0:40:56 > 0:40:58Oh, hello.

0:40:58 > 0:41:02It was my birthday yesterday and I had such a lovely time,

0:41:02 > 0:41:05with balloons and presents.

0:41:05 > 0:41:07And this beautiful birthday cake.

0:41:07 > 0:41:10I should have blown out the candles quicker.

0:41:10 > 0:41:12I spent so long making a wish,

0:41:12 > 0:41:16that the candle wax melted onto the cake. Oops!

0:41:16 > 0:41:17ELECTRONIC BEEPS

0:41:17 > 0:41:22Oh! I hear a beep, I see a flash. I wonder what they're going to ask?

0:41:26 > 0:41:30ALL: Hello, Nina!

0:41:30 > 0:41:31Hi, guys.

0:41:31 > 0:41:35- We've got a question for you. - What is earwax for?

0:41:35 > 0:41:36That's a great question.

0:41:36 > 0:41:39What is earwax for?

0:41:39 > 0:41:43Our brilliant bodies make a wax in our ears, but what's it doing there?

0:41:43 > 0:41:45Why don't you come to my lab

0:41:45 > 0:41:48and do some experiments to investigate?

0:41:48 > 0:41:51ALL: See you soon, Nina. Bye!

0:41:51 > 0:41:54I'm going to need some help to answer this one

0:41:54 > 0:41:58and I know just who to ask. OK, Neurons. Time to get to work.

0:42:15 > 0:42:18ALL: Neurons at the ready, Nina.

0:42:18 > 0:42:21OK. Today's question is, "What is earwax for?"

0:42:21 > 0:42:25Which Neuron will be most useful to help find the answer?

0:42:25 > 0:42:28ALL: Me! Me! Me! Oh, me!

0:42:28 > 0:42:31Will it be fabulous Felix?

0:42:31 > 0:42:35I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.

0:42:35 > 0:42:37Will it be beautiful Belle?

0:42:37 > 0:42:42I send messages to brain from ear. If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.

0:42:42 > 0:42:45- Will it be lovely Luke? - For looking and seeing, day or night,

0:42:45 > 0:42:48I'll help you with your sense of sight.

0:42:48 > 0:42:53- Will it be awesome Ollie?- If it's pongy or whiffy but you can't tell,

0:42:53 > 0:42:55my messages help your sense of smell.

0:42:55 > 0:42:59- Or will it be baby Bud? - Sour, salty, bitter or sweet,

0:42:59 > 0:43:01I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat!

0:43:05 > 0:43:08- It's Belle.- Yes!

0:43:08 > 0:43:12ALL: Go, Belle! Go, Belle! Go, Belle!

0:43:12 > 0:43:14Go, Belle! Go, Belle! Go, Belle!

0:43:14 > 0:43:18- Go, Belle! - Brilliant! I'm all ears, Nina.

0:43:18 > 0:43:21Today's question is, "What is earwax for?"

0:43:21 > 0:43:24It's all about our ears, so Belle is helping us.

0:43:24 > 0:43:28Stand by, Neurons. I've a feeling I'll need help from you all.

0:43:28 > 0:43:32I need to get the lab ready for the experimenters.

0:43:33 > 0:43:37Evie likes riding her bike, Josh likes painting

0:43:37 > 0:43:39and Xanthe loves jam sandwiches.

0:43:39 > 0:43:42But they all want to know what earwax is for.

0:43:42 > 0:43:46So today, Evie, Josh and Xanthe become The Experimenters!

0:43:50 > 0:43:53- Hi, guys.- ALL: Hi, Nina.

0:43:53 > 0:43:55Welcome to my science lab. Come in.

0:43:57 > 0:44:00Now, your question is, "What is earwax for?"

0:44:00 > 0:44:03A great question! Why do you want to know?

0:44:03 > 0:44:06It's a bit strange having wax in our ears.

0:44:06 > 0:44:08Why's it there?

0:44:08 > 0:44:11It does seem a funny thing for our brilliant bodies to make.

0:44:11 > 0:44:15But remember, never put your fingers in your ears to feel it.

0:44:15 > 0:44:19No. That would make our ears very sore.

0:44:19 > 0:44:21It certainly would, Belle.

0:44:21 > 0:44:25But earwax must be there for a reason.

0:44:25 > 0:44:27We need to investigate and find out more.

0:44:27 > 0:44:31For our first experiment, we use our senses.

0:44:31 > 0:44:35ALL: Whoop-woo! A senses experiment! We're ready, Nina.

0:44:35 > 0:44:39There are lots of different types of wax in the world.

0:44:39 > 0:44:42Now, these candles are made of a type of wax.

0:44:42 > 0:44:46So let's touch them and tell me what they feel like.

0:44:47 > 0:44:50- Hard.- Smooth.

0:44:50 > 0:44:54They feel sort of slippery and greasy.

0:44:54 > 0:44:57Greasy? That's just what they feel like.

0:44:57 > 0:45:01OK, now pop your finger in there. What does that feel like?

0:45:01 > 0:45:03- Gooey.- Slimy.

0:45:03 > 0:45:07Well, this is called styling wax. Hey, and you're right.

0:45:07 > 0:45:09It is gooey and slimy.

0:45:09 > 0:45:12So, we know that wax can be hard and greasy

0:45:12 > 0:45:15and it can be soft, like this styling wax.

0:45:15 > 0:45:18Ah! Who recognises these?

0:45:18 > 0:45:21- Colouring crayons.- That's right.

0:45:21 > 0:45:23Crayons are made of a type of wax too.

0:45:23 > 0:45:27I'd like you to pick a crayon and colour in your shapes.

0:45:39 > 0:45:43Well done, guys. That was some great colouring in.

0:45:43 > 0:45:46Now, what does the crayon on the paper look like?

0:45:46 > 0:45:48Colourful and shiny.

0:45:48 > 0:45:50Yes, and it's also waterproof.

0:45:50 > 0:45:55- What does waterproof mean?- Well, it means that it keeps water out.

0:45:55 > 0:45:59Let me show you. Now, I've got a dropper here with some water in it

0:45:59 > 0:46:02and I'm going to put it onto this sheet of paper.

0:46:05 > 0:46:08Ooh, it's getting all wet.

0:46:08 > 0:46:12The water is soaking into the paper and making it really wet.

0:46:12 > 0:46:16Try putting some water onto your crayon pictures.

0:46:19 > 0:46:21And, squeeze!

0:46:21 > 0:46:22So what can you see?

0:46:22 > 0:46:26The water's sitting on top of the wax.

0:46:26 > 0:46:27Yes.

0:46:27 > 0:46:32So we know that wax can be hard and greasy and soft and squidgy.

0:46:32 > 0:46:33And it's waterproof.

0:46:33 > 0:46:37But we still don't know why we have wax in our ears.

0:46:37 > 0:46:39I think for our next experiment,

0:46:39 > 0:46:42we need to go in search of some rub-a-dub-dub.

0:46:42 > 0:46:45- Let's go, experimenters.- ALL: Yay!

0:46:48 > 0:46:51Off we go for another adventure.

0:46:51 > 0:46:53What does Nina mean by rub-a-dub-dub?

0:46:53 > 0:46:58Look! Horses! Maybe they need some rub-a-dub, Luke.

0:46:58 > 0:47:03No, you don't rub horses, Bud. You brush them.

0:47:03 > 0:47:06Sharpen your sense, Neurons. I have a feeling

0:47:06 > 0:47:09that this will be fun.

0:47:19 > 0:47:21- Hello, officers.- BOTH: Hello, Nina.

0:47:21 > 0:47:25Policemen and women on horses are called mounted police.

0:47:25 > 0:47:28There are lots of police horses at these stables,

0:47:28 > 0:47:32but do you have any idea why I brought you here?

0:47:32 > 0:47:34ALL: No, Nina.

0:47:34 > 0:47:37Well, if you follow me, I'll show you. This way!

0:47:38 > 0:47:41Ooh, I just love it here!

0:47:41 > 0:47:45Those horses make lovely neighing, snorty noises.

0:47:49 > 0:47:54These are the saddles and bridles mounted police use in their work,

0:47:54 > 0:47:56and they're all made of shiny leather.

0:47:56 > 0:47:59What does it feel like?

0:47:59 > 0:48:01Smooth and soft.

0:48:01 > 0:48:04Yes, it is. It's lovely and soft.

0:48:04 > 0:48:06But look at this one.

0:48:13 > 0:48:15This saddle doesn't good, does it?

0:48:15 > 0:48:18And it feels different too.

0:48:18 > 0:48:21It feels hard and rough.

0:48:21 > 0:48:25Yeah, that's because the leather is cracked and dry.

0:48:25 > 0:48:29It needs some looking after, and I have just the thing here.

0:48:29 > 0:48:30This is beeswax.

0:48:30 > 0:48:33It's a type of wax made by bees.

0:48:33 > 0:48:37OLLIE SNIFFS It smells wonderful!

0:48:37 > 0:48:40The more wax we put on the leather, the softer

0:48:40 > 0:48:42and shinier it will become.

0:48:42 > 0:48:45And the wax will also protect the saddle from the rain,

0:48:45 > 0:48:48because as we discovered earlier, wax is waterproof.

0:48:48 > 0:48:52Come on, experimenters. Time for rub-a-dub-dub!

0:49:04 > 0:49:06There! That's looking great.

0:49:06 > 0:49:10And it's feeling soft too. Well done.

0:49:10 > 0:49:15But, Nina, what's this got to do with our ears?

0:49:15 > 0:49:19Well, Xanthe, although we can't see it, there's skin inside our ears

0:49:19 > 0:49:23which must be kept nice and soft, like this leather saddle.

0:49:23 > 0:49:26And that's what our earwax does.

0:49:26 > 0:49:31It softens the skin inside our ears and stops it getting itchy and sore.

0:49:31 > 0:49:34But there's one more thing wax does to protect us.

0:49:34 > 0:49:38- Let's go back to the lab for one final experiment.- ALL: Yay!

0:49:41 > 0:49:45OK, now here I have a big model of an ear.

0:49:45 > 0:49:48This part is called the auricle.

0:49:48 > 0:49:50- What-icle?- Auricle, Bud.

0:49:50 > 0:49:53It's the part of the ear we can see.

0:49:53 > 0:49:57And the part inside is called the ear canal.

0:49:57 > 0:49:59That's where earwax is made.

0:49:59 > 0:50:03We're going to pretend that these cones are our ears.

0:50:03 > 0:50:07And you guys are going to put some of that sticky stuff

0:50:07 > 0:50:10all around the inside of that cone. Go for it!

0:50:22 > 0:50:24Excellent! Nice and sticky.

0:50:24 > 0:50:27This is like the wax inside our ears.

0:50:27 > 0:50:30What about the other cone, Nina?

0:50:30 > 0:50:33Ah, well we're going to leave that one as it is.

0:50:33 > 0:50:36It's like an ear with no wax.

0:50:36 > 0:50:39We have shakers here with glittery bits in

0:50:39 > 0:50:44that we're going to sprinkle onto the inside of the cones.

0:50:44 > 0:50:48These are like bits of dust and dirt that get into our ears

0:50:48 > 0:50:49from the air around us.

0:50:49 > 0:50:53Remember, you should never put anything in your ear,

0:50:53 > 0:50:55as it might damage it.

0:50:55 > 0:51:00That's right, Belle. We must never pour anything into our real ears.

0:51:00 > 0:51:03OK. One, two, three, get shaking!

0:51:10 > 0:51:13OK, we can stop sprinkling. Let's a have a look.

0:51:13 > 0:51:15Which one of our pretend ears

0:51:15 > 0:51:18has the most glittery bits in the bottom?

0:51:18 > 0:51:20This one.

0:51:20 > 0:51:23The dry cone with no sticky stuff

0:51:23 > 0:51:26has definitely got more glittery bits down the bottom.

0:51:26 > 0:51:28Why do you think that is?

0:51:28 > 0:51:32Because there was nothing to stop it going down.

0:51:32 > 0:51:34That's right! The sticky stuff

0:51:34 > 0:51:37on the other cone trapped all the glittery bits

0:51:37 > 0:51:41and stopped it from going down into the bottom.

0:51:41 > 0:51:45What happens to the dirty wax, Nina?

0:51:45 > 0:51:50Well, our ears have a clever way of moving wax, along with trapped dirt,

0:51:50 > 0:51:51out of our ears.

0:51:51 > 0:51:55So they can be washed away in a bath or a shower.

0:51:59 > 0:52:02Your question was, "What is earwax for?"

0:52:02 > 0:52:04And I think we've answered it.

0:52:04 > 0:52:09Earwax is a shiny, sticky substance that is made inside our ears.

0:52:09 > 0:52:13It keeps the skin inside our ears soft and healthy.

0:52:13 > 0:52:17It also traps the dirt and dust that could be bad for our ears

0:52:17 > 0:52:19and helps our body to get rid of it.

0:52:19 > 0:52:23Remember, we must never put anything inside our ears,

0:52:23 > 0:52:24because they don't like it.

0:52:24 > 0:52:28And thanks to our clever earwax, our brilliant ears

0:52:28 > 0:52:30can look after themselves.

0:52:30 > 0:52:32I hope that's answered your question.

0:52:32 > 0:52:35ALL: Thanks, Nina! Bye!

0:52:35 > 0:52:36Bye!

0:52:36 > 0:52:38NINA LAUGHS

0:52:40 > 0:52:43If you want to find out more about science all around us,

0:52:43 > 0:52:48go to the Nina section of the CBeebies website. Have fun!

0:52:48 > 0:52:53- Hearts beating.- Lungs breathing. - Fingers feeling.- Mouths eating.

0:52:53 > 0:52:54And don't forget your brain!

0:52:54 > 0:52:57# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies

0:52:57 > 0:53:00# Inside and o-o-out

0:53:00 > 0:53:03# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies

0:53:03 > 0:53:05# Come on, let's find out about

0:53:05 > 0:53:08# Our handy hands and bendy knees

0:53:08 > 0:53:10# Stretchy backs and noses that sneeze

0:53:10 > 0:53:13# We all have brilliant bodies... #

0:53:13 > 0:53:15ALL: Brilliant bodies!

0:53:15 > 0:53:17# Every part has a job to do

0:53:17 > 0:53:20# Even scabs and earwax too

0:53:20 > 0:53:23# We all have brilliant bodies... #

0:53:23 > 0:53:25ALL: Brilliant bodies!

0:53:25 > 0:53:28# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies

0:53:28 > 0:53:30# Lashes to protect our eyes

0:53:30 > 0:53:33# Brilliant bodies, brilliant bodies

0:53:33 > 0:53:37# And don't forget to exercise. #

0:53:37 > 0:53:39It's been a marvellous day.

0:53:39 > 0:53:42We've discovered that wax can be hard and shiny,

0:53:42 > 0:53:45and soft and squidgy too.

0:53:45 > 0:53:47I really enjoyed myself today.

0:53:47 > 0:53:51The smell of all those polished leather saddles was brilliant.

0:53:51 > 0:53:55Ah, it's been such a great day, man.

0:53:55 > 0:53:57I loved seeing all that shiny glitter.

0:53:57 > 0:54:00Remember, everyone's body is different,

0:54:00 > 0:54:03but they're all brilliant. See you again soon! Bye!

0:54:03 > 0:54:05ALL: Bye!
