0:01:38 > 0:01:42I haven't seen one of these in Staithes for a long, long time.
0:01:42 > 0:01:43Yeah, beautiful.
0:01:43 > 0:01:48You know, all the women and girls used to wear them to help

0:01:52 > 0:01:54Imagine that, Salty.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16All right, Ernie? Do you want to meet Sue?
0:02:16 > 0:02:20I used to run down to the beach as often as I could.
0:02:20 > 0:02:21Hello, Sue.
0:02:21 > 0:02:25Meeting up with my best friends Little Ernie and Little Sailor Sue.
0:02:32 > 0:02:37One spring day, Ernie and I were playing ball on the beach.
0:02:37 > 0:02:41Little Sailor Sue came to join us wearing a Staithes village hat,
0:02:41 > 0:02:43which had lots of frills on it.
0:02:43 > 0:02:47And she was balancing a basket on her head, too.
0:02:47 > 0:02:50- Shall we see if I can balance it all the way to the rockpools?- Yeah.
0:02:50 > 0:02:52So, off we went.
0:02:52 > 0:02:58Sue kept her head very straight, and the basket didn't slip once.
0:02:58 > 0:03:01Well, soon we'd reached our favourite rockpool.
0:03:03 > 0:03:06And as we gazed deep down into the glittery waters,
0:03:06 > 0:03:09a magical world appeared before our eyes.
0:03:16 > 0:03:20Sally the Starfish and Andrew the Anemone were playing
0:03:20 > 0:03:23catch with Sally's bouncy ball,
0:03:23 > 0:03:25when they heard the sound of voices,
0:03:25 > 0:03:28drifting melodiously across the rockpool floor.
0:03:29 > 0:03:35HE SINGS IN HIGH-PITCHED VOICE
0:03:36 > 0:03:38"What's that?" asked Andrew.
0:03:38 > 0:03:41"I don't know," said Sally, looking baffled.
0:03:41 > 0:03:43"Let's go and see."
0:03:43 > 0:03:49So, they followed the sound of the singing until they came to
0:03:49 > 0:03:55a rather tall and colourful pyramid of sea snails.
0:03:55 > 0:03:57Yes! Sea snails.
0:03:57 > 0:04:02Sea snails in top hats, sea snails in woolly hats,
0:04:02 > 0:04:07sea snails in glasses and beards and moustaches.
0:04:07 > 0:04:08And they were singing!
0:04:10 > 0:04:13"It's Sidney's Snail Choir", said Sally.
0:04:13 > 0:04:16"Don't they sound amazing?"
0:04:16 > 0:04:19"Thanks," said a snail with a large moustache.
0:04:19 > 0:04:21"We're just getting ready for the Spring Tide show."
0:04:23 > 0:04:26"But where's Sidney?" asked Sally.
0:04:26 > 0:04:29For although she could see a lot of singing snails,
0:04:29 > 0:04:31not one was her dear friend Sidney.
0:04:33 > 0:04:36And suddenly, she heard an unusual sound.
0:04:37 > 0:04:39HE HICCUPS
0:04:39 > 0:04:42Just then, Sidney appeared from behind his friends.
0:04:43 > 0:04:47"I'm... I'm here!", he said.
0:04:47 > 0:04:54"I've got - hic! - I've got hic-hic-hiccups!"
0:04:54 > 0:05:00Poor Sidney! Each time he hiccupped, his shell shot up and spun around.
0:05:00 > 0:05:06"I can't - hic! - perform like this," said Sidney sadly.
0:05:06 > 0:05:09"And I wanted to sing a special - hic!
0:05:09 > 0:05:12"song for all my rockpool - hic! - friends."
0:05:12 > 0:05:15"Oh, no!" said Andrew. "That's terrible news."
0:05:16 > 0:05:21"My choir will have to - hic! - sing it - hic! - without me. Hic!"
0:05:22 > 0:05:23"BOO!"
0:05:23 > 0:05:27shouted Andrew, very suddenly waving his tentacles wildly at Sidney.
0:05:27 > 0:05:28SALTY WHIMPERS
0:05:28 > 0:05:31He wanted to surprise him, because, you know,
0:05:31 > 0:05:36they do say that surprises can sometimes make your hiccups go away.
0:05:36 > 0:05:42"Nothing surprises me. Hic!" said Sidney. "I'm not a very - hic! -
0:05:42 > 0:05:44"surprisable sort of snail. Hic!"
0:05:45 > 0:05:50"Well, if you can't sing because of your hiccups,
0:05:50 > 0:05:53"come and join our game of catch instead," said Sally.
0:05:53 > 0:05:54SALTY BARKS
0:05:54 > 0:05:58Yes, yes, Salty, I know. You like a game of catch, don't you?
0:05:58 > 0:06:00Oh, dear me, you do. Anyway...
0:06:01 > 0:06:04Sally threw the ball to Andrew, Andrew threw it to
0:06:04 > 0:06:09Sidney, Sidney stretched out his snail tentacles,
0:06:09 > 0:06:11and was just about to catch it when...
0:06:11 > 0:06:12"HIC!"
0:06:12 > 0:06:15..his shell spun upwards, hit the ball,
0:06:15 > 0:06:19sent it flying off in the direction of the thick seaweed.
0:06:20 > 0:06:24"Sorry!", said Sidney, as they went to look for it. "I - hic! -
0:06:24 > 0:06:27"I hope it isn't - hic! - isn't lost."
0:06:28 > 0:06:33Sally peered into the thick seaweed. "Wait, wait!
0:06:33 > 0:06:36"I think I've found it," she said.
0:06:36 > 0:06:40And then she saw another one, stuck to the seaweed,
0:06:40 > 0:06:43and there was something very strange about it.
0:06:43 > 0:06:46Andrew came to look, too.
0:06:46 > 0:06:50"It looks just like your ball, but it's dancing!" he giggled.
0:06:50 > 0:06:52And sure enough, when they looked closely,
0:06:52 > 0:06:57they could see lots and lots of little balls jiggling about.
0:06:57 > 0:07:00Sidney nudged one gently.
0:07:01 > 0:07:03"Um... Hic!
0:07:03 > 0:07:06"It's as if there's something inside that wants to get out."
0:07:08 > 0:07:13And then, suddenly, almost by magic,
0:07:13 > 0:07:17all the little balls started popping open.
0:07:17 > 0:07:19HE IMITATES BUBBLES POPPING
0:07:23 > 0:07:24Sidney was so surprised,
0:07:24 > 0:07:27he did a somersault.
0:07:27 > 0:07:29For out swam the most
0:07:29 > 0:07:32curious-looking creatures,
0:07:32 > 0:07:37with tentacles for noses and flouncy-looking frills all
0:07:37 > 0:07:39around their bodies.
0:07:39 > 0:07:42"Wow!" said Sally. "Who are you?"
0:07:43 > 0:07:47"We're cuttlefish," said one. "We've just popped out of our egg cases."
0:07:47 > 0:07:52"Woohoo-hoo!" said another. "Ah, we're so happy we could dance!"
0:07:52 > 0:07:53said a third.
0:07:53 > 0:07:57"When I'm happy, I usually sing," said Sidney.
0:07:57 > 0:08:00"But I can't today, cos I've got hiccups."
0:08:01 > 0:08:05"Wait, Sidney!" said Sally, in amazement.
0:08:05 > 0:08:08"You're not hiccupping any more!"
0:08:08 > 0:08:11SALTY BARKS Yes, I know. The cuttlefish popping
0:08:11 > 0:08:16out of the eggs had given Sidney such a surprise that he stopped
0:08:16 > 0:08:18hiccupping straightaway.
0:08:18 > 0:08:20SALTY WHIMPERS
0:08:20 > 0:08:22He couldn't thank the cuttlefish enough.
0:08:22 > 0:08:25"Now you'll be able to sing in the
0:08:25 > 0:08:29"Spring Tide show for all the rockpool!" Sally beamed.
0:08:29 > 0:08:33Well, all the rockpoolers gathered for the song.
0:08:33 > 0:08:37The snails jostled into their positions and then they
0:08:37 > 0:08:39started to sing.
0:08:40 > 0:08:43# When we share our little rockpool with y-o-o-o-u
0:08:43 > 0:08:48# We are merry rockpool creatures, wah-ha-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo
0:08:48 > 0:08:52# And we'll sing you happy songs from among the seaweed fronds
0:08:52 > 0:08:57# When we share our little rockpool with you, with you
0:08:57 > 0:09:01# When we share our little rockpool with you. #
0:09:01 > 0:09:02Oh!
0:09:02 > 0:09:06Everyone loved the song so much they swayed in time and the
0:09:06 > 0:09:09cuttlefish showed off a very special skill.
0:09:11 > 0:09:15They made beautiful inky patterns in the water.
0:09:15 > 0:09:18A smiley face, and a swirly snail shell,
0:09:18 > 0:09:21and the best one of all - a heart.
0:09:23 > 0:09:25And when the song ended, everyone cheered.
0:09:27 > 0:09:30"When the tide comes in we're off to the open sea,"
0:09:30 > 0:09:33said one of the cuttlefish, "but it's been wonderful sharing
0:09:33 > 0:09:35"your rockpool and hearing your song."
0:09:36 > 0:09:39"I couldn't have sung it without you," said Sidney.
0:09:39 > 0:09:43"Thank you for getting rid of my hiccups."
0:09:43 > 0:09:48# And we'll sing you happy songs from among the seaweed fronds
0:09:48 > 0:09:55# When we share our little rockpool with you, ba-rum! #
0:09:55 > 0:09:59When we looked up from the rockpool, Little Sailor Sue was excited.
0:09:59 > 0:10:02- I've got an idea for a game! - What's that?
0:10:02 > 0:10:06We went back to the beach and Sue put her basket in the sand...
