0:00:05 > 0:00:08Time to get my ninja on. Got my clothes.
0:00:19 > 0:00:20BIRDS TWEETING
0:00:20 > 0:00:22Atchoo!
0:00:25 > 0:00:29The thing about being an art ninja is you're always moving.
0:00:29 > 0:00:33They're doing drum practice next door. It's really annoying.
0:00:33 > 0:00:35Oh.
0:00:35 > 0:00:37But it's making me move.
0:00:37 > 0:00:39Oh, I can't control it.
0:00:39 > 0:00:41It's triggered something inside of me.
0:00:44 > 0:00:47Yeah! Oh, now I'm dad dancing!
0:00:51 > 0:00:54That's not dad dancing. This is dad dancing.
0:00:54 > 0:00:56Oh, he's so embarrassing!
0:01:01 > 0:01:03- Hey.- Hi.
0:01:06 > 0:01:08Wahey.
0:01:09 > 0:01:11Cool dance moves.
0:01:11 > 0:01:12What's that?
0:01:17 > 0:01:20I've heard of dancing on the ceiling but that's ridiculous.
0:01:20 > 0:01:23To make this laid-back animation, you'll need...
0:01:23 > 0:01:27a tablet or smartphone with animation app...
0:01:27 > 0:01:29some interesting terrain...
0:01:29 > 0:01:32and a friend! I'm cheating a little here.
0:01:32 > 0:01:35This is my friend Claire and she's a contemporary dancer.
0:01:35 > 0:01:39And you can put it together in just three ninja moves.
0:01:39 > 0:01:41Ninja move number one.
0:01:41 > 0:01:43It's time to look at our world a little differently
0:01:43 > 0:01:46cos we aren't going to be animating on our usual plane.
0:01:50 > 0:01:53Look for interesting areas on the ground.
0:01:53 > 0:01:56Things that don't seem exciting from this perspective
0:01:56 > 0:01:57might be great to animate on.
0:01:57 > 0:02:00And remember, you don't need to worry about gravity, cos
0:02:00 > 0:02:03your character can jump really high, or even fly,
0:02:03 > 0:02:05cos they're not really in the air.
0:02:05 > 0:02:06Ninja move number two.
0:02:06 > 0:02:09Now you've got interesting places to animate,
0:02:09 > 0:02:11it's time to start thinking about your choreography.
0:02:11 > 0:02:14Work with your animation model to work out what you can do.
0:02:14 > 0:02:17This is where my model really comes into her own.
0:02:25 > 0:02:27Ninja move number three...
0:02:27 > 0:02:28It's time to start shooting.
0:02:28 > 0:02:32So what I've done is I've attached my smartphone with animation app
0:02:32 > 0:02:33to this fun little rig here.
0:02:33 > 0:02:35Now, if you don't have fancy rigs like me,
0:02:35 > 0:02:37you can simply use a selfie stick.
0:03:06 > 0:03:08- OK. We've danced around the park... - Mm-hmm.
0:03:08 > 0:03:10..we've shot all our frames
0:03:10 > 0:03:12and I've added some cool sound effects.
0:03:12 > 0:03:15So, I think it's time to take a look at our mini masterpiece.
0:03:31 > 0:03:33I think you've got some ninja dance moves.
0:03:35 > 0:03:37Here's a quick art tip of how to drop a character jumping.
0:03:37 > 0:03:39Got a diving board in place already.
0:03:39 > 0:03:43He's going to be springing off of that. I'll start with his head.
0:03:43 > 0:03:46Needs to be lent back a little bit cos he's jumping through the air.
0:03:46 > 0:03:48Eyes looking forward.
0:03:48 > 0:03:50Needs to be pretty pleased with himself.
0:03:50 > 0:03:54That's not important for jumping, but I like him to be happy.
0:03:54 > 0:03:56His hair's going to be blown back.
0:03:58 > 0:04:01Cos he's jumping through the wind. Now his body.
0:04:01 > 0:04:04I'm going to put his arms up diagonally,
0:04:04 > 0:04:05coming out from his shoulders.
0:04:05 > 0:04:08He's throwing his weight up in the air.
0:04:11 > 0:04:13And some shorts.
0:04:16 > 0:04:21And I want his front foot facing up, and his back foot facing down.
0:04:21 > 0:04:24He's just sprung away from it.
0:04:24 > 0:04:27Put a couple of wobble lines around him, to show the action,
0:04:27 > 0:04:31and then some speed lines coming away from his back, showing
0:04:31 > 0:04:32the direction that he's jumping in.
0:04:32 > 0:04:34There we go. Quick art tip.
0:04:39 > 0:04:42Come on. Jump to it, and have a go yourself.
0:04:53 > 0:04:55The art ninja zoetrope.
0:04:56 > 0:04:59Every film or TV show you've ever watched
0:04:59 > 0:05:02is made up of individual pictures speeding by in quick succession.
0:05:02 > 0:05:05A zoetrope is just an early version of that.
0:05:05 > 0:05:07So, take your paper plate.
0:05:07 > 0:05:09Now, I've painted mine black.
0:05:09 > 0:05:12And, with a bit of modelling clay to protect the table,
0:05:12 > 0:05:14poke a hole through the centre with a pencil.
0:05:14 > 0:05:17With a pair of scissors, just cut a simple little X.
0:05:19 > 0:05:22Now, that's going to work as a cradle for a marble.
0:05:22 > 0:05:24It's going to help the zoetrope spin.
0:05:24 > 0:05:27And I'm going to hold that in place with some sticky tape.
0:05:30 > 0:05:31Cool.
0:05:31 > 0:05:33Now, take a long sheet of black card,
0:05:33 > 0:05:36long enough to fit around the outside of your plate.
0:05:36 > 0:05:39Now, I'm going to cut 12 slot into it, equal distances apart.
0:05:39 > 0:05:41And I'm going to mark out where I'm going to make the cuts.
0:05:41 > 0:05:44I think they're going to be eight centimetres deep,
0:05:44 > 0:05:47and they're going to be about five millimetres in width.
0:05:57 > 0:06:00With some scissors, carefully cut those slots out.
0:06:13 > 0:06:17Now go back along and just cut-off all the waste bits you left behind.
0:06:17 > 0:06:21Now these slots are going to be what I watch the animation through.
0:06:21 > 0:06:22They're little viewfinders.
0:06:22 > 0:06:25Now I just stick that round the outside of the paper plate
0:06:25 > 0:06:27with a little bit of double sided sticky tape.
0:06:27 > 0:06:30You can use glue or normal sticky tape.
0:06:30 > 0:06:32Just run that among the bottom.
0:06:32 > 0:06:35And I'm going to put a little bit on the edge here as well,
0:06:35 > 0:06:39to stick it together where it overlaps.
0:06:39 > 0:06:42Just going to prepare my plate by rolling over the sides,
0:06:42 > 0:06:46so I've got a nice surface to stick the double-sided sticky tape to.
0:06:46 > 0:06:50Right, peel off the backing of my double-sided sticky tape.
0:06:50 > 0:06:53Just going to roll the plate along and anywhere where it needs a
0:06:53 > 0:06:56little more stick, I'm going to use some sticky tape to hold it down.
0:06:59 > 0:07:03Just where it overlaps. There you go.
0:07:03 > 0:07:06So, the zoetrope is a bit like a drum,
0:07:06 > 0:07:09and when you place a sequence of photographs or images on the inside
0:07:09 > 0:07:13and spin it, they animate in smooth motion.
0:07:13 > 0:07:16So I need to draw my sequence of images.
0:07:16 > 0:07:19I'm going to grab a long piece of white card with a little bit
0:07:19 > 0:07:22of overlap so it fits nicely on the inside of the drum.
0:07:22 > 0:07:25Right. So now I need to draw my 12 pictures.
0:07:25 > 0:07:26Equal distances apart,
0:07:26 > 0:07:29so they line-up with the slots on the zoetrope.
0:07:31 > 0:07:33I'm going to drop someone dancing!
0:07:36 > 0:07:40As you can see, I draw my figure in a different position each time
0:07:40 > 0:07:42so it animates nicely.
0:07:42 > 0:07:45But so it flows, I need to return it to the starting position.
0:07:45 > 0:07:48The word "zoetrope" derives from the Greek word meaning
0:07:48 > 0:07:49"life turning".
0:07:49 > 0:07:53There we are. My last frame is nearly at my starting position.
0:07:53 > 0:07:55That should animate well.
0:07:55 > 0:07:59So I've got my 12 pictures, and my 12 slots on the zoetrope.
0:07:59 > 0:08:02And I'm going to pop them in and make them dance.
0:08:05 > 0:08:06Now, give it a spin
0:08:06 > 0:08:10and watch that tiny dancer spin across the dance floor.
0:08:10 > 0:08:14MUSIC: Tiny Dancer (Hold Me Closer) by Ironik ft Chipmunk and Elton John
0:08:14 > 0:08:16It's better than my dancing.
0:08:16 > 0:08:18But not nearly as good as Dad's!
0:08:21 > 0:08:23You don't have to do a dancer.
0:08:23 > 0:08:26You can make your figure do whatever you like.
0:08:30 > 0:08:32This one's jumping!
0:08:34 > 0:08:36Or a dog going for walkies.
0:08:38 > 0:08:39Now go to the website
0:08:39 > 0:08:41and get your ninja on.
0:08:44 > 0:08:46Art ninja!
