0:04:01 > 0:04:06The first thing we have to do is work out what happens when we jump.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09So let's jump up and down and see what we can discover.

0:04:27 > 0:04:31So we have to push very hard to launch ourselves off the ground.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33But how can we jump further?

0:04:33 > 0:04:37Well, let's look more closely at jumping, with this special machine.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44When I pull the spring back and let it go,

0:04:44 > 0:04:49the machine will launch the ball so it jumps into the air.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08And that means he can jump very far.

0:07:14 > 0:07:16In the long jump,

0:07:16 > 0:07:21athletes like Joseph jump as far as they can into a special sandpit.

0:07:21 > 0:07:25And their jump always starts from a white line on the track,

0:07:25 > 0:07:28like this one. And Joseph will help us work out

0:07:28 > 0:07:30how we can jump further.

0:07:30 > 0:07:32So, can I ask you to stand at the white line

0:07:32 > 0:07:35and when you're ready, jump as far as you can?

0:07:49 > 0:07:53In the long jump, athletes are allowed a run before they jump.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55So what do you think running before you jump

0:07:55 > 0:07:59- would do to the length of the jump? - Make it longer.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35and that's because he was already moving really quickly,

0:08:35 > 0:08:39which helped to push him up and forward, making his jump longer.

0:08:39 > 0:08:45I'd do a much longer run-up. That way, I'd jump even further.

0:08:45 > 0:08:47Oh, interesting idea, Bud.

0:08:47 > 0:08:52I wonder if taking a longer run-up would make your jump longer.

0:10:36 > 0:10:40you didn't have as much speed to push your body up and forward.
