0:00:57 > 0:01:00Up and up and up... Oh, hello there!

0:01:00 > 0:01:03I'm just helping my wee frog pal here get to the top.

0:01:03 > 0:01:09Just a few more tugs should do it. One, two, three, four. Yay!

0:01:09 > 0:01:11- We've done it! - BEEPS

0:01:11 > 0:01:16Oh, I hear a beep, I see a flash. I wonder what they're going to ask.

0:01:16 > 0:01:17Oh, sorry.

0:01:22 > 0:01:26- ALL: Hi, Nina. - Hi.

0:01:26 > 0:01:32- We've got a question for you. - How do we get better at climbing?

0:01:32 > 0:01:36That's a great question. How can I get better at climbing?

0:01:36 > 0:01:38Lots of people climb up things,

0:01:38 > 0:01:41like mountaineers going up huge mountains,

0:01:41 > 0:01:43but what makes them so good at it?

0:01:43 > 0:01:45Come down to my lab and investigate.

0:01:45 > 0:01:49- ALL: See you soon, Nina. Bye! - Bye!

0:01:49 > 0:01:53Well, I'm going to need some help to answer this one,

0:01:53 > 0:01:54and I know just who to ask.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56OK, Neurons, time to get to work!

0:02:12 > 0:02:14ALL: Neurons at the ready, Nina.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17Today's question is, "How can you get better at climbing?"

0:02:17 > 0:02:22Which Neuron do you think will be most useful in helping us?

0:02:22 > 0:02:25ALL: Me, me, me!

0:02:25 > 0:02:28Will it be...fabulous Felix?

0:02:28 > 0:02:31I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.

0:02:31 > 0:02:35- Will it be...beautiful Belle? - I send messages to brain from ear.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41- Will it be...lovely Luke? - For looking and seeing,

0:02:41 > 0:02:44day or night, I'll help you with your sense of sight!

0:02:44 > 0:02:46Will it be...awesome Ollie?

0:02:46 > 0:02:49If it's pongy or whiffy but you can't tell,

0:02:49 > 0:02:51my message is help your sense of smell.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54Or will it be baby Bud?

0:02:54 > 0:02:58Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05- It's Felix. - CHEERING

0:03:05 > 0:03:12ALL: Go, Felix! Go, Felix! Go, Felix!

0:03:12 > 0:03:16Marvellous. A little touch can mean so much, Nina.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19Today's question is, "How can we get better at climbing?"

0:03:19 > 0:03:23Because climbing is all about getting a grip and holding on,

0:03:23 > 0:03:26Felix, our touch Neuron, will help today.

0:03:26 > 0:03:27But stand by, Neurons,

0:03:27 > 0:03:31I have a feeling I may need help from all of you.

0:03:31 > 0:03:36Right, I need to get the lab ready before the experimenters arrive.

0:03:36 > 0:03:40Will likes beetroot. Sunny loves going to taekwondo.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42Evie loves solving puzzles.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44I love climbing.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46I like swinging on the frame.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49How can we get better at climbing?

0:03:49 > 0:03:52They want to know, "How can we get better at climbing?"

0:03:52 > 0:03:57Today, Will, Sunny and Evie become the experimenters!

0:04:02 > 0:04:05- Hi, guys! - ALL: Hi, Nina!

0:04:05 > 0:04:08Welcome to my lab and thank you for your great question,

0:04:08 > 0:04:11"How can we get better at climbing?"

0:04:11 > 0:04:14To find out the answer, let's start by using our senses.

0:04:14 > 0:04:18ALL: Woot-whoo! A senses experiment! We're ready, Nina.

0:04:18 > 0:04:22- Climbing's great fun, isn't it? - ALL: Yes.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25So let's have a look at some expert climbers.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29What parts of our bodies do we use to help us climb?

0:04:29 > 0:04:31Our arms and legs.

0:04:31 > 0:04:35That's right! We use our arms and our legs for climbing.

0:04:35 > 0:04:39Let's see if we can find out the BEST way to use them for climbing.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41It's time for an experiment.

0:04:42 > 0:04:46Now, experimenters, I know you're not cheeky monkeys, but I wonder

0:04:46 > 0:04:52if you can move like monkeys along these bars using just your arms.

0:04:52 > 0:04:53Ready, steady, go!

0:04:59 > 0:05:01Hey, hey, well done!

0:05:01 > 0:05:03OK, Will, off you go.

0:05:05 > 0:05:10That's it, you're doing really well. And drop down. Good lad, well done.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12OK, Sunny.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19Oh, it's hard. You're doing so well. And drop!

0:05:19 > 0:05:22- It looks very tricky, Nina. - It does, Felix.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25- So, how was that, experimenters?- It was hard.

0:05:25 > 0:05:29Yes, it was difficult to move along because your arms were

0:05:29 > 0:05:31holding the weight of your body.

0:05:31 > 0:05:33Let's try something different.

0:05:33 > 0:05:34Now, this time,

0:05:34 > 0:05:39I would like you guys to climb over these bars using just your legs.

0:05:39 > 0:05:40And off you go!

0:05:45 > 0:05:47Excellent, go for it.

0:05:49 > 0:05:50Wonderful!

0:05:53 > 0:05:55Excellent!

0:05:55 > 0:05:57That looks easy-breezy, Nina!

0:05:57 > 0:06:00- How was that, guys?- Much easier.

0:06:00 > 0:06:01It was, and that's

0:06:01 > 0:06:05because your legs were holding the weight of your body.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08Our legs hold the weight of our bodies every day,

0:06:08 > 0:06:10so they're very good at it,

0:06:10 > 0:06:13and they don't get tired in the same way as our arms do.

0:06:13 > 0:06:19OK, experimenters, let me see your muscles! Oh, my goodness!

0:06:19 > 0:06:21They look fantastic.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24Whoa! My muscles are huge!

0:06:24 > 0:06:27Now, let's try putting our hand around our arm muscles

0:06:27 > 0:06:30and give them a feel.

0:06:30 > 0:06:34Now, let's do the same thing to our leg muscles.

0:06:34 > 0:06:39At the top of our legs, these main ones here. Now, what do you notice?

0:06:39 > 0:06:41- Our leg muscles are bigger.- Yes!

0:06:41 > 0:06:44The muscles in our legs are much bigger

0:06:44 > 0:06:46and stronger than the muscles in our arms.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49And because our leg muscles are stronger,

0:06:49 > 0:06:53when we use them to climb, we can keep going for much longer.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56Nina, is there a way to move your legs to climb better?

0:06:56 > 0:07:01That's a great question, Felix. Let's get climbing to find out.

0:07:05 > 0:07:09Here we go! I can't wait to see where we'll end up today.

0:07:09 > 0:07:14I wonder if Nina's going to take us to the top of the mountain?

0:07:14 > 0:07:19- Cars can't drive to the top of a mountain.- Woo-hoo! We're here!

0:07:19 > 0:07:24- It's not a mountain, it's a big building.- Wow, look at this place!

0:07:24 > 0:07:30It's so cool! This is a special room that's been made just for climbing.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33It's got a very special soft floor that's safe to land on

0:07:33 > 0:07:36and that means the climbers don't need to use ropes.

0:07:36 > 0:07:39You should only climb in places that are safe

0:07:39 > 0:07:42and you should always have an adult with you.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45We've come here to meet a brilliant climber

0:07:45 > 0:07:47and there she is! Hi, Fran!

0:07:59 > 0:08:00Go, Fran!

0:08:00 > 0:08:03- You make climbing look easy!- Thanks.

0:08:03 > 0:08:05I'm a paraclimbing world champion.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07There's a competition for people

0:08:07 > 0:08:10whose arms and legs don't work normally.

0:08:10 > 0:08:12It doesn't keep me grounded.

0:08:12 > 0:08:13From our experiment,

0:08:13 > 0:08:16we found out it's easier to climb using our legs.

0:08:16 > 0:08:20But HOW do we use our legs to climb? Let's do an experiment.

0:08:20 > 0:08:22Fran climbs differently than we do,

0:08:22 > 0:08:25but she's a great expert to help us with this.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27- So, Fran, would you help us?- Yes.

0:08:27 > 0:08:31We'd like you to climb the wall and I'll shout, "freeze"

0:08:31 > 0:08:34and if you stop, we'll look at what you're doing.

0:08:34 > 0:08:36- Is that OK?- No problem.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39OK, experimenters, so which leg is Fran's weight on?

0:08:39 > 0:08:42The yellow leg or the red leg?

0:08:42 > 0:08:44Both legs, Nina.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47That's right, Will. It's actually both legs.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50On you go, Fran. Oh, freeze!

0:08:50 > 0:08:55- So, which leg is her weight on this time?- The red one.- Well done.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57Fran moved her weight onto her red leg

0:08:57 > 0:09:00so she could lift her yellow leg up.

0:09:00 > 0:09:05On you go, Fran. And freeze!

0:09:05 > 0:09:07- Yellow leg next.- Nice one, Felix.

0:09:07 > 0:09:10On you go, Fran. And freeze.

0:09:10 > 0:09:13Red leg now.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16OK, Fran, you can stop now. Thank you so much.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19So, you have to move your body weight to climb.

0:09:19 > 0:09:24And by moving your body weight from one leg to another, you can step up.

0:09:24 > 0:09:28Correct, Neurons. That's how you move and climb.

0:09:28 > 0:09:32- But, Nina, Fran was using her arms as well.- That's right, Felix.

0:09:32 > 0:09:34Fran was good at reaching far.

0:09:34 > 0:09:37Let's do an experiment to find out more.

0:09:52 > 0:09:54- Careful, Nina.- It's OK, Felix.

0:09:54 > 0:09:59Remember, we're in this special room with a very soft floor. Whoa!

0:09:59 > 0:10:01Aw, that was great fun!

0:10:01 > 0:10:04It was difficult to reach some of the holes

0:10:04 > 0:10:05with your hands, wasn't it?

0:10:05 > 0:10:09Sometimes we couldn't quite stretch far enough,

0:10:09 > 0:10:12so I wonder how we could reach out further to move on the wall.

0:10:12 > 0:10:14Let's do an experiment.

0:10:14 > 0:10:18One at a time, I want you to stand with your legs straight

0:10:18 > 0:10:21and your feet together, and show how far you can

0:10:21 > 0:10:26reach by drawing a line around you like this.

0:10:26 > 0:10:30And you'll all get a different colour, so here we go!

0:10:30 > 0:10:31Good stretching!

0:10:37 > 0:10:38Stretch!

0:10:39 > 0:10:40Ooh, a rainbow!

0:10:42 > 0:10:45So how did it feel when you were reaching?

0:10:45 > 0:10:47- A bit wobbly, Nina.- Oh, OK.

0:10:47 > 0:10:49Let's try it again, but this time you can

0:10:49 > 0:10:53have your feet much further apart and you can bend your knees.

0:10:53 > 0:10:55Go for it, Evie.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04Bend your knees, lean out!

0:11:05 > 0:11:08- So, did you feel wobbly that time? - ALL: No.

0:11:08 > 0:11:11Hmm. And could you reach further to the side

0:11:11 > 0:11:15- when your legs were straight or bent?- Bent legs.- Yes.

0:11:15 > 0:11:17And I can see that by here.

0:11:17 > 0:11:21Look, your rainbow is much wider when you could bend your knees.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24- Why is that, Nina? - That's a great question.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27Well, when your legs were together and straight,

0:11:27 > 0:11:30you were in an unstable position.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33That meant when you stretched, you were a bit wobbly

0:11:33 > 0:11:35and it felt like you might fall over,

0:11:35 > 0:11:37so you couldn't reach very far.

0:11:37 > 0:11:39But when your legs were further apart

0:11:39 > 0:11:43and you could bend your knees, that meant you could lean your

0:11:43 > 0:11:47body weight out the side without feeling wobbly or falling over.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49This helps us with our climbing

0:11:49 > 0:11:51because we can reach more hand holes,

0:11:51 > 0:11:54so we can keep climbing across and up the wall.

0:11:54 > 0:11:59# Nina and the Neurons. #

0:11:59 > 0:12:02So, your question was, "How can we get better at climbing?"

0:12:02 > 0:12:04And I think we've answered it.

0:12:04 > 0:12:08It is easier to use your legs to climb as they're used to

0:12:08 > 0:12:09holding your body weight.

0:12:09 > 0:12:13You move your body weight from one leg to another when climbing.

0:12:13 > 0:12:17You can reach further if you spread your feet apart.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20Everyone can find a way to climb, whatever their body.

0:12:20 > 0:12:25And remember, we should only climb when and where it's safe.

0:12:25 > 0:12:30- So, I hope that's answered your question.- ALL: Thanks, Nina. Bye!

0:12:30 > 0:12:33You're welcome. Bye!

0:12:33 > 0:12:37If you want to know more about the science that's all around us,

0:12:37 > 0:12:41go to the Nina section on the CBeebies website. Have fun!
