 0:11:39- The umbrella kept the germs out. - That's right.

0:11:39 > 0:11:42If we imagine the umbrella was a scab,

0:11:42 > 0:11:46it was like a shield, stopping germs getting into the cut,

0:11:46 > 0:11:48where they could cause infection.

0:11:48 > 0:11:51# Nina and the Neurons! #

0:11:53 > 0:11:55So your question was -

0:11:55 > 0:11:58what are scabs for? I think we've answered it.

0:11:58 > 0:12:03Scabs do lots of very important jobs for our brilliant bodies.

0:12:03 > 0:12:05They stop blood escaping from a cut,

0:12:05 > 0:12:10they help our skin grow back, and they stop germs getting in.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13Scabs are like our body's natural plaster and will fall off

0:12:13 > 0:12:18by themselves when they're finished doing their important jobs.

0:12:18 > 0:12:22- So I hope that's answered your question.- ALL: Thanks, Nina! Bye!

0:12:22 > 0:12:25You're welcome! Bye!

0:12:29 > 0:12:33Want to find out more about the science all around us?

0:12:33 > 0:12:37Go to the Nina section on the CBeebies website. Have fun!

0:12:37 > 0:12:42- Hearts beating.- Lungs breathing. - Fingers feeling.- Mouths eating.

0:12:42 > 0:12:44And don't forget your brain.

0:12:44 > 0:12:46# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies

0:12:46 > 0:12:49# Inside and ou-ou-out

0:12:49 > 0:12:52# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies

0:12:52 > 0:12:54# Come on, let's find out about

0:12:54 > 0:12:57# Our happy hands and bendy knees

0:12:57 > 0:12:59# Stretchy backs And noses that sneeze

0:12:59 > 0:13:04- # We all have brilliant bodies - Brilliant bodies!

0:13:04 > 0:13:07# Every part has a job to do

0:13:07 > 0:13:10# Even scabs and ear wax too

0:13:10 > 0:13:14- # We all have brilliant bodies - Brilliant bodies

0:13:14 > 0:13:18# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies

0:13:18 > 0:13:19# Lashes to protect our eyes

0:13:19 > 0:13:22# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies

0:13:22 > 0:13:26# And don't forget to exercise. #

0:13:26 > 0:13:28It's been such a great day, man!

0:13:28 > 0:13:33Watching the Experimenters sealing up the holes in their buckets.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36I really enjoyed myself today.

0:13:36 > 0:13:42The Experimenters helped protect the grass so it can grow back again.

0:13:42 > 0:13:49I've had a fabby day! The umbrella scab kept those nasty germs out.

0:13:49 > 0:13:50Scabs are amazing!

0:13:50 > 0:13:53Remember, everyone's body is different,

0:13:53 > 0:13:55but they're all brilliant!

0:13:55 > 0:13:57See you again soon. Bye!

0:13:57 > 0:13:59ALL: Bye!
