0:00:59 > 0:01:01Hello there. I am seeing how many times

0:01:01 > 0:01:03I can bounce this ball. Here we go.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06One, two, three, four...

0:01:06 > 0:01:08BEEP

0:01:08 > 0:01:12I hear a beep, I see a flash. I wonder what they're going to ask.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17- BOTH: Hi, Nina!- Hi.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19We've got a question for you.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21Why is a ball so bouncy?

0:01:21 > 0:01:23That's a great question.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25Why are balls so bouncy?

0:01:25 > 0:01:28Bouncing balls is great fun. But what makes them bounce?

0:01:28 > 0:01:32Why not come down to my lab and we'll investigate?

0:01:32 > 0:01:33BOTH: See you soon. Bye!

0:01:33 > 0:01:35Bye.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38Well, I'll need some help to answer this one.

0:01:38 > 0:01:42And I know just who to ask. OK, Neurons, time to get to work!

0:01:56 > 0:01:58ALL: Neurons at the ready, Nina.

0:01:58 > 0:02:02OK. Today's question is, why are balls so bouncy?

0:02:02 > 0:02:06Which Neuron will be most useful in helping us find the answer?

0:02:06 > 0:02:08ALL: Me!

0:02:08 > 0:02:11Will it be fabulous Felix?

0:02:11 > 0:02:15I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17Will it be beautiful Belle?

0:02:17 > 0:02:19I send messages from brain to ear.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22If there's a sound I'll help you hear.

0:02:22 > 0:02:23Will it be lovely Luke?

0:02:23 > 0:02:26For looking or seeing, day or night,

0:02:26 > 0:02:28I'll help you with your sense of sight.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30Will it be awesome Olly?

0:02:30 > 0:02:33If it's pongy or whiffy, but you can't tell,

0:02:33 > 0:02:35my messages help your sense of smell.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37Or will be baby Bud?

0:02:37 > 0:02:40Sour, salty, bitter or sweet,

0:02:40 > 0:02:43I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat.

0:02:47 > 0:02:48It's Luke!

0:02:48 > 0:02:50CHEERING

0:02:50 > 0:02:55ALL: Go, Luke, go, Luke, go, Luke, go, Luke, go, Luke.

0:02:55 > 0:02:56Go, Luke!

0:02:56 > 0:02:59Cool, Nina! I'll be looking out to help ya!

0:02:59 > 0:03:02Today's question is, why are balls so bouncy?

0:03:02 > 0:03:06As we can see a ball bounce, Luke, our sight Neuron,

0:03:06 > 0:03:07will help us.

0:03:07 > 0:03:11But stand by, Neurons, I have a feeling I may need help

0:03:11 > 0:03:13from all of you. I must get the lab ready

0:03:13 > 0:03:15before the experimenters arrive!

0:03:17 > 0:03:20Connor likes playing in the garden.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22Sarah-Louise likes dancing.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24Balls is fun.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27We like bouncing balls very high.

0:03:27 > 0:03:31But they both want to know, why are balls so bouncy?

0:03:31 > 0:03:34So, today, for one day only, Sarah-Louise and Connor

0:03:34 > 0:03:38become The Experimenters!

0:03:41 > 0:03:42Hi, guys!

0:03:42 > 0:03:44BOTH: Hi, Nina!

0:03:44 > 0:03:47Welcome to my lab and thank you for your great question,

0:03:47 > 0:03:49why are balls so bouncy?

0:03:49 > 0:03:52To find out the answer, let's start by using our senses.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55ALL: Whoop-whoo! A senses experiment.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57We're ready, Nina!

0:03:57 > 0:03:58We have some balls here.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01Let's give then a bounce and see what happens!

0:04:01 > 0:04:04Let's bounce!

0:04:05 > 0:04:06Yay!

0:04:06 > 0:04:09Oh, I love that bouncy noise!

0:04:09 > 0:04:11These balls are definitely bouncy.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13But they bounce so fast

0:04:13 > 0:04:16it's hard for us to see what happens.

0:04:16 > 0:04:18Let's look at a ball bouncing slowly.

0:04:18 > 0:04:20Look over here.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23A special camera has taken these pictures

0:04:23 > 0:04:26and then slowed them down so we can see what is going on.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29Wow! When you slow things down,

0:04:29 > 0:04:31you can see everything much better!

0:04:31 > 0:04:35Can you see what happens to the bottom of the ball

0:04:35 > 0:04:38- when it bumps onto the floor? - It goes flat.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41Yes, the ball gets squashed when it bumps onto the floor.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43But what happens next?

0:04:43 > 0:04:45Does the ball stay squashed?

0:04:45 > 0:04:48- No!- You're right. It only stays squashed for a moment.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51So after it has bumped onto the floor

0:04:51 > 0:04:52and been squashed,

0:04:52 > 0:04:54it goes back into shape -

0:04:54 > 0:04:55and it's this change of shape

0:04:55 > 0:04:58that is a clue to find out how a ball bounces.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01Let's take these balls back.

0:05:01 > 0:05:05We will try to squash these balls like this.

0:05:07 > 0:05:09Oh! It's quite hard.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11How are you getting on?

0:05:11 > 0:05:13It's really, really hard.

0:05:13 > 0:05:18It is! Does it feel like the ball is pushing back against us?

0:05:18 > 0:05:20- Yes!- That's exactly what's happening.

0:05:20 > 0:05:24When a ball bumps onto the floor, it's squashed at the bottom,

0:05:24 > 0:05:27then goes straight back into its round shape.

0:05:27 > 0:05:31As the ball goes back into shape, it pushes against the floor.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34It's this push that makes a ball bounce.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37So, when a ball bumps onto the ground,

0:05:37 > 0:05:39it gets squashed at the bottom.

0:05:39 > 0:05:43But the ball goes straight back into shape!

0:05:43 > 0:05:45Remember, Nina, we should be very careful

0:05:45 > 0:05:48if we bounce balls inside.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50You're right, Felix!

0:05:50 > 0:05:54Why do balls bounce better on the playground than the grass?

0:05:54 > 0:05:56Balls bounce better on the playground.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59Let's do another experiment to find out more.

0:05:59 > 0:06:03I know some expert ball bouncers who can help us.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07Where do you think we're going today?

0:06:07 > 0:06:09Maybe it's a playground.

0:06:09 > 0:06:14Nina said we'll meet people who are experts at bouncing balls.

0:06:14 > 0:06:15Then it has to be a playground!

0:06:15 > 0:06:17Look, we've arrived!

0:06:17 > 0:06:21This looks like a very different sort of playground.

0:06:21 > 0:06:26So we want to find out why balls bounce better in the playground

0:06:26 > 0:06:27than they do on grass.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30We've come to this basketball court to find out why.

0:06:30 > 0:06:32Basketball is a great sport

0:06:32 > 0:06:35and the players have to bounce the ball a lot.

0:06:41 > 0:06:45Yay! Hee-hee!

0:06:45 > 0:06:48Wow! Look at how they bounce the ball!

0:06:48 > 0:06:50That is really cool.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53This basketball court is hard, like a playground,

0:06:53 > 0:06:57and this mat is soft and spongy

0:06:57 > 0:06:58like grass.

0:06:58 > 0:07:00We will do an experiment to find out

0:07:00 > 0:07:03how balls bounce on each of them.

0:07:03 > 0:07:05You guys will drop the ball

0:07:05 > 0:07:08from the line onto the floor

0:07:08 > 0:07:11and we will measure how high they bounce.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13First, let's find out what happens

0:07:13 > 0:07:16when we drop a ball onto the hard floor.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19Connor, go for it.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22And...drop.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24It dropped about there.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26Let me just put a sticker on.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28There we go.

0:07:28 > 0:07:29And drop it.

0:07:29 > 0:07:31I think it bounced about there.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34Good dropping.

0:07:34 > 0:07:36I think it bounced up to about there.

0:07:36 > 0:07:40I think it came to about there.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42And...drop it!

0:07:42 > 0:07:44Oh, my goodness!

0:07:44 > 0:07:45It just came to there.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47Drop!

0:07:47 > 0:07:49Oh!

0:07:49 > 0:07:50Drop it!

0:07:50 > 0:07:54I'm sure it went to there that time.

0:07:55 > 0:07:56Drop it!

0:07:56 > 0:07:57Hee-hee-hee!

0:07:57 > 0:08:00It came to there.

0:08:00 > 0:08:01Super work.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04Well done, guys!

0:08:04 > 0:08:08Did the balls bounce higher on the hard floor

0:08:08 > 0:08:09or the soft floor?

0:08:09 > 0:08:10The hard floor.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13That's right. The balls bounced much higher

0:08:13 > 0:08:17when they were dropped onto the hard floor than the soft floor.

0:08:17 > 0:08:20The hard floor really squashes the ball.

0:08:20 > 0:08:21When it goes back into shape,

0:08:21 > 0:08:25it pushes against the hard floor and bounces really high.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28The soft floor doesn't squash the ball as much,

0:08:28 > 0:08:30so it can't bounce as much.

0:08:30 > 0:08:33The harder we squash a ball, the more it bounces.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36Let's see if the type of floor

0:08:36 > 0:08:39makes a difference for playing basketball.

0:08:39 > 0:08:41Our players will play some basketball

0:08:41 > 0:08:45on the soft mats for us. Let's go.

0:08:45 > 0:08:47- Hi, guys.- ALL: Hi.

0:08:47 > 0:08:53Can you start playing basketball on these soft mats, please?

0:08:53 > 0:08:55Oh!

0:08:59 > 0:09:03- Oh, no, what is happening? - The ball is not bouncing very well.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06You are right. This definitely proves

0:09:06 > 0:09:09you need a hard floor to play basketball on.

0:09:09 > 0:09:14That's because balls bounce higher on a hard floor, like a playground,

0:09:14 > 0:09:16than a soft floor, like grass.

0:09:16 > 0:09:20Some balls do not bounce as much as others.

0:09:20 > 0:09:22Do you think this ball will bounce?

0:09:22 > 0:09:23BOTH: No!

0:09:23 > 0:09:25Well, let's see.

0:09:25 > 0:09:27Ah, no.

0:09:27 > 0:09:29SHE LAUGHS

0:09:29 > 0:09:30Why does it not bounce?

0:09:30 > 0:09:32That is a very good question.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35Time for another experiment.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40There are lots of types of ball, made of lots

0:09:40 > 0:09:41of different things,

0:09:41 > 0:09:44but we will look at balls with air in them.

0:09:44 > 0:09:49Let's give these balls a bounce to make sure they're bouncy.

0:09:49 > 0:09:52Go for it! Down and catch.

0:09:52 > 0:09:54Good!

0:09:56 > 0:09:57Are they bouncy?

0:09:57 > 0:09:59Yes!

0:09:59 > 0:10:01We can't see the air inside them,

0:10:01 > 0:10:03but we can feel it. I'll show you.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05Put that one here.

0:10:05 > 0:10:06Thank you.

0:10:06 > 0:10:08Just open this bit up here.

0:10:08 > 0:10:11Can you hold your hands out for me, please?

0:10:11 > 0:10:14Can you feel the air from inside the ball?

0:10:14 > 0:10:16It feels like a balloon.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18I love that sound!

0:10:18 > 0:10:19SHE BLOWS

0:10:19 > 0:10:22That's tickling my cheek!

0:10:22 > 0:10:26Lots of balls have the inside them to help make them bouncy.

0:10:26 > 0:10:30The basketballs were filled with air, too, like these clear balls.

0:10:30 > 0:10:34What do you think will happen now we've let some air out of this ball?

0:10:34 > 0:10:36Will it still bounce?

0:10:36 > 0:10:37BOTH: No.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39Let's try.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41- Did it bounce?- BOTH: No.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43You're right.

0:10:43 > 0:10:47When the ball was full of air, it bounced really well.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50Now it has less air in it, it hardly bounces at all.

0:10:50 > 0:10:52Let's find out why.

0:10:52 > 0:10:54We can't see air,

0:10:54 > 0:10:56so I have filled these balls

0:10:56 > 0:10:59with little white beads and we will pretend

0:10:59 > 0:11:01the beads are air.

0:11:01 > 0:11:04This ball is full of our pretend air.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07This ball is only half-full.

0:11:07 > 0:11:11We know that the harder it is to squash a ball,

0:11:11 > 0:11:13the more it bounces.

0:11:13 > 0:11:17Let's give these a squash and see what happens.

0:11:17 > 0:11:19Try and give them a squash.

0:11:19 > 0:11:22That's it. Have a good feel and a good push.

0:11:22 > 0:11:24Oh!

0:11:24 > 0:11:28Hm. Which ball was harder to squash?

0:11:28 > 0:11:30The full ball.

0:11:30 > 0:11:32Yes, if you squash a full ball,

0:11:32 > 0:11:34it won't stay squashed

0:11:34 > 0:11:37because the air inside will push it back out

0:11:37 > 0:11:39and make the ball round again.

0:11:39 > 0:11:41That is why it is bouncy.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44But when you squash a half-full ball,

0:11:44 > 0:11:49it stays squashed because it doesn't have enough air inside it

0:11:49 > 0:11:52to push it back into shape so it can't bounce.

0:11:52 > 0:11:56# Nina and the Neurons! #

0:11:56 > 0:11:59Your question was,

0:11:59 > 0:12:02why are balls so bouncy? I think we have answered it.

0:12:02 > 0:12:04When a ball bumps to the ground,

0:12:04 > 0:12:06it gets squashed at the bottom.

0:12:06 > 0:12:09It pushes hard against the floor

0:12:09 > 0:12:12and goes back into shape, and that is what makes it bounce.

0:12:12 > 0:12:16Balls bounce much better on hard floors than soft floors.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19Lots of balls have air inside them

0:12:19 > 0:12:23and it is the air that pushes the ball back into shape,

0:12:23 > 0:12:25helping it to bounce

0:12:25 > 0:12:27and make that lovely bouncing sound!

0:12:27 > 0:12:30I hope that has answered your question.

0:12:30 > 0:12:32BOTH: Thanks, Nina, bye!

0:12:32 > 0:12:34Bye!

0:12:34 > 0:12:37If you want to know more about the science that is all around us,

0:12:37 > 0:12:41go to the Nina section on the CBeebies website. Have fun!

0:12:41 > 0:12:44ALL: On your marks, get set.
