0:00:56 > 0:01:02Oh, hello! My last experiment was messy so I'm cleaning up the lab.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04Oh, itchy nose!

0:01:04 > 0:01:08Oh no! Bubbly nose! Silly me!

0:01:09 > 0:01:11BEEP! BEEP!

0:01:11 > 0:01:16I hear a beep, I see a flash. I wonder what they're going to ask.

0:01:19 > 0:01:23- Hi Nina!- Hi, guys.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26- We've got a question for you. - Why do bubbles burst?

0:01:26 > 0:01:30A brilliant question! Why do bubbles burst?

0:01:30 > 0:01:33I just had a few bubbles burst on the end of my nose.

0:01:33 > 0:01:38I'm not sure why. Come to the lab and we'll do some experiments.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41BOTH: See you soon, Nina. Bye!

0:01:41 > 0:01:45Bye! I'm going to need help to answer this one

0:01:45 > 0:01:47and I know just who to ask.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50OK, neurons. Time to get to work!

0:02:05 > 0:02:07ALL: Neurons at the ready, Nina.

0:02:09 > 0:02:13OK. Today's question is, why do bubbles burst?

0:02:13 > 0:02:16Which Neuron will be most useful to help find the answer?

0:02:16 > 0:02:19ALL: Me! Me! Me! Oh, me!

0:02:19 > 0:02:22Will it be fabulous Felix?

0:02:22 > 0:02:26I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28Will it be beautiful Belle?

0:02:28 > 0:02:33I send messages to brain from ear. If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.

0:02:33 > 0:02:34Will it be lovely Luke?

0:02:34 > 0:02:37For looking and seeing, day or night,

0:02:37 > 0:02:39I'll help you with your sense of sight.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41Will it be awesome Ollie?

0:02:41 > 0:02:43If it's pongy or whiffy but you can't tell,

0:02:43 > 0:02:47- my messages help your sense of smell. - Or will it be baby Bud?

0:02:47 > 0:02:53Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat!

0:02:57 > 0:03:00- It's Luke!- Yes!

0:03:00 > 0:03:06Go, Luke! Go, Luke! Go, Luke!

0:03:06 > 0:03:10Cool, Nina. I'll be looking out to help ya!

0:03:10 > 0:03:14Today's question is why do bubbles burst?

0:03:14 > 0:03:17To see bubbbles burst we use our sense of sight.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20Luke will be helping me today but stand by neurons

0:03:20 > 0:03:22I may need help from all of you.

0:03:22 > 0:03:26I need to get the lab ready before the experimenters arrive.

0:03:29 > 0:03:33Liam likes mountain biking. His friend Eve loves football.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36They want to find out why bubbles burst.

0:03:36 > 0:03:41Today, Liam and Eve become the experimenters!

0:03:44 > 0:03:47- Hi, guys!- Hi, Nina!

0:03:47 > 0:03:49Welcome. Come in.

0:03:49 > 0:03:51It's lovely to see you both.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54So your question is why do bubbles burst?

0:03:54 > 0:03:57- But why do you want to know? - Cos they're fun!

0:03:57 > 0:04:02- I like when it goes up in the air. - They burst straight away. Why?

0:04:02 > 0:04:05Blowing bubbles is great fun but you're right.

0:04:05 > 0:04:10Sometimes they burst too soon. We need to investigate.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13We're going to use our senses.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17ALL: Whoo-hoo! A senses experiment! We're ready, Nina!

0:04:17 > 0:04:21It's time to get experimenting with some bubbles.

0:04:21 > 0:04:26You've got some bubble mixture. Let's make losts of bubbles!

0:04:44 > 0:04:46So, what's happening when you blow bubbles?

0:04:46 > 0:04:50- They're coming out of the circles. - Then what happens?

0:04:50 > 0:04:53- They burst.- Yeah.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55- Do you notice- when- they burst?

0:04:55 > 0:04:58When they touch something.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01The bubbles burst if they touch the desk or each other.

0:05:01 > 0:05:05Sometimes they just burst in the air. This has shown us

0:05:05 > 0:05:09that bubbles float in the air and if they touch something they burst.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12Sometimes they burst on their own.

0:05:12 > 0:05:14It's time for another experiement.

0:05:17 > 0:05:21We need to find what a bubble actually is.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24I'll try to make a bubble using just water.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27- Do you think it'll work? - BOTH: No.

0:05:27 > 0:05:29Neither do I!

0:05:29 > 0:05:32- It's just pouring off, Nina! - You're right, Luke.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36I can't blow a bubble cos there's nothing left to blow.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39Aw! No bubbles!

0:05:39 > 0:05:42Let me dip it into the bubble mixture...

0:05:45 > 0:05:51Ooh! There's a thin film over the hoop.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54I can see through it but there's something there.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57If I blow...

0:05:58 > 0:06:01It makes lots of bubbles this time!

0:06:01 > 0:06:03But why does this happen?

0:06:03 > 0:06:10We need to do another experiment. I'll put some water on this board.

0:06:12 > 0:06:14I'll try to spread it out.

0:06:14 > 0:06:18It's not spreading, Nina.

0:06:18 > 0:06:21LUKE: The water doesn't seem to be spreading, Nina.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24You're right, Luke. The water won't spread evenly.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27Just making little puddles.

0:06:27 > 0:06:32Let me try adding a little bit of washing-up liquid.

0:06:37 > 0:06:38Oh! Just one drop.

0:06:42 > 0:06:43It's spreading, Nina.

0:06:43 > 0:06:48Yes, by adding washing-up liquid, I've changed how the water behaves.

0:06:48 > 0:06:53It's can now spread and stretch out across the board.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55This is what happens with bubbles.

0:06:55 > 0:07:01By adding another ingredient, like washing-up liquid,

0:07:01 > 0:07:03you can change the way water behaves

0:07:03 > 0:07:06allowing it to stretch across the bubble hoop

0:07:06 > 0:07:10and you can make bubble shapes like this.

0:07:10 > 0:07:14These experiments have told us a lot about bubbles

0:07:14 > 0:07:17but to answer why bubbles burst,

0:07:17 > 0:07:21we need to go somewhere with even more water.

0:07:21 > 0:07:23Let's go, experimenters!

0:07:27 > 0:07:33Oh, goody! I love this bit. I wonder where Nina is taking us.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36Nina said it's a place with water.

0:07:36 > 0:07:38I hope it's a big, noisy waterfall.

0:07:38 > 0:07:42Sharpen your senses, neurons. It looks like we're here.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45Look! There's the pond.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50Aw, a beautiful pond.

0:07:50 > 0:07:55Perfect, this machine makes lots and lots of bubbles.

0:07:55 > 0:08:01I've made sure the bubble mixture won't harm the plants and animals.

0:08:01 > 0:08:05We're going to watch carefully to see where the bubbles land

0:08:05 > 0:08:08- and what happens. Are you ready? - Yes!

0:08:08 > 0:08:11Eyes wide open. Ready and waiting to watch!

0:08:49 > 0:08:52Everybody sounds so happy!

0:08:52 > 0:08:56Birds singing, children laughing, lovely.

0:08:56 > 0:08:59I've never seen so many bubbles!

0:09:03 > 0:09:04Try and catch them!

0:09:04 > 0:09:06Oh, wow!

0:09:08 > 0:09:14I wonder if the bubbles will land on Nina. It feels tickly.

0:09:16 > 0:09:20OK, what did you notice about the bubbles when they landed?

0:09:20 > 0:09:22They burst and popped.

0:09:22 > 0:09:26When the bubbles landed on the fence, the trees,

0:09:26 > 0:09:30leaves or your hands, they popped and burst right away.

0:09:30 > 0:09:33But what happened when they landed on the pond?

0:09:33 > 0:09:35They didn't pop and lasted longer.

0:09:35 > 0:09:39What's the difference between the pond and the other places?

0:09:39 > 0:09:42The pond's wet and the other places are dry.

0:09:42 > 0:09:46That's right. The pond is wet and the other places are dry.

0:09:46 > 0:09:50So, this has shown us bubbles are more likely to pop

0:09:50 > 0:09:52when they land on something dry,

0:09:52 > 0:09:56and they last much longer when they land on something wet.

0:09:56 > 0:10:00But, eventually, they still burst. Why is that?

0:10:00 > 0:10:03I think we need to explore further. Let's go back to the lab

0:10:03 > 0:10:06- and do another experiment.- YEAH!

0:10:09 > 0:10:12So, your question was, why do bubbles burst?

0:10:12 > 0:10:16So far, we've discovered that bubbles are made of water

0:10:16 > 0:10:19mixed with something like washing-up liquid.

0:10:19 > 0:10:23This changes the water and makes it thin and stretchy.

0:10:23 > 0:10:27We also know bubbles last longer when they touch something wet.

0:10:27 > 0:10:31We still don't know why bubbles burst so let's get experimenting!

0:10:31 > 0:10:37OK, I'm going to give you each some of the same bubble mixture.

0:10:37 > 0:10:42There we go, one for you.

0:10:42 > 0:10:46Mm, that bubble mixture smells quite soapy.

0:10:46 > 0:10:51And as you can see, Eve, you are standing next to the fan

0:10:51 > 0:10:53and Liam, you've got a hairdryer.

0:10:53 > 0:10:58Ooh, a hairdryer AND a fan. This could be noisy.

0:10:58 > 0:11:04So load up your bubble hoop. Hold it in front of the fan or hairdryer

0:11:04 > 0:11:09and watch carefully what happens when I turn them on. Here we go.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16Oh!

0:11:16 > 0:11:18Oh! That's amazing!

0:11:18 > 0:11:22They're making all those bubbles without even blowing!

0:11:22 > 0:11:26Oh, wow, Eve, those bubbles just keep going!

0:11:28 > 0:11:29Oh, nearly!

0:11:29 > 0:11:34Your bubbles aren't lasting very long, are they, Liam?

0:11:34 > 0:11:37OK, guys.

0:11:37 > 0:11:38Oh, well done, guys!

0:11:38 > 0:11:42So, what did you notice about your bubbles?

0:11:42 > 0:11:44Mine didn't last very long.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47And Eve's did.

0:11:47 > 0:11:51Yeah and what's the difference between the air from the fan

0:11:51 > 0:11:54- and the hairdryer?- My one's warm

0:11:54 > 0:11:56and Eve's is quite cold.

0:11:56 > 0:12:00Yeah. A hairdryer blasts warm air to dry wet hair.

0:12:00 > 0:12:04But in this experiment, the hairdryer is drying up wet bubbles.

0:12:04 > 0:12:08And the fan has cool air so it doesn't dry up the bubbles

0:12:08 > 0:12:10as quickly so last much longer.

0:12:13 > 0:12:16Your question was, why do bubbles burst?

0:12:16 > 0:12:20I think we've answered it. We discovered that bubbles burst

0:12:20 > 0:12:23because they're made of water and dry up.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26This happens when they touch dry things or dry in the air.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29I hope that answers your question.

0:12:29 > 0:12:31Yes. Thanks, Nina, bye!

0:12:31 > 0:12:33Bye, guys! Thanks!

0:12:37 > 0:12:41If you want to know more about the science around us,

0:12:41 > 0:12:45go to the CBeebies website. Have fun!

0:12:49 > 0:12:50Lab coat on, Nina?

0:12:50 > 0:12:52Lab coat on, Ollie.

0:12:52 > 0:12:53Safety gloves on, Nina?

0:12:53 > 0:12:55Safety gloves on, Felix.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58Don't forget your goggles, Nina.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01Goggles are on, Luke. I think we're ready!

0:13:03 > 0:13:05# We do experiments in the lab

0:13:05 > 0:13:09- # In the lab! - Shooby-dooby, in the lab

0:13:09 > 0:13:11# Bubbling experiments in the lab

0:13:11 > 0:13:12# In the lab!

0:13:12 > 0:13:14# Go, Nina, in the lab

0:13:14 > 0:13:18# Fizzing and popping Steam and smoke

0:13:18 > 0:13:20# We need protection Don't we, folks?

0:13:20 > 0:13:25# We always put our safety first

0:13:25 > 0:13:27# Shooby-dooby, dooby-dooby

0:13:27 > 0:13:29# We do experiments in the lab

0:13:29 > 0:13:30# In the lab!

0:13:30 > 0:13:31# Go, Nina! #

0:13:31 > 0:13:33It's been a marvellous day.

0:13:33 > 0:13:37All those tickly bubbles, flying about.

0:13:37 > 0:13:39I really enjoyed myself today.

0:13:39 > 0:13:42Sniffing all that fresh air at the duck pond.

0:13:42 > 0:13:45I've had a brilliant day.

0:13:45 > 0:13:48What a racket from the fan and the hairdryer!

0:13:48 > 0:13:50I've had a fabby day!

0:13:50 > 0:13:55Full of big, blowy, bubbly bubbles!

0:13:55 > 0:13:59Our day's been bursting with sensational experiments.

0:13:59 > 0:14:00I hope you enjoyed it. Bye!

0:14:00 > 0:14:03ALL: Bye!
