0:00:05 > 0:00:07Time to get my ninja on.
0:00:07 > 0:00:08And my clothes.
0:00:24 > 0:00:27- Hi, Ricky. - Whoa, who are you?
0:00:27 > 0:00:29It's me, man. Keith Haring.
0:00:29 > 0:00:30I was an American artist
0:00:30 > 0:00:33and my earliest work was graffiti in subways.
0:00:33 > 0:00:35Here's one of my famous pictures.
0:00:35 > 0:00:38I became known for these bold figures and messages of love
0:00:38 > 0:00:41and unity for all humanity.
0:00:41 > 0:00:43Well, Keith, I'm going to unite your work
0:00:43 > 0:00:45with something a little less human.
0:00:45 > 0:00:47Right on, man.
0:00:47 > 0:00:51So, I'm going to get myself some card and a pen from here.
0:00:51 > 0:00:54And I'm going to draw the separate limbs and parts of an alien.
0:00:54 > 0:00:56So, here's the head.
0:00:56 > 0:00:59With three antennae.
0:00:59 > 0:01:01Nice big, round body.
0:01:04 > 0:01:06How many legs should we have?
0:01:06 > 0:01:07Three legs?
0:01:07 > 0:01:08Well, he is an alien.
0:01:09 > 0:01:10There you go.
0:01:10 > 0:01:12Now, I'll cut that out.
0:01:12 > 0:01:14Remember to be careful when using scissors,
0:01:14 > 0:01:16or get a sensible adult to help you.
0:01:16 > 0:01:19I wonder if having three legs would make you better at football?
0:01:19 > 0:01:22It probably wouldn't make you better at dancing.
0:01:24 > 0:01:27I've kept my shapes quite boxy and bold
0:01:27 > 0:01:29as this is of course inspired by Keith,
0:01:29 > 0:01:33but you can do whatever you want with yours.
0:01:33 > 0:01:34There we go.
0:01:34 > 0:01:37And now I'm going to attach all the limbs using these split pins.
0:01:37 > 0:01:39But first, I need to make some holes.
0:01:39 > 0:01:40Use some modelling clay
0:01:40 > 0:01:43and a pencil to push holes in all the alien's body parts.
0:01:48 > 0:01:51And punching holes just makes it easier to get your split pins in.
0:01:51 > 0:01:53So, slide them through.
0:01:53 > 0:01:55And open them up on the back.
0:01:56 > 0:01:59Repeat this until all the body parts are attached.
0:02:02 > 0:02:03Because they are split pins
0:02:03 > 0:02:08it means that you can move him round in lots of different, fun poses.
0:02:08 > 0:02:12Right, I'm going to get some green paper and lay it down.
0:02:12 > 0:02:14Then, I'm going to draw around him.
0:02:14 > 0:02:17Because the card is raised slightly off the paper,
0:02:17 > 0:02:19it's easier to draw around the alien.
0:02:22 > 0:02:24Right, I'm going to cut him out.
0:02:24 > 0:02:27I'm just cutting out the overall shape of him
0:02:27 > 0:02:30and I'm going to go back and pick up these little recesses here.
0:02:35 > 0:02:37Cool. Little green man looking good.
0:02:37 > 0:02:41Now, I'm going to do another one on some blue paper.
0:02:41 > 0:02:42Just going to make a new pose.
0:02:42 > 0:02:44Maybe two legs down one leg up.
0:02:46 > 0:02:49You might find it easier to Sticky Tack down your alien
0:02:49 > 0:02:51when you draw around him to stop him from moving.
0:02:55 > 0:02:57There we are.
0:02:57 > 0:02:58Another alien figure.
0:02:58 > 0:03:00Right, I could do with a couple more of these.
0:03:00 > 0:03:02Maybe in some more colours.
0:03:02 > 0:03:05So, I ninja myself some new ones.
0:03:05 > 0:03:08I've got a lovely yellow one and a pink one too.
0:03:08 > 0:03:10So, going to get myself a bit of backing paper...
0:03:12 > 0:03:15..and start positioning them in a way that I like.
0:03:16 > 0:03:18I kind of think that's a good look.
0:03:18 > 0:03:20Then I'm going to glue stick them down.
0:03:20 > 0:03:22All these cool poses we've made
0:03:22 > 0:03:26really make the picture look like it's full of energy.
0:03:26 > 0:03:29Having a party that's truly out of this world.
0:03:29 > 0:03:30Once they're all stuck down,
0:03:30 > 0:03:33draw around the aliens in black pen to make them stand out.
0:03:37 > 0:03:39Right, so there we are. Look at these lot.
0:03:39 > 0:03:42Nice and bright, black lines really making them pop out.
0:03:42 > 0:03:44But they're missing that final Keith Haring touch.
0:03:44 > 0:03:48And that's little lines here and there to accent the movement.
0:03:52 > 0:03:53There we are.
0:03:53 > 0:03:55Now, all it needs is a frame.
0:03:55 > 0:03:57Isn't that great?
0:03:57 > 0:03:59Little green men and women.
0:03:59 > 0:04:02Well, and blue ones and pink ones and yellow ones.
0:04:02 > 0:04:05Wow, Rick. Those people are out of this world.
0:04:05 > 0:04:06Literally.
0:04:09 > 0:04:11Here's a quick art tip.
0:04:11 > 0:04:13How to add speech to your cartoon doodles.
0:04:13 > 0:04:16So, the first stage is working out what your characters
0:04:16 > 0:04:17are going to say and then leaving space,
0:04:17 > 0:04:19so you can write it in afterwards.
0:04:19 > 0:04:21So, I've drawn these guys here.
0:04:21 > 0:04:22Little one of me getting my ninja on.
0:04:22 > 0:04:25And I've left space at the top and down here where I want to put it.
0:04:25 > 0:04:27Then when I come to actually write the text
0:04:27 > 0:04:31I'm going to do it in capitals, so it's nice and bold and easy to read.
0:04:34 > 0:04:36And over here, I'm going to write...
0:04:38 > 0:04:41The next stage is to draw a circle round your text
0:04:41 > 0:04:43and that just borders it off nicely.
0:04:43 > 0:04:45And then a little tail to indicate who's speaking.
0:04:45 > 0:04:48Now, on this one over here I'm shouting,
0:04:48 > 0:04:51so I'm going to use a zigzag border to give it more energy.
0:04:54 > 0:04:56And finally, you can enhance your drawings
0:04:56 > 0:04:59by using text to create sound effects.
0:04:59 > 0:05:01So, I'm going to put a nice big ka-pow up here.
0:05:02 > 0:05:05In this one I'm using bubble writing.
0:05:05 > 0:05:06There we go.
0:05:08 > 0:05:09It's a quick art tip.
0:05:21 > 0:05:24Ricky, what can you do with these?
0:05:24 > 0:05:25What's your name, buddy?
0:05:25 > 0:05:27- I'm Cory.- Hi, Cory.
0:05:27 > 0:05:28Where are you from?
0:05:28 > 0:05:29I'm from Cardiff.
0:05:29 > 0:05:31Cardiff, yeah.
0:05:31 > 0:05:32So, what have you got for me today?
0:05:32 > 0:05:34Can you make some art with straws?
0:05:34 > 0:05:36Make something with straws? I can do better than that.
0:05:36 > 0:05:38I can make you a cartoon superhero.
0:05:38 > 0:05:40I'll just get my bits.
0:05:40 > 0:05:41Here we go.
0:05:41 > 0:05:45Got myself some Sellotape, some paper and card.
0:05:45 > 0:05:47Coloured pens and scissors.
0:05:47 > 0:05:50And of course a special straw.
0:05:50 > 0:05:52What I'm going to do to begin with,
0:05:52 > 0:05:55is I'm going to roll the paper round the end of the straw,
0:05:55 > 0:05:56just to get a tube.
0:05:57 > 0:05:58Here we go.
0:06:00 > 0:06:04I'm going to sticky tape that together.
0:06:04 > 0:06:05Here we are.
0:06:05 > 0:06:08Now, I'm going to fold over the ends and then tape that down.
0:06:14 > 0:06:16Put that to one side.
0:06:16 > 0:06:18Now, I'm going to draw myself a superhero.
0:06:18 > 0:06:21What superpowers would you have, Cory?
0:06:21 > 0:06:22Super-strength.
0:06:22 > 0:06:23Super-strength.
0:06:23 > 0:06:25Nice one.
0:06:25 > 0:06:26Good choice.
0:06:27 > 0:06:29This is my superhero.
0:06:29 > 0:06:32I'd love to see your design for Super Strongman.
0:06:32 > 0:06:35Why do superheroes always wear their pants over their trousers?
0:06:35 > 0:06:38I think it's just the fashion.
0:06:38 > 0:06:39Do the legs.
0:06:39 > 0:06:41There we go.
0:06:41 > 0:06:42And a cape.
0:06:43 > 0:06:45And I'm going to put the little emblem in the middle.
0:06:45 > 0:06:48I think he's going to be called Rad-Man.
0:06:51 > 0:06:53Six-pack.
0:06:53 > 0:06:55Red, blue and yellow are good hero colours, aren't they?
0:06:55 > 0:06:57- Yep.- Let's get colouring them in.
0:06:59 > 0:07:03When I was younger, I had to put up with cheaper superheroes.
0:07:03 > 0:07:06Such as Budget Boy.
0:07:06 > 0:07:09His special power was getting money off things.
0:07:11 > 0:07:15But don't worry, this superhero isn't going to be cheap,
0:07:15 > 0:07:17he's going to be top of the range.
0:07:17 > 0:07:19What colour should his bottoms be?
0:07:19 > 0:07:20Erm... Blue.
0:07:20 > 0:07:22Sounds good.
0:07:27 > 0:07:29There we go.
0:07:29 > 0:07:31What colour should his pants be?
0:07:31 > 0:07:34Erm... Black, maybe.
0:07:34 > 0:07:36Black. Yep. Black pants.
0:07:38 > 0:07:41When you have a go, you can mix up the colours.
0:07:41 > 0:07:43Shall we give him a yellow cape?
0:07:43 > 0:07:44- Yeah.- Yeah.
0:07:44 > 0:07:45Here. We can see him coming then.
0:07:48 > 0:07:50Then I'm going to do the "Rad" bit here.
0:07:53 > 0:07:54Make some yellow booties.
0:07:56 > 0:07:59And I think I going to do his face pink,
0:07:59 > 0:08:02cos I'd be pretty embarrassed if I had my pants on over my trousers.
0:08:05 > 0:08:06OK, I'm going to cut that out.
0:08:09 > 0:08:11And his legs.
0:08:12 > 0:08:15And go round here on his hands, and his head.
0:08:15 > 0:08:16There we go.
0:08:16 > 0:08:20Now, I'm going to stick my little tube that I made to his back.
0:08:20 > 0:08:21More sticky tape.
0:08:25 > 0:08:27There we go.
0:08:27 > 0:08:29Put the straw in.
0:08:29 > 0:08:30All right.
0:08:30 > 0:08:32Do you want to see him?
0:08:32 > 0:08:34Yep.
0:08:34 > 0:08:36What do you think?
0:08:36 > 0:08:37That's awesome.
0:08:37 > 0:08:39He looks good, doesn't he?
0:08:39 > 0:08:40And then check this out.
0:08:47 > 0:08:50Ah, brilliant.
0:08:50 > 0:08:51What do you think of it?
0:08:51 > 0:08:52It's super!
0:08:52 > 0:08:55I'll give it 110%.
0:08:55 > 0:08:57110%?!
0:08:57 > 0:08:58That's not even possible!
0:09:00 > 0:09:03Now, go to the website and get your ninja on.
0:09:06 > 0:09:08Art Ninja!
