0:00:05 > 0:00:08Time to get my ninja on. And my clothes.
0:00:24 > 0:00:27I'm going to make some bookends made of rubber gloves
0:00:27 > 0:00:30and decorated in the style of famous artist Jackson Pollock.
0:00:30 > 0:00:32Here's a Jackson Pollock picture now.
0:00:32 > 0:00:34He fixed his canvas to the floor or wall
0:00:34 > 0:00:37and, using a paintbrush, he threw lines of paint on it.
0:00:37 > 0:00:40This became known as action painting.
0:00:40 > 0:00:42So first, I'm going to make my canvas,
0:00:42 > 0:00:45and in this case that is a cast of a rubber glove,
0:00:45 > 0:00:47so I'm going to start by drawing round a bowl on this
0:00:47 > 0:00:51piece of cardboard. You can use a mug, that's about the same size.
0:00:52 > 0:00:54Now I'm going to cut that out.
0:00:54 > 0:00:57To get my scissors in there, I'm going to make a hole first.
0:00:57 > 0:00:59I'm using sticky tack underneath the card
0:00:59 > 0:01:01to help push the pencil through.
0:01:01 > 0:01:02It makes it easier to cut out.
0:01:09 > 0:01:10Nice big bucket.
0:01:10 > 0:01:13Put the cardboard on top and now here's the tricky bit.
0:01:13 > 0:01:16I'm going to hang an old rubber glove through the hole.
0:01:16 > 0:01:19And I'm going to attach it to the edge of this circle
0:01:19 > 0:01:20with some sticky tape.
0:01:20 > 0:01:22When I say "some," I mean "a lot",
0:01:22 > 0:01:24because this is going to have to hold some weight.
0:01:25 > 0:01:28As this is quite fiddly, you might need some help
0:01:28 > 0:01:30and I recommend working around one bit at a time.
0:01:33 > 0:01:35Rubber gloves tend to be powdery on the inside,
0:01:35 > 0:01:39so wash them out first and it will help the tape stick.
0:01:39 > 0:01:42Right, that's looking good. Now I need to mix up some plaster of Paris.
0:01:42 > 0:01:45You'll need to follow the instructions on your
0:01:45 > 0:01:46plaster of Paris packet
0:01:46 > 0:01:50but, as a guide, it's twice as much plaster to water
0:01:50 > 0:01:52and you always add the powder to the water.
0:01:52 > 0:01:54Might be good to stick on an apron
0:01:54 > 0:01:57because it does tend to go everywhere.
0:01:57 > 0:02:00Make sure you've stirred in all of the lumps.
0:02:00 > 0:02:01It's starting to thicken now.
0:02:01 > 0:02:04Keep stirring until it is smooth and pourable.
0:02:04 > 0:02:05And when it's at that stage,
0:02:05 > 0:02:08you need to act pretty fast, cos it starts to harden.
0:02:14 > 0:02:17Make sure all of it's in, and I've left a little bit of room
0:02:17 > 0:02:21at the top as it expands. And flick the fingers to make sure
0:02:21 > 0:02:22all the bubbles are released,
0:02:22 > 0:02:25and this means you have a nice, solid, strong cast.
0:02:25 > 0:02:28If you're doing this at home, you'll need to wait for it to harden,
0:02:28 > 0:02:30but not me. I'm the Art Ninja.
0:02:33 > 0:02:35Nice and hard.
0:02:35 > 0:02:38Remove the sticky tape to release the cast from the cardboard.
0:02:38 > 0:02:39There we go.
0:02:39 > 0:02:43Now I need to carefully cut down the back of the glove to get my cast out.
0:02:43 > 0:02:46If you're just pulling, it's likely to break it.
0:02:50 > 0:02:52Hey!
0:02:52 > 0:02:55Now I need to decorate it, so I need to get some action painting in.
0:03:00 > 0:03:03Now I'm going to flick it just like Jackson Pollock.
0:03:03 > 0:03:04Let's start with some yellow.
0:03:22 > 0:03:26If you're doing this at home, you'd better put lots of paper down.
0:03:29 > 0:03:30I'll try a few ninja moves.
0:03:30 > 0:03:32Hai, ii-ya!
0:03:32 > 0:03:33Look at that.
0:03:37 > 0:03:40Now let me give you a hand at drawing hands.
0:03:41 > 0:03:43So I'm going to start by drawing the wrist.
0:03:43 > 0:03:46And then I'm going to draw a half circle to give me
0:03:46 > 0:03:47a guide for the palm.
0:03:47 > 0:03:51I'm going to use a pencil as a guide which I can rub out later.
0:03:51 > 0:03:55And then also I'm going to do a couple of lines here to give me
0:03:55 > 0:03:56a guide for the size of the fingers.
0:03:56 > 0:03:59The largest finger is the middle finger
0:03:59 > 0:04:02and they need to be smaller either side, so index and little finger.
0:04:04 > 0:04:07So I'm going to start drawing the fingers in
0:04:07 > 0:04:09and the middle finger is the longest.
0:04:10 > 0:04:15Get smaller towards the little finger and towards the index finger.
0:04:15 > 0:04:18Now to draw the thumb, extend out slightly from the palm
0:04:18 > 0:04:20and then up to the base of the four fingers
0:04:20 > 0:04:22and then curve it back down into the palm.
0:04:22 > 0:04:25OK, I'm just going to draw up the other side of the hand here
0:04:25 > 0:04:27and then at the base of the fingers just below,
0:04:27 > 0:04:29I'm going to draw a line across like a crease in the hand.
0:04:29 > 0:04:34Now you have the basics, practise drawing hands in different poses.
0:04:34 > 0:04:36I'm going to draw a hand in profile.
0:04:36 > 0:04:38Now I'm going to draw a hand pointing.
0:04:43 > 0:04:46There you go. Quick art tip.
0:04:53 > 0:04:57So, you can draw hands, how about making some gloves to put on them?
0:04:59 > 0:05:03The Art Ninja knit-free fingerless gloves.
0:05:03 > 0:05:07So I've got myself an old sticky tape loop. It's all finished.
0:05:07 > 0:05:10And
0:05:10 > 0:05:11ten lolly sticks,
0:05:11 > 0:05:15and I'm going to lay them down just over a finger's width apart.
0:05:17 > 0:05:21Great. Now I'm going to get out some sticky tape,
0:05:21 > 0:05:22and take a good length,
0:05:22 > 0:05:27and I'm going to lay it about a third of the way down the lolly sticks,
0:05:27 > 0:05:32and just make sure all of them are stuck without sticking to the table.
0:05:32 > 0:05:33There we go.
0:05:33 > 0:05:35Turn it over so the sticky side is facing up,
0:05:35 > 0:05:38and I'm going to roll my sticky tape loop across them.
0:05:39 > 0:05:41OK, it's picked it up.
0:05:43 > 0:05:44There we go.
0:05:44 > 0:05:45Perfect.
0:05:45 > 0:05:48So all of these now are equal distance around the
0:05:48 > 0:05:52sticky tape loop, and this will become my loom.
0:05:52 > 0:05:54Cool.
0:05:54 > 0:05:56And I'm going to take my wool,
0:05:56 > 0:06:00and just put a little bit of the length through the loop, and then
0:06:00 > 0:06:04I'm going to start wrapping it round each of the lolly sticks, like this.
0:06:04 > 0:06:07Wrap and loop, wrap and loop.
0:06:07 > 0:06:10Now, I'm wrapping these loops around quite loose,
0:06:10 > 0:06:13as I need the tension to be loose for the next step.
0:06:18 > 0:06:23OK. Now the fun bit. I've got a loop round every single lolly stick,
0:06:23 > 0:06:25and I'm going to do a loop round the first one I did.
0:06:25 > 0:06:27And then
0:06:27 > 0:06:29pull the bottom loop over the top loop
0:06:29 > 0:06:32and down the other side of the lolly stick.
0:06:32 > 0:06:36And this is where all the stitches and loops start to interlock.
0:06:36 > 0:06:37Every time I make a new loop,
0:06:37 > 0:06:40the bottom loop goes over the top of it,
0:06:40 > 0:06:41tying the whole thing together.
0:06:41 > 0:06:43And eventually,
0:06:43 > 0:06:47it will start flowing through the middle of our tube like that.
0:06:48 > 0:06:52Now, this can take a little while, so I'm going to do it at ninja speed.
0:06:56 > 0:06:58Using thicker wool gets you quicker results,
0:06:58 > 0:07:00as it starts to build up faster.
0:07:04 > 0:07:06Nearly there now.
0:07:09 > 0:07:11Right, that's looking pretty good.
0:07:11 > 0:07:15You can see how it's all come together through the loom.
0:07:15 > 0:07:17Even though the technique isn't traditional knitting,
0:07:17 > 0:07:20the end result looks pretty convincing.
0:07:20 > 0:07:23Now I need to get it off of my makeshift loom.
0:07:23 > 0:07:25I can't just pull it off, because it'll drop all these stitches
0:07:25 > 0:07:29and the whole thing would unravel, so I need to cast it off properly.
0:07:30 > 0:07:32So I'm going to get a good length of wool...
0:07:34 > 0:07:36..and cut it.
0:07:38 > 0:07:41Now I'm going to post the thread
0:07:41 > 0:07:45through each of my loops, so pull the loop up,
0:07:45 > 0:07:46post the loose thread through it...
0:07:49 > 0:07:50..pull it through like that.
0:07:50 > 0:07:54And then I can just slide that entire loop off of the loom. There we go.
0:07:54 > 0:07:57Now move on to the next one. Lift up the loop
0:07:57 > 0:07:59and push it through.
0:07:59 > 0:08:03And you can see it gradually coming off the loom
0:08:03 > 0:08:04as we cast it off.
0:08:06 > 0:08:07Last one.
0:08:12 > 0:08:14Look at that.
0:08:14 > 0:08:16Looks great!
0:08:16 > 0:08:19Tie a knot in the loose ends of the wool, so they don't unravel.
0:08:21 > 0:08:22There we go.
0:08:22 > 0:08:24Get rid of that bit.
0:08:24 > 0:08:26So now I've got one,
0:08:26 > 0:08:28but I need to ninja myself another one.
0:08:30 > 0:08:34There we go. Right. Might as well try them on.
0:08:34 > 0:08:37When you get to the end, about there,
0:08:37 > 0:08:41find a little hole in the stitch, pop your thumb through.
0:08:41 > 0:08:42There we are!
0:08:42 > 0:08:44Now, you don't just have to make green ones.
0:08:44 > 0:08:47You can change colours to create a stripy pattern,
0:08:47 > 0:08:50and you can experiment with different sized looms,
0:08:50 > 0:08:52like this cake tin I've used to make this rad hat.
0:08:55 > 0:08:59Now go to the website and get your ninja on.
0:09:01 > 0:09:03Art Ninja!
