0:00:55 > 0:00:58Ooh, oh, hello there!

0:00:58 > 0:01:01I'm just building this jigsaw.

0:01:01 > 0:01:05There's so many different shapes and sizes to fit together.

0:01:05 > 0:01:09Oh, I'm nearly there now.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11Ohh...

0:01:11 > 0:01:14Ooh, hooray, it's finished!

0:01:14 > 0:01:17My very own ship, ha-ha! Oh...

0:01:18 > 0:01:20BEEPING

0:01:20 > 0:01:23I hear a beep, I see a flash, I wonder what they're going to ask.

0:01:23 > 0:01:24BEEPING

0:01:27 > 0:01:32- Hi Nina!- Hi, guys! - We've got a question for you.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35How do we build big ships?

0:01:35 > 0:01:38That's a great question - how do we build big ships?

0:01:38 > 0:01:42Shipbuilding take a lot of very clever engineering.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44Come down and we'll investigate.

0:01:44 > 0:01:48- See you soon, Nina! Bye!- Bye!

0:01:48 > 0:01:53I'll need help to answer this, and I know just who to ask.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56OK, Neurons, time to get to work.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14ALL: Neurons at the ready, Nina.

0:02:14 > 0:02:18OK. Today's question is, how do we build big ships?

0:02:18 > 0:02:22Which Neuron will be most useful to help find the answer?

0:02:22 > 0:02:25ALL: Me! Me! Me! Oh, me!

0:02:25 > 0:02:28Will it be fabulous Felix?

0:02:28 > 0:02:31I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33Will it be beautiful Belle?

0:02:33 > 0:02:38I send messages to brain from ear. If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40Will it be lovely Luke?

0:02:40 > 0:02:42For looking and seeing, day or night,

0:02:42 > 0:02:45I'll help you with your sense of sight.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47Will it be awesome Ollie?

0:02:47 > 0:02:50If it's pongy or whiffy but you can't tell,

0:02:50 > 0:02:54- my messages help your sense of smell. - Or will it be baby Bud?

0:02:54 > 0:02:58Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat!

0:03:01 > 0:03:03It's Felix!

0:03:03 > 0:03:05CHEERING

0:03:05 > 0:03:09ALL: Go, Felix! Go, Felix! Go, Felix!

0:03:12 > 0:03:16Marvellous! A little touch can mean so much, Nina.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19Today's question is, how do we build big ships?

0:03:19 > 0:03:23Shipbuilding requires hands-on making and shaping things,

0:03:23 > 0:03:26so Felix, our touch Neuron, will be helping us.

0:03:26 > 0:03:31But, Neurons, I have a feeling I may need help from all of you.

0:03:31 > 0:03:36I need to get the workshop ready before the engineers arrive.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38Rachel loves eating jelly snakes.

0:03:38 > 0:03:42Emmie likes splashing in puddles. Lawa likes dancing.

0:03:42 > 0:03:47- I really like big ships. - I've been on a ship.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50How are big ships made?

0:03:50 > 0:03:53Today, for one day only, they become the engineers!

0:03:58 > 0:04:01- Hi, guys!- Hi, Nina!

0:04:01 > 0:04:05Welcome to my workshop and thanks for your question.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07How do we build big ships?

0:04:07 > 0:04:10To find out, let's start by using our senses.

0:04:10 > 0:04:15ALL: Whoop! Woo! A senses experiment! We're ready, Nina.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18Why do you think really big ships are useful?

0:04:18 > 0:04:20We can put lots of things on them.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24That's right! Big ships can carry lots of things,

0:04:24 > 0:04:28and also, lots of people. But how do we build them?

0:04:28 > 0:04:32Engineers that build ships are called shipbuilders.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35They had to work out what to make ships out of.

0:04:35 > 0:04:37Let's try some of these.

0:04:37 > 0:04:42This is paper. There's some metal. And some rubber.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45The materials don't look very ship-shape, Nina.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48Well spotted, Luke! Let's try shaping them into ships.

0:04:48 > 0:04:52OK, Rachel, up you come first. We'll do the paper.

0:04:52 > 0:04:54I'll just pop it in there.

0:04:55 > 0:05:00And push it down! That should do it. Open it up.

0:05:00 > 0:05:01Ooh!

0:05:01 > 0:05:04We have a paper ship!

0:05:04 > 0:05:08OK, now, let's try the next one. We have some metal.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11We'll pop it in there.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15And push it down! That should do it!

0:05:15 > 0:05:18Now, open it up! Oh! Lovely!

0:05:18 > 0:05:21We now have paper and metal ships.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24Now, what about the rubber?

0:05:25 > 0:05:29And squash it down, and open it up!

0:05:29 > 0:05:31Oh...

0:05:31 > 0:05:35Oh, dear! The rubber stayed flat!

0:05:35 > 0:05:38We can't change the shape of rubber very easily.

0:05:38 > 0:05:42It springs back, so it would be hard to make a big ship out of rubber.

0:05:42 > 0:05:47Ships also need to be very strong, so let's see which of these -

0:05:47 > 0:05:50the paper or the metal ship - would be best.

0:05:50 > 0:05:55I've got some Mini-Ninas to help us. Let's play sailing!

0:06:08 > 0:06:10OK, guys, stop there.

0:06:10 > 0:06:16Oh, dear. The paper wasn't strong enough. It's lost its shape.

0:06:16 > 0:06:20So paper wouldn't be a good thing to make ships out of.

0:06:20 > 0:06:24But metal is stronger than paper, and it's kept its shape.

0:06:24 > 0:06:28That's why engineers use metal to make lots of things,

0:06:28 > 0:06:32like cars, trains and big ships!

0:06:32 > 0:06:35Big special ships require big special places,

0:06:35 > 0:06:38and that's where we're off to now. Let's go!

0:06:43 > 0:06:47- I wonder where Nina is taking us. - Nina said it's a big, special place.

0:06:47 > 0:06:51The cinema! That's special, cos you get popcorn!

0:06:51 > 0:06:56No cinema, but it does look big and special.

0:06:56 > 0:07:01This is where they make really big ships. Let's get investigating!

0:07:07 > 0:07:10Everything is so big here.

0:07:11 > 0:07:16This shipyard makes huge ships, and all made out of metal.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19This machine is shaping the flat metal sheets.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26That was a flat piece of metal before.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31Why is that man looking at a picture?

0:07:31 > 0:07:36Shipbuilders need a picture of what the ship's going to look like

0:07:36 > 0:07:39as they're building it. It shows them the sizes and tells them

0:07:39 > 0:07:45where each part of the ship goes. It's a bit like a big jigsaw puzzle.

0:07:45 > 0:07:48But that metal doesn't look like a ship, Nina.

0:07:49 > 0:07:53You're right, Luke! Come on! We need to find something that's ship-shape!

0:07:53 > 0:07:56Wow, that is massive!

0:07:56 > 0:07:58Absolutely magnificent!

0:07:58 > 0:08:02They're building the part of the ship that people live in.

0:08:02 > 0:08:09It's huge, isn't it? But it's only a small part of the whole ship.

0:08:09 > 0:08:13The part we're looking at will fit here on the ship.

0:08:13 > 0:08:17Why are they just making that bit of the ship?

0:08:17 > 0:08:20Good question! Let's investigate!

0:08:21 > 0:08:24Big ships are made in parts,

0:08:24 > 0:08:28and I've got a fun experiment that will explain why!

0:08:28 > 0:08:32These are knitting needles, and you can knit with them like this.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35And you can also make a big woolly jumper.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38Ha-ha!

0:08:38 > 0:08:41These are giant knitting needles!

0:08:41 > 0:08:46Do you think it will be easy to knit a big quilt for your bed with these?

0:08:46 > 0:08:48I'm not sure. They're very big.

0:08:48 > 0:08:52Let's have a go and see if we can make a huge quilt.

0:08:56 > 0:09:00They're getting in a bit of a tangle! Ha-ha!

0:09:03 > 0:09:07Stop there! Oh!

0:09:07 > 0:09:10Do you think it might be easier to knit smaller pieces

0:09:10 > 0:09:16- and then join them all together into one big quilt, like this?- ALL: Yes!

0:09:16 > 0:09:22Ho-ho! Ho-ho-ho! And it's the same for shipbuilding.

0:09:22 > 0:09:26Ships are so huge that it's much easier to make them in parts

0:09:26 > 0:09:31- and then join them together.- How are the ship parts joined together?

0:09:31 > 0:09:34Brilliant question! Come with me and we'll find out.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41Wow! What's he doing?

0:09:42 > 0:09:45Let's go back to my workshop and I'll show you.

0:09:47 > 0:09:51Your question was, how do we build big ships?

0:09:51 > 0:09:54We've discovered it's easier to build them in parts

0:09:54 > 0:09:58and then join them together later, like we just saw.

0:09:58 > 0:10:02But how are the ship parts joined together? Let's investigate!

0:10:02 > 0:10:05We're going to copy this picture

0:10:05 > 0:10:09and make our very own special ship, out of chocolate!

0:10:09 > 0:10:12A chocolate ship! Ye-e-e-e-s!

0:10:12 > 0:10:16When the metal parts of the ship are joined together,

0:10:16 > 0:10:20it's called welding. That's what we saw earlier.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23To weld things together, we need to heat up the edges

0:10:23 > 0:10:26so they start to melt and become a sticky liquid.

0:10:26 > 0:10:31- What do we need to weld our chocolate ship?- Heat.

0:10:31 > 0:10:35And we're going to use this bottle. It has hot water in it.

0:10:35 > 0:10:40Remember, it's important not to touch hot water, or it could burn you.

0:10:40 > 0:10:44OK, Rachel, you can get us started.

0:10:44 > 0:10:49OK, ohhh! Ohh!

0:10:49 > 0:10:52The edges are getting nice and sticky now.

0:10:52 > 0:10:55So if you press them together, Rachel,

0:10:55 > 0:10:59and pop them into your stand to cool down...

0:10:59 > 0:11:01Excellent!

0:11:29 > 0:11:32Maybe Nina will nibble the ship's deck!

0:11:32 > 0:11:34ALL LAUGH

0:11:34 > 0:11:37Welding is really clever engineering.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40Heating the edges makes them melt and go sticky

0:11:40 > 0:11:44and when you hold the sticky edges together and let them cool,

0:11:44 > 0:11:47they'll join up and stay together.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50Metal for ships is joined up in exactly the same way,

0:11:50 > 0:11:52but with a lot more heat.

0:11:52 > 0:11:57# Nina and the Neurons! #

0:11:57 > 0:12:00Your question was, how do we build big ships?

0:12:00 > 0:12:02I think we've answered it.

0:12:02 > 0:12:06We discovered that engineers use metal to make ships

0:12:06 > 0:12:10because they can change its shape and it's very strong.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13The easiest and quickest way to build a big ship

0:12:13 > 0:12:17is to make the parts on their own and then join them by welding,

0:12:17 > 0:12:21just like we did with our chocolate ship.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24I hope that's answered your question.

0:12:24 > 0:12:26Thanks, Nina, bye!

0:12:26 > 0:12:28You're welcome, bye!

0:12:31 > 0:12:35If you want to know more about the science and engineering around us,

0:12:35 > 0:12:39go to the Nina section on the CBeebies website. Have fun!

0:13:34 > 0:13:38# When you want to build go engineering

0:13:38 > 0:13:40# Go engineering! #

0:13:40 > 0:13:44Ah, it's been such a great day!

0:13:44 > 0:13:46The shipyard looked amazing!

0:13:46 > 0:13:49It's been a marvellous day.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52The big quilt was absolutely fabulous.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55I really enjoyed myself today.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58All those warm chocolatey smells!

0:13:58 > 0:14:00Engineers help to build the world around us.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03They make things work and use science to solve problems.

0:14:03 > 0:14:08- See you soon, bye! - ALL: Bye!
