0:00:05 > 0:00:06Time to get my ninja on.

0:00:06 > 0:00:08And my clothes!

0:00:25 > 0:00:29I'm going to make something inspired by Catalan architect and artist

0:00:29 > 0:00:31Antoni Gaudi.

0:00:31 > 0:00:33Seeing as I've got loads of shoeboxes lying around,

0:00:33 > 0:00:36I'm going to decorate one in the style of Gaudi and use it to keep

0:00:36 > 0:00:38all my bits and bobs in.

0:00:38 > 0:00:41I'm going to need a bowl, cos I'm going to make some salt dough.

0:00:41 > 0:00:42And I'm still not baking a cake.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45And some mix.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47Now, the mix is half a cup of salt,

0:00:47 > 0:00:50a whole cup of plain flour

0:00:50 > 0:00:52and half a cup of water.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57Now, you're probably wondering why I'm making this dough.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59Well, I'm going to decorate my box with a lizard

0:00:59 > 0:01:02and create some mosaic tiles.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04SQUELCH

0:01:05 > 0:01:07There you go. That's mixed in pretty well.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09Now I need to start shaping it.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11I'll just move these out of the way

0:01:11 > 0:01:14cos I'm going to bring in a baking tray.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16I've popped some greaseproof paper on there.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18I'm going to take a third of my mix off.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22Now I'm going to roll this bit into a sausage shape.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24I want it fatter at one end,

0:01:24 > 0:01:26getting thinner towards the other.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28I'm just going to curl it to make a tail.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42All right, he's looking good.

0:01:42 > 0:01:45Now I'm going to make the tiles for my mosaic.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51I'm going to cut lines.

0:01:51 > 0:01:52Cut them in different sizes,

0:01:52 > 0:01:55just so you've got a variety in your mosaic.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57Right, they're all cut.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59I am going to lay them out on my baking tray.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05Now, I could leave these to dry for three days. But not me.

0:02:05 > 0:02:09I'm going to use my oven!

0:02:09 > 0:02:11And I'm going to sound like a Bake Off judge when I say,

0:02:11 > 0:02:13"Ovens are hot, so be careful."

0:02:14 > 0:02:17Put them in the oven at the lowest temperature for three hours

0:02:17 > 0:02:18then leave to cool.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20Now I'm ready to paint.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25I'm going to paint the lizard bright and colourful.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27You could say a bit gaudy.

0:02:27 > 0:02:31- My name is Gaudi, not gaudy. - Hey, Gaudi.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34I didn't expect to see you time-travelling here.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36I put the "art" into architecture,

0:02:36 > 0:02:42adding in materials like ceramics, stained-glass and wrought iron work.

0:02:42 > 0:02:43Here's some of my work now.

0:02:47 > 0:02:51- I see you're recreating something similar now.- I am.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54But if you don't mind, could you shoo? Time is tight.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57I'm going to add some blue now and create a nice tribal pattern

0:02:57 > 0:02:59along the back.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07Time to add some extra detail. First with orange...

0:03:08 > 0:03:10..and then with green...

0:03:10 > 0:03:12And finally, some eyes.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17Now I'm going to stick him to the top of my box.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19I'm just doing that with PVA glue.

0:03:21 > 0:03:25Now I'm going to take it up another notch with a mosaic.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28I could paint all these tiles, but not me.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31I'm going to use my ninja skills.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Check it out.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38I'm using more PVA glue to stick the tiles to my box.

0:03:40 > 0:03:44The great thing is about PVA is that it disappears when it dries.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46First I'm doing red...

0:03:46 > 0:03:47then dark orange...

0:03:47 > 0:03:50and finally, yellow.

0:03:50 > 0:03:53You need to leave a little gap between your tiles to make it look

0:03:53 > 0:03:55like an authentic mosaic.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58Well, I'm going to continue that yellow around the sides.

0:04:03 > 0:04:04And the final tile.

0:04:08 > 0:04:10Wow. Look at that.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15Well, I might as well put some bits and bobs inside my box.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18I'm going to keep art supplies inside.

0:04:26 > 0:04:28There we go. Check that out.

0:04:28 > 0:04:30I think it will make a cool time capsule.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49- Hi, Ricky!- Oh, it's Lauren and Mark from The Dengineers.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52How about making something with...

0:04:52 > 0:04:54- ..a broken broom!- Sorry, guys.

0:04:54 > 0:04:58Not this time. I've DEN something with that already.

0:04:58 > 0:05:02- Ricky, Ricky, Ricky! - Hey, what have these guys got?

0:05:02 > 0:05:06- Ricky, can you make art with tinfoil?- OK. I choose you.

0:05:06 > 0:05:08Yay!

0:05:08 > 0:05:12- What are your names? - Hi, I'm Niamh.- Hi, I'm Jack.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15- Nice to meet you, Niamh and Jack. And where are you from?- Belfast.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17All right. I'll just go and grab my things.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19OK, here we are.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21I've got my trusty tinfoil.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23What are you going to make, Ricky?

0:05:23 > 0:05:26- I think I'm going to make an owl. And I'll show you how.- Cool.

0:05:26 > 0:05:30I'm going to start by covering my piece of cardboard in glue.

0:05:30 > 0:05:34- Do you guys like owls?- I like the way they can turn their head around.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37Hopefully this will help you make some head-turning art.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40Now I'm going to take the foil and I'm going to stick it over my piece

0:05:40 > 0:05:42of cardboard, and I'm going to keep the shiny side up.

0:05:47 > 0:05:48There you go.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51Put a little bit of glue on the back, just to stick down the edges.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56OK, so I've got my reflective surface now.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59I'm going to use that to sketch the drawing of my owl onto.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03What I'm doing now is I'm pressing into the foil and the card

0:06:03 > 0:06:06with a pencil, kind of creating a relief picture.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08Just finishing the outline here.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11Now I'm going to glue string along the lines to add extra detail,

0:06:11 > 0:06:13make it look really 3-D.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16I'm going to use a brush here, just because you get a finer line.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24So it's a little bit fiddly.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27I'm just going along and gluing string along the lines

0:06:27 > 0:06:29I've drawn with a pencil. What would you call an owl if you had one?

0:06:29 > 0:06:33I would probably call mine Sir Hoot-a-lot.

0:06:33 > 0:06:35Sir Hoots-a-lot?

0:06:35 > 0:06:36Yeah, makes sense.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39The tootsies done.

0:06:39 > 0:06:43Finally, I'm going to put in Sir Hoots-a-lot's beak.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45I'd like to point out that

0:06:45 > 0:06:47Sir Hoots-a-lot's first name is Sandra.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50So we need to cover this picture again in another layer of foil.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53Now, I can wait for it to dry, or I could use some ninja skills.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56- What do you reckon? - Use the ninja skills.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58Ninja skills it is.

0:06:59 > 0:07:02Ninja skills. Now it's ready for another layer of foil.

0:07:02 > 0:07:04So I'm just going to start pasting on the PVA glue again.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10Now I can put over my second layer of foil.

0:07:13 > 0:07:17Using my fingers, I'm just going to push the foil into all of the gaps.

0:07:17 > 0:07:18As I'm pushing down on the string,

0:07:18 > 0:07:21the picture's starting to appear through the foil.

0:07:21 > 0:07:23Now, to get into the tighter nooks and crannies,

0:07:23 > 0:07:25I'm going to use a cotton bud.

0:07:26 > 0:07:29The reason I've done two layers is so that if I accidentally tear

0:07:29 > 0:07:32this layer of foil, it still looks good underneath.

0:07:32 > 0:07:34Right, I've pushed in all the gaps that I can now.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37I'm going to add little bit more detail with a pencil.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40I think I'm going to give him some nice feathers on his belly.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42Now I've got two layers of foil on here,

0:07:42 > 0:07:44this pencil's leaving really nice lines.

0:07:44 > 0:07:48I'm going to put a little bit of detail on the face now.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51There we are. I think it's ready for a final finishing touch.

0:07:52 > 0:07:55I've got some black boot polish here.

0:07:55 > 0:07:57With a piece of tissue I'm going to rub it all into the gaps

0:07:57 > 0:07:59in the grooves that I've made.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06So the boot polish is accentuating all of the detail that I've made,

0:08:06 > 0:08:09and in some of the areas where the foil is ripped and you can

0:08:09 > 0:08:11get through to the string, it's really thick and black

0:08:11 > 0:08:14and it gives it a nice bit of contrast across the picture.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16Right, I think that's it.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18- Are you guys ready to see it? - Yep.- Yes.

0:08:18 > 0:08:24- What you think of this? - It's amazing, Ricky.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27- What would you give it out of 10? BOTH:- It's a 10!

0:08:27 > 0:08:30I'll accept that score.

0:08:30 > 0:08:33I think it's so good, it deserves the frame.

0:08:33 > 0:08:35There we are.

0:08:35 > 0:08:37Thanks for your suggestion, guys. You've been brilliant.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39- Bye!- Bye!

0:08:42 > 0:08:44HOOT, HOOT

0:08:46 > 0:08:49Now go to the website and get your ninja on!

0:08:53 > 0:08:54Art ninja!
