0:00:05 > 0:00:08# If you've got a question and you don't know where to go
0:00:08 > 0:00:11# Ask Nina for some help Cos she's got a science show
0:00:11 > 0:00:14# She makes sense of her senses While helping all her fans
0:00:14 > 0:00:17# By doing her experiments with potions and with bangs
0:00:17 > 0:00:19- # Touch your tongue - Tongue!
0:00:19 > 0:00:20- # Fingers - Fingers!
0:00:20 > 0:00:23- # Eyes.- Eyes! - Ears.- Ears!- Nose.- Nose!
0:00:23 > 0:00:26# Nina and the Neurons find out what you need to know
0:00:26 > 0:00:29# Nina and the Neurons find out what you need to know
0:00:29 > 0:00:32# Luke, he helps us with our eyes and Felix with our touch
0:00:32 > 0:00:35# Ollie sniffs out smells And Belle, she hears so much
0:00:35 > 0:00:38# Bud is Ollie's brother He helps us with our taste
0:00:38 > 0:00:41# They're Nina's little Neurons And they're coming to your place!
0:00:41 > 0:00:43- # Touch your tongue - Tongue!
0:00:43 > 0:00:44- # Fingers - Fingers!
0:00:44 > 0:00:48- # Eyes.- Eyes! - Ears.- Ears!- Nose.- Nose!
0:00:48 > 0:00:50- # Nina and the Neurons find out what you need to know.- Yeah!
0:00:50 > 0:00:53# Nina and the Neurons find out what you need to know
0:00:53 > 0:00:55# Oh yeah! #
0:00:58 > 0:01:01Oh, hello! I'm just making myself
0:01:01 > 0:01:03a wee cup of tea for the "how long does it take
0:01:03 > 0:01:06"to drink a cup of tea experiment".
0:01:06 > 0:01:07BURBLING BEEP
0:01:07 > 0:01:11I hear a beep. I see a flash. I wonder what they're going to ask?
0:01:11 > 0:01:12CLICK!
0:01:12 > 0:01:14- BOTH:- Hi, Nina!
0:01:14 > 0:01:16Hi, guys.
0:01:16 > 0:01:19- We've got a question for you. - What is metal?
0:01:19 > 0:01:22That's a brilliant question! What is metal?
0:01:22 > 0:01:26We use metal things all the time but what is it?
0:01:26 > 0:01:29Come to my lab and we'll do some experiments to investigate.
0:01:29 > 0:01:32- BOTH:- See you soon, Nina. Bye!
0:01:32 > 0:01:36I'm going to need some help to answer this. I know who to ask.
0:01:36 > 0:01:39OK, Neurons, time to get to work.
0:01:39 > 0:01:43BUZZING AND ZAPPING
0:01:55 > 0:01:58- ALL:- Neurons at the ready, Nina.
0:01:58 > 0:02:01OK, today's question is what is metal?
0:02:01 > 0:02:05Which Neuron will be most useful in helping us find the answer?
0:02:05 > 0:02:07- ALL SHOUT:- Me!
0:02:07 > 0:02:10Will it be fabulous Felix?
0:02:10 > 0:02:14I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.
0:02:14 > 0:02:15Will it be beautiful Belle?
0:02:15 > 0:02:20I send messages to brain from ear. If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.
0:02:20 > 0:02:22Will it be lovely Luke?
0:02:22 > 0:02:24For looking and seeing, day or night,
0:02:24 > 0:02:27I'll help you with your sense of sight.
0:02:27 > 0:02:29Will it be awesome Ollie?
0:02:29 > 0:02:32If it's pongy or whiffy but you can't tell,
0:02:32 > 0:02:36- my messages help your sense of smell. - Or will it be baby Bud?
0:02:36 > 0:02:40Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat!
0:02:45 > 0:02:47- It's Luke.- Yes!
0:02:47 > 0:02:50- OTHER NEURONS:- Go, Luke! Go, Luke!
0:02:50 > 0:02:55Go, Luke! Go, Luke! Go, Luke! Go, Luke! Go, Luke!
0:02:55 > 0:02:59Cool, Nina. I'll be looking out to help you!
0:02:59 > 0:03:01Today's question is what is metal?
0:03:01 > 0:03:06Metal is something we can see, so Luke, our seeing Neuron, will help.
0:03:06 > 0:03:10I need to get my lab ready before the experimenters arrive.
0:03:12 > 0:03:16Felix likes walking his dog. His friend, Cameron, loves cars.
0:03:16 > 0:03:19But they both want to find out what metal is.
0:03:19 > 0:03:23So today, for one day only, Felix and Cameron become -
0:03:23 > 0:03:25the experimenters!
0:03:27 > 0:03:28BOTH: Hi, Nina.
0:03:28 > 0:03:31Welcome to my lab. Come in.
0:03:31 > 0:03:33Thanks for coming down.
0:03:33 > 0:03:36So your question is what is metal?
0:03:36 > 0:03:39A great question. Why do you want to know?
0:03:39 > 0:03:42We were told that lots of things are made of metal.
0:03:42 > 0:03:47Like bikes and coins and toys.
0:03:47 > 0:03:50But we don't know what metal is.
0:03:50 > 0:03:52Well, I think to find out more
0:03:52 > 0:03:55we need a closer look at some metal.
0:03:55 > 0:03:58For our first experiment we'll use our senses.
0:03:58 > 0:04:02NEURONS: Woo-hoo! A senses experiment! We're ready, Nina!
0:04:02 > 0:04:05Here are some things that are made of metal
0:04:05 > 0:04:08and some that are made of plastic.
0:04:08 > 0:04:11Do you think you could tell just by looking at them
0:04:11 > 0:04:13which ones are metal?
0:04:13 > 0:04:14BOTH: That one...
0:04:14 > 0:04:16these ones,
0:04:16 > 0:04:19that one and that one.
0:04:19 > 0:04:23They look like metal because they're shiny and you're right -
0:04:23 > 0:04:27they are metal. Now, let's see what they feel like.
0:04:27 > 0:04:28Pick some of them up.
0:04:28 > 0:04:33This one feels quite light and this one's a wee bit heavier.
0:04:33 > 0:04:36FELIX: The metal objects feel very different
0:04:36 > 0:04:38to the plastic ones.
0:04:38 > 0:04:43Let me just have a little feel here. Ah, yeah! So the metal things
0:04:43 > 0:04:46are much heavier than the plastic things, aren't they?
0:04:46 > 0:04:49Metal and plastic are quite hard, too,
0:04:49 > 0:04:54but metal is often much stronger. In fact, if I try to break
0:04:54 > 0:04:56this metal fork...
0:04:57 > 0:04:58SHE CHUCKLES
0:04:58 > 0:05:02..I can't! But if I do the same with the plastic fork...
0:05:02 > 0:05:04- SNAP! - Oh!
0:05:04 > 0:05:08..it breaks really easily. So by looking and feeling
0:05:08 > 0:05:11we've worked out which ones are metal
0:05:11 > 0:05:16and we also found out that metal is usually heavy, hard and strong.
0:05:16 > 0:05:19Come on, let's get on to the next experiment.
0:05:21 > 0:05:24There different types of metal in the world
0:05:24 > 0:05:26and I have a few of them here.
0:05:26 > 0:05:28This is iron,
0:05:28 > 0:05:29this is copper,
0:05:29 > 0:05:33and this plasticky looking one is called sodium.
0:05:33 > 0:05:36They don't just look different from one another,
0:05:36 > 0:05:39let me show you what happens
0:05:39 > 0:05:43if I put some copper into this water, here.
0:05:45 > 0:05:50Ha-ha! The water hasn't changed the copper at all.
0:05:50 > 0:05:52It's why pennies are made from copper.
0:05:52 > 0:05:56If you get them wet by mistake, it doesn't matter.
0:05:56 > 0:06:00OK, now I'm going to put the iron into the water.
0:06:04 > 0:06:06Now what can you see happening?
0:06:06 > 0:06:09- Nothing.- It looks like nothing's happening
0:06:09 > 0:06:13but if you left the iron in there for a long time
0:06:13 > 0:06:18the water and the air around it would make it go rusty, like this.
0:06:18 > 0:06:20Look!
0:06:20 > 0:06:23LUKE: It's a different colour and everything!
0:06:23 > 0:06:26OK, on to the final metal.
0:06:26 > 0:06:29This one is the sodium
0:06:29 > 0:06:32and I promise something'll happen this time.
0:06:32 > 0:06:36It's why we're wearing safety goggles, I've got gloves on and you
0:06:36 > 0:06:37are standing well back.
0:06:37 > 0:06:39Here we go.
0:06:44 > 0:06:46FIZZING
0:06:46 > 0:06:48POP!
0:06:48 > 0:06:51BUD: Wow! Look at that!
0:06:53 > 0:06:55P-POP!
0:06:55 > 0:06:57Ho-ho ho-ho!
0:06:57 > 0:07:03- Oh, the water made the sodium react a lot, didn't it?- Yes.- Yes!
0:07:03 > 0:07:06We've found out there are lots of different metals in the world
0:07:06 > 0:07:08and they don't just look different,
0:07:08 > 0:07:10they behave differently, too!
0:07:10 > 0:07:14So why don't we do a bit of detective work outside?
0:07:20 > 0:07:23BELLE: Hmm? Where do you think we're going today?
0:07:23 > 0:07:27- FELIX:- Nina didn't really say. She said, "Outside."
0:07:27 > 0:07:28It could be anywhere.
0:07:28 > 0:07:34- BUD:- Ha-ha-ha! No, it couldn't, Felix! It couldn't be INSIDE!
0:07:34 > 0:07:37Oh-ho! Very funny, little Bud!
0:07:38 > 0:07:39OK, experimenters,
0:07:39 > 0:07:43we've come outside to hunt for things that are made of metal.
0:07:43 > 0:07:47To help us I've got this! It's a metal detector and it beeps
0:07:47 > 0:07:52when it detects metal. I just need something to test it on. Any ideas?
0:07:52 > 0:07:54The Science Centre, Nina.
0:07:54 > 0:07:57Of course! Oh, the Science Centre!
0:07:57 > 0:08:01Well, it looks like it's made of metal. Let's test it.
0:08:01 > 0:08:02BEEPING
0:08:02 > 0:08:05Beep! It's metal!
0:08:05 > 0:08:08- BEEP! - Oh-ho-ho! Brilliant!
0:08:08 > 0:08:10Let's see what else we can find.
0:08:12 > 0:08:15- What about my car? - BEEP!
0:08:15 > 0:08:17- BOTH: It's metal!- Hee-hee! - BEEP!
0:08:19 > 0:08:22- What about this bridge? - It looks like metal.
0:08:22 > 0:08:23BEEP!
0:08:23 > 0:08:26- BELLE AND BUD:- Beep! Ha-ha-ha!
0:08:33 > 0:08:35- BEEP! - Oh-ho-ho! Wow!
0:08:35 > 0:08:39We've found some big things that set off the metal detector.
0:08:39 > 0:08:44There was the Science Centre, my car, the bridge and this ship.
0:08:44 > 0:08:47And most of them are made from something called steel.
0:08:47 > 0:08:50I thought it was bad to steal, Nina?
0:08:50 > 0:08:53It is, Bud, but this is a different type of steel.
0:08:53 > 0:08:57The steel in this ship is mostly made from iron -
0:08:57 > 0:09:01the metal in the lab that was rusty. Do you remember?
0:09:01 > 0:09:04- Yes, it was brown and dirty looking. - Yes.
0:09:04 > 0:09:07Iron goes rusty when it's in water and air for a long time.
0:09:07 > 0:09:11When it's rusty, it's not a strong any more.
0:09:11 > 0:09:15So we mix iron with something else to stop it going rusty
0:09:15 > 0:09:17and this metal mixture is steel.
0:09:17 > 0:09:21Steel is much stronger and lasts a lot longer than iron
0:09:21 > 0:09:25so it's used to make things like cars, bridges and ships.
0:09:25 > 0:09:30Right, guys, we need to go back to the lab for a final experiment.
0:09:32 > 0:09:36So here are four sticks and they're all made of something different.
0:09:36 > 0:09:41This one's copper. Do you remember? Is copper metal?
0:09:41 > 0:09:43- Yes, it's metal.- Yes,
0:09:43 > 0:09:45copper's a metal, pennies are made from it.
0:09:45 > 0:09:47And this is steel.
0:09:47 > 0:09:51We know that steel is metal mixed with other things.
0:09:51 > 0:09:54What about the wood and the plastic? Are they metal?
0:09:54 > 0:09:55No!
0:09:55 > 0:10:00That's right. Wood and plastic aren't metal at all. So you'll have
0:10:00 > 0:10:03two sticks each. Cameron, you can try those.
0:10:03 > 0:10:06And, Felix, you can have this one. As you can see,
0:10:06 > 0:10:10one our sticks there's something stuck to them.
0:10:10 > 0:10:14This little thing is a thermometer and it's very clever
0:10:14 > 0:10:18because it changes colour when it warms up. Look at this.
0:10:22 > 0:10:24Is it changing colour?
0:10:24 > 0:10:25Yes.
0:10:25 > 0:10:27My forehead is quite warm
0:10:27 > 0:10:30so the thermometer's changed colour.
0:10:30 > 0:10:33So for this experiment you'll put the sticks
0:10:33 > 0:10:37into this box and see if the thermometer changes colour.
0:10:37 > 0:10:39But the box has got hot water in it
0:10:39 > 0:10:42so pop your heatproof gloves on.
0:10:42 > 0:10:46That's very wise, Nina. Hot water can burn, you know.
0:10:46 > 0:10:48OK. So pick up your sticks.
0:10:48 > 0:10:50Thermometers at the top.
0:10:51 > 0:10:53And when I say "go",
0:10:53 > 0:10:57you're going to put the other end in the hot water and we'll see
0:10:57 > 0:11:01which thermometer changes colour first. OK, are you ready? Set? Go!
0:11:08 > 0:11:11Good. So watch carefully.
0:11:15 > 0:11:17LUKE: Some are changing colour.
0:11:17 > 0:11:21They are changing colour, Luke. The first one to change
0:11:21 > 0:11:26is the copper and then the steel changed.
0:11:26 > 0:11:31- What about the wood and the plastic? Have they changed?- BOYS: No.
0:11:31 > 0:11:34No, they've not! They haven't changed at all.
0:11:34 > 0:11:38This experiment has shown us that metals are special
0:11:38 > 0:11:42because they're very good at taking in heat and spreading it.
0:11:42 > 0:11:47The sticks of copper and metal took heat from the water, down here,
0:11:47 > 0:11:51and it climbed all the way up to the top really quickly.
0:11:51 > 0:11:53That's why radiators in houses
0:11:53 > 0:11:57and the pans that we heat food in are made of metal.
0:12:00 > 0:12:06So your question was, what is metal? And I think we've answered it.
0:12:06 > 0:12:10First we discovered that there are lots of different types of metal
0:12:10 > 0:12:13and some metals don't change in water or air
0:12:13 > 0:12:15and can last a really long time.
0:12:15 > 0:12:19Others are mixed with other things to make them stronger.
0:12:19 > 0:12:23It's often these metal mixtures that are the strongest of all.
0:12:23 > 0:12:27Finally, all metals are really good at taking and spreading heat.
0:12:27 > 0:12:32That's why they're great for making radiators and pots and pans.
0:12:32 > 0:12:34Has that answered your question?
0:12:34 > 0:12:37BOYS: Thanks, Nina. Bye.
0:12:37 > 0:12:38Bye!
0:12:43 > 0:12:47If you want to know more about the science that's around us,
0:12:47 > 0:12:50go to the Nina section on the CBeebies' website. Have fun!
0:12:51 > 0:12:52Lab coat on, Nina?
0:12:52 > 0:12:54Lab coat on, Ollie.
0:12:54 > 0:12:56Safety gloves on, Nina?
0:12:56 > 0:12:58Safety gloves on, Felix.
0:12:58 > 0:13:00Don't forget your goggles, Nina.
0:13:00 > 0:13:04Goggles are on, Luke. I think we're ready!
0:13:05 > 0:13:07# We do experiments in the lab
0:13:07 > 0:13:11- # In the lab! - Shooby-dooby, in the lab
0:13:11 > 0:13:13# Bubbling experiments in the lab
0:13:13 > 0:13:17# Go, Nina, in the lab
0:13:17 > 0:13:20# Fizzing and popping Steam and smoke
0:13:20 > 0:13:23# We need protection Don't we, folks?
0:13:23 > 0:13:27# We always put our safety first
0:13:27 > 0:13:29# Shooby-dooby, dooby-dooby
0:13:29 > 0:13:31# We do experiments in the lab
0:13:31 > 0:13:34# Go, Nina! #
0:13:34 > 0:13:36It's been a marvellous day.
0:13:36 > 0:13:39I've been very busy feeling all that metal.
0:13:39 > 0:13:42Ah, it's been such a great day, man!
0:13:42 > 0:13:46Those metals did such different things in the water.
0:13:46 > 0:13:48I've had a fabby day!
0:13:48 > 0:13:50We went looking for metal
0:13:50 > 0:13:53and saw bridges, and buildings
0:13:53 > 0:13:55and a big ship!
0:13:55 > 0:13:57I really enjoyed myself today.
0:13:57 > 0:14:01It was amazing how fast the metal sticks warmed up.
0:14:01 > 0:14:04Our day's been bursting with experiments.
0:14:04 > 0:14:07I hope you've enjoyed it. See you soon. Bye!
0:14:07 > 0:14:09NEURONS: Bye!
