0:01:11 > 0:01:15Ho-ho! I hear a beep, I see a flash, I wonder what they're going to ask.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21- ALL: Hi, Nina!- Hi!

0:01:21 > 0:01:26- We've got a question for you. - Why don't we live on other planets?

0:01:26 > 0:01:27That's a great question!

0:01:27 > 0:01:29Why don't we live on other planets?

0:01:29 > 0:01:32Oh! This will be very interesting to explore.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35Come down to my workshop and we'll investigate.

0:01:35 > 0:01:40- ALL: See you soon, Nina! Bye!- Bye!

0:01:40 > 0:01:42I'm going to need some help to answer this,

0:01:44 > 0:01:46OK, Neurons, time to get to work!

0:02:02 > 0:02:05ALL: Neurons at the ready, Nina!

0:02:05 > 0:02:08OK, today's question is, why don't we live on other planets?

0:02:08 > 0:02:12Which Neuron will be most useful in helping us find the answer?

0:02:12 > 0:02:14ALL: Me! Me! Me!

0:02:15 > 0:02:18Will it be fabulous Felix?

0:02:18 > 0:02:20I can help so very much,

0:02:20 > 0:02:22if you need the sense of touch.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24Will it be beautiful Belle?

0:02:24 > 0:02:26I send messages from brain to ear,

0:02:26 > 0:02:28if there's a sound I'll help you hear.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30Will it be lovely Luke?

0:02:30 > 0:02:32For looking and seeing, day or night,

0:02:32 > 0:02:35I'll help you with your sense of sight.

0:02:35 > 0:02:36Will it be awesome Ollie?

0:02:36 > 0:02:39If it's pongy or whiffy, but you can't tell,

0:02:39 > 0:02:42my messages help your sense of smell.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44Or will it be baby Bud?

0:02:44 > 0:02:46Sour, salty, bitter or sweet,

0:02:46 > 0:02:49I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51BEEPING

0:02:52 > 0:02:55- It's Felix! - CHEERING

0:02:55 > 0:03:00NEURONS: Go, Felix! Go, Felix! Go, Felix! Go, Felix! Go, Felix!

0:03:00 > 0:03:02Go, Felix! Go, Felix!

0:03:02 > 0:03:06Marvellous! A little touch can mean so much, Nina!

0:03:06 > 0:03:10Today's question is - why don't we live on other planets?

0:03:10 > 0:03:13Because we feel the cold, the wind and the heat,

0:03:13 > 0:03:16Felix, our touch Neuron, will be helping us today.

0:03:16 > 0:03:17But stand by, Neurons.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19I may need help from all of you.

0:03:19 > 0:03:23I need to get the workshop ready before the explorers arrive.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26Maha loves going to parties,

0:03:26 > 0:03:28Matthew loves playing football

0:03:28 > 0:03:30and Hannah loves the seaside,

0:03:30 > 0:03:34but they all want to know, why don't we live on other planets?

0:03:34 > 0:03:36There are lots of planets.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38We can travel into space.

0:03:38 > 0:03:41Why don't we live on other planets?

0:03:42 > 0:03:44So today, for one day only,

0:03:44 > 0:03:47Matthew, Maha and Hannah become the explorers!

0:03:52 > 0:03:53Hi, guys.

0:03:53 > 0:03:55- ALL: Hi, Nina. - Welcome to my workshop

0:03:55 > 0:03:58and thank you for your great question -

0:03:58 > 0:04:00why don't we live on other planets?

0:04:00 > 0:04:04To find out the answer, let's start by using our senses.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07NEURONS: Whoop-woo! A senses experiment!

0:04:07 > 0:04:09We're ready, Nina!

0:04:09 > 0:04:12We're we have a model of our solar system

0:04:12 > 0:04:15and this is planet Earth, where we live,

0:04:15 > 0:04:17and there's lots of other planets too.

0:04:17 > 0:04:19Here's the sun in the middle.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23The Earth looks blue from far away

0:04:23 > 0:04:25because it's mostly covered in water.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27And this planet next to it

0:04:27 > 0:04:30is the same size as planet Earth.

0:04:30 > 0:04:31It's a yellowy colour

0:04:31 > 0:04:33and it's called Venus.

0:04:33 > 0:04:37And here we have a picture of Venus, but closer up.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40What do you think those things on the surface are?

0:04:40 > 0:04:42There's clouds, Nina.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45That's right! They're thick clouds.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48Now I'm going to make a cloud, just like the ones on Venus,

0:04:48 > 0:04:51in this tank using special equipment.

0:04:52 > 0:04:53Just put my gloves on.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55Watch this, guys.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06NEURONS: Wow!

0:05:06 > 0:05:09And the Ninacam's in there so it can see inside the cloud.

0:05:09 > 0:05:14- LUKE:- I can't see anything, Nina. Just thick, swirling cloud.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16That's right, Luke.

0:05:16 > 0:05:18The clouds on Venus are so thick

0:05:18 > 0:05:21that you wouldn't be able to see the sun at all.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23- BELLE:- No sunshine, Nina?

0:05:23 > 0:05:25Does that mean it's cold all the time?

0:05:25 > 0:05:29No, Belle, the sun is shining. You just wouldn't be able to see it.

0:05:29 > 0:05:33The clouds are so big and thick that they actually trap

0:05:33 > 0:05:36the warmth of the sun and you get very hot.

0:05:36 > 0:05:40The clouds are a bit like this big, thick, fluffy blanket.

0:05:40 > 0:05:44So let's see what happens if we put this blanket over us.

0:05:44 > 0:05:45Woo!

0:05:45 > 0:05:46He-he-he!

0:05:46 > 0:05:48Oh, there we go. That's nice. Oh!

0:05:50 > 0:05:52How are we feeling, explorers?

0:05:52 > 0:05:53Warm.

0:05:53 > 0:05:56I'm starting to feel very hot, Nina.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59Yes, the blanket is trapping the heat from our bodies

0:05:59 > 0:06:00and we're warming up.

0:06:00 > 0:06:04Just like the clouds trap the sun's warmth on Venus.

0:06:04 > 0:06:09In fact, it's so hot on Venus, if you were to take a spoon like this,

0:06:09 > 0:06:10it would melt.

0:06:10 > 0:06:12Oh, no!

0:06:12 > 0:06:14How would we eat pudding?

0:06:14 > 0:06:17It's so hot, most things would melt, Bud.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20It's too cloudy and too hot for us to live on Venus.

0:06:20 > 0:06:24- LUKE:- We've discovered that Venus is covered in thick clouds.

0:06:24 > 0:06:28FELIX: The clouds trap the heat like a thick, fluffy blanket,

0:06:28 > 0:06:31and that makes Venus feel very, very hot.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35- BUD:- I'm glad we live on planet Earth where spoons don't melt

0:06:35 > 0:06:38and we can eat pudding!

0:06:38 > 0:06:42Well remembered, Neurons. Venus is far too hot for us to live there.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45Is there somewhere colder we could live?

0:06:45 > 0:06:48Great question! Why don't we go somewhere cold to find out?

0:06:52 > 0:06:54- OLLIE:- Off we go for another adventure.

0:06:54 > 0:06:57- BELLE:- Hmm, where do you think we're going today?

0:06:57 > 0:07:00FELIX: Nina said we were going somewhere cold.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03- BUD:- Are we going to the North Pole?

0:07:03 > 0:07:04Cold there!

0:07:04 > 0:07:08- LUKE:- I don't think it's the North Pole, but it does look freezing.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16So far we've found out that we live in a solar system

0:07:16 > 0:07:19on planet Earth and Venus is planet nearby.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22And Venus is covered in thick clouds which make it

0:07:22 > 0:07:24so hot that we couldn't live there.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27And now I've brought you to somewhere very cold

0:07:27 > 0:07:32so we can explore what it's like to live on a cold planet like Neptune.

0:07:32 > 0:07:37Neptune is a long way from the sun, so it doesn't get much heat.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40Just like if there was a heater at the other side of this room.

0:07:40 > 0:07:44It would be a long way off, so we wouldn't feel much heat.

0:07:44 > 0:07:48Brr! I wish there was a heater, Nina. I'm feeling rather cold.

0:07:48 > 0:07:52Neptune is even colder than this, Felix.

0:07:52 > 0:07:56Now we're going to explore what it's like to walk on Neptune.

0:07:56 > 0:07:59This ball pool is a bit like the ground on Neptune.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02So, shall we have a go at walking at it?

0:08:02 > 0:08:04- ALL: Yes!- Come on!

0:08:07 > 0:08:09Woo!

0:08:13 > 0:08:14Whoa!

0:08:14 > 0:08:16THEY GIGGLE AND SHOUT

0:08:18 > 0:08:20Woo-hoo-hoo!

0:08:20 > 0:08:23FELIX: I've got a sinking feeling, Nina.

0:08:23 > 0:08:24Oh...

0:08:24 > 0:08:25Woo-hoo-hoo!

0:08:32 > 0:08:34That was great fun!

0:08:34 > 0:08:38- Now, did we stay on top of the balls or did we sink?- We sank!

0:08:38 > 0:08:39That's right!

0:08:39 > 0:08:41And that's just what it'd be like

0:08:41 > 0:08:44if we tried to stand on the ground on Neptune.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47This is what it looks like on Neptune.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50Neptune is actually made of gas.

0:08:50 > 0:08:51The gas swirls around

0:08:51 > 0:08:54so the ground isn't hard like it is here

0:08:54 > 0:08:55and we couldn't walk on it.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58It's like when we try to walk on these balls.

0:08:58 > 0:09:02- If we tried to walk on Neptune, we would sink.- BELLE:- Wow!

0:09:02 > 0:09:07We've discovered Neptune is a long way from the sun so it's very cold.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09- BUD:- It's too cold for us to live there!

0:09:09 > 0:09:11BUD'S TEETH CHATTER

0:09:11 > 0:09:15FELIX: The ground on Neptune is made of gas, so we can't stand on it.

0:09:15 > 0:09:17We'd just sink.

0:09:17 > 0:09:21Well, remember, Neurons, Neptune is too cold and too gassy

0:09:21 > 0:09:22for us to live on.

0:09:22 > 0:09:26I wonder if there's anywhere else we might be able to live.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29I think it's time for one final experiment to find out.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34You asked why don't we live on other planets?

0:09:34 > 0:09:37So far we've discovered that planet Venus

0:09:37 > 0:09:40is covered in thick clouds that make it too hot for us to live on

0:09:40 > 0:09:44and planet Neptune is too cold and too gassy for us to live there.

0:09:44 > 0:09:46For our final experiment,

0:09:46 > 0:09:50we're going to find out what it would be like to live on Mars.

0:09:50 > 0:09:53Mars is this red planet

0:09:53 > 0:09:55and this is what it looks like on Mars.

0:09:56 > 0:09:58What do you notice about it?

0:09:58 > 0:10:00It looks windy.

0:10:00 > 0:10:03Yes, Mars is very windy and very dusty,

0:10:03 > 0:10:07so let's explore what it's like to live on a windy planet.

0:10:07 > 0:10:11Now, I'm going to turn on this big fan.

0:10:11 > 0:10:15And we'll have a go at doing everyday things, but in the wind.

0:10:15 > 0:10:17So are you ready, explorers?

0:10:17 > 0:10:20- ALL: Yeah!- OK, let's go!

0:10:50 > 0:10:53- BUD:- Yes! Yummy! - FELIX: It feels very windy.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56- BELLE:- This wind is so noisy!

0:11:02 > 0:11:06Oh, well done, guys! That was very windy indeed.

0:11:06 > 0:11:08Far too windy to live in.

0:11:08 > 0:11:12Nina, are there any other planets that we can live on?

0:11:12 > 0:11:13That's a good question.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16Earth is the only planet in our solar system

0:11:16 > 0:11:20that we can live on, because it's not too hot or too cold,

0:11:20 > 0:11:24it has lots of water on it and it has the air that we need to breathe.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27Earth also has soil so we can grow things to eat.

0:11:27 > 0:11:30Eating is very important, Nina!

0:11:30 > 0:11:32That's right, Bud.

0:11:32 > 0:11:34Earth is just perfect for us to live on.

0:11:34 > 0:11:38That's why we live here and that's why we should look after it.

0:11:38 > 0:11:41# Nina and the Neurons! #

0:11:44 > 0:11:47So, your question was why don't we live on other planets?

0:11:47 > 0:11:49And I think we've answered it.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52- LUKE:- We found out that Venus is covered in thick clouds

0:11:52 > 0:11:55that are like a blanket and make it too warm for us.

0:11:55 > 0:11:58FELIX: Neptune is so far from the sun,

0:11:58 > 0:12:01it would be too cold for us to live there. Brr!

0:12:01 > 0:12:03- BELLE:- And Mars is too dusty and windy.

0:12:03 > 0:12:05Woosh!

0:12:05 > 0:12:07OLLIE: Earth is perfect for us.

0:12:07 > 0:12:11Not too hot, not too cold and it's got water, air...

0:12:11 > 0:12:14- BUD:- And we can grow my favourite thing - food!

0:12:14 > 0:12:16Well remembered, Neurons.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19I hope that's answered your question.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22ALL: Thanks, Nina! Bye!

0:12:22 > 0:12:23You're welcome! Bye!

0:12:27 > 0:12:31If you want to know more about the science all around us,

0:12:31 > 0:12:33go to the Nina section on the CBeebies website.

0:12:33 > 0:12:35Have fun!

0:12:35 > 0:12:41# Every day the sun comes up it brightens up the sky

0:13:29 > 0:13:32# We're Earth explorers. #

0:13:32 > 0:13:36Remember, exploring is about looking at the world around us,

0:13:36 > 0:13:38asking why and finding out the answer.

0:13:38 > 0:13:42Whether it's deep underground, at the end of your playground

0:13:42 > 0:13:46or way above the clouds, keep exploring our exciting world.
