0:40:56 > 0:40:59Hello there! Oh, silly me!

0:40:59 > 0:41:02I just dropped my bottle of fizzy water.

0:41:02 > 0:41:07I'm feeling very thirsty today. This will be lovely.

0:41:07 > 0:41:09- FIZZING - Oh! Ho-ho!

0:41:09 > 0:41:11Oh, no! Oh, fizzy fountain!

0:41:11 > 0:41:12BEEPING

0:41:12 > 0:41:17I hear a beep, I see a flash. I wonder what they're going to ask.

0:41:18 > 0:41:20ALL: Hi, Nina!

0:41:20 > 0:41:24- Hi, guys. - We've got a question for you.

0:41:24 > 0:41:27Why do fizzy drinks make us burp?

0:41:27 > 0:41:31That's a great question. Why do fizzy drinks make us burp?

0:41:31 > 0:41:34I love fizzy water, but you're right,

0:41:34 > 0:41:36it makes me burp sometimes.

0:41:36 > 0:41:38Why don't you come down to my lab

0:41:38 > 0:41:42and we'll do some experiments to investigate.

0:41:42 > 0:41:45- ALL: See you soon, Nina. Bye. - Bye!

0:41:45 > 0:41:47I'm going to need some help to answer this one

0:41:47 > 0:41:49and I know who to ask.

0:41:49 > 0:41:52OK, Neurons. Time to get to work.

0:42:08 > 0:42:11ALL: Neurons at the ready, Nina.

0:42:11 > 0:42:15OK, today's question is why do fizzy drinks make us burp?

0:42:15 > 0:42:17Which neuron do you think would be useful

0:42:17 > 0:42:19in helping find the answer?

0:42:19 > 0:42:22ALL: Me! Me! Me! Me!

0:42:22 > 0:42:24Will it be fabulous Felix?

0:42:24 > 0:42:28I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.

0:42:28 > 0:42:30Will it be beautiful Belle?

0:42:30 > 0:42:34I send messages to brain from ear. If there's a sound, I help you hear.

0:42:34 > 0:42:36Will it be lovely Luke?

0:42:36 > 0:42:39For looking and seeing, day or night,

0:42:39 > 0:42:41I help you with your sense of sight.

0:42:41 > 0:42:43Will it be awesome Ollie?

0:42:43 > 0:42:46If it's pongy or whiffy but you can't tell,

0:42:46 > 0:42:48my messages help your sense of smell.

0:42:48 > 0:42:50Or will it be baby Bud?

0:42:50 > 0:42:55Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat.

0:42:55 > 0:42:57BEEPING

0:42:57 > 0:42:59Yippee!

0:42:59 > 0:43:01CHEERING

0:43:02 > 0:43:05ALL: Go, Bud! Go, Bud! Go, Bud! Go, Bud!

0:43:05 > 0:43:09Go, Bud! Go, Bud! Go, Bud! Go, Bud!

0:43:09 > 0:43:12Give me a taste of the action, Nina!

0:43:12 > 0:43:15Today's question is why do fizzy drinks make us burp?

0:43:15 > 0:43:18Because we use taste when we drink things,

0:43:18 > 0:43:20Bud will help me today.

0:43:20 > 0:43:24I'd better get the lab ready before the experimenters arrive.

0:43:25 > 0:43:30Michael likes skateboarding, Brody likes dinosaurs

0:43:30 > 0:43:31and Callum loves rugby.

0:43:31 > 0:43:34They all want to know why fizzy drinks make us burp.

0:43:34 > 0:43:39Today, for one day only, Michael, Brody and Callum become...

0:43:39 > 0:43:40the experimenters!

0:43:40 > 0:43:43- Hi, guys. - ALL: Hi, Nina!

0:43:43 > 0:43:46Welcome to my science lab.

0:43:46 > 0:43:50You asked, "Why do fizzy drinks make us burp?" Great question.

0:43:50 > 0:43:52Why do you want to know?

0:43:52 > 0:43:55Because my mummy says burping is rude.

0:43:55 > 0:43:58Burping can be rude and embarrassing sometimes.

0:43:58 > 0:44:01We should experiment to find out more.

0:44:01 > 0:44:03Let's start by using our senses.

0:44:03 > 0:44:07ALL: Whoop-whoo! A senses experiment! We're ready, Nina.

0:44:07 > 0:44:10To find out why fizzy drinks make us burp,

0:44:10 > 0:44:14it's important to know what makes a fizzy drink fizzy.

0:44:14 > 0:44:17For our first experiment, I'm going to try

0:44:17 > 0:44:20and make this plain water fizz.

0:44:20 > 0:44:23Let's check that it's not fizzy at the moment.

0:44:23 > 0:44:26Listen carefully as I unscrew the lid.

0:44:26 > 0:44:28- Did you hear fizzy sounds? - No.

0:44:28 > 0:44:32No, so we know it's not fizzy.

0:44:32 > 0:44:35Now I'm going to add something called frozen carbon dioxide,

0:44:35 > 0:44:37which is often called dry ice.

0:44:39 > 0:44:42Watch and listen carefully.

0:44:45 > 0:44:47BUBBLING

0:44:47 > 0:44:49FIZZING

0:44:49 > 0:44:53Look at all those fizzy bubbles! Amazing!

0:44:53 > 0:44:56What can you see happening in the water?

0:44:56 > 0:44:57Fizzy!

0:44:57 > 0:45:00Yes, the frozen carbon dioxide, or dry ice,

0:45:00 > 0:45:03has turned into gas that we can see in the water.

0:45:03 > 0:45:06Most gasses are invisible

0:45:06 > 0:45:09and carbon dioxide is an invisible gas too.

0:45:09 > 0:45:11When we add it to water,

0:45:11 > 0:45:14we can see it there because it makes gassy bubbles.

0:45:14 > 0:45:18Now open your ears and listen carefully.

0:45:18 > 0:45:20FIZZ AND POP

0:45:20 > 0:45:22- Oh! - So what did you hear?

0:45:22 > 0:45:25A fizzing noise.

0:45:25 > 0:45:29- What made the fizzing noise? - Invisible gas.

0:45:29 > 0:45:32The fizzing we hear is the carbon dioxide

0:45:32 > 0:45:35escaping from the top of the water.

0:45:35 > 0:45:39All fizzy drinks are fizzy because of gas.

0:45:39 > 0:45:42When gas is released, it makes a sound.

0:45:42 > 0:45:47What does this sound have to do with fizzy drinks making us burp?

0:45:47 > 0:45:51We need to do another experiment and we're going to go somewhere

0:45:51 > 0:45:53that has some very interesting sounds.

0:45:53 > 0:45:55ALL: Yey!

0:45:59 > 0:46:03Here we go! I can't wait to see where we'll end up today!

0:46:03 > 0:46:06Nina said it's somewhere with interesting sounds.

0:46:06 > 0:46:08Maybe it's a noisy factory.

0:46:08 > 0:46:11Or a farm with lots of animal noises.

0:46:11 > 0:46:14BUD MAKES OINKING NOISES

0:46:14 > 0:46:16Moo! Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

0:46:16 > 0:46:20I don't smell any farm animals, Bud.

0:46:23 > 0:46:26This lighthouse shines a bright light when it's dark

0:46:26 > 0:46:30to warn ships not to come too close to the rocky shore.

0:46:30 > 0:46:35We'll find out why we've come here to talk about burping in a minute.

0:46:35 > 0:46:39First, have you ever burped when you haven't had a fizzy drink?

0:46:39 > 0:46:43- Sometimes when I'm eating I burp. - Just after dinner.

0:46:43 > 0:46:47You sometimes burp too, don't you, Nina?

0:46:47 > 0:46:49Yes, actually, Bud.

0:46:49 > 0:46:52That's because if we eat too quickly,

0:46:52 > 0:46:55we can swallow air with our food.

0:46:55 > 0:46:58Air is a type of gas and when we swallow it,

0:46:58 > 0:47:02it goes down our food tube and into our tummy.

0:47:02 > 0:47:05What happens if we get too much gas in our tummies?

0:47:05 > 0:47:10I've got a noisy experiment that will help us find out.

0:47:10 > 0:47:14To start off, we're going to very gently blow into these party horns.

0:47:14 > 0:47:16Just use a little bit of breath.

0:47:16 > 0:47:18RUSTLING AND QUIET TOOTS

0:47:18 > 0:47:24- How do those horns sound? - Not very loud, Nina. Squeaky.

0:47:24 > 0:47:28OK, this time take a big, deep breath and blow as hard as you can.

0:47:28 > 0:47:30LOUD TOOTS

0:47:34 > 0:47:37- What did you notice there? - That was louder.

0:47:37 > 0:47:42Yes. By using a bigger breath, you made the horn sound much louder.

0:47:42 > 0:47:47Now let's try using these hand horns. Pass it along.

0:47:47 > 0:47:50HONKING

0:47:50 > 0:47:51SHE LAUGHS

0:47:51 > 0:47:58Wa-hay! Brilliant honky sounds, Nina. Honk-honk! Honk-honk!

0:47:58 > 0:48:00THEY LAUGH

0:48:00 > 0:48:03Are these louder or quieter than party horns?

0:48:03 > 0:48:05ALL: Louder.

0:48:05 > 0:48:08That's because squeezing pushes lots of air through the horn

0:48:08 > 0:48:11and the more air there is, the louder the noise.

0:48:11 > 0:48:15I've brought you to this lighthouse because it has a loud horn.

0:48:15 > 0:48:18- Are you ready? - ALL: Yeah!

0:48:20 > 0:48:24FOGHORN BLARES

0:48:25 > 0:48:27FOGHORN BLARES

0:48:27 > 0:48:32- That horn was so loud, Nina! - It was, Belle.

0:48:32 > 0:48:35It has to be really loud because it's a foghorn.

0:48:35 > 0:48:39When it's foggy, ships can't see light from the lighthouse

0:48:39 > 0:48:43so the lighthouse keeper sounds the really loud foghorn.

0:48:43 > 0:48:47Why was the foghorn louder than the other horns?

0:48:47 > 0:48:48More air?

0:48:48 > 0:48:51Exactly. There was more air pumped through the horn

0:48:51 > 0:48:54and this made a much louder sound.

0:48:54 > 0:48:57This is a bit like our tummies.

0:48:57 > 0:49:00When gas builds up in our tummies

0:49:00 > 0:49:04from drinking fizzy drinks or swallowing too much air as we eat,

0:49:04 > 0:49:08our clever body gets rid of it by making us burp.

0:49:08 > 0:49:12The more air involved in the burp, the longer and louder it will be.

0:49:12 > 0:49:15How is this burpy sound made by our body?

0:49:15 > 0:49:18Let's go back to the lab to experiment.

0:49:18 > 0:49:19THEY ALL CHEER

0:49:21 > 0:49:27In front of you, you have a bottle lid with a balloon attached.

0:49:27 > 0:49:28The lids have a hole in them.

0:49:28 > 0:49:34I'm going to pour some salt through the hole and into the balloon.

0:49:34 > 0:49:38Whoop! I poured salt into your balloons earlier.

0:49:38 > 0:49:43Next we're going to take the lid off the fizzy water bottle

0:49:43 > 0:49:48and replace it quickly with our special balloon lids.

0:49:48 > 0:49:51Let's take the lid off our fizzy water bottle.

0:49:51 > 0:49:56Then quickly pop the special balloon lid on.

0:49:57 > 0:50:00Once you're happy that's on nice and tight,

0:50:00 > 0:50:03you can gently take the clip off.

0:50:05 > 0:50:10That's good. Pop that down. OK, guys.

0:50:10 > 0:50:13When I count to three, lift up the balloon

0:50:13 > 0:50:16and let the salt pour into the fizzy water.

0:50:16 > 0:50:19OK. One, two, three...

0:50:20 > 0:50:22..lift up the balloon!

0:50:22 > 0:50:24GASPS

0:50:24 > 0:50:28THEY LAUGH

0:50:28 > 0:50:32The salt has made all of the gas in the fizzy water escape in one go

0:50:32 > 0:50:38into the balloon, and that's why it got bigger or expanded.

0:50:38 > 0:50:43But the best part of the experiment is yet to come.

0:50:43 > 0:50:47What I need you to do now is remove the balloon from the lid.

0:50:47 > 0:50:51Now hold onto the neck of the balloon tightly.

0:50:51 > 0:50:54We don't want air to escape, it might spoil the surprise.

0:50:54 > 0:50:58Yes! I love surprises!

0:50:58 > 0:51:01Now we're going to let the air out of our balloons.

0:51:01 > 0:51:03I'll go first.

0:51:03 > 0:51:05SQUEAKING

0:51:05 > 0:51:06THEY LAUGH

0:51:11 > 0:51:14- OK, guys. It's your turn. Go! - SQUEAKING

0:51:20 > 0:51:21What brilliant noises!

0:51:21 > 0:51:24The air escaping from the necks of our balloons

0:51:24 > 0:51:27is like what happens in our bodies when we burp.

0:51:27 > 0:51:31There's a bit of muscle at the top of the food tube

0:51:31 > 0:51:33and when a gassy burp escapes from our tummies,

0:51:33 > 0:51:38it pushes up past the muscle and makes it wobble back and forth.

0:51:38 > 0:51:42It's this wobble that makes the burp sound.

0:51:47 > 0:51:51So your question was, "Why do fizzy drinks make us burp?"

0:51:51 > 0:51:53I think we have answered it.

0:51:53 > 0:51:57Sometimes when we drink a gassy drink or eat too quickly

0:51:57 > 0:52:03and swallow lots of air with our food, gas builds up in our tummies.

0:52:03 > 0:52:06If there's too much gas, our brilliant bodies

0:52:06 > 0:52:07make us burp to get rid of it.

0:52:07 > 0:52:12So because fizzy drinks have lots of a special gas inside them,

0:52:12 > 0:52:15called carbon dioxide, they can often make us burp.

0:52:15 > 0:52:19Remember we should always try to cover our mouths when we burp.

0:52:19 > 0:52:23It can be rather rude. I hope that's answered your question.

0:52:23 > 0:52:27- ALL: Thanks, Nina. Bye. - Bye!

0:52:27 > 0:52:33If you want to find out more about the science that's all around us,

0:52:33 > 0:52:37go to the Nina section on the CBeebies website. Have fun!

0:52:37 > 0:52:42- Hearts beating.- Lungs breathing. - Fingers feeling.- Mouths eating.

0:52:42 > 0:52:44And don't forget your brain.

0:52:44 > 0:52:46# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies

0:52:46 > 0:52:49# Inside and ou-ou-out

0:52:49 > 0:52:52# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies

0:52:52 > 0:52:54# Come on, let's find out about

0:52:54 > 0:52:57# Our happy hands and bendy knees

0:52:57 > 0:53:00# Stretchy backs And noses that sneeze

0:53:00 > 0:53:04- # We all have brilliant bodies - Brilliant bodies!

0:53:04 > 0:53:07# Every part has a job to do

0:53:07 > 0:53:10# Even scabs and ear wax too

0:53:10 > 0:53:14- # We all have brilliant bodies - Brilliant bodies

0:53:14 > 0:53:18# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies

0:53:18 > 0:53:19# Lashes to protect our eyes

0:53:19 > 0:53:22# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies

0:53:22 > 0:53:26# And don't forget to exercise. #

0:53:26 > 0:53:30Ah, it's been such a great day, man.

0:53:30 > 0:53:33Seeing all those beautiful bubbles fizzing in the water.

0:53:33 > 0:53:38I've had a brilliant day. The foghorn was so loud!

0:53:38 > 0:53:41Wah-wah!

0:53:42 > 0:53:44It's been a marvellous day.

0:53:44 > 0:53:49Feeling the balloon fill up with gas was exciting.

0:53:49 > 0:53:56I've had a fabby day! The burpy balloon experiment was so funny!

0:53:56 > 0:53:58Ha-ha-haa ha-ha!

0:53:58 > 0:54:03And remember, everyone's body is different but they're all brilliant.

0:54:03 > 0:54:06- See you again soon. Bye! - ALL: Bye!
