0:00:58 > 0:01:01Oh, hello there. Just washing my hands.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03Listen to the sounds the water makes.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05WATER SPLASHES

0:01:05 > 0:01:10Oh! I hear a beep, I see a flash. I wonder what they're going to ask.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12BEEP! BEEP!

0:01:14 > 0:01:15BOTH: Hi, Nina.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18- Hi!- We've got a question for you.

0:01:18 > 0:01:22How do high divers make such a small splash?

0:01:22 > 0:01:23Great question!

0:01:23 > 0:01:26How do high divers make such a small splash?

0:01:26 > 0:01:29When divers jump from really high up,

0:01:29 > 0:01:32you'd think they'd make a big splash, but they don't.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35Why not come to my lab and we'll investigate?

0:01:35 > 0:01:37BOTH: See you soon, Nina! Bye!

0:01:37 > 0:01:39Bye!

0:01:39 > 0:01:41I'm going to need help to answer this

0:01:41 > 0:01:43and I know just who to ask.

0:01:43 > 0:01:45OK, Neurons - time to get to work.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03ALL: Neurons at the ready, Nina!

0:02:03 > 0:02:05OK - today's question is

0:02:05 > 0:02:08"How do high divers make such a small splash?"

0:02:08 > 0:02:12Which Neuron do you think will be most useful in helping us?

0:02:12 > 0:02:14- Me!- Me, me, me!- Me!

0:02:14 > 0:02:16Me!

0:02:16 > 0:02:18Will it be fabulous Felix?

0:02:18 > 0:02:22I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24Will it be beautiful Belle?

0:02:24 > 0:02:26I send messages to brain from ear.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30Will it be lovely Luke?

0:02:30 > 0:02:32For looking and seeing, day or night,

0:02:32 > 0:02:35I'll help you with your sense of sight.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37Will it be awesome Ollie?

0:02:37 > 0:02:39If it's pongy or whiffy, but you can't tell,

0:02:39 > 0:02:42my messages help your sense of smell.

0:02:42 > 0:02:43Or will it be Baby Bud?

0:02:43 > 0:02:46Sour, salty, bitter or sweet,

0:02:46 > 0:02:48I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat.

0:02:53 > 0:02:54It's Belle!

0:02:55 > 0:02:59CHANTING: Go, Belle! Go, Belle! Go, Belle! Go, Belle!

0:02:59 > 0:03:02Go, Belle! Go, Belle! Go, Belle!

0:03:02 > 0:03:05Brilliant! I'm all ears, Nina.

0:03:05 > 0:03:09Today's question is, "How do high divers make such a small splash?"

0:03:09 > 0:03:13Because splashes are something we hear, Belle will help us.

0:03:13 > 0:03:17But stand by, Neurons - I think I may need help from all of you.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21I need to get the lab ready before the experimenters arrive.

0:03:23 > 0:03:25Zak likes eating haggis.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27Murray loves going to school.

0:03:27 > 0:03:29Jumping in the water is fun.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32I love splashing in the pool.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34But they both want to know

0:03:34 > 0:03:36how do high divers make such a small splash?

0:03:36 > 0:03:40So today, for one day only, Murray and Zak become...

0:03:40 > 0:03:42The experimenters!

0:03:47 > 0:03:49- Hi, guys! - BOTH: Hi, Nina.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52Welcome to my lab and thanks for your question -

0:03:52 > 0:03:54how do high divers make such a small splash?

0:03:54 > 0:03:58To find out, let's start by using our senses.

0:03:58 > 0:04:02ALL: Whoop-whoo! A senses experiment! We're ready, Nina.

0:04:02 > 0:04:06First of all, let's take a look at a high diver in action.

0:04:06 > 0:04:07Oh, here they go...!

0:04:10 > 0:04:14- That was amazing, wasn't it? - Yes.- Yes.- Yeah!

0:04:14 > 0:04:17Did they make a big splash or a little splash?

0:04:17 > 0:04:18Little splash.

0:04:18 > 0:04:20That's right - only a little splash.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24That's what high divers try to do, because in competitions,

0:04:24 > 0:04:26they're scored on how good the dive is

0:04:26 > 0:04:28and the size of the splash.

0:04:28 > 0:04:33The smaller the splash, the better the score.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36So let's experiment by listening to some splashes.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39Brilliant! Time for me to get to work.

0:04:39 > 0:04:43OK, we are going to take turns to drop different things

0:04:43 > 0:04:45into this bowl of water.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49Zak, you go first. Why not drop in this lovely, shiny stone?

0:04:49 > 0:04:50SPLASH!

0:04:50 > 0:04:53Your turn, Murray. You've got a rubber.

0:04:53 > 0:04:54SPLASH!

0:04:54 > 0:04:55NINA LAUGHS

0:04:55 > 0:04:58Do you want to drop in that clip for me, Zak?

0:04:58 > 0:05:01- What kind of splash was that? - A little splash.

0:05:01 > 0:05:02- Go for it! - SPLASH!

0:05:02 > 0:05:06Oh! I love splashy sounds!

0:05:06 > 0:05:09What about the hockey puck? Watch and listen - go!

0:05:09 > 0:05:10SPLASH!

0:05:10 > 0:05:13- NINA LAUGHS - That was brilliant!

0:05:13 > 0:05:16It's amazing how many different splashing sounds we made.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20- All the splashes looked different too, didn't they?- Yes.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22When something is dropped into water,

0:05:22 > 0:05:25it pushes some of the water out of the way.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27That's what makes the splash.

0:05:27 > 0:05:31Why do you think all the different things made different splashes?

0:05:31 > 0:05:33Cos they're all different shapes.

0:05:33 > 0:05:37That's right - they were all different shapes and sizes.

0:05:37 > 0:05:41Maybe shape and size are important when people dive into water, too.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44Let's go somewhere with lots of water to find out.

0:05:48 > 0:05:52- BELLE:- Hm...where do you think we're going today?

0:05:52 > 0:05:55LUKE: Nina said it was somewhere with lots of water.

0:05:55 > 0:05:59- Maybe it's the beach. - Oh, no - that means grainy sand.

0:05:59 > 0:06:02And big, big ice creams! Yummy!

0:06:02 > 0:06:05OLLIE: Look, everyone - we're here!

0:06:06 > 0:06:11So we've come somewhere with lots of water - a swimming pool.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14We want to find out if shape and size are important

0:06:14 > 0:06:16when people dive into water.

0:06:16 > 0:06:18Let's get experimenting.

0:06:18 > 0:06:20We know that you both can swim,

0:06:20 > 0:06:25so we've come to this diving pool to get you to jump in.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27This is much deeper than a normal pool,

0:06:27 > 0:06:30so you won't hit the bottom when you jump in.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33Nina's right - you should always make sure

0:06:33 > 0:06:37you know a pool is deep enough before you jump in.

0:06:37 > 0:06:41And you should never jump into water without an adult to look after you.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44We also have our lovely lifeguard Scott here

0:06:44 > 0:06:47to make sure you're extra safe. Say hello to Scott.

0:06:47 > 0:06:48Hello!

0:06:48 > 0:06:52Right. Let's see what kind of splashes your bodies can make.

0:06:52 > 0:06:56Murray, I'd like you to jump in, keeping your arms out straight

0:06:56 > 0:07:01and your legs in a big, wide, stepping shape, OK?

0:07:01 > 0:07:05Zak, I want you to watch the splash carefully, OK?

0:07:06 > 0:07:08One, two, three. Jump!

0:07:08 > 0:07:10SPLASH!

0:07:10 > 0:07:12NINA LAUGHS

0:07:12 > 0:07:16- BELLE:- That was a huge splash!

0:07:16 > 0:07:19OLLIE: I hope they didn't get too much water up their nose.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22Zak, was that a big splash or a small splash?

0:07:22 > 0:07:26- A big splash.- Certainly was - we nearly got soaked!

0:07:26 > 0:07:31OK. This time, I want you to keep your body as straight as possible.

0:07:31 > 0:07:33Zak, I want you to watch the splash.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36Tell me if it's bigger or smaller than the last one.

0:07:36 > 0:07:39One, two, three. Jump!

0:07:41 > 0:07:43- SPLASH! - Oh!

0:07:43 > 0:07:44NINA LAUGHS

0:07:44 > 0:07:47- FELIX:- That certainly felt less splashy.

0:07:47 > 0:07:49Nina didn't get wet this time.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52- What did you think of that splash? - It was much smaller, Nina.

0:07:52 > 0:07:54Yes, it was, wasn't it?

0:07:54 > 0:07:58Let's swap you guys over. We'll try the experiment again

0:07:58 > 0:08:00and see if we get the same results.

0:08:02 > 0:08:05SPLASH!

0:08:05 > 0:08:06Jump!

0:08:06 > 0:08:07SPLASH!

0:08:08 > 0:08:12Brilliant, experimenters! We got the same result both times.

0:08:12 > 0:08:16So, keeping our bodies straight when we jump into water

0:08:16 > 0:08:18makes a smaller splash.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22Is this the same for a high diver, too? Hm...come with me.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27Have a look up there.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30Grace is going to do a high dive for us.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32I've set up this special camera

0:08:32 > 0:08:36so we can film the dive and see the splash.

0:08:36 > 0:08:40But I want you guys to listen out for the sound the splash makes.

0:08:40 > 0:08:43OK? OK, Grace. Off you go!

0:08:48 > 0:08:50SPLASH!

0:08:50 > 0:08:52Ho-ho!

0:08:52 > 0:08:55- Wow, that was amazing, wasn't it? - Yes!- Yes!

0:08:55 > 0:08:57And did you hear it?

0:08:57 > 0:08:59It wasn't much of a splash.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02Hm...let's take a closer look at it as well.

0:09:03 > 0:09:05Let's have a look here.

0:09:08 > 0:09:12You're right, experimenters. There was hardly any splash.

0:09:12 > 0:09:14Well done, Grace. Top marks!

0:09:14 > 0:09:18What do you notice about the shape of her body going into the water?

0:09:18 > 0:09:23- It's straight.- Yes, her body is very straight - like this.

0:09:23 > 0:09:27This makes less splash, like when you jumped into the pool earlier.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30Remember, it takes divers a long time to learn how to do this,

0:09:30 > 0:09:34so you should never try diving or jumping into water on your own.

0:09:34 > 0:09:39- LUKE:- Why is Grace holding her hands flat on the way into the water?

0:09:39 > 0:09:41Well spotted, Luke.

0:09:41 > 0:09:44Grace had her hands held flat in a special way.

0:09:44 > 0:09:48Maybe this has something to do with making a smaller splash.

0:09:48 > 0:09:50Let's go back for a final experiment.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56I've got two different blocks here.

0:09:56 > 0:09:58One is flat at the bottom,

0:09:58 > 0:10:01like the flat hands Grace used when she dived,

0:10:01 > 0:10:04and this one is pointy,

0:10:04 > 0:10:08like a diver pointing their hands down like this.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10The blocks are going to drop

0:10:10 > 0:10:13straight down into this tank of water

0:10:13 > 0:10:15and I want you guys to look carefully

0:10:15 > 0:10:19at the surface of the water - the very top of the water here -

0:10:19 > 0:10:23and watch what happens with each splash, OK?

0:10:23 > 0:10:24Hee-hee!

0:10:24 > 0:10:26We'll drop the pointy block first.

0:10:27 > 0:10:28Here we go.

0:10:30 > 0:10:32SPLASH!

0:10:32 > 0:10:35NINA LAUGHS

0:10:35 > 0:10:37- Yee-hah! - How splashy was that?

0:10:37 > 0:10:40- Really splashy.- It was! I think I need a towel.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43Let's drop the flat block now.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48- GLUG! - Ho-ho-ho!

0:10:48 > 0:10:50What about that splash?

0:10:50 > 0:10:52That was a smaller splash.

0:10:52 > 0:10:57It was. To find out why, let's have another look at it.

0:10:57 > 0:11:01I was filming those splashes with my special camera again.

0:11:01 > 0:11:02This way, boys.

0:11:04 > 0:11:06When something is dropped into water,

0:11:06 > 0:11:10it pushes some of the water up and out of the way, making a splash.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13So when the pointy block hit the water,

0:11:13 > 0:11:18lots of water escaped really easily up the sides of the pointy shape,

0:11:18 > 0:11:20making a BIG splash.

0:11:20 > 0:11:23But when our flat block was dropped into the water,

0:11:23 > 0:11:25it made a smaller splash

0:11:25 > 0:11:29because instead of letting the water escape up and out,

0:11:29 > 0:11:31it pushed the water down with it.

0:11:31 > 0:11:33High divers don't want to make a big splash

0:11:33 > 0:11:35because they lose points.

0:11:35 > 0:11:39So they don't use pointy hands - they use flat hands instead.

0:11:39 > 0:11:42That means they push the water down in front of them

0:11:42 > 0:11:44so it doesn't splash up.

0:11:49 > 0:11:53So, your question was, "How do high divers make such a small splash?"

0:11:53 > 0:11:55I think we've answered it.

0:11:55 > 0:11:58- BELLE:- Objects that are different shapes and sizes

0:11:58 > 0:12:01make different size splashes and different sounds.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04- LUKE:- By keeping their bodies really straight,

0:12:04 > 0:12:06high divers can make a smaller splash

0:12:06 > 0:12:08when diving into the water.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11FELIX: When something is dropped into water,

0:12:11 > 0:12:12it has to get out of the way.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15Most of the time, it splashes up.

0:12:15 > 0:12:19- OLLIE:- They hold their hands flat when diving to push the water down

0:12:19 > 0:12:20so it doesn't splash up.

0:12:20 > 0:12:23I hope that's answered your question.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26BOTH: Thanks, Nina. Bye!

0:12:26 > 0:12:27You're welcome. Bye!
