1:20:53 > 1:20:55# Oh yeah! #
1:20:57 > 1:21:01Oh, hello there! I love this experiment. Hee-hee.
1:21:02 > 1:21:06I'm trying to see how far away I can get from the glass
1:21:06 > 1:21:08and still drink the juice.
1:21:15 > 1:21:19- Yes, I managed to get a drink! - BEEP BEEP
1:21:19 > 1:21:24I hear a beep, I see a flash. I wonder what they're going to ask.
1:21:27 > 1:21:30- ALL: Hi, Nina!- Hello!
1:21:30 > 1:21:35- We've got a question for you. - Why do we need blood in our body?
1:21:35 > 1:21:39That's a great question. Why do we need blood in our body?
1:21:39 > 1:21:43Our bodies have blood moving around them but what does it do?
1:21:43 > 1:21:48Why not come down to my lab and we'll investigate.
1:21:48 > 1:21:53ALL: See you soon, Nina. Bye!
1:21:53 > 1:21:56I'll need help to answer this one and I know who to ask.
1:21:56 > 1:21:59- OK, Neurons.- Time to get to work!
1:22:15 > 1:22:18ALL: Neurons at the ready, Nina.
1:22:18 > 1:22:22Today's question is, "Why do we need blood in our body?"
1:22:22 > 1:22:26Which Neuron will be most useful to answer that?
1:22:26 > 1:22:28ALL: Me! Me! Me! Oh, me!
1:22:28 > 1:22:30Will it be fabulous Felix?
1:22:30 > 1:22:35I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.
1:22:35 > 1:22:37Will it be beautiful Belle?
1:22:37 > 1:22:42I send messages to brain from ear. If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.
1:22:42 > 1:22:46- Will it be lovely Luke?- For looking and seeing, day or night,
1:22:46 > 1:22:49I'll help with your sense of sight.
1:22:49 > 1:22:53- Will it be awesome Ollie?- If it's pongy or whiffy but you can't tell,
1:22:53 > 1:22:57- my messages help your sense of smell.- Or will it be baby Bud?
1:22:57 > 1:23:01Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat!
1:23:06 > 1:23:09- It's Luke!- Yes!
1:23:09 > 1:23:11ALL: Go, Luke! Go, Luke! Go, Luke!
1:23:11 > 1:23:14Go, Luke! Go, Luke! Go, Luke!
1:23:14 > 1:23:19Cool, Nina. I'll be looking out to help you.
1:23:19 > 1:23:22Today's question is, "Why do we need blood in our body?"
1:23:22 > 1:23:24Blood is a red colour we can see,
1:23:24 > 1:23:27so Luke, our sight Neuron, is helping me.
1:23:27 > 1:23:31Stand by, Neurons. I may need help from all of you.
1:23:31 > 1:23:35I'll get the lab ready before the experimenters arrive.
1:23:36 > 1:23:41George likes football. Ryan likes curries and Gary loves superheroes.
1:23:41 > 1:23:45But they all want to know why we need blood in our body.
1:23:45 > 1:23:50So today, for one day only, George, Ryan and Jack are the Experimenters!
1:23:52 > 1:23:54- Hi, guys!- ALL: Hi, Nina!
1:23:54 > 1:23:58Welcome to my science lab. Come in.
1:23:58 > 1:24:02Now, you asked "Why do we need blood in our body?"
1:24:02 > 1:24:05A great question but why do you want to know?
1:24:05 > 1:24:11If we fall over and cut ourselves, sometimes blood comes out.
1:24:11 > 1:24:13We want to know why blood is in our body.
1:24:13 > 1:24:17Yes, if we cut ourselves, sometimes a bit of blood comes out
1:24:17 > 1:24:22but it's nothing to be afraid of because it usually stops quickly.
1:24:22 > 1:24:27There's lots to find out so let's start by using our senses.
1:24:27 > 1:24:31ALL: Woop-woo! Our senses experiment. We're ready, Nina!
1:24:31 > 1:24:34Blood is a runny liquid in our bodies.
1:24:34 > 1:24:36We don't have any blood here
1:24:36 > 1:24:40but we do have a runny liquid in these beakers.
1:24:40 > 1:24:44Water. I've added some colouring so we can see it better.
1:24:44 > 1:24:47Let's count the beakers together!
1:24:47 > 1:24:51ALL: One, two, three, four, five.
1:24:51 > 1:24:54Yes, we have five beakers of coloured water.
1:24:54 > 1:24:57Does that look like a lot of water?
1:24:57 > 1:25:00- Quite a lot.- That's right.
1:25:00 > 1:25:03Each beaker has one litre of coloured water in it.
1:25:03 > 1:25:09And someone about my size has about five litres of blood inside them.
1:25:09 > 1:25:11Which is all five of these beakers.
1:25:11 > 1:25:15How much blood do you think children's bodies have?
1:25:15 > 1:25:19- A bit less?- Well, a child about your age and size might have
1:25:19 > 1:25:24about two and half litres of blood inside them which is this much.
1:25:24 > 1:25:27Wow, Nina. That's a lot of blood.
1:25:27 > 1:25:32I know, Luke, our bodies do have quite a lot of brilliant blood
1:25:32 > 1:25:34but where is it all?
1:25:34 > 1:25:38This is a picture of the inside of our bodies
1:25:38 > 1:25:42and these red lines are what we call blood vessels.
1:25:42 > 1:25:46Blood vessels? Oooh, I like the sound of that.
1:25:46 > 1:25:51Blood vessels are a bit like little roads inside our brilliant bodies
1:25:51 > 1:25:55but instead of cars, it's blood that travels along them.
1:25:55 > 1:25:59Or through them. Because blood vessels are little, tiny tubes.
1:25:59 > 1:26:05To see how, do you want to pick up this great, big tube here.
1:26:05 > 1:26:10What can you see happening to the coloured water inside?
1:26:10 > 1:26:13- The water's moving around the tube. - That's right.
1:26:13 > 1:26:17If we imagine that the red water inside the tube is blood,
1:26:17 > 1:26:21we can see how blood moves through the blood vessels around our body.
1:26:21 > 1:26:24And...where do the blood vessels go to?
1:26:24 > 1:26:28Head, arms, fingers, legs...
1:26:28 > 1:26:32- And feet! - And feet, that's right!
1:26:32 > 1:26:36But why do we need blood to travel every part of our bodies?
1:26:36 > 1:26:39Let's go somewhere to find out more.
1:26:39 > 1:26:42- It's time to get our pulses racing! - ALL: Yay!
1:26:45 > 1:26:50Here we go! I can't wait to see where we'll end up today!
1:26:50 > 1:26:55Nina said something about racing. Perhaps we're going to a sports day.
1:26:55 > 1:26:58With funny sack races and a three-legged race.
1:26:58 > 1:27:03And my favourite, the egg and spoon race! Ha-ha!
1:27:03 > 1:27:07I've a feeling, it's a different kind of racing.
1:27:07 > 1:27:10Sharpen your senses, Neurons. We're here.
1:27:10 > 1:27:14Our senses experiment showed us that we have lots of blood vessels
1:27:14 > 1:27:17that carry blood to every part of our bodies.
1:27:17 > 1:27:20But why does the blood do this?
1:27:20 > 1:27:24Our blood is made up of lots of very important things,
1:27:24 > 1:27:27including something called red blood cells.
1:27:27 > 1:27:30Did Nina say, "red mud smells"?
1:27:30 > 1:27:34No, Ollie. Red blood cells.
1:27:34 > 1:27:39Red blood cells carry something special around the body
1:27:39 > 1:27:44and drop it off where the body needs it. A bit like a delivery driver.
1:27:44 > 1:27:49Do you guys fancy making deliveries in these speedy go-karts?
1:27:49 > 1:27:51- ALL: Yay!- OK, great.
1:27:51 > 1:27:55You will pretend to be red blood cells and you're going to deliver...
1:27:55 > 1:27:57these balloons.
1:27:57 > 1:28:02- So, who can tell me what's inside this balloon?- Air.- That's right.
1:28:02 > 1:28:06Air contains the special thing our bodies need called oxygen.
1:28:06 > 1:28:11Oxygen is an invisible gas and we breathe oxygen in from the air
1:28:11 > 1:28:14and red blood cells carry it around the body
1:28:14 > 1:28:18where it's needed to do lots of important things.
1:28:18 > 1:28:22OK, take a balloon.
1:28:22 > 1:28:26On your marks, get set...
1:28:26 > 1:28:28BEEP BEEP!
1:28:32 > 1:28:35ALL: Yay, look at them go!
1:28:35 > 1:28:39Come on, the red blood cells! Get that oxygen moving!
1:28:39 > 1:28:44That's an oxygen being delivered to the hand.
1:28:44 > 1:28:46Oh, good job, red blood cell Gary.
1:28:51 > 1:28:57Ryan picked up some more oxygen and he's taking it to the leg.
1:28:57 > 1:28:59Fantastic work!
1:29:00 > 1:29:04Oh, and a lovely delivery to the brain by Gary.
1:29:08 > 1:29:11What about the feet? They haven't had any oxygen!
1:29:11 > 1:29:13Oh, that's it!
1:29:13 > 1:29:17Good delivery of some oxygen there by red blood cell George. Well done!
1:29:28 > 1:29:34Fantastic! You delivered the oxygen to the different parts of the body!
1:29:34 > 1:29:39We discovered that our blood is made up of lots of different things,
1:29:39 > 1:29:42including lots and lots of red blood cells.
1:29:42 > 1:29:46These have the important job of delivering oxygen around our body.
1:29:46 > 1:29:50Other stuff is carried around our body in our blood.
1:29:50 > 1:29:55Like water. And good things from our food which we need for energy.
1:29:55 > 1:29:59What else does blood do? Back to the lab for a final experiment!
1:29:59 > 1:30:01ALL: Yay!
1:30:03 > 1:30:07As well as the red blood cells that carry oxygen,
1:30:07 > 1:30:10our blood also contains white blood cells.
1:30:10 > 1:30:13White blood cells helps us fight off infection.
1:30:13 > 1:30:18- Anyone know what infection is? - Is it when you get ill?- It can be.
1:30:18 > 1:30:23Infections are caused when tiny, invisible bugs called germs
1:30:23 > 1:30:25get into our body and make us ill.
1:30:25 > 1:30:28Germs are often found on our hands
1:30:28 > 1:30:30which is why it's so important
1:30:30 > 1:30:35to wash your hands before you eat and after going to the toilet.
1:30:35 > 1:30:37But if germs do get into our bodies,
1:30:37 > 1:30:41our white blood cells find them and destroy them.
1:30:41 > 1:30:45For this experiment, we're going to imagine that this red paddling pool
1:30:45 > 1:30:50is some blood and let's look at the big balloons above us.
1:30:50 > 1:30:56We'll pretend the green balloons are nasty germs that cause infection.
1:30:56 > 1:31:01You've got to spot any green germ balloons that get in to the pool
1:31:01 > 1:31:06and burst them! Because you're going to be the white blood cells.
1:31:06 > 1:31:09- Everyone ready?! - ALL: Ready, Nina!
1:31:09 > 1:31:13Watch our for those green germ balloons!
1:31:18 > 1:31:21Come on, the white blood cells!
1:31:27 > 1:31:32Oh! This is the noisiest experiment ever!
1:31:32 > 1:31:35One left! Get it!
1:31:35 > 1:31:40Brilliant, guys! You all did an excellent job as white blood cells.
1:31:40 > 1:31:44You spotted the nasty green germs that shouldn't be in our body
1:31:44 > 1:31:49and destroyed them, protecting the body from infection. Well done!
1:31:54 > 1:31:58Your question was, "Why do we need blood in our body?"
1:31:58 > 1:32:02I think we've answered it. We discovered that blood travels
1:32:02 > 1:32:05from the tops of our heads to the tips of our toes
1:32:05 > 1:32:08inside little tubes called blood vessels.
1:32:08 > 1:32:12Our blood carries important things around the body,
1:32:12 > 1:32:16like water and the good things from the food we eat.
1:32:16 > 1:32:20We also found out that our red blood cells deliver the oxygen
1:32:20 > 1:32:24that our bodies need to do many special jobs.
1:32:24 > 1:32:29Our white blood cells destroy nasty germs that could cause infections.
1:32:29 > 1:32:34- I hope that's answered your question.- ALL: Thanks, Nina! Bye!
1:32:34 > 1:32:36Bye!
1:32:40 > 1:32:44If you want to find out more about the science around us,
1:32:44 > 1:32:48go to the Nina section on the CBeebies website. Have fun!
1:32:48 > 1:32:53- # Hearts beating- Lungs breathing - Fingers feeling- Mouth eating
1:32:53 > 1:32:55# And don't forget your brain!

1:33:11 > 1:33:15- # We all have brilliant bodies - Brilliant bodies!
1:33:15 > 1:33:18# Every part has a job to do
1:33:18 > 1:33:21# Even scabs and earwax too
1:33:21 > 1:33:25- # We all have brilliant bodies - Brilliant bodies!

1:33:37 > 1:33:40Ah, it's been such a great day, man.
1:33:40 > 1:33:42Seeing all those blood vessels.
1:33:42 > 1:33:45They go to every part of the body.
1:33:45 > 1:33:47I really enjoyed myself today.
1:33:47 > 1:33:52The children had such fun pretending to be red blood cells.
1:33:52 > 1:33:56I've had a fabby day!
1:33:56 > 1:34:00The white blood cells fighting off the nasty germs were fantastic!
1:34:00 > 1:34:05And remember everyone's body is different but they're all brilliant!
1:34:05 > 1:34:08- See you again, soon! Bye! - ALL: Bye!
