0:20:53 > 0:20:55# Oh yeah! #

0:20:56 > 0:20:58Woof! Woof!

0:20:58 > 0:21:02Oh, hello. Our hands are brilliant, aren't they?

0:21:02 > 0:21:06We can do so many things with them. We can move our fingers and thumbs

0:21:06 > 0:21:09into all kinds of shapes and positions. See?

0:21:09 > 0:21:11Woof! Woof! Hee-hee!

0:21:11 > 0:21:14- ALARM SOUNDS - I hear a beep, I see a flash,

0:21:14 > 0:21:17I wonder what they're going to ask.

0:21:18 > 0:21:22- ALL: Hi, Nina.- Hi, guys.

0:21:22 > 0:21:28- We've got a question for you. - How do our hands work?

0:21:28 > 0:21:31That's a great question. How do our hands work?

0:21:31 > 0:21:35It'll be really HANDY to find out the answer to this one.

0:21:35 > 0:21:38Come to my lab and we'll do experiments to investigate.

0:21:38 > 0:21:44- ALL: See you soon, Nina. Bye!- Bye.

0:21:44 > 0:21:48I'll need help to answer this and I know just who to ask.

0:21:48 > 0:21:52OK, Neurons, time to get to work.

0:22:07 > 0:22:09ALL: Neurons at the ready, Nina.

0:22:09 > 0:22:13OK. Today's question is, how do our hands work?

0:22:13 > 0:22:17Which Neuron will be most useful to help find the answer?

0:22:17 > 0:22:20ALL: Me! Me! Me! Oh, me!

0:22:20 > 0:22:22Will it be fabulous Felix?

0:22:22 > 0:22:26I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.

0:22:26 > 0:22:28Will it be beautiful Belle?

0:22:28 > 0:22:33I send messages to brain from ear. If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.

0:22:33 > 0:22:37- Will it be lovely Luke? - For looking and seeing, day or night,

0:22:37 > 0:22:40I'll help you with your sense of sight.

0:22:40 > 0:22:42Will it be awesome Ollie?

0:22:42 > 0:22:45If it's pongy or whiffy but you can't tell,

0:22:45 > 0:22:49- my messages help your sense of smell. - Or will it be baby Bud?

0:22:49 > 0:22:55Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat!

0:22:55 > 0:22:58- It's Felix.- Oh!

0:22:58 > 0:23:05- NEURONS:- Go, Felix! Go, Felix! Go, Felix! Go, Felix! Go, Felix!

0:23:05 > 0:23:09Marvellous! A little touch can mean so much, Nina.

0:23:09 > 0:23:12Today's question is, how do our hands work?

0:23:12 > 0:23:15Since our touchy, feely fingers are on our hands,

0:23:15 > 0:23:18I think Felix will be a big help.

0:23:18 > 0:23:22But stand by, neurons. I have a feeling I may need your help.

0:23:22 > 0:23:26I better get the lab ready before the experimenters arrive.

0:23:28 > 0:23:33Esther likes dogs, Ruby likes reading and Lily loves dancing

0:23:33 > 0:23:37but they all want to know how our hands work, so, today,

0:23:37 > 0:23:41for one day only, Esther, Ruby and Lily become the experimenters.

0:23:43 > 0:23:46- Hi, guys!- ALL: Hi, Nina.

0:23:46 > 0:23:49Welcome to my science lab. Come in.

0:23:49 > 0:23:53"How do our hands work?" is a brilliant question.

0:23:53 > 0:23:55Why do you want to know?

0:23:55 > 0:23:58We use our hands for lots of different things.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01But we don't know how our hands work.

0:24:01 > 0:24:04We do use our hands in lots of special ways.

0:24:04 > 0:24:07We need to investigate to find out how they work.

0:24:07 > 0:24:11First, we're going to use our senses.

0:24:11 > 0:24:15ALL: Whoo-whoo! A senses experiment. We're ready, Nina.

0:24:15 > 0:24:20OK, let's all scrunch our hands into a fist

0:24:20 > 0:24:24then stretch your fingers out as wide as you can.

0:24:24 > 0:24:29- I must say, that does feel rather nice.- Wiggle your fingers.

0:24:31 > 0:24:33See how we can wiggle and move them

0:24:33 > 0:24:36in lots of different directions all at once?

0:24:36 > 0:24:39ALL: Yes, Nina.

0:24:39 > 0:24:41This is useful for many things,

0:24:41 > 0:24:47like pointing and scratching an itch or picking things up.

0:24:47 > 0:24:51We're going to do an experiment to see how many different ways

0:24:51 > 0:24:54to pick up cups using different parts of our hands

0:24:54 > 0:24:56and different fingers.

0:24:56 > 0:24:59Remember, Nina, cups can be hot

0:24:59 > 0:25:02or have liquid inside them that can spill.

0:25:02 > 0:25:06That's right, we should always be careful with cups.

0:25:06 > 0:25:11These ones are empty and so safe. Everybody ready? Then go!

0:25:29 > 0:25:30Hoopla!

0:25:33 > 0:25:36What a lot of different ways to pick up a cup.

0:25:36 > 0:25:40That was brilliant. So, our fingers can bend

0:25:40 > 0:25:44and move in lots of directions all at once.

0:25:44 > 0:25:48But how do our hands move like this? It's time for another experiment.

0:25:50 > 0:25:52This is Mr Skeleton.

0:25:52 > 0:25:56A skeleton is what we call all the bones inside our bodies.

0:25:56 > 0:26:00Let's have look at Mr Skeleton's hand.

0:26:00 > 0:26:03- How many different bones can you see?- Lots and lots.

0:26:03 > 0:26:07That's right, there are lots of bones in his hand.

0:26:07 > 0:26:10These ones make up the main part of his hand.

0:26:10 > 0:26:13And these ones make up his fingers.

0:26:13 > 0:26:17Most of our fingers have three bones but our thumb is different

0:26:17 > 0:26:19because it only has two.

0:26:19 > 0:26:23We can see how many bones we have in out fingers and thumb

0:26:23 > 0:26:26by bending them. One...two...three.

0:26:28 > 0:26:30One...two.

0:26:30 > 0:26:32We're going to make pretend fingers

0:26:32 > 0:26:37by joining those little sticks with some fasteners.

0:26:37 > 0:26:39Those sticks are our bones. Get joining.

0:26:50 > 0:26:54Look! They're using their fingers to make a finger.

0:26:54 > 0:26:57Let's see you bend those pretend fingers.

0:27:03 > 0:27:05Well done!

0:27:05 > 0:27:08Your pretend fingers are bending at the joins

0:27:08 > 0:27:11between your pretend bones, like Mr Skeleton's.

0:27:11 > 0:27:15Oh! These bendy joins are called joints.

0:27:15 > 0:27:19Sounds like joints are very important, Nina.

0:27:19 > 0:27:23They are, Belle. So, experimenters, you asked how our hands work.

0:27:23 > 0:27:27We've discovered that our joints are an important part

0:27:27 > 0:27:30of how our hands work because they allow us to

0:27:30 > 0:27:34bend and move our fingers in lots of different helpful ways.

0:27:34 > 0:27:37Most of our fingers have three bones in them

0:27:37 > 0:27:41joined together by bendy joints but our thumb only has two.

0:27:41 > 0:27:45Does that mean thumbs aren't as useful as other fingers?

0:27:45 > 0:27:50Actually, Ollie, our thumbs can be the most useful part of our hands

0:27:50 > 0:27:54and to find out more, let's meet a very clever friend of mine.

0:27:54 > 0:27:57- Let's go, experimenters. - ALL: Yay!

0:28:00 > 0:28:03I wonder where Nina is taking us.

0:28:03 > 0:28:06Nina said we'd be meeting her clever friend.

0:28:06 > 0:28:11Listen up, neurons, we're here and I think I can hear some barking.

0:28:11 > 0:28:13Ruff! Ruff!

0:28:18 > 0:28:22OK, we're here to find out more about our thumbs.

0:28:22 > 0:28:27So, let's see them! Our thumbs are stronger than our other fingers

0:28:27 > 0:28:30and they can move differently too. Try this.

0:28:30 > 0:28:33The thumb can move all the way over to here

0:28:33 > 0:28:35and touch the other fingers easily.

0:28:35 > 0:28:39This makes the thumb really useful for gripping things.

0:28:39 > 0:28:41We're going to find out how

0:28:41 > 0:28:45with the help of that clever friend of mine. Come here, girl!

0:28:45 > 0:28:50It's a dog! I thought I heard some barking.

0:28:52 > 0:28:54This dog is called Meg

0:28:54 > 0:28:58and she's trained by Dan to do lots of clever things.

0:28:58 > 0:29:00- Thanks for inviting us. - You're welcome.

0:29:00 > 0:29:04What do you notice about Meg's hands?

0:29:04 > 0:29:08She doesn't have any hands, Nina. She has paws.

0:29:08 > 0:29:13Yes. Some animals, like monkeys, have hands a bit like ours

0:29:13 > 0:29:17but lots of animals, like dogs, have paws instead.

0:29:17 > 0:29:21Meg doesn't have fingers like ours and she doesn't have thumbs either.

0:29:21 > 0:29:25Does this makes a difference? First up,

0:29:25 > 0:29:29you and Meg are all going to fetch one of those newspapers.

0:29:29 > 0:29:32One...two...three...go!

0:29:33 > 0:29:38They're using their thumb with their others fingers to grip the paper

0:29:38 > 0:29:42The dog has to use his mouth to pick up the paper.

0:29:42 > 0:29:46Ew! I wouldn't like to taste that!

0:29:47 > 0:29:50Great fetching, everyone! You too, Meg.

0:29:53 > 0:29:57Now it's time for lunch. Everybody, get munching!

0:30:14 > 0:30:18Can you see how you're all using your thumbs to grip

0:30:18 > 0:30:20- your knives and forks? - Yes, Nina.

0:30:23 > 0:30:28- Meg isn't using her knife and fork, Nina.- She's not, is she?

0:30:28 > 0:30:31Meg doesn't have a thumb and fingers to grip

0:30:31 > 0:30:34so she can't use a knife and fork.

0:30:34 > 0:30:37She's still enjoying her food though.

0:30:39 > 0:30:43For our final experiment, we're going to be opening a door.

0:30:43 > 0:30:46Why don't you try, Lily.

0:30:49 > 0:30:53Well done. You used your thumb again, didn't you?

0:30:53 > 0:30:58Just like this. Now, let's see how Meg gets on.

0:31:01 > 0:31:03The dog can't do it, Nina.

0:31:03 > 0:31:07That's right, Luke. Paws aren't enough to open this door.

0:31:07 > 0:31:10Meg needs someone to open it for her.

0:31:10 > 0:31:14- Bye, Meg, bye, Dan. Thanks for helping.- Bye, Nina.

0:31:16 > 0:31:19So, from picking things up to using a knife and fork

0:31:19 > 0:31:22and opening a door, we use our fingers

0:31:22 > 0:31:25and thumbs in clever ways to do lots of things.

0:31:25 > 0:31:28Most animals, like dogs, don't have fingers.

0:31:28 > 0:31:29No animals have thumbs

0:31:29 > 0:31:32that are as special and move like ours.

0:31:32 > 0:31:35So, we can do lots of things that animals can't.

0:31:35 > 0:31:40- What a brilliant final experiment. Let's go back to the lab.- ALL: Yeah!

0:31:45 > 0:31:48Your question was, how do our hands work?

0:31:48 > 0:31:49We've answered it.

0:31:49 > 0:31:54Our hands help us do lots of different things every day

0:31:54 > 0:31:57because we can move our fingers lots of ways.

0:31:57 > 0:32:01We can do this because our fingers are made of little hard bones

0:32:01 > 0:32:04that are joined together by bendy joints.

0:32:04 > 0:32:07Our thumbs are a really special finger.

0:32:07 > 0:32:12They move most of all and are really useful for things like gripping.

0:32:12 > 0:32:16So, we can use our hands to do tricky things that animals can't do

0:32:16 > 0:32:19like eating with a knife and fork.

0:32:19 > 0:32:23Most people have two hands with five fingers

0:32:23 > 0:32:27but humans are really clever so people who are different

0:32:27 > 0:32:30find brilliant ways to use their hands or bodies

0:32:30 > 0:32:32to do everything they want to do.

0:32:32 > 0:32:35I hope that's answered your question.

0:32:35 > 0:32:38- ALL: Thanks, Nina. Bye.- Bye.

0:32:43 > 0:32:47Want to find out more about the science all around us?

0:32:47 > 0:32:51Go to the Nina section on the CBeebies website. Have fun!

0:32:51 > 0:32:56- Hearts beating.- Lungs breathing. - Fingers feeling.- Mouths eating.

0:32:56 > 0:32:58And don't forget your brain.

0:32:58 > 0:33:03# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies Inside and ou-ou-out

0:33:03 > 0:33:08# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies Come on, let's find out about

0:33:08 > 0:33:13# Our happy hands and bendy knees Stretchy backs and noses that sneeze

0:33:13 > 0:33:18- # We all have brilliant bodies - ALL: Brilliant bodies

0:33:18 > 0:33:24# Every part has a job to do Even scabs and ear wax too

0:33:24 > 0:33:29- # We all have brilliant bodies - ALL: Brilliant bodies

0:33:29 > 0:33:34# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies Lashes to protect our eyes

0:33:34 > 0:33:40# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies And don't forget to exercise. #

0:33:40 > 0:33:44Ah. It's been such a great day, man.

0:33:44 > 0:33:47Seeing how the joints let the fingers bend.

0:33:47 > 0:33:49I really enjoyed myself today.

0:33:49 > 0:33:53They did a great job gripping their knives and forks.

0:33:53 > 0:34:00Oh, I've had a brilliant day. The dog was so clever using it's paws. Ruff!

0:34:00 > 0:34:04Remember, everyone's body is different but they're all brilliant.

0:34:04 > 0:34:06See you soon. Bye!

0:34:06 > 0:34:08ALL: Bye!
