0:01:21 > 0:01:24- Hi, guys.- We've got a question for you.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26Why do flowers smell so nice?

0:01:26 > 0:01:30That's a great question. Why do flowers smell so nice?

0:01:30 > 0:01:35Flowers look lovely. I've never thought about why they smell nice.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38Come to my lab and we'll do some experiments.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41ALL: See you soon, Nina. Bye.

0:01:41 > 0:01:42Bye!

0:01:42 > 0:01:46I'll need some help to answer this one, and I know who to ask.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49OK, Neurons. Time to get to work.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08ALL: Neurons at the ready, Nina.

0:02:08 > 0:02:12OK, today's question is, why do flowers smell so nice?

0:02:12 > 0:02:15Which Neuron will be most useful in helping us find out?

0:02:15 > 0:02:17- Me!- Me!- Me!- Me!- Me!

0:02:17 > 0:02:20Will it be fabulous Felix?

0:02:20 > 0:02:24I can help so very much, if you need the sense of touch.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26Will it be beautiful Belle?

0:02:26 > 0:02:31I send messages to brain from ear. If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.

0:02:31 > 0:02:32Will it be lovely Luke?

0:02:32 > 0:02:35For looking and seeing, day or night,

0:02:35 > 0:02:38I'll help you with your sense of sight.

0:02:38 > 0:02:39Will it be awesome Ollie?

0:02:39 > 0:02:42If it's pongy or whiffy but you can't tell,

0:02:42 > 0:02:46- I will help your sense of smell. - Or will it be baby Bud?

0:02:46 > 0:02:51Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53BEEPING

0:02:55 > 0:02:57It's Ollie!

0:02:57 > 0:03:00- ALL:- Go, Ollie! Go, Ollie!

0:03:00 > 0:03:01Go, Ollie! Go, Ollie!

0:03:01 > 0:03:04Go, Ollie! Go, Ollie!

0:03:04 > 0:03:09- Go, Ollie!- Standing by to smell and tell, Nina.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12Today's question is, why do flowers smell so nice?

0:03:12 > 0:03:17We'll definitely use our sense of smell for this. Ollie will help.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21Right, I need to get the lab ready before the experimeters arrive.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27Henry likes climbing. His sister, Rosie, loves horseriding.

0:03:27 > 0:03:32Nicola likes ice skating. They all want to know why flowers smell nice.

0:03:32 > 0:03:37Today, for one day only, Henry, Rosy and Nicola become the experimenters.

0:03:39 > 0:03:40ALL: Hi, Nina.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43Welcome to my science lab. Come in!

0:03:43 > 0:03:45It's lovely to see you.

0:03:45 > 0:03:49So, your question is, why do flowers smell so nice?

0:03:49 > 0:03:51Why do you want to know that?

0:03:51 > 0:03:55Because when my mum puts flowers in the vase, they smell nice.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57And we want to know why.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00I love it when flowers are in my lab.

0:04:00 > 0:04:05They help take away the nasty smells from some of my experiments.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08We need to investigate. For our first experiment,

0:04:08 > 0:04:13- we're going to use our senses. - ALL: Woo! A senses experiment.

0:04:13 > 0:04:14We're ready, Nina!

0:04:14 > 0:04:18OK, experimenters. Get those noses working.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21I'm going to pass round this flower.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23Have a good smell.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26The roses have a lovely perfumey smell.

0:04:26 > 0:04:31OK. Why don't you have a good sniff of all the other flowers?

0:04:34 > 0:04:38- So, what does this flower smell like?- Nothing.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40Of nothing? Let me have a smell.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44This flower doesn't have much scent at all.

0:04:47 > 0:04:49- Perfume.- Like perfume?

0:04:53 > 0:04:57- I don't smell anything from this one.- Neither do I.

0:05:01 > 0:05:06- Ooh, what does that flower smell like?- Horrible!

0:05:06 > 0:05:09It's horrible! This senses experiment has shown us

0:05:09 > 0:05:12that not all flowers smell nice.

0:05:13 > 0:05:18For this experiment, we're all wearing our safety goggles.

0:05:18 > 0:05:21Yes, it's very important to protect our eyes

0:05:21 > 0:05:25when we're doing experiments in Nina's science lab.

0:05:25 > 0:05:29And I'll protect my hands as I'll be using chemicals.

0:05:29 > 0:05:34OK. In these test tubes are different chemicals.

0:05:34 > 0:05:38Some chemicals can harm us if we breathe them in

0:05:38 > 0:05:42or if we put our nose close to them. I'll waft the smell towards you.

0:05:44 > 0:05:48Ooh, whiffy. They don't smell very nice.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51- Oh, is it not very nice?- No.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54OK, well going to mix these two together...

0:05:56 > 0:06:00..in this test tube.

0:06:07 > 0:06:12I'm very carefully going to put this test tube into some hot water

0:06:12 > 0:06:14to heat up the chemicals.

0:06:17 > 0:06:21So, our test tube has cooled down after its hot bath.

0:06:21 > 0:06:25I'm going to add one more chemical to make it safe to smell.

0:06:27 > 0:06:29OK, guys.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31What can you smell now?

0:06:32 > 0:06:34Apples.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36Apples, yeah?

0:06:36 > 0:06:38You're right, apples. Ha ha!

0:06:38 > 0:06:42So, I took different chemicals that didn't smell very nice

0:06:42 > 0:06:46and, by mixing them together, made a lovely appley smell.

0:06:46 > 0:06:51- It's like smelly magic! - It's the magic of science, Ollie.

0:06:51 > 0:06:55So, this experiment has shown us that smells can be made

0:06:55 > 0:06:57by mixing different things together.

0:06:57 > 0:07:01Flowers mix things together to make their smells too.

0:07:01 > 0:07:03But to find out why flowers smell,

0:07:03 > 0:07:08we're going to visit some special friends in the garden.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15Off we go for another adventure.

0:07:15 > 0:07:20Nina said she's taking us to meet some friends in the garden.

0:07:20 > 0:07:26- I have a feeling it might be birds. - Yeah! It might be big, black crows.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28Listen. I think we're here!

0:07:50 > 0:07:54Don't we look great? These are special beekeeper outfits

0:07:54 > 0:07:55to keep us safe.

0:07:55 > 0:07:59The friends I want you to meet in this lovely flower garden

0:07:59 > 0:08:02are some very busy bees. So, follow me!

0:08:21 > 0:08:27- Hi, Vince.- Hi, Nina.- Our beekeeper Vince is trained to look after bees.

0:08:27 > 0:08:31Bees can sting, so you should always be very careful around them.

0:08:31 > 0:08:37What an amazing sight! All those busy bees hard at work.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40Now, this is called a beehive. Bees live in here

0:08:40 > 0:08:44and their job is to make honey.

0:08:44 > 0:08:48Did Nina say honey?! Oh, I LOVE eating honey!

0:08:48 > 0:08:53It's so sweet and runny and... yum, yum, yummy!

0:08:53 > 0:08:57The bees that we can see buzzing around the garden are collect nectar

0:08:57 > 0:09:00from the inside of the flowers.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04Nectar is a sugary, sweet liquid that some plants make

0:09:04 > 0:09:09and the bees bring it back here to the beehive to make it into honey.

0:09:09 > 0:09:12But how do think the bees find the flowers?

0:09:12 > 0:09:16- Do they see the bright colours? - Bees have a good sense of sight,

0:09:16 > 0:09:19but they also have a very good sense of smell.

0:09:19 > 0:09:25the flowers create special smells to attract bees and other insects

0:09:25 > 0:09:29so that they come and collect their nectar. But how do the flowers make

0:09:29 > 0:09:34so many different, lovely smells? We need to go back to the lab!

0:09:36 > 0:09:41We're going to make our very own smells, just like flowers.

0:09:41 > 0:09:46All these bottles have different perfume oils in them.

0:09:46 > 0:09:51We're going to have a good smell and choose our three favourite scents.

0:09:51 > 0:09:53Let's get sniffing!

0:10:04 > 0:10:07They all smell very different, don't they?

0:10:07 > 0:10:12- Yeah.- All these perfume oils come from plants and flowers,

0:10:12 > 0:10:18so a rose oil comes from roses! Have you picked your three favourites?

0:10:18 > 0:10:23- Yes.- OK. We're going to put one drop of each of our chosen perfume scents

0:10:23 > 0:10:27into the test tube and add a little water.

0:10:47 > 0:10:53Well done, guys, we've all made our very own perfume! Let's sniff them.

0:10:55 > 0:10:59Oh, here we go! It's a perfume sniff-athon!

0:11:02 > 0:11:06What do yours smell like? Rosie?

0:11:06 > 0:11:11- Minty orange.- Minty and orange? Lovely! Henry, what's yours like?

0:11:11 > 0:11:16- Em, orange.- Do you like it?- Yes.

0:11:16 > 0:11:19- What's yours like, Nicola? - It's sort of minty.

0:11:19 > 0:11:23Lovely! You've done really well! Well, I'm afraid, guys...

0:11:23 > 0:11:29mine's not very nice. I used some of the same oils that you guys did,

0:11:29 > 0:11:33but my mixture's completely different and not very nice at all!

0:11:33 > 0:11:38So this experiment has shown us that new and different smells can be made

0:11:38 > 0:11:43by mixing other smells together, and that's what flowers do!

0:11:47 > 0:11:52You asked, why do flowers smell so nice? And I think we've answered it!

0:11:52 > 0:11:58First we found out that while some flowers smell nice, some don't.

0:11:58 > 0:12:01We discovered that flowers give off a scent

0:12:01 > 0:12:06to help bees and other insects find their nectar.

0:12:06 > 0:12:10They take smelly chemicals from the soil and mix them to make smells.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13By smelling different to other flowers,

0:12:13 > 0:12:16they can attract the bees and other insects they need.

0:12:16 > 0:12:20These insects then help them make more flowers.

0:12:20 > 0:12:25- I hope that's answered your question.- ALL: Thanks, Nina. Bye!

0:12:25 > 0:12:28Bye!

0:12:30 > 0:12:34If you want to know more about the science that's all around us

0:12:34 > 0:12:37go to the Nina section on the CBeebies website. Have fun!

0:12:41 > 0:12:44- Lab coat on, Nina? - Lab coat on, Ollie.

0:12:44 > 0:12:48- Safety gloves on, Nina? - Safety gloves on, Felix.

0:12:48 > 0:12:52- And don't forget your goggles, Nina. - Goggles are on, Luke.

0:12:52 > 0:12:54I think we're ready!

0:12:56 > 0:12:58# We do experiments in the lab

0:12:58 > 0:13:01# In the lab! Shooby-dooby in the lab!

0:13:01 > 0:13:04# Bubbling experiments in the lab

0:13:04 > 0:13:07# In the lab! Go, Nina! In the lab!

0:13:07 > 0:13:10# Fizzing and popping Steam and smoke

0:13:10 > 0:13:13# We need protection Don't we, folks?

0:13:13 > 0:13:18# We always put our safety first

0:13:18 > 0:13:20# Dooby dooby dooby dooby

0:13:20 > 0:13:22# We do experiments in the lab

0:13:22 > 0:13:24# In the lab! Go, Nina! #

0:13:24 > 0:13:30I really enjoyed myself today. A day of serious sniffing and smelling.

0:13:30 > 0:13:33Ah, it's been such a great day, man!

0:13:33 > 0:13:38So many colourful flowers to admire! Beautiful!

0:13:38 > 0:13:41I've had a fabby day!

0:13:41 > 0:13:47The best bit was meeting the honey bees! Bzzzzzz!

0:13:47 > 0:13:49I've had a brilliant day!

0:13:49 > 0:13:53It was so cool when everyone made perfume!

0:13:53 > 0:13:57Our day's been bursting with sensational experiments!

0:13:57 > 0:14:01- I hope you've enjoyed it! See you soon! Bye!- Bye!
