0:00:57 > 0:00:59Oh, hello.

0:00:59 > 0:01:03I'm feeling cold today, so I'm having a cup of hot chocolate.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06Oh, it smells delicious and chocolately.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09I hope it tastes as good as it smells! Ha-ha!

0:01:11 > 0:01:12Mm! Oh, it does.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15BEEPING

0:01:15 > 0:01:20I hear a beep, I see a flash. I wonder what they're going to ask.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25ALL: Hi, Nina!

0:01:25 > 0:01:26Hello, there.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28We've got a question for you.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31How do smells reach our noses?

0:01:31 > 0:01:35That's a great question. How do smells reach our noses?

0:01:35 > 0:01:38Right now, I can smell my hot chocolate,

0:01:38 > 0:01:42but I'm not sure how the smell is reaching my nose.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44Come to my lab and we'll investigate.

0:01:44 > 0:01:48- ALL: See you soon, Nina! Bye! - Bye!

0:01:48 > 0:01:53I'll need help to answer this and I know just who to ask.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56OK, Neurons, time to get to work.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14ALL: Neurons at the ready, Nina.

0:02:14 > 0:02:18OK. Today's question is, how do smells reach our noses?

0:02:18 > 0:02:23Which Neuron will be most useful to help find the answer?

0:02:23 > 0:02:24ALL: Me! Me! Me! Oh, me!

0:02:24 > 0:02:27Will it be fabulous Felix?

0:02:27 > 0:02:31I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33Will it be beautiful Belle?

0:02:33 > 0:02:35I send messages to brain from ear.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.

0:02:38 > 0:02:42- Will it be lovely Luke?- For looking and seeing, day or night,

0:02:42 > 0:02:44I'll help you with your sense of sight.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46Will it be awesome Ollie?

0:02:46 > 0:02:49If it's pongy or whiffy but you can't tell,

0:02:49 > 0:02:53- my messages help your sense of smell. - Or will it be baby Bud?

0:02:53 > 0:02:58Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy when you eat!

0:03:01 > 0:03:06CHEERING

0:03:06 > 0:03:09ALL: Go, Ollie! Go, Ollie!

0:03:09 > 0:03:11Go, Ollie! Go, Ollie!

0:03:11 > 0:03:15Standing by to smell and tell, Nina.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19Today's question is how do smells reach our noses?

0:03:19 > 0:03:24We'll be using our sense of smell to answer, so Ollie will help today.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28I need to get the lab ready before the experimenters arrive.

0:03:30 > 0:03:34Eliza grows vegetables, Eliana loves ice skating

0:03:34 > 0:03:36and Miranda likes cricket.

0:03:36 > 0:03:40but they all want to find out more about smells.

0:03:40 > 0:03:45So, today, Eliza, Eliana and Miranda become the experimenters.

0:03:45 > 0:03:50- Hi, Nina!- Welcome to my science lab.

0:03:50 > 0:03:54Your question is - how do smells reach our noses?

0:03:54 > 0:03:59- Why do you want to know?- In my bedroom, I can smell Mum's cooking.

0:03:59 > 0:04:01We want to know why.

0:04:01 > 0:04:06Sometimes if I do a smelly experiment in one part of the lab,

0:04:06 > 0:04:10I can often smell it in the next room.

0:04:10 > 0:04:14We need to do some investigating to find out more.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16We're going to use our senses.

0:04:16 > 0:04:20A senses experiment! We're ready, Nina.

0:04:20 > 0:04:26- What are your favourite smells? - Chocolate.- Crisps.- Flowers.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29What smells do you not like?

0:04:29 > 0:04:33- Rotten fish.- Smelly socks.- Sewers.

0:04:33 > 0:04:37Sewers! Oh, they really are stinky smells!

0:04:37 > 0:04:44We're going to use our sense of smell to guess what's in these jars.

0:04:44 > 0:04:48Eliza, can you pop your blindfold on, please.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50I'll give you this jar.

0:04:50 > 0:04:55Just using your sense of smell, can you try and guess what's inside?

0:04:55 > 0:04:58Come on. Deep breaths in through the nose.

0:04:58 > 0:04:59That's it.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02Soap?

0:05:02 > 0:05:06Why don't you take off your blindfold and have a look? Soap!

0:05:06 > 0:05:07Well done!

0:05:07 > 0:05:10OK, Eliana. Can you pop your blindfold on for me?

0:05:14 > 0:05:16And...take a big sniff.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20- Is it an orange?- Take your blindfold off and have a look!

0:05:20 > 0:05:23It is an orange! Excellent!

0:05:24 > 0:05:29And here's your jar in front of you.

0:05:29 > 0:05:31Is it mint?

0:05:31 > 0:05:32Have a look...

0:05:32 > 0:05:35It's a rose.

0:05:35 > 0:05:37That's a difficult one.

0:05:37 > 0:05:38Well done.

0:05:38 > 0:05:42So, we can smell things when we breathe in through our noses.

0:05:42 > 0:05:46But we still don't know how the smell reaches our noses.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49So I think we need to do another experiment!

0:05:50 > 0:05:54I have a special smelly treat for you in this box.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57- Shall we open it?- ALL: Yeah!

0:05:57 > 0:06:00OK! Here we go.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05- NEURONS:- Ugh!- It stinks!

0:06:05 > 0:06:10Oh, Nina, that is one fantastic whiff-bomb of a cheesy smell!

0:06:10 > 0:06:13That is the cheesiest cheese ever!

0:06:13 > 0:06:14Are you going to taste it?

0:06:14 > 0:06:16Not today, Bud!

0:06:16 > 0:06:20This is a smelling experiment, not tasting, so I won't be eating any!

0:06:20 > 0:06:23- So what do you think of the smell? - Weird!

0:06:23 > 0:06:26- Do you not like it?- No!

0:06:26 > 0:06:29Blue cheese is one of my favourite smells!

0:06:29 > 0:06:32But I'll put the lid back on to stop the smell escaping.

0:06:32 > 0:06:36We have another surprise here, but this isn't for smelling,

0:06:36 > 0:06:37this is to look at.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44Cloud in a box! Cool, Nina!

0:06:44 > 0:06:46What's happening to the smoke?

0:06:46 > 0:06:49It's coming out and going out in the air.

0:06:49 > 0:06:53- It's twirling around and going out fast.- Yes!

0:06:53 > 0:06:56So when the smoke escaped from the box,

0:06:56 > 0:06:58it spread out immediately,

0:06:58 > 0:07:00and in science, we call this diffusion.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03This is what happens to smells too.

0:07:03 > 0:07:06There are lots of cheesy particles in the cheese box.

0:07:06 > 0:07:11When they escaped, they diffused outwards towards our noses!

0:07:11 > 0:07:14And stunk us all out!

0:07:14 > 0:07:18You all did a great job of smelling the stinky particles.

0:07:18 > 0:07:20But for our next experiment,

0:07:20 > 0:07:24I'm taking you to meet a really special super smeller!

0:07:24 > 0:07:26So, let's go, experimenters!

0:07:31 > 0:07:33Off we go for another adventure.

0:07:33 > 0:07:37Nina said we're going to meet a super smeller.

0:07:37 > 0:07:38Maybe it's horses!

0:07:38 > 0:07:42Their big noses must be great for smelling!

0:07:42 > 0:07:45I think we're here! But I don't see any horses.

0:07:47 > 0:07:51This is the super smeller I told you about!

0:07:51 > 0:07:52This is Xena, the police dog!

0:07:52 > 0:07:55And I've got a challenge for her, and you too.

0:07:55 > 0:07:59But first, I'd like you to take a sniff of my scarf.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03So what does it smell like?

0:08:03 > 0:08:05It smells a bit perfume-y.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08What do you think, Xena?

0:08:08 > 0:08:09Xena...

0:08:12 > 0:08:14Oh! I think she liked that!

0:08:14 > 0:08:16So now I'm going to hide it,

0:08:16 > 0:08:20and we'll see who can find it using just their sense of smell.

0:08:20 > 0:08:21So no peeking!

0:08:34 > 0:08:36OK! You know how my scarf smells,

0:08:36 > 0:08:40so get your nose working and see if you can find it!

0:08:40 > 0:08:42Xena's even going to give you a head start.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45Three, two, one, go!

0:08:51 > 0:08:56They're smelling really hard, but they can't find it.

0:09:00 > 0:09:01It's no good, Nina.

0:09:01 > 0:09:03We've been sniffing all over.

0:09:03 > 0:09:05But we can't find the scarf!

0:09:05 > 0:09:09Well, let's give our super smeller, Xena, a try!

0:09:25 > 0:09:27XENA BARKS

0:09:27 > 0:09:32Woof! Woof! The dog sounds excited!

0:09:32 > 0:09:37Oh, wow! Xena's sniffed out my scarf really quickly. Well done, girl!

0:09:37 > 0:09:42And that's because dogs have a much better sense of smell than humans.

0:09:42 > 0:09:46Our noses have about five million smell sensors in them,

0:09:46 > 0:09:48which sounds like a lot.

0:09:48 > 0:09:51But dogs have about 220 million!

0:09:51 > 0:09:55Which means that dogs can smell some things that we can't.

0:09:55 > 0:09:59So I think we need to go back to the lab for one final experiment.

0:09:59 > 0:10:01Let's go!

0:10:04 > 0:10:08So, your question was how do smells reach our noses?

0:10:08 > 0:10:11And so far we have found out that to smell,

0:10:11 > 0:10:14we breathe air in through our noses.

0:10:14 > 0:10:18And when we do that, our noses are detecting tiny, smelly particles

0:10:18 > 0:10:21that have spread out, or diffused.

0:10:21 > 0:10:25But, why can't we always smell things?

0:10:25 > 0:10:27Let's get experimenting!

0:10:27 > 0:10:28KIDS: Yeah!

0:10:28 > 0:10:33OK, guys, noses at the ready, and step on to your feet.

0:10:33 > 0:10:37I'd like you to stand there for the whole experiment, OK?

0:10:37 > 0:10:40These petri dishes each have a single drop

0:10:40 > 0:10:43of something rather smelly in them,

0:10:43 > 0:10:45but you can't smell it at the moment

0:10:45 > 0:10:49because the lids are stopping the smell from escaping.

0:10:49 > 0:10:51I'm going to take the lids off, one at a time,

0:10:51 > 0:10:54and then you will give a big sniff,

0:10:54 > 0:10:57and tell me when you can smell the smell.

0:10:57 > 0:11:00Taking the first lid off.

0:11:02 > 0:11:06I'm sniffing and sniffing, but there's no smell.

0:11:06 > 0:11:08Can you smell anything?

0:11:08 > 0:11:10KIDS: No.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13Let's take off the second lid.

0:11:13 > 0:11:15Can you smell anything?

0:11:15 > 0:11:16No.

0:11:16 > 0:11:20No? OK, well, I'll take off the third lid!

0:11:25 > 0:11:27There's a faint waft of something.

0:11:27 > 0:11:31- Something minty. - What do you guys think?- Mint!

0:11:31 > 0:11:33Mint! Well done.

0:11:33 > 0:11:34It is minty!

0:11:34 > 0:11:38But we had to lift three of the lids before we could smell it.

0:11:38 > 0:11:42There were minty smelly particles going into the air,

0:11:42 > 0:11:47but our noses could not detect them until there were enough of them.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50Dogs can smell even a few smelly particles,

0:11:50 > 0:11:54but humans need there to be lots of particles,

0:11:54 > 0:11:58like with the stinky cheese, before we think something is smelly!

0:11:59 > 0:12:02Your question was how do smells reach our noses,

0:12:02 > 0:12:04and I think we've answered it!

0:12:04 > 0:12:07We discovered that when you smell something,

0:12:07 > 0:12:11your nose is detecting tiny invisible particles

0:12:11 > 0:12:14that floated into the air and spread out.

0:12:14 > 0:12:17And in science, we call this diffusion.

0:12:17 > 0:12:19But there needs to be lots of smelly particles

0:12:19 > 0:12:21for our noses to detect them,

0:12:21 > 0:12:24because our noses aren't as good as dog's noses.

0:12:24 > 0:12:26I hope that's answered your question!

0:12:26 > 0:12:28KIDS: Thanks, Nina. Bye!

0:12:28 > 0:12:30Bye, guys!

0:12:34 > 0:12:37If you want to know more about the science that's all around us,

0:12:37 > 0:12:41go to the Nina section on the CBeebies website. Have fun!

0:12:44 > 0:12:46Lab coat on, Nina?

0:12:46 > 0:12:48Lab coat on, Ollie!

0:12:48 > 0:12:50Safety gloves on, Nina?

0:12:50 > 0:12:52Safety gloves on, Felix!

0:12:52 > 0:12:54And don't forget your goggles, Nina!

0:12:54 > 0:12:56Goggles are on, Luke!

0:12:56 > 0:12:58I think we're ready!

0:12:59 > 0:13:01# We do experiments in the lab

0:13:01 > 0:13:05# Shooby-dooby, in the lab

0:13:05 > 0:13:07# Bubbling experiments in the lab

0:13:07 > 0:13:11# IN THE LAB! Go, Nina, in the lab

0:13:11 > 0:13:13# Fizzing and popping Steam and smoke

0:13:13 > 0:13:17# We need protection Don't we, folks?

0:13:17 > 0:13:21# We always put our safety first

0:13:23 > 0:13:25# We do experiments in the lab... #

0:13:25 > 0:13:27- IN THE LAB!- Go, Nina.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30I really enjoyed myself today.

0:13:30 > 0:13:33It was a sniff-a-thon of super smells.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36I had a fabby day!

0:13:36 > 0:13:40The stinky cheese in the box was really smelly!

0:13:40 > 0:13:42But I'd like to taste it.

0:13:42 > 0:13:45Ah, it's been such a great day, man!

0:13:45 > 0:13:49Nina's cloud in a box experiment was very cool.

0:13:49 > 0:13:51Oh, I've had a brilliant day,

0:13:51 > 0:13:54listening to all that doggy barking!

0:13:54 > 0:13:55Woof! Woof!

0:13:55 > 0:13:59Our day has been bursting with sensational experiments.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01I hope you've enjoyed it. See you soon! Bye!

0:14:01 > 0:14:03ALL: Bye!
