0:00:56 > 0:00:59Round and round and round...

0:00:59 > 0:01:00Oh, hello there.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02Just playing with my new toy.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04It's a spinning top.

0:01:04 > 0:01:10The top spins around a pole that goes down through the middle. See?

0:01:10 > 0:01:12SHE LAUGHS

0:01:12 > 0:01:14- BEEPING - Oh, I hear a beep, I see a flash,

0:01:14 > 0:01:16I wonder what they're going to ask.

0:01:20 > 0:01:25- Hi, Nina.- Hi.- We've got a question for you.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27How can we spin and turn faster?

0:01:27 > 0:01:32That's a great question - how can we spin and turn faster?

0:01:32 > 0:01:35Spinning around when we're playing is great fun

0:01:35 > 0:01:37but how can we do it really fast?

0:01:37 > 0:01:40Why don't you come to my lab and investigate?

0:01:40 > 0:01:43See you soon, Nina, bye.

0:01:43 > 0:01:47Bye. Well, I'm going to need some help to answer this one

0:01:47 > 0:01:48and I know just who to ask.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50OK, Neurons, time to get to work!

0:02:05 > 0:02:08ALL: Neurons at the ready, Nina.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11OK. Today's question is -

0:02:11 > 0:02:13how can we spin and turn faster?

0:02:13 > 0:02:17Which Neuron will be most useful in helping us find the answer?

0:02:17 > 0:02:19ALL: Me! Me! Me! Oh, me!

0:02:19 > 0:02:22Will it be fabulous Felix?

0:02:22 > 0:02:26I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28Will it be beautiful Belle?

0:02:28 > 0:02:33I send messages to brain from ear. If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.

0:02:33 > 0:02:34Will it be lovely Luke?

0:02:34 > 0:02:37For looking and seeing, day or night,

0:02:37 > 0:02:39I'll help you with your sense of sight.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41Will it be awesome Ollie?

0:02:41 > 0:02:44If it's pongy or whiffy but you can't tell,

0:02:44 > 0:02:46my messages help your sense of smell.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48Or will it be baby Bud?

0:02:48 > 0:02:52Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat!

0:02:57 > 0:02:58It's Felix!

0:03:00 > 0:03:03CHANTING: Go, Felix! Go, Felix!

0:03:07 > 0:03:12Marvellous! A little touch can mean so much, Nina.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15Today's question is - how can we spin and turn faster?

0:03:15 > 0:03:18Because spinning is something we feel,

0:03:18 > 0:03:21Felix will be helping us but stand by, Neurons.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23I have a feeling I may need help from all of you.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27I need to get the lab ready before the experimenters arrive.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31James loves history.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34Amy likes playing games on her tablet.

0:03:34 > 0:03:35My dad was a gymnast.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38How do we spin and turn faster?

0:03:38 > 0:03:41But they both want to know - how can we spin and turn faster?

0:03:41 > 0:03:47So today, for one day only, Amy and James become the experimenters.

0:03:49 > 0:03:51- Hi, guys.- Hi, Nina.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54Welcome to my lab and thank you for your great question -

0:03:54 > 0:03:56how can we spin and turn faster?

0:03:56 > 0:04:00To find out the answer, let's start by using our senses.

0:04:00 > 0:04:04ALL: Whoop whoo! A senses experiment! We're ready, Nina!

0:04:04 > 0:04:07First, let's have a look at some sports

0:04:07 > 0:04:10that involve spinning, turning or rolling.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18Ooh! Look at those spins.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21Oh, they must have practised very hard to do that!

0:04:22 > 0:04:26Wow, those people were brilliant at spinning and turning.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29Let's have a look at some of the different ways

0:04:29 > 0:04:31that we can spin and turn.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34Can anyone here do a forward roll?

0:04:34 > 0:04:35Well, let's get rolling!

0:04:41 > 0:04:44Well done, that was brilliant, experimenters.

0:04:44 > 0:04:48Rolling forwards is just one of the ways that we can spin and turn

0:04:48 > 0:04:49so let's try another.

0:04:49 > 0:04:53How about standing up and spinning on the spot?

0:04:53 > 0:04:54Ready... Spin!

0:04:56 > 0:04:58NINA LAUGHS

0:05:01 > 0:05:05I think we should stop now, Nina. I'm feeling a bit dizzy.

0:05:05 > 0:05:10My goodness! And stop spinning!

0:05:10 > 0:05:11Now, spinning is fun

0:05:11 > 0:05:14but it does make you feel a bit dizzy, doesn't it?

0:05:14 > 0:05:17- Yes.- Let's have a look at these over here.

0:05:18 > 0:05:22These little models can help us understand something important

0:05:22 > 0:05:24about the spinning we were just doing.

0:05:24 > 0:05:28So, James, can you spin this figure forward for me?

0:05:28 > 0:05:33Just like when you did a forward roll. That's it. Whee!

0:05:33 > 0:05:37Brilliant. Let's give him one more round, go for it.

0:05:37 > 0:05:39Good spinning, James, thanks very much.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42Now look at the pole through its hips.

0:05:42 > 0:05:47- Do you see how the model is spinning and turning around the pole?- Yes.

0:05:47 > 0:05:51That's what we do, although we don't have a pole through our hips.

0:05:51 > 0:05:56When we do a forward roll, we spin around an invisible spin line.

0:05:56 > 0:06:01Oh! An invisible spin line. I like the sound of that.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03Let's look at this model.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06So this shows what happens when we spin on the spot.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08So, Amy, do you want to show us

0:06:08 > 0:06:11the spinning around that we were doing earlier? Ooh!

0:06:15 > 0:06:18- Where's the pole this time? - Down the middle.

0:06:18 > 0:06:22Yes, the pole goes right down the middle of the body

0:06:22 > 0:06:24and the model spins around it.

0:06:24 > 0:06:29And because this model spins in a different way to the first model,

0:06:29 > 0:06:32the spin line is in a different place.

0:06:32 > 0:06:36But we still don't know how we can spin and turn faster

0:06:36 > 0:06:39so let's go somewhere really bouncy to find out.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47Where do you think we're going today?

0:06:47 > 0:06:51- Nina said it was somewhere really bouncy.- Oh, oh!

0:06:51 > 0:06:56- Maybe it's a big bouncy castle! - Or a big bouncy bed.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58Look, everyone. We're here.

0:07:01 > 0:07:06- Here's something bouncy - a trampoline.- Yeah!

0:07:06 > 0:07:09So, you asked - how can we spin and turn faster?

0:07:09 > 0:07:13So far, we've discovered there are different ways of spinning,

0:07:13 > 0:07:16but we always spin around an invisible line.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20So we've come here to see Scott who's a trampolinist

0:07:20 > 0:07:22and he can spin in lots of different ways.

0:07:22 > 0:07:23Let's have a look.

0:07:23 > 0:07:27Doing somersaults on a trampoline can be dangerous.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29You should never try this at home.

0:07:31 > 0:07:36Oh, I love the springy sound of the trampoline.

0:07:36 > 0:07:38Boing, boing!

0:07:39 > 0:07:41CLAPPING

0:07:41 > 0:07:44That's amazing, Scott, thank you.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47- Trampolinists can spin in lots of ways, can't they?- Yes.

0:07:47 > 0:07:51Let's watch Scott do some special spins called somersaults.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58Ho ho, that is fast! I can hardly keep up.

0:07:59 > 0:08:01It is fast, Luke.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03These are called tuck somersaults

0:08:03 > 0:08:07because the arms and legs are tucked in.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09That's brilliant, Scott, thank you.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12Can you show us another type of somersault?

0:08:16 > 0:08:20- What's different about these somersaults?- They're straighter.

0:08:20 > 0:08:25Yes, the body shape is not tucked in, it's straighter.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27These are called lay-out somersaults

0:08:27 > 0:08:31because it looks like the person is laying out flat.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34Did you notice anything else about these somersaults?

0:08:34 > 0:08:36- They're slower. - They're much slower.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39So let's see both of the somersaults again.

0:08:41 > 0:08:45So the tuck is faster...

0:08:46 > 0:08:50..and the lay-out is slower.

0:08:50 > 0:08:51Thank you, Scott.

0:08:54 > 0:08:55Whoo!

0:08:57 > 0:09:00- FELIX:- So we've found out that the tucked-in somersault

0:09:00 > 0:09:04is quicker than the straight somersault. But why is that, Nina?

0:09:04 > 0:09:07That's a very good question, Felix.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09Let's do another experiment to find out.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15You're both sitting on special spinning disks

0:09:15 > 0:09:20and you'll each have two of these in your hands to give you extra weight.

0:09:20 > 0:09:22Now I'm going to spin you both round

0:09:22 > 0:09:26and first of all I want you to hold your arms out straight

0:09:26 > 0:09:29to either side like this and when I tell you,

0:09:29 > 0:09:32I want you to pull your arms in like this, OK?

0:09:32 > 0:09:35So there's your weights, and there are your weights.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37James, you're going to go first.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40Hold your arms out straight. That's good.

0:09:40 > 0:09:41Here we go!

0:09:44 > 0:09:47Hee hee! More spinning.

0:09:47 > 0:09:49I love this question.

0:09:49 > 0:09:51At least Nina's not doing it this time.

0:09:51 > 0:09:53And pull your arms in.

0:09:53 > 0:09:54Whoo!

0:09:59 > 0:10:03Fantastic, guys. So, what happened when you tucked your arms in?

0:10:03 > 0:10:05We went faster.

0:10:05 > 0:10:08Yes. What happened when your arms were out straight?

0:10:08 > 0:10:09You get slower.

0:10:09 > 0:10:11Yes. The reason that happened

0:10:11 > 0:10:15is to do with the invisible spin line you were spinning round.

0:10:15 > 0:10:17Come with me and find out more.

0:10:18 > 0:10:22So, when you were spinning, where do you think the spin line was?

0:10:22 > 0:10:26- Down the middle. - Yes, right down the middle.

0:10:27 > 0:10:29Down here.

0:10:29 > 0:10:33When your arms were straight, your body weight

0:10:33 > 0:10:36and the extra weight were further away

0:10:36 > 0:10:37from the invisible line

0:10:37 > 0:10:39and this makes you spin more slowly.

0:10:39 > 0:10:42But when you tucked your arms in to your bodies,

0:10:42 > 0:10:45your weight was all bunched up in the middle

0:10:45 > 0:10:48close to the spin line, and this makes you spin faster.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51- OLLIE:- So Scott's tuck somersault was faster

0:10:51 > 0:10:55because his body was all scrunched up and not spread out?

0:10:55 > 0:10:56Exactly, Ollie.

0:10:58 > 0:11:00The tuck somersault is faster

0:11:00 > 0:11:03because the body weight isn't spread out.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06It's all scrunched up close to the spin line.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09And that's how we can spin faster.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11- Would you like a go?- Yes, please!

0:11:17 > 0:11:22ALL: Whee!

0:11:22 > 0:11:23Aw, really good, guys.

0:11:27 > 0:11:30SHE LAUGHS

0:11:30 > 0:11:31Oh, that was great fun

0:11:31 > 0:11:36but I don't think I'm quite ready for somersaults yet.

0:11:43 > 0:11:46# Nina and the Neurons! #

0:11:47 > 0:11:51So, your question was - how can we spin and turn faster?

0:11:51 > 0:11:53And I think we've answered it.

0:11:53 > 0:11:58LUKE: We found out that we can spin and roll in lots of different ways,

0:11:58 > 0:12:02but we always spin around an invisible spin line.

0:12:02 > 0:12:06- BELLE:- If our body is stretched out, away from the invisible line,

0:12:06 > 0:12:08we will spin more slowly.

0:12:08 > 0:12:10OLLIE: But if we scrunch up our body,

0:12:10 > 0:12:14keeping our weight as close to the invisible line as possible...

0:12:14 > 0:12:17- BUD:- ..We can go faster, whee!

0:12:18 > 0:12:22- FELIX:- Although spinning can make us feel very dizzy.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25So don't try to spin too fast.

0:12:25 > 0:12:29- So, I hope that that's answered your question.- Thanks, Nina, bye.

0:12:29 > 0:12:30You're welcome, bye.

0:12:32 > 0:12:36If you want to know more about the science that's all around us,

0:12:36 > 0:12:39go to the Nina section of the CBeebies website. Have fun.

0:12:40 > 0:12:42On your marks, get set...
