0:00:04 > 0:00:08Hello, there. How are you today?
0:00:08 > 0:00:13Salty and I have a tale or two to tell you about this beach,
0:00:13 > 0:00:15and the rockpools,
0:00:15 > 0:00:19and all the magical things that happen here.
0:00:26 > 0:00:27# Come with me
0:00:27 > 0:00:30# We're off to the sea to where I used to play
0:00:30 > 0:00:32# Looking back when I was a boy
0:00:32 > 0:00:35# And the fun we had each day
0:00:35 > 0:00:39# Over the cobbles and through the streets, playing in the sun
0:00:39 > 0:00:42# Friends to meet with games and treats
0:00:42 > 0:00:45# Adventures just begun
0:00:45 > 0:00:49# Stories from a magical world washed in by the sea
0:00:49 > 0:00:52# Meet the rockpool creatures there
0:00:52 > 0:00:55# It's amazing what you see
0:00:55 > 0:00:59# Looking back, when I was a boy
0:00:59 > 0:01:01# Shrimps and starfish, crabs and snails
0:01:01 > 0:01:04# In twinkly Rockpool Tales
0:01:06 > 0:01:09# Those lovely Rockpool Tales. #
0:01:14 > 0:01:19Ernie looks busy on the beach today.
0:01:19 > 0:01:22I think he's... He's looking for fossils!
0:01:24 > 0:01:27Yeah, I love fossils, I do.
0:01:27 > 0:01:32Yeah, got one here, somewhere. Where is it? Oh, there you are.
0:01:32 > 0:01:34What about that, Salty?
0:01:34 > 0:01:38That's a fossil. Yes, it is.
0:01:38 > 0:01:42Can you...can you see the pattern in the stone? Can you?
0:01:42 > 0:01:46That's the shape of a creature that lived here on Earth
0:01:46 > 0:01:53millions of years ago, and I found it on the beach in Staithes.
0:01:53 > 0:01:55I'll tell you the story, if you like.
0:01:55 > 0:02:00Yeah, it all happened when I was a boy,
0:02:00 > 0:02:03in a twinkly time, long, long ago.
0:02:06 > 0:02:10I used to run down to the beach as often as I could,
0:02:10 > 0:02:15meeting up with my best friends, Little Ernie and Little Sailor Sue.
0:02:20 > 0:02:24- Want to borrow my magnifying glass? - Yes, please.
0:02:24 > 0:02:28Little Sailor Sue's mother had lent her a magnifying glass
0:02:28 > 0:02:32so that we could play fossil hunters on the beach.
0:02:32 > 0:02:33SALTY BARKS
0:02:33 > 0:02:38Salty wants you to know that if you want to look for fossils too,
0:02:38 > 0:02:40you've got to be safe, right?
0:02:40 > 0:02:45Don't go near any cliffs where rocks might fall, right.
0:02:45 > 0:02:48Well, we started our search on the beach,
0:02:48 > 0:02:51looking carefully at every stone.
0:02:51 > 0:02:53This one's small and orange.
0:02:53 > 0:02:56I'm just clearing this one, and it's full of holes.
0:02:56 > 0:03:00And we had brushes, too, for brushing the dirt away,
0:03:00 > 0:03:03and crayons, and paper, to make rubbings.
0:03:03 > 0:03:05When we looked at the rocks,
0:03:05 > 0:03:08we found some very interesting-looking patterns.
0:03:08 > 0:03:11- I don't think there's any fossils here.- No.
0:03:11 > 0:03:14But none that we thought were fossils.
0:03:14 > 0:03:18So, we wandered over to our favourite rockpool.
0:03:18 > 0:03:22And as we gazed deep down into the glittery green water,
0:03:22 > 0:03:25a magical world appeared before our eyes.
0:03:28 > 0:03:31On this particular day,
0:03:31 > 0:03:35Sidney the Snail was making his way across the rockpool floor,
0:03:35 > 0:03:37very slowly.
0:03:38 > 0:03:45"It's not easy carrying your whole home on your back," he grumbled,
0:03:45 > 0:03:48and he let out a long sigh.
0:03:48 > 0:03:53Just then, he spied something unusual in the wet sand.
0:03:53 > 0:03:56It was an X-shape.
0:03:56 > 0:04:01Just as Sidney was wondering what it was, Sally the Starfish appeared.
0:04:01 > 0:04:04"Look at this, Sally! What does it mean?"
0:04:04 > 0:04:06"That's a letter X," she said.
0:04:06 > 0:04:09"If you see one of those on the ground,
0:04:09 > 0:04:13"it usually means there's buried treasure underneath it."
0:04:13 > 0:04:18"Ooh," said Sidney. "Oh, whoopee, let's dig it up!"
0:04:18 > 0:04:20"Leave it to me," said Sally.
0:04:20 > 0:04:23Well, she rushed off and she got the longest,
0:04:23 > 0:04:27scoopiest shell in her shell collection, and she started to dig,
0:04:27 > 0:04:32and Sally dug, and she dug, and she scooped out the sand.
0:04:32 > 0:04:36"Phew, very hard work," and she huffed and she puffed,
0:04:36 > 0:04:39and she started to go quite red in the face.
0:04:39 > 0:04:41"Oh, it's hard work!"
0:04:41 > 0:04:44And then suddenly... Clunk!
0:04:44 > 0:04:46"Is it treasure?" asked Sidney.
0:04:46 > 0:04:48"I hope so," said Sally,
0:04:48 > 0:04:51wiggling her shell to try to get it underneath.
0:04:51 > 0:04:55But just then... Oh, disaster!
0:04:55 > 0:05:01Sally's longest, scoopiest shell had somehow got utterly stuck
0:05:01 > 0:05:05and it didn't matter how hard she tried to wriggle it and jiggle it,
0:05:05 > 0:05:07it would not come free.
0:05:07 > 0:05:10"It will not budge, Sidney.
0:05:10 > 0:05:13"What...what shall I do?"
0:05:13 > 0:05:18"I think it's best to get help to pull it out," said Sidney.
0:05:18 > 0:05:21Suddenly, Belinda the Blenny appeared.
0:05:21 > 0:05:24"Ah, Belinda, help," cried Sally.
0:05:24 > 0:05:27"I was digging for treasure but now my shell is stuck
0:05:27 > 0:05:29"and I can't pull it out."
0:05:29 > 0:05:33"Treasure?" said Belinda, imagining shimmering silver.
0:05:33 > 0:05:37"Of course I'll help. I'm a very strong fish."
0:05:37 > 0:05:40Belinda held on to one of Sally's arms
0:05:40 > 0:05:42and they both pulled together.
0:05:43 > 0:05:45"Heave!
0:05:45 > 0:05:47"Heave!"
0:05:47 > 0:05:50But they couldn't pull the shell out.
0:05:50 > 0:05:54It was utterly stuck.
0:05:54 > 0:05:56Sheena the Shrimp swam up.
0:05:56 > 0:06:00"Can you help us pull out my shell, please, Sheena?
0:06:00 > 0:06:03"We might find treasure," called Sally.
0:06:03 > 0:06:05"Oh, yes, how exciting," said Sheena,
0:06:05 > 0:06:07imagining glittering gold.
0:06:07 > 0:06:10So she grabbed hold of Belinda's tail.
0:06:10 > 0:06:11"Heave!"
0:06:11 > 0:06:14But that shell would not move.
0:06:14 > 0:06:17It really was utterly stuck.
0:06:19 > 0:06:22When Bertrum the Butterfish found out what was going on,
0:06:22 > 0:06:26he helped out too, holding on to Sheena's tail with both fins.
0:06:26 > 0:06:28"Heave!"
0:06:28 > 0:06:31But the shell still wouldn't move.
0:06:31 > 0:06:35"I never thought this would be so difficult," said Sally.
0:06:35 > 0:06:38Then Buster the Crab came sidling along.
0:06:38 > 0:06:41"Snappers!" he said when he heard about the treasure.
0:06:41 > 0:06:44"Let's get pulling."
0:06:44 > 0:06:48But every time Buster tried to clamp onto Bertrum's tail,
0:06:48 > 0:06:51Bertrum said, "Ow!
0:06:51 > 0:06:55"Buster, stop it, you're nipping me with your claws."
0:06:55 > 0:06:58"Sorry, can't help it," Buster snapped.
0:06:58 > 0:07:01"I am a crab, and claws are what crabs have."
0:07:01 > 0:07:05Sally and Buster swapped places so that Buster was at the front
0:07:05 > 0:07:08and he couldn't accidentally pinch anyone.
0:07:08 > 0:07:11"One, two, three."
0:07:11 > 0:07:13"Heave!"
0:07:13 > 0:07:15They all heaved together.
0:07:15 > 0:07:16And, suddenly....
0:07:16 > 0:07:19"Whoa! Watch it.
0:07:19 > 0:07:20"Ouch!"
0:07:21 > 0:07:23..the shell came loose,
0:07:23 > 0:07:26and all the creatures toppled,
0:07:26 > 0:07:29falling backwards in a big pile.
0:07:29 > 0:07:32All the creatures except Sidney.
0:07:33 > 0:07:37At the same time, a rather large stone
0:07:37 > 0:07:42shot up out of the hole and high into the air.
0:07:42 > 0:07:44BOOF!
0:07:44 > 0:07:48The stone came down just in front of Sidney's nose,
0:07:48 > 0:07:50and he peered at it.
0:07:50 > 0:07:53"Is this our treasure?" he said.
0:07:53 > 0:07:56Everyone gathered around the stone.
0:07:56 > 0:07:59"It isn't silver," said Belinda.
0:07:59 > 0:08:01"Or gold," said Sheena.
0:08:01 > 0:08:05"But it's the best treasure of all," said Buster,
0:08:05 > 0:08:08gently brushing the sand with one of his claws.
0:08:08 > 0:08:10"Look at that pattern.
0:08:10 > 0:08:12"It's a fossil.
0:08:12 > 0:08:16"Fossils aren't ordinary stones," explained Buster.
0:08:16 > 0:08:19"They are very precious because you can see
0:08:19 > 0:08:22"the remains of creatures in them,
0:08:22 > 0:08:25"creatures that have lived here
0:08:25 > 0:08:28"in the sea a long, long, long,
0:08:28 > 0:08:30"long, long, long time ago."
0:08:30 > 0:08:33All the creatures gasped.
0:08:33 > 0:08:37"Look, Sidney," said Sally, examining the pattern on the rock.
0:08:37 > 0:08:40"This creature had a shell
0:08:40 > 0:08:42"a bit like yours."
0:08:42 > 0:08:43"Oh.
0:08:43 > 0:08:47"A creature a bit like me lived in the sea
0:08:47 > 0:08:48"a long, long, long,
0:08:48 > 0:08:52"long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long time ago,
0:08:52 > 0:08:56"and it had a swirly shell a bit like mine," said Sidney.
0:08:56 > 0:09:00And Sidney felt very proud of his shell.
0:09:00 > 0:09:02And he started to hum -
0:09:02 > 0:09:06a hum-hum hummity-hum-hum sort of tune.
0:09:07 > 0:09:11"I wonder if the fossil creature liked to sing, too,"
0:09:11 > 0:09:13Sidney mused.
0:09:13 > 0:09:17And he hummed happily for the rest of the day.
0:09:19 > 0:09:22We looked up from the rockpool
0:09:22 > 0:09:26and headed down to the beach to continue our fossil hunt.
0:09:26 > 0:09:29I was so busy looking on the ground
0:09:29 > 0:09:32that I bumped into Ernie, and we both went flying.
0:09:32 > 0:09:33OLD JACK LAUGHS
0:09:33 > 0:09:35That's when I saw it,
0:09:35 > 0:09:37right under my nose.
0:09:37 > 0:09:39What's this?
0:09:39 > 0:09:41We'd found our first-ever fossil.
0:09:43 > 0:09:45We've found a fossil!
0:09:47 > 0:09:50We all took turns to hold it.
0:09:50 > 0:09:53It felt cool and magical,
0:09:53 > 0:09:56as if you were holding time itself.
0:09:56 > 0:09:58Let's be dinosaurs.
0:09:58 > 0:10:00THEY ROAR
0:10:00 > 0:10:02And then we had great fun imagining
0:10:02 > 0:10:06we were weird and wonderful creatures
0:10:06 > 0:10:09all those millions of years ago,
0:10:09 > 0:10:12when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.
0:10:13 > 0:10:18Well, we played for the rest of the day until the tide came in
0:10:18 > 0:10:21and covered the rockpool,
0:10:21 > 0:10:23like a great, seaweedy blanket.
0:10:29 > 0:10:31And that is the tale
0:10:31 > 0:10:35of the wonderful and fascinating fossil.
0:10:36 > 0:10:39Very precious treasure, indeed. Yes.
0:10:39 > 0:10:40WOOF!
0:10:40 > 0:10:44It's not as precious as you, though, Salty.
0:10:44 > 0:10:48Come on, let's go and see if Ernie's found any today, shall we?
0:10:48 > 0:10:50You fancy that?
0:10:50 > 0:10:55Oh, come back soon for some more Rockpool Tales, won't you?
0:10:55 > 0:10:57Goodbye.
0:10:57 > 0:10:59Come on, girl. Are you coming?
0:11:06 > 0:11:07HE LAUGHS
