0:01:09 > 0:01:13I hear a beep, I see a flash. I wonder what they're going to ask.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18- ALL: Hi, Nina! - Hi, guys.

0:01:18 > 0:01:20We've got a question for you.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22How does popcorn pop?

0:01:22 > 0:01:25That's a very good question - why does popcorn pop?

0:01:25 > 0:01:29Come to the lab and we'll investigate.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32- ALL: See you soon, Nina. - Bye!

0:01:32 > 0:01:37I'll need help to answer this and I know just who to ask.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40OK, Neurons, time to get to work.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58ALL: Neurons at the ready, Nina.

0:01:58 > 0:02:02OK. Today's question is, why does popcorn pop?

0:02:02 > 0:02:06Which Neuron will be most useful to help find the answer?

0:02:06 > 0:02:08ALL: Me! Me! Me! Oh, me!

0:02:08 > 0:02:11Will it be fabulous Felix?

0:02:11 > 0:02:14I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16Will it be beautiful Belle?

0:02:16 > 0:02:21I send messages to brain from ear. If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.

0:02:21 > 0:02:22Will it be lovely Luke?

0:02:25 > 0:02:28I'll help you with your sense of sight.

0:02:28 > 0:02:29Will it be awesome Ollie?

0:02:29 > 0:02:32If it's pongy or whiffy but you can't tell,

0:02:32 > 0:02:36- my messages help your sense of smell. - Or will it be baby Bud?

0:02:36 > 0:02:41Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat!

0:02:45 > 0:02:47It's Belle!

0:02:47 > 0:02:50NEURONS: Go, Belle! Go, Belle!

0:02:50 > 0:02:54Go, Belle! Go, Belle! Go, Belle!

0:02:54 > 0:02:55Go, Belle!

0:02:55 > 0:02:57Brilliant! I'm all ears, Nina.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00Today's question is, why does popcorn pop?

0:03:00 > 0:03:03Because popcorn popping is something we hear,

0:03:03 > 0:03:10Belle the hearing neuron will be busy. I need to get the lab ready!

0:03:11 > 0:03:14Matthew likes drawing, Muhammad loves judo,

0:03:14 > 0:03:17Mirran likes playing with her dolls.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20They all want to find out why popcorn pops.

0:03:20 > 0:03:25So for one day only, they become experimenters!

0:03:27 > 0:03:28ALL: Hi, Nina.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31Oh, welcome to my lab. It's lovely to see you.

0:03:31 > 0:03:35Your question was, why does popcorn pop?

0:03:35 > 0:03:38What made that question pop into your head?

0:03:38 > 0:03:42- It's the only food that makes a popping sound.- You're right.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45Popcorn does make a brilliant sound.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48- Yeah! A bit like this! - POP

0:03:48 > 0:03:51I think we need to investigate.

0:03:51 > 0:03:55For our first experiment, we're going to use our senses

0:03:55 > 0:04:00Whoop-whoo! A senses experiment! We're ready, Nina!

0:04:00 > 0:04:03We're going to take a closer look at some popcorn.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06Do you know where popcorn comes from?

0:04:06 > 0:04:08ALL: No idea.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11It comes from a plant, that grows, called corn.

0:04:11 > 0:04:16This is what we call corn on the cob.

0:04:16 > 0:04:20These little corn kernels are what make popcorn.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23But they're dried first, to look like this.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26So what do you think, guys?

0:04:26 > 0:04:30Should we use the dried corn kernels and make some popcorn?

0:04:30 > 0:04:31ALL: Yeah!

0:04:31 > 0:04:34Ha-ha! OK!

0:04:34 > 0:04:37There are dried corn kernels in this special bag.

0:04:37 > 0:04:41I'll just pop it in here.

0:04:41 > 0:04:45Ooh, quiet, everyone. It's time for me to listen.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48I think we'll hear some popping soon.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51Never put things in the microwave yourself.

0:04:51 > 0:04:52POPPING

0:04:52 > 0:04:55- Can you hear that?- It's popping.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58Yeah, it's popping lots, isn't it?

0:04:58 > 0:05:00What a brilliant noise!

0:05:03 > 0:05:07- BEEP - Ooh, I think that means it's ready.

0:05:07 > 0:05:11I'm going to pop these gloves on because it'll be hot.

0:05:22 > 0:05:26My, my. The corn kernels have really changed shape.

0:05:26 > 0:05:27You're right, Luke.

0:05:27 > 0:05:31The unpopped corn is very different to the popped corn.

0:05:31 > 0:05:36- It's got bigger.- And once it's cooled down, we can taste it!

0:05:39 > 0:05:43- Mm, mm.- Tastes nice!

0:05:43 > 0:05:44Mm, that's lovely.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46Yummy!

0:05:46 > 0:05:50When we cooked the kernels, they changed and got bigger.

0:05:50 > 0:05:55I wonder if that's something to do with the popping noise.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57We need to do another experiment!

0:05:59 > 0:06:02For this experiment, we'll use balloons.

0:06:02 > 0:06:08- What would you normally do to make a balloon get bigger?- Blow it up.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11By blowing air into it, like this.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19Ta-dah! Hee-hee.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22The balloon is bigger because it's full of air.

0:06:22 > 0:06:26Air is a gas and most gases are invisible.

0:06:26 > 0:06:30There's air all around us and we can't see it, can we?

0:06:30 > 0:06:32ALL: No, Nina.

0:06:32 > 0:06:36Would you believe me if I said I could make a balloon bigger

0:06:36 > 0:06:39without blowing into it - without even touching it?

0:06:39 > 0:06:41ALL: No way, Nina!

0:06:41 > 0:06:46Well, I am going to show you how. Safety glasses on first.

0:06:46 > 0:06:47I've got mine here.

0:06:47 > 0:06:51Yes! It's very important to protect our eyes

0:06:51 > 0:06:55when we do experiments in Nina's science lab.

0:06:55 > 0:06:59This tub is filled with liquid nitrogen.

0:06:59 > 0:07:04It's very cold - so cold, I'm wearing my protective gloves.

0:07:04 > 0:07:08Inside here are some balloons.

0:07:08 > 0:07:12I'm going to take them out gently, using these tongs.

0:07:15 > 0:07:16RUSTLING

0:07:16 > 0:07:18What a brilliant noise!

0:07:22 > 0:07:23Will I get another out?

0:07:23 > 0:07:25ALL: Yeah.

0:07:25 > 0:07:26Yeah, OK.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29A blue one!

0:07:29 > 0:07:30Oh!

0:07:30 > 0:07:33It's popping.

0:07:33 > 0:07:35Yeah, it sounds like it's popping.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37It's like MAGIC!

0:07:37 > 0:07:40But it's not magic, Bud. It's science.

0:07:40 > 0:07:43Inside the balloons is a bit of air.

0:07:43 > 0:07:48Gas like air gets bigger, or expands, when it's warmer.

0:07:48 > 0:07:52So when the balloons were in the tub of cold liquid nitrogen,

0:07:52 > 0:07:55the gas inside was very cold and small.

0:07:55 > 0:07:59But when we pulled the balloon out into the warm air,

0:07:59 > 0:08:01the gas inside got bigger.

0:08:01 > 0:08:05Balloons are stretchy, so they got bigger as the gas pushed out.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07What would happen

0:08:07 > 0:08:12if the balloons just kept on getting bigger and bigger?

0:08:12 > 0:08:15- It will burst.- Like this?

0:08:15 > 0:08:18POP Oh! I wasn't expecting that!

0:08:18 > 0:08:23From this experiment we've found out that when gases expand quickly,

0:08:23 > 0:08:27they push things around them outwards and upwards

0:08:27 > 0:08:31and can make a pop and this is what happens to corn kernels, too.

0:08:31 > 0:08:37Gas trapped in the kernel can expand, making it pop.

0:08:37 > 0:08:41I know something else really exciting that shoots into the air

0:08:41 > 0:08:45- and pops because of gas. Shall we go and see it?- Yeah!

0:08:50 > 0:08:53Mm. Where do you think we're going today?

0:08:53 > 0:08:58Nina said we're going to see something that shoots into the air.

0:08:58 > 0:09:02- It could be a plane. - Or a space rocket!

0:09:02 > 0:09:06I don't know how we'll see it - it's dark outside.

0:09:06 > 0:09:11- We've not come far. Have you guessed why we're here?- No!

0:09:11 > 0:09:16Keep looking up at the sky. I've got a feeling something will pop up!

0:09:19 > 0:09:21BANG

0:09:21 > 0:09:27See, I told you we'd see something that shoots into the air! Fireworks!

0:09:32 > 0:09:37They make lots of noises, don't they? What do they sound like?

0:09:37 > 0:09:40- Popping like popcorn with big bangs. - They do.

0:09:40 > 0:09:44That's because gases inside the fireworks push outwards

0:09:44 > 0:09:50and this sends them up into the sky and makes them pop, like popcorn!

0:09:50 > 0:09:52I wonder what makes this happen.

0:09:53 > 0:09:58Fireworks are very dangerous, so we're standing well back.

0:10:00 > 0:10:02BANGING

0:10:02 > 0:10:05What do you think made the firework go off?

0:10:05 > 0:10:07That man lit it.

0:10:07 > 0:10:11That's right. The firework went into the sky because the man lit it

0:10:11 > 0:10:14and a flame appeared, like a little fire.

0:10:14 > 0:10:18- What do we think of when we think of fire?- Hot!

0:10:18 > 0:10:20Yes, fire is very hot.

0:10:20 > 0:10:26Perhaps heat is important in making corn kernels expand and go pop!

0:10:26 > 0:10:30I think we need to go back to the lab for a final experiment.

0:10:30 > 0:10:32- Let's go! - ALL: Yeah!

0:10:34 > 0:10:36Have a look in front of you, guys.

0:10:36 > 0:10:41We have a bottle inside some ice. Does the bottle feel cold?

0:10:41 > 0:10:43- Yeah.- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46- Yeah. It's very cold, isn't it? - Yeah.

0:10:46 > 0:10:49OK. You each have a glove in front of you.

0:10:49 > 0:10:56We need to put this glove over the cold bottle like this.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58Good.

0:10:58 > 0:11:02We need to put our protective gloves on

0:11:02 > 0:11:08and very carefully lift the cold bottle into this hot water.

0:11:08 > 0:11:12It's important not to touch hot water - it could burn you.

0:11:13 > 0:11:17That's it. Keep watching your glove.

0:11:18 > 0:11:22- It's moving! - Do you see what's happening?

0:11:22 > 0:11:25Mine's getting bigger! Wow!

0:11:25 > 0:11:30Why don't you shake its hand?

0:11:30 > 0:11:35- Does it feel like there's anything in there?- Yes.

0:11:35 > 0:11:38That's because there's air inside them.

0:11:38 > 0:11:41The cold bottles had trapped cold air

0:11:41 > 0:11:46and the hot water started to warm up the cold air.

0:11:46 > 0:11:50As it warmed up, it got bigger and pushed up into the glove,

0:11:50 > 0:11:52making the glove bigger!

0:11:52 > 0:11:54Oh!

0:11:54 > 0:11:56This happens when we heat popcorn.

0:11:56 > 0:12:01Dried corn kernels also have a bit of trapped air inside them.

0:12:01 > 0:12:05when we cook them, the heat makes the air expand so quickly,

0:12:05 > 0:12:07that they burst open and pop!

0:12:11 > 0:12:15Your question was, why does popcorn pop?

0:12:15 > 0:12:18I think we've answered it.

0:12:18 > 0:12:23We found that when gas gets hotter, it expands and pushes outwards.

0:12:23 > 0:12:27This pushing can send something into the air, like a firework

0:12:27 > 0:12:29or a piece of popcorn!

0:12:29 > 0:12:33If it happens fast enough, it makes a loud noise.

0:12:33 > 0:12:38- I hope that answered your question. - ALL: Thanks, Nina! Bye!- Bye!

0:12:42 > 0:12:45If you want to know more about the science around us,

0:12:45 > 0:12:50go to the Nina section on the CBeebies website. Have fun!

0:12:50 > 0:12:51Lab coat on, Nina?

0:12:51 > 0:12:53Lab coat on, Ollie.

0:12:53 > 0:12:55Safety gloves on, Nina?

0:12:55 > 0:12:57Safety gloves on, Felix.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59Don't forget your goggles, Nina.

0:12:59 > 0:13:03Goggles are on, Luke. I think we're ready!

0:13:04 > 0:13:06# We do experiments in the lab

0:13:06 > 0:13:10- # In the lab! - Shooby-dooby, in the lab

0:13:10 > 0:13:12# Bubbling experiments in the lab

0:13:12 > 0:13:13# In the lab!

0:13:13 > 0:13:16# Go, Nina, in the lab

0:13:16 > 0:13:19# Fizzing and popping Steam and smoke

0:13:19 > 0:13:22# We need protection Don't we, folks?

0:13:22 > 0:13:26# We always put our safety first

0:13:26 > 0:13:28# Shooby-dooby, dooby-dooby

0:13:28 > 0:13:30# We do experiments in the lab

0:13:30 > 0:13:31# In the lab!

0:13:31 > 0:13:33# Go, Nina! #

0:13:33 > 0:13:37Oh, I've had a brilliant day! There's been so many sounds!

0:13:37 > 0:13:39I've really enjoyed myself today.

0:13:39 > 0:13:42the smell of the popcorn was just lovely.

0:13:42 > 0:13:45I've had a fabby day!

0:13:45 > 0:13:49I loved seeing the balloon blow up all by itself!

0:13:49 > 0:13:52Ah, it's been such a great day, man!

0:13:52 > 0:13:56See those fireworks shoot up into the sky!

0:13:56 > 0:13:58It's been a marvellous day!

0:13:58 > 0:14:02That bottle felt very cold but it soon heated up!

0:14:02 > 0:14:05Our day has been bursting with experiments.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08I hope you've enjoyed it. Bye!

0:14:08 > 0:14:10ALL: Bye!
