0:40:57 > 0:41:01Oh, hello! I'm trying to remember where I put my red pencil.

0:41:01 > 0:41:06I used it just now to draw this picture. Mm, let me think. Erm...

0:41:08 > 0:41:13Oh, I remember now! I put it behind my ear for safe keeping.

0:41:13 > 0:41:15ALARM BEEPS

0:41:15 > 0:41:18I hear a beep, I see a flash! I wonder what they're going to ask?

0:41:19 > 0:41:24- Hi, Nina.- Hi, guys!

0:41:24 > 0:41:27- We've got a question for you. - How can we remember so many things?

0:41:27 > 0:41:32That's a great question! How CAN we remember so many things?

0:41:32 > 0:41:34I wouldn't mind improving my memory.

0:41:34 > 0:41:38Why don't you come down and we'll do some experiments to investigate.

0:41:38 > 0:41:42- See you soon, Nina! Bye.- Bye!

0:41:42 > 0:41:44I'll need some help to answer this.

0:41:44 > 0:41:48and I know just who to ask. OK, Neurons, time to get to work.

0:42:05 > 0:42:08ALL: Neurons at the ready, Nina!

0:42:08 > 0:42:12OK, today's question is, how can we remember so many things?

0:42:12 > 0:42:16Which Neuron would be most helpful in finding us the answer?

0:42:16 > 0:42:18ALL: Me! Me! Me!

0:42:18 > 0:42:21Will it be fabulous Felix?

0:42:21 > 0:42:24I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.

0:42:24 > 0:42:26Will it be beautiful Belle?

0:42:26 > 0:42:31I send messages to brain from ear. If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.

0:42:31 > 0:42:33Will it be lovely Luke?

0:42:33 > 0:42:35For looking and seeing, day or night,

0:42:35 > 0:42:38I'll help you with your sense of sight.

0:42:38 > 0:42:40Will it be awesome Ollie?

0:42:40 > 0:42:43If it's pongy or whiffy but you can't tell,

0:42:43 > 0:42:47- my messages help your sense of smell. - Or will it be baby Bud?

0:42:47 > 0:42:51Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat!

0:42:51 > 0:42:54BEEPING

0:42:54 > 0:42:57It's all the Neurons!

0:42:57 > 0:43:03ALL: Go, Neurons! Go, Neurons! Go, Neurons! Go, Neurons!

0:43:03 > 0:43:07Go, Neurons! All Neurons hip-hop-happy to help, Nina!

0:43:07 > 0:43:11Today's question is how can we remember so many things.

0:43:11 > 0:43:14Because all of our senses are important in remembering things.

0:43:14 > 0:43:17I have a feeling I'll need help from all the Neurons today.

0:43:17 > 0:43:21Right, I need to get the lab ready before the experimenters arrive!

0:43:22 > 0:43:28Sam likes archery, Lewis likes pizza and Mason loves fencing.

0:43:28 > 0:43:31But they all want to know how we can remember so many things.

0:43:31 > 0:43:36For one day only, Sam, Lewis and Mason become the experimenters!

0:43:37 > 0:43:42- Hi, guys!- Hi, Nina! - Welcome to my science lab! Come in!

0:43:44 > 0:43:48Your question is, how can we remember so many things,

0:43:48 > 0:43:49which is a great question.

0:43:49 > 0:43:53- Why do you want to know? - We have to remember lots of things.

0:43:53 > 0:43:56LIke how to write our names and ride our bikes.

0:43:56 > 0:43:58We want to know how we remember.

0:43:58 > 0:44:03This morning, I had to remember to have a shower, get dressed,

0:44:03 > 0:44:06put my bunches in, eat my breakfast and brush my teeth.

0:44:06 > 0:44:10And that was all before I'd even left the house!

0:44:10 > 0:44:14I think we need to do some investigating to find out more.

0:44:14 > 0:44:17For our first experiment, we're going to use our senses!

0:44:17 > 0:44:22ALL: Woohoo! A senses experiment! We're ready, Nina!

0:44:22 > 0:44:25The things we remember are called memories

0:44:25 > 0:44:30and these memories are stored here, inside our brain.

0:44:30 > 0:44:34Our brain is the thing inside our head that controls our body

0:44:34 > 0:44:37and lets us think and remember.

0:44:37 > 0:44:41But memories start with our senses.

0:44:41 > 0:44:45Seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching.

0:44:45 > 0:44:46ALL: That's us!

0:44:46 > 0:44:48OK, experimenters.

0:44:48 > 0:44:50You're wearing blindfolds

0:44:50 > 0:44:53because I want you to find out how our different sense Neurons

0:44:53 > 0:44:55can help us remember things.

0:44:55 > 0:44:57So, gently feel what's in front of you

0:44:57 > 0:45:01and describe what it makes you think of

0:45:01 > 0:45:03- A towel.- That's right.

0:45:03 > 0:45:05When do you remember using a towel?

0:45:05 > 0:45:08When you get out the bath.

0:45:08 > 0:45:11When you're going to dry your hands when you've just had a wash.

0:45:11 > 0:45:13Great. So just by touching the towel,

0:45:13 > 0:45:18you remembered having a bath and drying your hands. Excellent.

0:45:18 > 0:45:22Have a smell of this.

0:45:22 > 0:45:23Big sniff, Lewis.

0:45:23 > 0:45:27And, Nathan. What does that remind you of?

0:45:27 > 0:45:30- Toothpaste.- Oh, you're right!

0:45:30 > 0:45:33And what does toothpaste remind you of doing?

0:45:33 > 0:45:35Brushing my teeth.

0:45:35 > 0:45:38That's right. So you're smelling the minty smell

0:45:38 > 0:45:40and it's reminding you of brushing your teeth

0:45:40 > 0:45:44Excellent, guys. Now I'm giving you all something to taste.

0:45:44 > 0:45:49Now... Pop it into your mouth.

0:45:49 > 0:45:52And describe what it is.

0:45:52 > 0:45:55- Popcorn.- Popcorn.

0:45:55 > 0:45:59- And do you remember where you've tasted that before?- Cinema.

0:45:59 > 0:46:01Yeah, the cinema, well done.

0:46:01 > 0:46:04You can take your blindfolds off for the final part of the experiment.

0:46:04 > 0:46:07Look here at this picture.

0:46:07 > 0:46:10- Tell me what you think it feels like to be there.- Warm.- Exactly.

0:46:10 > 0:46:13You can imagine that this place feels warm

0:46:13 > 0:46:16because you remember what it's like to be somewhere sunny.

0:46:16 > 0:46:19So we use our memory

0:46:19 > 0:46:23to remember how things look, sound, feel, smell and taste.

0:46:23 > 0:46:27And we can also use it to imagine what things might be like

0:46:27 > 0:46:32and then we store these memories inside our brain.

0:46:32 > 0:46:35But how do we actually remember things? Time for another experiment!

0:46:35 > 0:46:37ALL: Yay!

0:46:38 > 0:46:43Now, underneath this cloth, there are ten objects

0:46:43 > 0:46:45and I'm going to reveal them, just for a few seconds,

0:46:45 > 0:46:48and I'd like you to try and remember as many as you can.

0:46:48 > 0:46:50But no touching, OK?

0:46:50 > 0:46:52- Are you ready? - ALL: Yeah!

0:46:52 > 0:46:54Here we go!

0:47:00 > 0:47:04Oooh. OK, can you tell me all the ten objects?

0:47:04 > 0:47:06- Bell.- Bell.

0:47:06 > 0:47:08- Torch.- Magnifying Glass.

0:47:08 > 0:47:10Ooh...

0:47:10 > 0:47:12Grapes.

0:47:12 > 0:47:13- Yes.- Teddy bears.

0:47:16 > 0:47:20Let's try it again, and I'm going to give you longer to look at them.

0:47:20 > 0:47:23But I'd also like you to pick up the object

0:47:23 > 0:47:28and try and use as many of your senses as you can, OK?

0:47:28 > 0:47:30Ready, steady, go!

0:47:32 > 0:47:34SQUEAK!

0:47:34 > 0:47:35THEY GIGGLE

0:47:39 > 0:47:42SQUEAK!

0:47:42 > 0:47:44Ooh.

0:47:44 > 0:47:46NINA GIGGLES

0:47:50 > 0:47:54OK, everything back on the desk. Ooh!

0:47:56 > 0:48:00OK. Now, tell me what items you remember.

0:48:00 > 0:48:02The torch.

0:48:02 > 0:48:06- Yeah, anything else? - The candles.- Very good.

0:48:06 > 0:48:11The jelly beans, because of the different flavours.

0:48:11 > 0:48:13So you liked the taste of the jelly beans.

0:48:13 > 0:48:16- The orange toy. - Why did you remember that, Sam?

0:48:16 > 0:48:19Because it was quite loud.

0:48:19 > 0:48:21Yeah, it did make a loud, squeaky noise.

0:48:21 > 0:48:24The soap smells nice.

0:48:24 > 0:48:29- Oh, so that's why you remembered it? - The bell, it makes lots of noise.

0:48:29 > 0:48:32Well done! You have amazing memories.

0:48:32 > 0:48:35And you remembered more the second time round

0:48:35 > 0:48:39because you had lots more time to examine them

0:48:39 > 0:48:42using more of your senses.

0:48:42 > 0:48:45So rather than just seeing the shiny bell,

0:48:45 > 0:48:48you knew that it made a loud noise.

0:48:48 > 0:48:49SHE LAUGHS

0:48:49 > 0:48:54But how do our brains take information from our senses

0:48:54 > 0:48:56and make memories?

0:48:56 > 0:48:59To find out, we need to take a step in the right direction. Let's go!

0:48:59 > 0:49:00ALL: Yeah!

0:49:03 > 0:49:06I wonder where Nina is taking us.

0:49:06 > 0:49:08She talked about taking a step.

0:49:08 > 0:49:11I hope she means down steps.

0:49:11 > 0:49:14But this doesn't look like a dance floor.

0:49:14 > 0:49:16Wow, we're on a beach!

0:49:16 > 0:49:22OK, experimenters, we've discovered that memories start with our senses

0:49:22 > 0:49:26When we see, hear, smell, taste or touch something.

0:49:26 > 0:49:30And our memories are stored up here, in our brain.

0:49:30 > 0:49:34But how does our brain remember things? Let's get experimenting!

0:49:34 > 0:49:36ALL: Yeah!

0:49:36 > 0:49:39When we remember something, it makes a path in our brain,

0:49:39 > 0:49:43so each of us is going to make a path

0:49:43 > 0:49:47in this sand by walking from here to one of those flags.

0:49:47 > 0:49:50One, two, three, go!

0:50:05 > 0:50:09Hey-hey! Well done, guys, we made a path in the sand!

0:50:09 > 0:50:13And once a path is there, it should be easy to follow again.

0:50:13 > 0:50:15Let's try it.

0:50:36 > 0:50:40We did it! And what's happening to the paths?

0:50:40 > 0:50:42They're getting deeper, Nina.

0:50:42 > 0:50:45Yes, the more times you use the same path,

0:50:45 > 0:50:49the deeper the footprints will get, making it even easier to follow.

0:50:49 > 0:50:51And it's the same with our memories.

0:50:51 > 0:50:53The more often we remember something,

0:50:53 > 0:50:55the stronger the memory gets.

0:50:55 > 0:50:57So, let's follow the paths again!

0:51:07 > 0:51:11Nina's really putting her foot down today! Ha-ha-ha!

0:51:11 > 0:51:14These lovely, clear paths we've made

0:51:14 > 0:51:16are a lot like the paths we make in our brain

0:51:16 > 0:51:19when we remember something over and over again.

0:51:19 > 0:51:22But, if we don't try and remember something for a while,

0:51:22 > 0:51:24this can happen.

0:51:28 > 0:51:32- So, what do you see, experimenters? - There's paths going away, Nina.

0:51:32 > 0:51:36That's right, the paths started to fade, just like memories can.

0:51:36 > 0:51:39This makes it harder to follow the path

0:51:39 > 0:51:41and that means it can take longer to remember something.

0:51:41 > 0:51:45That's why we need to practice things over and over again,

0:51:45 > 0:51:47like riding a bike or writing our name -

0:51:47 > 0:51:50so we can remember how to do them really well.

0:51:50 > 0:51:53Now, I hope I can remember how we can get back to the lab.

0:51:53 > 0:51:56Ah, yes, I remember. This way!

0:51:57 > 0:52:02So, your question was, "How can we remember so many things?"

0:52:02 > 0:52:04And I think we've answered it.

0:52:04 > 0:52:09Memories start with our senses, when we see, hear, smell,

0:52:09 > 0:52:11taste or touch something.

0:52:11 > 0:52:14Each new memory creates a path in our brain.

0:52:14 > 0:52:17The more we remember something and use the path,

0:52:17 > 0:52:19the stronger the memory gets.

0:52:19 > 0:52:22It's just like when you learn to ride a bike -

0:52:22 > 0:52:26the more you practice, the easier it is to remember how to do it again.

0:52:26 > 0:52:28So I hope that's answered your question

0:52:28 > 0:52:32and, so you don't forget all the fun we had today,

0:52:32 > 0:52:35I've got you these - little memory bags!

0:52:35 > 0:52:37ALL: Thanks, Nina. Bye!

0:52:37 > 0:52:39Bye!

0:52:42 > 0:52:46If you want to find out more about the science all around us,

0:52:46 > 0:52:50go to the Nina section on the Cbeebies website. Have fun!

0:52:50 > 0:52:52- Heart's beating.- Lung's breathing.

0:52:52 > 0:52:55- Finger's feeling.- Mouth's eating!

0:52:55 > 0:52:57And don't forget your brain!

0:52:57 > 0:53:00# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies

0:53:00 > 0:53:02# Inside and ou-ou-out

0:53:02 > 0:53:05# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies

0:53:05 > 0:53:07# Come on, let's find out about

0:53:07 > 0:53:10# Handy hands and bendy knees

0:53:10 > 0:53:13# Stretchy backs And noses that sneeze

0:53:13 > 0:53:15# We all have brilliant bodies

0:53:15 > 0:53:17# Brilliant bodies!

0:53:17 > 0:53:20# Every part has a job to do

0:53:20 > 0:53:23# Even scabs and earwax too

0:53:23 > 0:53:25# We all have brilliant bodies

0:53:25 > 0:53:27# Brilliant bodies!

0:53:27 > 0:53:31# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies

0:53:31 > 0:53:33# Lashes to protect our eyes

0:53:33 > 0:53:36# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies

0:53:36 > 0:53:39# And don't forget to exercise. #

0:53:39 > 0:53:42I really enjoyed myself today.

0:53:42 > 0:53:46The minty toothpaste smell reminded me of Nina brushing her teeth.

0:53:46 > 0:53:48It's been a marvellous day.

0:53:48 > 0:53:50I remember feeling the hard, metal bell.

0:53:50 > 0:53:54Ahh, it's been such a great day, man!

0:53:54 > 0:53:58I won't forget those footprints. That looked so much fun.

0:53:58 > 0:54:00And remember, everyone's body is different,

0:54:00 > 0:54:04but they're all brilliant. See you again soon, bye!

0:54:04 > 0:54:06ALL: Bye!
