0:01:15 > 0:01:19I hear a beep, I see a flash. I wonder what they're going to ask.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27Hi, Nina!

0:01:27 > 0:01:29Hello there.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31I have a question for you.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34What makes my bed so bouncy?

0:01:34 > 0:01:36Oh, that's a great question.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38What makes my bed so bouncy?

0:01:38 > 0:01:41A bouncy bed is a really useful invention.

0:01:41 > 0:01:43But what makes a bed bouncy?

0:01:43 > 0:01:47Why don't you come to my workshop and we'll check it out?

0:01:47 > 0:01:51Bye, Nina! See you soon!

0:01:51 > 0:01:52Bye.

0:01:52 > 0:01:57I'll need some help to answer this one, and I know just who to ask.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00OK, Neurons, time to get to work.

0:02:16 > 0:02:18Neurons at the ready, Nina!

0:02:19 > 0:02:24OK. Today's question is what makes my bed so bouncy?

0:02:24 > 0:02:27Which Neuron would be most useful to find the answer?

0:02:27 > 0:02:30ALL: Me! Me! Me! Me! Me!

0:02:30 > 0:02:33Will it be fabulous Felix?

0:02:33 > 0:02:37I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40Will it be...beautiful Belle?

0:02:40 > 0:02:42I send messages to brain from ear.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46- If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.- Will it be lovely Luke?

0:02:46 > 0:02:48For looking or seeing, day or night,

0:02:48 > 0:02:52- I'll help you with your sense of sight.- Will it be awesome Ollie?

0:02:52 > 0:02:55If it's pongy or whiffy, but you can't tell,

0:02:55 > 0:02:59- my messages help your sense of smell. - Will it be baby Bud?

0:02:59 > 0:03:04Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06ELECTRONIC BEEPING

0:03:08 > 0:03:09It's Felix!

0:03:09 > 0:03:11- Oh!- Go, Felix!

0:03:11 > 0:03:14Go, Felix! Go, Felix!

0:03:14 > 0:03:16Go, Felix! Go, Felix! Go, Felix!

0:03:16 > 0:03:22- Go, Felix!- Marvellous. A little touch can mean so much, Nina.

0:03:22 > 0:03:23Thanks, Felix.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26Today's question is what makes my bed so bouncy?

0:03:26 > 0:03:31Felix will be helping, because he can FEEL how bouncy something is.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33But stand by, I may need help from all of you.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37I need to get the workshop ready before the Inventors arrive.

0:03:40 > 0:03:44Elouise, Bethany and Zoe want to find out about bouncy beds,

0:03:44 > 0:03:48beds that are comfy, or springy, cosy and sinky-inny.

0:03:48 > 0:03:49So, today, for one day only,

0:03:49 > 0:03:53Elouise, Bethany and Zoe become the Inventors.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59- Hi, guys!- Hi, Nina.

0:03:59 > 0:04:04Come on in. Welcome to my workshop. It's lovely to see you.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07Your question is, "What makes my bed so bouncy?"

0:04:07 > 0:04:12- So, why do you want to know that? - I love my bouncy, comfy bed

0:04:12 > 0:04:15and I just want to know what makes it so bouncy.

0:04:15 > 0:04:19Oh, well, on our beds we have mattresses.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22So, let's find out if it's the mattress that's bouncy

0:04:22 > 0:04:27and there's a mattress over here. Let's gently kneel down

0:04:27 > 0:04:30onto the mattress...Oh!

0:04:30 > 0:04:32And let's see if the mattress is bouncy.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35THEY GIGGLE

0:04:35 > 0:04:40- The mattress is definitely bouncy. - Bouncing is a fabulous feeling

0:04:40 > 0:04:43because it makes you feel as light as air.

0:04:43 > 0:04:45Whoo! Ah! Whoo-hoo!

0:04:45 > 0:04:50If mattresses weren't bouncy, they wouldn't be very comfortable.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53But we really shouldn't bounce on our beds. Sorry, guys.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55I think we should stand up now.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57Oh!

0:04:57 > 0:05:01So, we know that mattresses are bouncy, but why?

0:05:01 > 0:05:04Let's get inside and have a closer look. Follow me.

0:05:06 > 0:05:08Now, taking things apart is my job.

0:05:08 > 0:05:13- It can be dangerous, so don't do this yourself.- That's right.

0:05:13 > 0:05:15Nina's been specially trained.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18There are lots of sharp bits inside that could harm you.

0:05:18 > 0:05:21This is what the inside of a mattress looks like.

0:05:21 > 0:05:27- There are loads of springs. - Yeah, big springs.

0:05:27 > 0:05:29Now, let me have a look with my Nina-Cam.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32Whoo! Whoo!

0:05:32 > 0:05:36Would you like a closer look at that, guys?

0:05:36 > 0:05:39Just be careful, it's got a little jaggy end.

0:05:39 > 0:05:41- It's very springy.- That's right.

0:05:42 > 0:05:47- You can make it smaller, but it'll just spring back again.- Exactly.

0:05:47 > 0:05:51It's this springiness that makes beds so comfortable to lie in.

0:05:51 > 0:05:55The springs let us land softly on a mattress when we lie down.

0:05:55 > 0:06:00Imagine lying down on a hard stony floor at bedtime

0:06:00 > 0:06:04instead of a lovely, bouncy bed. Oh!

0:06:04 > 0:06:07But it's not just us that need to land softly.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10Something very big and very exciting needs to land softly too.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13- Shall we go and see another invention?- Yeah!

0:06:13 > 0:06:15OK. Let's go.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24Oh! I wonder where we're going today.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27I love seeing the big inventions.

0:06:27 > 0:06:32BELLE: Um... Something big that needs to land softly.

0:06:32 > 0:06:36I just haven't got a clue what that could be.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38- OLLIE:- Well, I think we're about to find out.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40Looks like we've arrived.

0:06:42 > 0:06:44ENGINE WHIRRS

0:06:46 > 0:06:47Oh!

0:06:51 > 0:06:55This truck is called a monster truck and you can see why.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57It's not like any other truck.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01Look at those wheels, they're enormous.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06Is it going to drive over those cars?

0:07:07 > 0:07:08I think it is!

0:07:08 > 0:07:11There it goes.

0:07:16 > 0:07:18THEY GIGGLE

0:07:20 > 0:07:21Wow!

0:07:23 > 0:07:26The cars are getting all squashed.

0:07:26 > 0:07:27Oh, oh!

0:07:27 > 0:07:29Look at the way the monster truck

0:07:29 > 0:07:32bounces when it drops back down the other side.

0:07:32 > 0:07:34Wow!

0:07:34 > 0:07:38So something as huge and monstrous as a monster truck

0:07:38 > 0:07:40can be bouncy too. Let's go and look.

0:07:44 > 0:07:48- I can see springs.- They're bigger than the springs on my mattress.

0:07:48 > 0:07:52They certainly are. These springs help the truck to bounce.

0:07:52 > 0:07:54But what makes springs so bouncy?

0:07:54 > 0:07:59Come on, Inventors, let's go back to the workshop and get inventing!

0:08:01 > 0:08:04It's good that mattresses are so bouncy,

0:08:04 > 0:08:08but who invented the springy mattress?

0:08:08 > 0:08:11Oh, oh! I know that.

0:08:11 > 0:08:15Mattresses have been around for a long, long time.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19But unfortunately, they were not very comfortable.

0:08:20 > 0:08:22Look at him - tossing and turning.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24His mattress is made from straw.

0:08:26 > 0:08:30That man trying to get to sleep is Heinrich Westfal.

0:08:30 > 0:08:34One night, many years ago, he had an idea.

0:08:35 > 0:08:39If he put bouncy springs into his mattress instead of straw

0:08:39 > 0:08:42it may make it super comfy and very bouncy.

0:08:42 > 0:08:46Next thing he knew, he was fast asleep

0:08:46 > 0:08:50and never had an uncomfy sleep ever again. Lovely.

0:08:52 > 0:08:56So, your question was, "What makes my bed so bouncy?"

0:08:56 > 0:09:00We've found out that beds are bouncy because they have springs in.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03But what makes a spring so springy?

0:09:03 > 0:09:06Well, I think we need to get inventing to find out.

0:09:06 > 0:09:11So, the first thing we need to do is cut out our special shapes.

0:09:16 > 0:09:20Next, we're going to stick down one of our shapes.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23Put glue on the back and stick it on the cardboard.

0:09:24 > 0:09:25Glue it on.

0:09:25 > 0:09:27Good, smoothing it down.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32Now, let's cut it out.

0:09:33 > 0:09:38Be very careful when you're using scissors, they can be sharp.

0:09:38 > 0:09:41There we go. Next, we're making our springs.

0:09:41 > 0:09:43Take a strip of each colour

0:09:43 > 0:09:46and hold it like that.

0:09:46 > 0:09:50I'm going to take a piece of sticky tape to hold it together.

0:09:52 > 0:09:54There we go.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57Then, take the strip that's underneath

0:09:57 > 0:09:59and fold it over.

0:10:01 > 0:10:05Then, take the other strip and fold it that way

0:10:05 > 0:10:06and keep doing that,

0:10:06 > 0:10:10and you're still keeping that nice, straight edge.

0:10:12 > 0:10:13That's great.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23Let's have a closer look at this springy thing.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26If I press it down...

0:10:26 > 0:10:27it goes down like that...

0:10:27 > 0:10:30and if I let it go... Whoo!

0:10:30 > 0:10:33..it goes back up again. The reason it's springy

0:10:33 > 0:10:37is because it wants to get back to the shape it was in.

0:10:37 > 0:10:41To do that, it has to... push back upwards.

0:10:41 > 0:10:46So, let's use our springy springs in our mattress. Let's get sticking!

0:10:51 > 0:10:53Give it a good squash down.

0:10:53 > 0:10:58It's sticky! But it's great fun.

0:11:00 > 0:11:05So, now we need to take the top of our mattress, the yellow bit,

0:11:05 > 0:11:09and let's cover it in glue because then we can stick in on top

0:11:09 > 0:11:10and hold it down.

0:11:13 > 0:11:15Oh! So, well done, Inventors.

0:11:15 > 0:11:19We've made our very own mattresses but they look a bit bare.

0:11:19 > 0:11:23Why doesn't everyone take a duvet cover?

0:11:23 > 0:11:25That's brilliant.

0:11:25 > 0:11:28It's going to have to be somebody's bed now.

0:11:28 > 0:11:32So, is there anyone lying around here that might need a bed?

0:11:32 > 0:11:35Little Ted. Aw!

0:11:35 > 0:11:37Let's pop him in bed. There you go.

0:11:37 > 0:11:41You can put your favourite doll or action figure in.

0:11:41 > 0:11:45They'd have a lovely night's sleep in a beautiful bouncy bed.

0:11:48 > 0:11:51Your question was, "What makes my bed so bouncy?"

0:11:51 > 0:11:55We've answered it. We've found out most mattresses

0:11:55 > 0:11:59are bouncy because they have springs in them, which are bouncy

0:11:59 > 0:12:03because when you stretch them and squash them together

0:12:03 > 0:12:06they always want to go back to their shape.

0:12:06 > 0:12:10When you roll around in your mattress, you push the springs down

0:12:10 > 0:12:15and the springs push back up again. That's why mattresses are so bouncy.

0:12:15 > 0:12:20- Thanks for your brilliant question. - Thanks, Nina! Bye.

0:12:20 > 0:12:21Bye.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29If you want to make today's invention,

0:12:29 > 0:12:32just go to the Nina section on the CBeebies website.

0:12:32 > 0:12:36That gives you instructions you need to make your own,

0:12:36 > 0:12:39or you may have other ideas of what to invent.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42- Bikes!- Cranes!- Binoculars.

0:12:42 > 0:12:43- Television.- Speakers.

0:12:43 > 0:12:45And cars!

0:12:45 > 0:12:48# We all love inventing

0:12:48 > 0:12:51# Whoo-oh-oh-oh-oh Go inventing!

0:12:51 > 0:12:53# We all love inventing

0:12:53 > 0:12:56# Why don't you try it too?

0:12:57 > 0:12:59# Inventions make life easier

0:12:59 > 0:13:01# And help us get things done

0:13:01 > 0:13:03# Go inventing!

0:13:03 > 0:13:06# I always like to take a look

0:13:06 > 0:13:08# At how they work and run

0:13:08 > 0:13:09# Go inventing

0:13:09 > 0:13:11# We all love inventing

0:13:11 > 0:13:15# Whoo-oh-oh-oh-oh Go inventing!

0:13:15 > 0:13:17# We all love inventing

0:13:18 > 0:13:20# Why don't you try it too? #

0:13:21 > 0:13:23I've had a fabby day.

0:13:23 > 0:13:28I liked all the boinging bouncing on the beds best,

0:13:28 > 0:13:33- although Nina said you shouldn't do that.- I really enjoyed myself,

0:13:33 > 0:13:37especially when we saw what the inside of a mattress looks like.

0:13:37 > 0:13:42- It's really springy. - It's been such a great day, man.

0:13:42 > 0:13:45We saw some mean-looking monsters.

0:13:45 > 0:13:48Well, monster trucks. Ha ha!

0:13:49 > 0:13:51It's been a marvellous day.

0:13:51 > 0:13:56I enjoyed watching the Inventors make those paper springs.

0:13:56 > 0:13:59They made the mattress so comfortable.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03Our day's been bursting with inventions.

0:14:03 > 0:14:05Hope you enjoyed it, bye.

0:14:05 > 0:14:07ALL: Bye!

0:14:07 > 0:14:08Go inventing!
