0:00:05 > 0:00:07Time to get my ninja on.

0:00:07 > 0:00:08And my clothes.

0:00:24 > 0:00:25Who is it?

0:00:25 > 0:00:29Ricky, it's Sarah, are you OK? We're all really worried about you.

0:00:29 > 0:00:33Ricky's not here right now. Your call is important to us.

0:00:33 > 0:00:36If you'd like to leave a message after the beep,

0:00:36 > 0:00:37he'll get back to you.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40Ricky, don't be weird, a door can't have an answerphone.

0:00:40 > 0:00:41RICKY BEEPS LIKE AN ANSWERPHONE

0:00:41 > 0:00:43OK, if you're going to play that game,

0:00:43 > 0:00:45I'm gutted you missed my birthday and just give me a call

0:00:45 > 0:00:47when you're there. Bye.

0:00:52 > 0:00:54I had to take a rain check from Sarah's birthday,

0:00:54 > 0:00:57but I have a party hat for whatever the weather.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00So I've got a nice bit of corrugated cardboard here.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02How big do I need it to be?

0:01:04 > 0:01:07OK, about there.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10Just going to sticky tape that together.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13Now, cos it is corrugated cardboard, it's got all these

0:01:13 > 0:01:17lines that I can make creases along. It gets it much more circular.

0:01:18 > 0:01:19There we are.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22I'm going to cut some slits into the top,

0:01:22 > 0:01:24about 2.5 centimetres deep, all the way around.

0:01:28 > 0:01:32There we are. And then, we are just going to fold these out.

0:01:32 > 0:01:34And these are going to create a nice surface area

0:01:34 > 0:01:36to glue our next section onto.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38Speaking of which, I've got some balloons here

0:01:38 > 0:01:41and I am going to blow them up into various sizes.

0:01:43 > 0:01:46A little bit smaller. I'm using white balloons for a reason,

0:01:46 > 0:01:49as they are going to make up the structure of a cloud.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55Cool. Now I'm just going to sticky tape these balloons together.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57I'm going to roll the tape round back on itself.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00I'm going to try and make them form a nice kind of cloud shape.

0:02:00 > 0:02:04Which is easy, because clouds are so random.

0:02:07 > 0:02:08I'm using eight balloons,

0:02:08 > 0:02:11which I would say is the minimum amount for a cloud.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13There we are. That is pretty cloudy already, isn't it?

0:02:13 > 0:02:15Now I need to attach it to my hat.

0:02:19 > 0:02:20Last one.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24There we go. Pretty good start.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26Now I'm going to give it a layer of papier-mache

0:02:26 > 0:02:30and some cotton wool at the same time.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32I've got a bowl here to hold it still

0:02:32 > 0:02:34cos otherwise it gets a bit messy, so if you are doing

0:02:34 > 0:02:37this at home, I do recommend putting some newspaper down.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39I've got some papier-mache mixture here,

0:02:39 > 0:02:42which is two parts glue and one part water.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45I'm just going to start layering it onto the balloons.

0:02:47 > 0:02:51I'm using kitchen towel because it is white, it's quite light

0:02:51 > 0:02:53and we are not going to be painting these balloons

0:02:53 > 0:02:56so we want it to stay as white as possible.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58You could use tissue or white paper.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04So, on top of all this kitchen towel,

0:03:04 > 0:03:07I'm also going to be putting some cotton wool.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10I'm just going to break it up like this into nice bits.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19OK, it's looking pretty good. Now I just need to do the crown part.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23Just go round into the inside as well.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26Make it nice and soft for my head.

0:03:26 > 0:03:27And some more cotton wool.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31Looking pretty good, good coverage.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33Now, the next stage is to wait for it to dry

0:03:33 > 0:03:37and I forecast that will take about a second, because I'm a ninja.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41It has dried nice and rigid, it looks like a lovely,

0:03:41 > 0:03:42fluffy white cloud.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45But we all know weather is a little more dynamic than that

0:03:45 > 0:03:48so I have cut out some weather symbols here and I'm going to

0:03:48 > 0:03:52attach them with Velcro, which you can get from the supermarket.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54So, I'm going to put a lightning bolt up here.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59Let's have the other end coming out maybe there.

0:03:59 > 0:04:01And unfortunately, it does always rain,

0:04:01 > 0:04:04let's put a bit of rain down there.

0:04:04 > 0:04:09And just for my own sanity, hopefully, the sun will come out.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11There we go. Time to try it on.

0:04:13 > 0:04:15Ah, yeah!

0:04:23 > 0:04:26My hair always goes frizzy when it rains.

0:04:26 > 0:04:28The Whatever-The-Weather hat.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31Try making it to brighten up a grey day.

0:04:32 > 0:04:34Here is a real quick art tip -

0:04:34 > 0:04:36how to make a character look soaking wet.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39So I'm going to start by drawing my character.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41And here. Put a T-shirt on him.

0:04:44 > 0:04:45A pair of shorts.

0:04:52 > 0:04:54Now, I'm going to make him look really miserable

0:04:54 > 0:04:56cos he's soaking wet.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59And on his hair, I'm going to draw a waggly line to make it look like

0:04:59 > 0:05:01it's all stuck to his head and soaked.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03Above him, draw a rain cloud...

0:05:05 > 0:05:08..with some drops of water coming out of it.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12Some of them, I'm going to draw closer to him

0:05:12 > 0:05:15to give the impression that he is dripping wet.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19Now, I'm going to add some lines to the top of his T-shirt.

0:05:19 > 0:05:22This could be where the water has kind of soaked in

0:05:22 > 0:05:25and then underneath him, I'm going to draw a puddle.

0:05:29 > 0:05:31Now, add a couple of lines here

0:05:31 > 0:05:33and there, cos water is quite reflective.

0:05:33 > 0:05:34A few more drops.

0:05:36 > 0:05:37There we go.

0:05:40 > 0:05:41Quick art tip.

0:05:42 > 0:05:44Don't be wet, have a go at it yourself.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54I'm going to show you a trick that will get your animations

0:05:54 > 0:05:55running rings around the rest.

0:05:55 > 0:05:59I'm going to teach you the secret of the memo-note free-runner.

0:05:59 > 0:06:02Things you'll need are - a pen, a book of memo notes, a camera

0:06:02 > 0:06:05and a computer, or if you've got a tablet

0:06:05 > 0:06:08with one of those animation apps, that's pretty good too.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11Here is how to work it in three ninja moves.

0:06:12 > 0:06:14Ninja move number one.

0:06:14 > 0:06:16I'm going to put a memo note straight onto the wall.

0:06:16 > 0:06:18I'm going to be really careful not to draw on the wall

0:06:18 > 0:06:20and I'm going to sketch the first frame of my character.

0:06:20 > 0:06:23So, head, nice, big, round body, and then when you are going

0:06:23 > 0:06:26to draw a person running, I always start sort of mid-run.

0:06:26 > 0:06:28When you run, you run in alternates like this.

0:06:28 > 0:06:30So I'm going to have a leg forward

0:06:30 > 0:06:32and a leg back and then if the right leg is forward,

0:06:32 > 0:06:36I am going to put the left arm forward and the right arm back.

0:06:36 > 0:06:39So that is the first frame and that's kind of a good guide.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41Then I'm going to put another memo note over it.

0:06:41 > 0:06:42I can see the frame from before,

0:06:42 > 0:06:44that can be my guide for the next drawing.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47And it looks like his foot's about to land on the floor

0:06:47 > 0:06:49and it will probably land about there

0:06:49 > 0:06:52so that is going to be my starting point here.

0:06:52 > 0:06:56Now we will draw a nice head, round belly,

0:06:56 > 0:06:59and the way it would have landed, it's got a slight bend in the knee

0:06:59 > 0:07:02now and his other leg probably would have brought forward.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05Arm goes down, other arm goes down as well.

0:07:06 > 0:07:07Another note on top

0:07:07 > 0:07:10and you already see he is starting to move across the wall.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12I've got this foot on the floor and this means I'm going to keep

0:07:12 > 0:07:14this foot where it is. This is a really important point

0:07:14 > 0:07:17because if you made a run cycle and a person puts a foot down

0:07:17 > 0:07:20but keeps moving, it just looks ridiculous, like he is

0:07:20 > 0:07:24sliding across the floor and unless he is on ice, which this guy is not,

0:07:24 > 0:07:25it doesn't work.

0:07:25 > 0:07:26I'm taking a photograph

0:07:26 > 0:07:30after each drawn memo note to create my animation.

0:07:32 > 0:07:34Ninja move number two.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37So once you've drawn your character and you've drawn your running frames

0:07:37 > 0:07:41and you get back to a frame where it's kind of where he started

0:07:41 > 0:07:44so the same leg's forward, the same leg's back.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47It's at this point you can do a little bit of a sneaky cheat

0:07:47 > 0:07:50and that is reaching to the back and bringing that frame forward

0:07:50 > 0:07:54to put over the front, because now we are into an animation loop.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57An animation loop is a loop of frames, it finishes where it

0:07:57 > 0:08:00begins, which means you can continually re-use them.

0:08:00 > 0:08:04And this is good because you can make your character run for ever.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07Ninja move number three.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09Now your character can run, you can

0:08:09 > 0:08:12control the distance at which they travel. Basically, their speed.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15So look here, if I want to make him faster and bound further away,

0:08:15 > 0:08:18I can just push the memo note further away

0:08:18 > 0:08:21until you can nearly see the other frame, but not quite.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23That is going to work really well.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28So use your three ninja moves, use your imagination

0:08:28 > 0:08:31and get your memo-note free-runner running around your room.

0:08:31 > 0:08:33Ready? Steady. Go.

0:08:49 > 0:08:52Now go to the website and get your ninja on.

0:08:55 > 0:08:56Art ninja!
