0:00:05 > 0:00:08Time to get my ninja on... and my clothes.
0:00:08 > 0:00:09Ya!
0:00:09 > 0:00:11WHOOSH
0:00:11 > 0:00:14SWOOSH
0:00:14 > 0:00:16CLANG
0:00:16 > 0:00:19WHOOSH
0:00:19 > 0:00:21THUD
0:00:26 > 0:00:29- Oh, hey, Gavin. What have you got? - Oh, your magazine, Chicken Weekly.
0:00:29 > 0:00:32It must've been delivered to me by mistake.
0:00:32 > 0:00:34You've not got my magazine at all, have you?
0:00:34 > 0:00:35No, unfortunately,
0:00:35 > 0:00:38Annoying Best Mates Monthly hasn't been delivered yet.
0:00:38 > 0:00:41- Ha-ha, good one. Cheers, Rick. See you later.- See you later.
0:00:42 > 0:00:44Art Ninja.
0:00:44 > 0:00:49Gavin's full of hot air, so let's make this awesome cel animation.
0:00:49 > 0:00:52What I'm going to use is just a sheet of cardboard,
0:00:52 > 0:00:56and I'm going to draw a border around it,
0:00:56 > 0:00:58which is about the width of a ruler.
0:01:02 > 0:01:04Right, I'm going to cut out the middle bit,
0:01:04 > 0:01:05so I'm left with a frame.
0:01:05 > 0:01:09Be careful with scissors. They can be sharp.
0:01:09 > 0:01:11Now, you're going to need two of these,
0:01:11 > 0:01:14- so I've just ninja'd myself another one.- Ya!
0:01:14 > 0:01:17Now, grab yourself some clingfilm and a glue-stick,
0:01:17 > 0:01:20and give the frame a generous portion of glue.
0:01:24 > 0:01:26Looks like enough.
0:01:26 > 0:01:28OK, now the tricky bit.
0:01:28 > 0:01:30Roll it out over your frame.
0:01:33 > 0:01:36OK. Now, cos we used loads of glue,
0:01:36 > 0:01:40it means we can stretch it out across this frame
0:01:40 > 0:01:44without it suddenly sticking completely.
0:01:44 > 0:01:45Look at that. Nice and taut.
0:01:47 > 0:01:49Now, we want to put another good portion of glue
0:01:49 > 0:01:51on the other side of the frame.
0:01:51 > 0:01:54SWOOSH
0:01:54 > 0:01:58Now, sandwich the clingfilm between film between the two frames,
0:01:58 > 0:01:59like that.
0:01:59 > 0:02:01Just stretch it around like this,
0:02:01 > 0:02:03just to make sure it's nice and tight.
0:02:03 > 0:02:06And there we are, your first frame...
0:02:06 > 0:02:07ready for drawing on.
0:02:07 > 0:02:10Now, this isn't a canvas, this is a cel.
0:02:10 > 0:02:11It's what animators used to draw on.
0:02:11 > 0:02:13Now, rather than drawing straight onto it,
0:02:13 > 0:02:16I've drawn a little image, first, as a guide,
0:02:16 > 0:02:19so that I don't muck it up and have to make my cel again.
0:02:20 > 0:02:23Now, I'm just going to trace the guide on to the cel.
0:02:23 > 0:02:26'I'm using a permanent marker to do this.'
0:02:31 > 0:02:34A lot of seagulls in Bristol.
0:02:34 > 0:02:36Great. Now I can paint it.
0:02:36 > 0:02:39I'm putting yellow paper under the cel so that when I paint it,
0:02:39 > 0:02:41I can see it more easily.
0:02:41 > 0:02:43There we are.
0:02:43 > 0:02:45SQUELCH
0:02:45 > 0:02:48What I'm using here is acrylic paint,
0:02:48 > 0:02:50which is pretty happy to put on anything.
0:02:50 > 0:02:54SWOOSH
0:02:54 > 0:02:56The great thing about this,
0:02:56 > 0:02:58using cel, is that you could layer up a picture
0:02:58 > 0:03:00and create a foreground and a background,
0:03:00 > 0:03:02and if you were animating,
0:03:02 > 0:03:05it meant you didn't have to redraw everything over and over again,
0:03:05 > 0:03:10so what I've done here is drawn a lovely foreground.
0:03:10 > 0:03:12So, this is a box made up of two of the frames -
0:03:12 > 0:03:15one at the front and one at the back - and I wrapped
0:03:15 > 0:03:19a piece of cardboard around three of the sides, but left one of them open
0:03:19 > 0:03:23because that's where we're going to slide in our other cels.
0:03:23 > 0:03:28And if we just slide my frame inside...
0:03:28 > 0:03:29Look at that.
0:03:29 > 0:03:32So, hot-air balloon, over the lovely rolling hills,
0:03:32 > 0:03:36but it feels like it's in a bit of a void. It needs some background.
0:03:36 > 0:03:40And I've painted some white clouds on a blue piece of paper,
0:03:40 > 0:03:43and I've put sticky tacks on the corner,
0:03:43 > 0:03:45and so when I stick it to the back,
0:03:45 > 0:03:49if I ever want to change the weather, I can.
0:03:49 > 0:03:53And there we are. Look how beautiful that is. Gives it real depth.
0:03:53 > 0:03:56Now, this piece of art has a trick up its sleeve.
0:03:56 > 0:03:58So, I've drawn some other frames.
0:03:58 > 0:04:01We can see here how they work, sort of, one after the other,
0:04:01 > 0:04:04so I'm just going to grab my tablet.
0:04:04 > 0:04:07I've got on it some animation software.
0:04:07 > 0:04:09Right, so my first frame is in place.
0:04:09 > 0:04:11I'll just go for a frame.
0:04:11 > 0:04:13- CAMERA CLICKS - Nice.
0:04:13 > 0:04:15Swap out my frame to the next one.
0:04:16 > 0:04:19CAMERA CLICKS
0:04:19 > 0:04:22So, on each of these frames, the bird,
0:04:22 > 0:04:27he's moved just a tiny amount towards the balloon.
0:04:27 > 0:04:29Oh, now he's bumped into it.
0:04:29 > 0:04:31CAMERA CLICKS
0:04:31 > 0:04:34Cool. Let's have a little look at it.
0:04:35 > 0:04:40The air balloon cel picture - why don't you try it yourself?
0:04:40 > 0:04:42SQUELCH
0:04:42 > 0:04:44BOING
0:04:44 > 0:04:46Oh, erm...
0:04:46 > 0:04:47I'm a clay ninja,
0:04:47 > 0:04:50and that's because I know this awesome technique that will
0:04:50 > 0:04:53put bounce into any animation, and it's called -
0:04:53 > 0:04:55dun-duh-duh-dun -
0:04:55 > 0:04:56squash and stretch.
0:04:56 > 0:05:00Here's how to work it in three ninja moves.
0:05:00 > 0:05:02Ninja move number one...
0:05:02 > 0:05:04It's time to do the squash.
0:05:04 > 0:05:09Now, I'm going to be doing this with some clay and some wire.
0:05:09 > 0:05:12- So, I just put the ball up here. - CAMERA CLICKS
0:05:12 > 0:05:14And then, make it go down towards the table.
0:05:14 > 0:05:16'For each photo, paint out the wire
0:05:16 > 0:05:19'using free online photo-manipulation software.'
0:05:19 > 0:05:21And then, when it gets close to the table,
0:05:21 > 0:05:24when it actually touches it, it needs to squash out to
0:05:24 > 0:05:27absorb the impact, so it gets really squashed like that.
0:05:27 > 0:05:30And the first movement should be a really big jump,
0:05:30 > 0:05:32so it should go from round to quite squashed,
0:05:32 > 0:05:36because it feels more impactful, like it had more velocity.
0:05:36 > 0:05:38- There we go. - CAMERA CLICKS
0:05:38 > 0:05:41This is obviously the first part of squash and stretch -
0:05:41 > 0:05:44so the squash. And then, squash it a little bit more.
0:05:44 > 0:05:47- CAMERA CLICKS - And each time you squash it in this
0:05:47 > 0:05:49part of the animation, squash it a little bit less each time.
0:05:49 > 0:05:52So, the first one is a big impact, and then a little bit more,
0:05:52 > 0:05:54a little bit more. So it's kind of easing into it.
0:05:54 > 0:05:56Ninja move number two...
0:05:56 > 0:05:58Now we need to do the stretch part.
0:05:58 > 0:06:00First of all, the ball needs to return to normal ball shape,
0:06:00 > 0:06:02so just roll it into a ball.
0:06:06 > 0:06:08Here we go.
0:06:08 > 0:06:10- CAMERA CLICKS - And then it starts to go long,
0:06:10 > 0:06:12like a sausage,
0:06:12 > 0:06:14and that's because we are trying to give the idea that it's
0:06:14 > 0:06:17bouncing back away from the impact it just had.
0:06:17 > 0:06:19- CAMERA CLICKS - Bit more of a sausage.
0:06:19 > 0:06:22And this first bounce has been quite aggressive.
0:06:22 > 0:06:24It's a big squash and a big stretch,
0:06:24 > 0:06:26because it's fallen from the highest point.
0:06:26 > 0:06:28- There we go. - CAMERA CLICKS
0:06:28 > 0:06:30And as it raises up,
0:06:30 > 0:06:33it slowly starts to form back into its normal ball shape,
0:06:33 > 0:06:35so less of a stretch now.
0:06:35 > 0:06:37- There we go. - CAMERA CLICKS
0:06:37 > 0:06:39And then, when it gets to the highest point,
0:06:39 > 0:06:41back perfectly into a ball.
0:06:43 > 0:06:45CAMERA CLICKS
0:06:45 > 0:06:47Ninja move number three...
0:06:47 > 0:06:51So, now we need to use our squash and stretch skills to move the ball.
0:06:51 > 0:06:52If we're going to have a ball bounce
0:06:52 > 0:06:54and then slowly come to a stop,
0:06:54 > 0:06:57we need to decrease the amount of squash and stretch on each bounce.
0:06:57 > 0:07:00This makes the whole thing look more real.
0:07:00 > 0:07:02Let's take a look at the ball in action.
0:07:02 > 0:07:05BOING
0:07:06 > 0:07:08Hey, you, there.
0:07:08 > 0:07:11Odd socks suck but they don't have to any more,
0:07:11 > 0:07:15because you can turn them into the Sock Ninja.
0:07:17 > 0:07:20'Here's how you make it.' Ugh.
0:07:20 > 0:07:26'Stuff cotton wool in an old sock, and use hairbands or elastic bands
0:07:26 > 0:07:30'to keep it in a mega-head for your Sock Ninja.
0:07:31 > 0:07:36'Cut at the heel of your sock. Keep that. You'll need it later.
0:07:37 > 0:07:40'Make some slices for the body and the arms,
0:07:40 > 0:07:43'and use a needle and thread to sew them,
0:07:43 > 0:07:46'stuffing with cotton wool as you go.
0:07:48 > 0:07:51'Secure the hands with bands.
0:07:53 > 0:07:54'Hello, there.
0:07:54 > 0:07:58'Cut, sew, and stuff the other half of the sock to make legs,
0:07:58 > 0:08:01'and then sew them on.
0:08:01 > 0:08:03'Very springy.
0:08:05 > 0:08:08'Using felt, cut out shapes to add detail,
0:08:08 > 0:08:11'and use glue to attach them to your ninja.
0:08:13 > 0:08:16'Stick on eyes,
0:08:16 > 0:08:19'headband,
0:08:19 > 0:08:21'ears,
0:08:21 > 0:08:24'mouth and sash...
0:08:24 > 0:08:27'to complete the full ninja effect.'
0:08:28 > 0:08:32The Sock Ninja makes a great toy.
0:08:32 > 0:08:36Now you no longer have to throw your odd socks -
0:08:36 > 0:08:40unless you're using them as a ball, of course.
0:08:40 > 0:08:43Ha-ha! That looks fun. Where can I get one?
0:08:43 > 0:08:45WHOOSH AND THUD
0:08:45 > 0:08:47Those 3-D tellies are good, these days.
0:08:49 > 0:08:52Now, go to the website and get your ninja on.
0:08:55 > 0:08:57Art Ninja!
