0:04:01 > 0:04:04To find out the answer, let's start by using our senses.

0:04:04 > 0:04:09Whoo-whoo! A senses experiment! We're ready, Nina!

0:04:09 > 0:04:13First, let's have a think about rivers. What are they like?

0:04:13 > 0:04:14Moving water.

0:04:14 > 0:04:19Yes. A river is a lot of water that flows or moves.

0:04:19 > 0:04:23And rivers always flow in one direction - downhill.

0:04:23 > 0:04:24It's like a slide.

0:04:24 > 0:04:29If you were at the top of a slide, you would slide down to the bottom.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33But if you were at the bottom, you wouldn't slide uphill to the top.

0:04:33 > 0:04:34Just like a river.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38And some rivers have flat parts as well as downhill parts,

0:04:38 > 0:04:41but the water always flows in one direction.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43Here we have some pictures of rivers.

0:04:43 > 0:04:47And as you can see, some are straight and flat,

0:04:47 > 0:04:51some are hilly, and some are wiggly.

0:05:01 > 0:05:05The ground at the side of a river is called a riverbank.

0:05:05 > 0:05:09And you should always be with an adult when you're near a river,

0:05:09 > 0:05:12- and you shouldn't go too near to the edge.- Very wise, Nina.

0:05:12 > 0:05:17Rivers start as small streams high up in the hills and the mountains,

0:05:17 > 0:05:21and they flow downhill and join up with other streams and rivers.

0:05:21 > 0:05:27Rivers keep flowing on and on until they reach the sea or a lake.

0:05:27 > 0:05:31And rivers are part of nature, like mountains or trees.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34- So who wants to make a river? - ALL: Me!

0:05:38 > 0:05:43Here's our big hill, and it's made of sand and different sized stones.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46We're going to make a river using our watering cans.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49We're going to pour the water onto the big hill

0:05:49 > 0:05:52and watch what happens to the sand and stones.

0:05:52 > 0:05:53OK, let's get pouring.

0:05:59 > 0:06:02It's raining, it's pouring!

0:06:02 > 0:06:05What's the water doing to the sand?

0:06:05 > 0:06:09Look, Nina, the water is washing the sand down the hill.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13And did you see that some of the smaller stones

0:06:13 > 0:06:15were moved by the water, too?

0:06:15 > 0:06:18But what did the water do to the big stones?

0:06:20 > 0:06:24The water can't move the big stones, so it goes around them.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27But it can move the sand and some of the smaller stones.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30And this is what happens in a real river, too.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33They pick up small stones and move them.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36Sometimes just a little way, and sometimes a long way.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38Ooh!

0:06:38 > 0:06:44Now we're going to pretend that this glass of water is a river.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47And look, here's the sand at the bottom of the river.

0:06:47 > 0:06:52But because the water's not moving, the sand is just sitting there.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54But water moves in a river,

0:06:54 > 0:06:58so I'm going to give it a little stir to move the water.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02Whoo! What's happening?

0:07:02 > 0:07:07- The water's moving the sand. - That's right.

0:07:07 > 0:07:11The sand is being picked up by the moving water, just like in a river.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14We know that rivers flow in one direction.

0:07:14 > 0:07:19Sometimes rivers can carry stones or sand or mud with them in the water.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16You're right, Luke, water can be dangerous.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18Oh! It's going very fast, Nina.

0:10:07 > 0:10:11the little stones stop and drop to the bottom of the river.

0:10:18 > 0:10:23You asked why are rivers wiggly? And so far we've discovered that rivers

0:10:23 > 0:10:27flow in one direction, and they sometimes pick up sand and stones.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30We also found out that rivers go faster and slower

0:10:30 > 0:10:34at different times. But what makes the river wiggle?

0:10:34 > 0:10:37Well, we're here on a footbridge next to a real river.

0:10:40 > 0:10:45And we have our very own wiggly river in this tray of sand.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48So let's see if we can spot the sand moving

0:10:48 > 0:10:50when our river flows downhill.

0:11:09 > 0:11:14- Look, Explorers, what's happening here?- The water is moving the sand.

0:11:14 > 0:11:19Yeah. When it moves fast, like here, it picks up bits of sand.

0:11:19 > 0:11:24But when it moves slow, like at the edge here, it drops them.

0:11:24 > 0:11:26The moving water changes the shape of the river.

0:11:26 > 0:11:28Wiggle!

0:11:28 > 0:11:33Moving the sand and tiny stones is what changes the shape of the river.

0:11:33 > 0:11:37And you know, rivers are changing shape very slowly all the time.

0:11:37 > 0:11:38Even this one is right now.
