0:03:07 > 0:03:11Go Luke! Go Luke! Go Luke!

0:03:11 > 0:03:15Cool, Nina. I'll be lookin' out to help ya!

0:03:15 > 0:03:18Today's question is How Does A Dishwasher Work?

0:03:18 > 0:03:22Because we see clean dishes come out of a dishwasher,

0:03:22 > 0:03:25Luke will help today, but stand by, Neurons,

0:03:25 > 0:03:26I may need you all.

0:03:26 > 0:03:30I need to get the workshop ready before the inventors arrive.

0:03:31 > 0:03:36Nicole, Casey and Rea want to find out all about dishwashers.

0:03:36 > 0:03:40A yucky plate, a dirty cup, how does the dishwasher clean them up?

0:03:40 > 0:03:45So today, for one day only, Nicole, Casey and Rea become The Inventors!

0:03:48 > 0:03:50Hi, guys!

0:03:50 > 0:03:51Hi, Nina!

0:03:51 > 0:03:54Welcome to my workshop. Thanks for coming down.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58Your question was How Does A Dishwasher Work? Why?

0:03:58 > 0:04:01Dishes go into a dishwasher very dirty.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03But come out really clean.

0:04:03 > 0:04:07They're clever, aren't they? Can you hear that sound?

0:04:07 > 0:04:09- SLOSHING - Sounds like a dishwasher.

0:04:09 > 0:04:13Yes! And it's making some really strange noises,

0:04:13 > 0:04:15so let's go and have a listen.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17Oh, that is a funny sound,

0:04:17 > 0:04:21it's like a sloshing, splashing, scooshing noise.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23Ah, can you hear that?

0:04:23 > 0:04:25Something sloshing about, Nina.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28There's a sloshing noise inside.

0:04:28 > 0:04:32We know the dishwasher's doing something but can't see what.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35- BEEP - Oh, I think that's the dishwasher finished!

0:04:35 > 0:04:37Let's just open it up.

0:04:38 > 0:04:39Oh!

0:04:40 > 0:04:43Hey, my teapot's nice and clean!

0:04:43 > 0:04:45Those beakers are sparkling.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49And they smell really nice, too.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52Mmm, a bit soapy and very fresh.

0:04:52 > 0:04:56So, we know WHAT the dishwasher does, but how does it do it?

0:04:56 > 0:05:00Hmm, I think we need to get inside and have a closer look.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02So follow me!

0:05:03 > 0:05:05Taking things apart is my job.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08It can be dangerous so don't do it yourself.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12That's right. Nina's been specially trained to do this.

0:05:12 > 0:05:17If you open up things that use electricity you could hurt yourself.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19OK, let's have a look.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21There's lots of pipes there.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24Yeah, and this one here goes to the top

0:05:24 > 0:05:26and goes to the bottom.

0:05:26 > 0:05:30I wonder where they lead? Let's have a look round the front.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33If you could just step back for me, I'll spin this round.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36And let me just open it up.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43Where do you think the pipes lead?

0:05:43 > 0:05:44Those arms, Nina.

0:05:44 > 0:05:48You're right. The pipes from the back lead to these arms.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51There's one at the top and one at the bottom,

0:05:51 > 0:05:54they have holes in them and they spin round.

0:05:54 > 0:05:58When you turn a dishwasher on, the tablet drops into this basin,

0:05:58 > 0:06:02the basin fills with water and mixes with the tablet.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05The warm, soapy water comes up through the pipes

0:06:05 > 0:06:07and out the holes in the arms.

0:06:07 > 0:06:09Rather than just fall onto the dishes,

0:06:09 > 0:06:12the water squirts round all over them.

0:06:12 > 0:06:16When the water squirts out, it makes the arms turn and spin round.

0:06:16 > 0:06:20That sloshing about we heard was lots of jets of water

0:06:20 > 0:06:23squirting over the dishes, washing and rinsing them.

0:06:23 > 0:06:27Oh, and I know something else that uses jets of water.

0:06:27 > 0:06:31- Shall we go and see another invention in action?- Yeah!

0:06:31 > 0:06:32Let's go!

0:06:38 > 0:06:42Off they go. I really enjoy seeing the big inventions.

0:06:42 > 0:06:47Hmm, something very big and exciting that uses jets?

0:06:47 > 0:06:49I wonder what that could be.

0:06:49 > 0:06:53Oh goody! I think we're here now!

0:06:53 > 0:06:58OK, guys. We've come to this harbour to see another invention

0:06:58 > 0:07:02that uses jets of water and I think I can hear it coming.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07It's a jet boat and look how quick it's going.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10One of the reasons it goes so fast is because,

0:07:10 > 0:07:13like the dishwasher, it uses jets of water.

0:07:13 > 0:07:16The jet boat takes water from the sea,

0:07:16 > 0:07:19and squirts it out the back really fast.

0:07:19 > 0:07:23In a dishwasher the jets make the arms spin round,

0:07:23 > 0:07:28but in a jet boat the jets of water push it forward. Wow, look at it go!

0:07:28 > 0:07:31Watch you don't get splashed, Nina!

0:07:31 > 0:07:34That jet boat is spraying water everywhere!

0:07:34 > 0:07:37Yeah! It's brilliant, isn't it?!

0:07:37 > 0:07:40Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, woohoo!

0:07:41 > 0:07:45We know jets of water can make things move, jet boats go forward

0:07:45 > 0:07:48and the arms in a dishwasher spin round.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50But how do they do that?

0:07:50 > 0:07:54To answer that I think we need to go back to the workshop,

0:07:54 > 0:07:57Come on, inventors, let's get inventing!

0:07:59 > 0:08:03So, dishwashers use lots of spraying water to get dishes clean.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06But who actually invented the dishwasher?

0:08:06 > 0:08:10Well, listen up, I can tell you that.

0:08:11 > 0:08:15Over 100 years ago, a lady called Josephine Cochrane

0:08:15 > 0:08:18loved having all her friends round to dinner.

0:08:18 > 0:08:20But once they had gone,

0:08:20 > 0:08:24there was always such a lot of washing up to do.

0:08:25 > 0:08:30So she measured all her dishes, made drawers to put them in,

0:08:30 > 0:08:34added water jets and put it all inside a big box.

0:08:37 > 0:08:41She had invented the very first dishwasher.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43Hooray!

0:08:52 > 0:08:55So your question was How Does A Dishwasher Work?

0:08:55 > 0:08:58We found out that inside a dishwasher are pipes

0:08:58 > 0:09:00that carry water to arms inside.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03They squirt water out their holes.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06And we also know that when the water squirts

0:09:06 > 0:09:08it makes the arms turn round.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11But how does water make the arms spin?

0:09:11 > 0:09:14I think we should get inventing to find out.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17Today we're going to make our very own water jet.

0:09:17 > 0:09:21The first thing we're going to do is pick two straws.

0:09:21 > 0:09:23Have whatever colour you like.

0:09:23 > 0:09:27Now we're going to cut a bit of the end off the straw,

0:09:27 > 0:09:30about that much should do it.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36Yeah! Straws are cool!

0:09:36 > 0:09:39You put them in the top of a bottle and suck like this.

0:09:40 > 0:09:43Oh, lots of yummy juice!

0:09:45 > 0:09:48We're not sucking through straws today, Bud.

0:09:48 > 0:09:50The next thing to do is pop the straws

0:09:50 > 0:09:53through the holes in our bottle.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55So, let's get to it.

0:09:56 > 0:09:59Might do this in front of my Nina-Cam.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02With the bendy end facing out the way.

0:10:02 > 0:10:03Like that?

0:10:03 > 0:10:04That's right.

0:10:09 > 0:10:13Now we're going to secure them in place using a bit of tape.

0:10:13 > 0:10:16Just around the outside of the straws.

0:10:22 > 0:10:23Good.

0:10:24 > 0:10:28Next we're going to take our piece of thread

0:10:28 > 0:10:32and we're going to tie it around the top of the bottle.

0:10:32 > 0:10:36Yeah, and now tie it in a knot.

0:10:42 > 0:10:46There we go, nearly finished, there's just one more thing

0:10:46 > 0:10:49to put in the bottle. What do you think it is?

0:10:49 > 0:10:50Water.

0:10:50 > 0:10:54That's right. A water jet's no good without water,

0:10:54 > 0:10:56so I'm just going to fill it up at the sink.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06Fill it right up to the top.

0:11:07 > 0:11:08And then...

0:11:11 > 0:11:13..woohoo!

0:11:13 > 0:11:16The bottle is spinning round.

0:11:16 > 0:11:18The water's coming out of the straws

0:11:18 > 0:11:23and that's forcing the bottle to spin round. OK, girls, your turn.

0:11:35 > 0:11:40Well done, Inventors, you've made your very own spinning water jet!

0:11:44 > 0:11:48Your question was How Does A Dishwasher Work?

0:11:48 > 0:11:52I think we've answered it. We found out that inside a dishwasher

0:11:52 > 0:11:56are pipes that carry water to arms with holes in them.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59The force of the water as it comes out of these holes

0:11:59 > 0:12:01makes the arms spin round.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04Which means the water squirts all over the dishes

0:12:04 > 0:12:09rather than just up or down. When the warm, soapy water squirts

0:12:09 > 0:12:13over the dishes it washes the dirt away leaving them clean.

0:12:13 > 0:12:15That's how a dishwasher works.

0:12:15 > 0:12:18Thanks for coming down to my workshop today.

0:12:18 > 0:12:20Thanks, Nina. Bye!

0:12:20 > 0:12:22Bye!

0:12:23 > 0:12:26If you want to make today's invention

0:12:26 > 0:12:29just go to the Nina section on the CBeebies website,

0:12:29 > 0:12:33that'll give you all the instructions you need

0:12:33 > 0:12:34to make your very own.

0:12:34 > 0:12:39Or, you may have other ideas of what you want to invent.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42- Bikes!- Trains!- Binoculars!

0:12:42 > 0:12:45- Televisions!- Speakers!- And cars!

0:12:45 > 0:12:48# We all love inventing!

0:12:48 > 0:12:50# Woah-oh-oh-oh-oh! #

0:12:50 > 0:12:51Go inventing!

0:12:51 > 0:12:53# We all love inventing

0:12:53 > 0:12:56# Why don't you try it too

0:12:57 > 0:13:00# Inventions make life easier

0:13:00 > 0:13:01# And help us get things done... #

0:13:01 > 0:13:03Go inventing!

0:13:03 > 0:13:06# I always like to take a look

0:13:06 > 0:13:08# At how they work and run... #

0:13:08 > 0:13:09Go inventing!

0:13:09 > 0:13:11# We all love inventing

0:13:11 > 0:13:14# Woah-oh-oh-oh-oh! #

0:13:14 > 0:13:15Go inventing!

0:13:15 > 0:13:18# We all love inventing

0:13:18 > 0:13:20# Why don't you try it too? #

0:13:21 > 0:13:24I've had a brilliant day. Hearing the dishwasher,

0:13:24 > 0:13:28sloshing water here, there and everywhere!

0:13:28 > 0:13:31Ah, it's been such a great day, man.

0:13:31 > 0:13:35Seeing inside the dishwasher was a real eye opener.

0:13:35 > 0:13:39All those pipes and arms working together to get the dishes clean.

0:13:39 > 0:13:42I've had a fabby day.

0:13:42 > 0:13:48Especially watching the jet boats on the water, they were soooo fast!

0:13:48 > 0:13:50It's been a marvellous day.

0:13:50 > 0:13:53The plastic bottle water jet was very clever.

0:13:53 > 0:13:57It's amazing how water can make something spin

0:13:57 > 0:13:59round and round and round.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02Our day's been bursting with inventions,

0:14:02 > 0:14:06- I hope you've enjoyed it. See you again soon! Bye!- Bye!
