0:01:10 > 0:01:12TOOT!
0:01:13 > 0:01:15Oh, hello! Ha-ha!
0:01:15 > 0:01:19Salty and I just got back from a walk on the beach.
0:01:19 > 0:01:23We were investigating worm casts.
0:01:23 > 0:01:25Do you know what they are? No?
0:01:25 > 0:01:28Oh. Well, let me show you.
0:01:28 > 0:01:34This is my old sketchbook of Whitby wildlife.
0:01:34 > 0:01:37And that is a lugworm.
0:01:37 > 0:01:39You know, when the tide is out,
0:01:39 > 0:01:43you might see the little piles of sand that they make on the beach.
0:01:43 > 0:01:46Now, that's called a worm cast.
0:01:46 > 0:01:47And to see the worm,
0:01:47 > 0:01:51you need to dig down into the sand, where they live.
0:01:51 > 0:01:54Do you know, that reminds me of a story.
0:01:54 > 0:01:56Yes! Yeah, let me tell you.
0:01:59 > 0:02:02Well, it all happened when I was a boy
0:02:02 > 0:02:06in a twinkly time long, long ago.
0:02:06 > 0:02:08Ha-ha!
0:02:08 > 0:02:13I used to run down to the beach as often as I could.
0:02:13 > 0:02:17Meeting up with my best friends, Little Ernie and Little Sailor Sue.
0:02:25 > 0:02:29- We were walking along near the water's edge...- Look!
0:02:29 > 0:02:33..when Ernie bent down to have a look at a little spiral of sand.
0:02:33 > 0:02:37- "What's that?" he said. - It's a worm cast.
0:02:37 > 0:02:40And that means there are lugworms under the sand.
0:02:40 > 0:02:44I looked around. There were lots and lots of worm casts.
0:02:44 > 0:02:46I expect there are lots of lugworms.
0:02:46 > 0:02:49Ernie scratched his head.
0:02:49 > 0:02:54Just think, holes all over the sand where little lugworms live.
0:02:54 > 0:02:56Well, we all liked the idea of lots
0:02:56 > 0:02:59and lots of little holes on the beach,
0:02:59 > 0:03:04and we followed the line of worm casts all the way to the rockpools.
0:03:04 > 0:03:09And as we gazed deep down into the glittery water,
0:03:09 > 0:03:12a magical world appeared before our eyes.
0:03:19 > 0:03:24Once a year, Reginald the Great Wise Limpet, who lived up top,
0:03:24 > 0:03:27visited the rockpoolers below.
0:03:27 > 0:03:31Sally the Starfish and Andrew the Anemone were really excited.
0:03:31 > 0:03:34They whizzed around and around the rockpool.
0:03:34 > 0:03:37They kicked up sand and knocked over pebbles
0:03:37 > 0:03:40and scattered shells as they went.
0:03:40 > 0:03:44But one rockpooler was not so happy.
0:03:44 > 0:03:46Bertrum the Butterfish.
0:03:47 > 0:03:53Every year, he spent the entire day worrying about Reginald's visit.
0:03:53 > 0:03:57"This rockpool needs to be tidy today", he said to himself,
0:03:57 > 0:04:00as he set out with his broom and his trolley
0:04:00 > 0:04:03and his hat tilted at a determined angle.
0:04:03 > 0:04:06But when he saw the mess that Andrew and Sally had made,
0:04:06 > 0:04:10his hat wibbled a bit.
0:04:10 > 0:04:12Sally dashed over. "Hello, Bertrum.
0:04:12 > 0:04:15"We've been having fun whizzing around.
0:04:15 > 0:04:17"We were excited about Reginald's visit."
0:04:17 > 0:04:20"There will be no more whizzing", he said.
0:04:20 > 0:04:23"I need you two to help tidy up.
0:04:23 > 0:04:25"I want the rockpool to be amazing
0:04:25 > 0:04:29"and spectacular for Reginald's visit." And he left.
0:04:29 > 0:04:31Sally stared at the mess
0:04:31 > 0:04:34and she sighed as she picked up a pebble,
0:04:34 > 0:04:38placing it carefully on Bertrum's trolley.
0:04:39 > 0:04:42Bertrum's trolley wobbled.
0:04:42 > 0:04:44Then it wobbled again.
0:04:44 > 0:04:48Then one end of the trolley started to go up in the air.
0:04:48 > 0:04:52Sally and Andrew looked at each other in surprise
0:04:52 > 0:04:56and the trolley gave a lurch and tipped right over.
0:04:58 > 0:05:02Underneath was the face of a very long worm.
0:05:02 > 0:05:05"Hello", he said.
0:05:05 > 0:05:08"I'm Tony. I'm a lugworm."
0:05:08 > 0:05:11And he disappeared back down the hole.
0:05:11 > 0:05:15Sally and Andrew blinked.
0:05:15 > 0:05:18"Um...hello?" said Sally to the hole.
0:05:18 > 0:05:20"Are you still there?"
0:05:20 > 0:05:22"No, I'm over here."
0:05:22 > 0:05:27It was Tony again. He popped out of another hole right behind them.
0:05:27 > 0:05:29Sally and Andrew went over to him,
0:05:29 > 0:05:33but as soon as they did, he disappeared again.
0:05:33 > 0:05:35Then Andrew had and idea.
0:05:35 > 0:05:41"Sally, you stay by this hole and I'll go back to the first hole.
0:05:41 > 0:05:45"That way, one of us will catch him when he pops up again."
0:05:45 > 0:05:47So that's what they did.
0:05:47 > 0:05:50Sally shouted, "Hello?"
0:05:50 > 0:05:53Andrew shouted, "Hello?"
0:05:53 > 0:05:56And they waited.
0:05:56 > 0:05:57"Hello", said Tony.
0:05:57 > 0:06:00And he popped up out of another hole.
0:06:00 > 0:06:03Oh! He was fun.
0:06:03 > 0:06:06"You're very good at making holes", laughed Andrew.
0:06:06 > 0:06:09"I am", said Tony.
0:06:09 > 0:06:12"See if you can guess where I'll pop up next. Hoo!"
0:06:12 > 0:06:15Well, this was a wonderful game.
0:06:15 > 0:06:19Sally and Andrew whizzed around the rockpool,
0:06:19 > 0:06:23trying to guess which hole Tony would pop out of next.
0:06:23 > 0:06:27And Tony kept making new holes to pop out of,
0:06:27 > 0:06:32so it got harder and harder and more and more fun.
0:06:32 > 0:06:34Ha-ha-ha!
0:06:34 > 0:06:39Suddenly, Andrew saw Reginald making his way
0:06:39 > 0:06:42slowly down into the rockpool.
0:06:42 > 0:06:43"Ooo!" said Andrew.
0:06:43 > 0:06:46"Reginald's on his way and we haven't tidied up yet."
0:06:46 > 0:06:49Sally stopped and looked around.
0:06:49 > 0:06:52The rockpool was still a mess.
0:06:52 > 0:06:57And now, there were holes. Lots of holes everywhere!
0:06:57 > 0:06:59Tony popped up.
0:06:59 > 0:07:02"Are we still playing?" he said.
0:07:02 > 0:07:03"We can't", said Sally.
0:07:03 > 0:07:06"We're supposed to have tidied the rockpool
0:07:06 > 0:07:09"for Reginald's visitor, and look at it now!"
0:07:10 > 0:07:14Tony looked at all the holes he'd made,
0:07:14 > 0:07:18and just then, "How's that tidying coming along?" called Bertrum.
0:07:18 > 0:07:24Sally gazed out at the mess and the many, many holes.
0:07:24 > 0:07:30And she had an amazing, spectacular idea.
0:07:30 > 0:07:34"I'm off", she shouted, and she whizzed off, just like that.
0:07:34 > 0:07:37Bertrum looked at the mess.
0:07:37 > 0:07:40"Where did all these holes come from?" he said.
0:07:40 > 0:07:44Andrew and Tony were about to explain when...
0:07:44 > 0:07:48"I have arrived", a voice said.
0:07:48 > 0:07:50It was Reginald.
0:07:50 > 0:07:53Bertrum didn't know what to do.
0:07:53 > 0:07:58"Um...Reginald, how wonderful to see you! A-huh!
0:07:58 > 0:08:00"About the holes..."
0:08:00 > 0:08:04"I believe you have something amazing
0:08:04 > 0:08:08"and spectacular for me", said Reginald.
0:08:08 > 0:08:12"Well...", said Bertrum, wondering what he could possibly say.
0:08:12 > 0:08:16When suddenly, every single hole
0:08:16 > 0:08:21started to spout bubbles, like a fountain.
0:08:21 > 0:08:24Lots and lots of little fountains
0:08:24 > 0:08:28like bubbly firework displays all over the rockpool.
0:08:28 > 0:08:33It was amazing! And it was spectacular.
0:08:33 > 0:08:37"Wonderful! Wonderful! Bravo!"
0:08:37 > 0:08:41said Reginald, as Bertrum stared in disbelief.
0:08:41 > 0:08:46Then Sally floated back down to join everyone.
0:08:46 > 0:08:49"I asked Bluey the Whale
0:08:49 > 0:08:53"to blow water into the rockpool from underneath", she said.
0:08:53 > 0:08:56From out on the big, wide sea,
0:08:56 > 0:09:00they heard Bluey's enormous voice.
0:09:00 > 0:09:03"Hello!" he boomed.
0:09:03 > 0:09:06"I thought it might be a nice way
0:09:06 > 0:09:11"to use the holes our new friend Tony has made", said Sally.
0:09:11 > 0:09:17She had created a bubbly water display for Reginald.
0:09:17 > 0:09:22Reginald watched it and smiled,
0:09:22 > 0:09:25and smiled, and smiled.
0:09:25 > 0:09:30Even Bertrum smiled, because this really was amazing,
0:09:30 > 0:09:32and spectacular.
0:09:32 > 0:09:36And the best visit from Reginald ever.
0:09:36 > 0:09:39Ha-ha! And Sally and Andrew smiled, too,
0:09:39 > 0:09:45because they had made a new friend, Tony the Lugworm.
0:09:45 > 0:09:47The maker of holes.
0:09:49 > 0:09:53We looked up from the rockpool, grabbed our buckets and spades
0:09:53 > 0:09:57and ran off down the beach to go digging.
0:09:57 > 0:09:58Look!
0:09:58 > 0:10:01Guess what I've found? A wiggly, wiggly lugworm!
0:10:01 > 0:10:04Hello, Tony!
0:10:04 > 0:10:09I put our Tony back and watched him wriggle away,
0:10:09 > 0:10:11burrowing deep down into the sand.
0:10:13 > 0:10:16And we carried on down the beach, going digging,
0:10:16 > 0:10:20looking for creatures that live on the seashore...
0:10:21 > 0:10:23..until the tide came in
0:10:23 > 0:10:28and covered the rockpool like a great seaweedy blanket.
0:10:34 > 0:10:38Your old blanket's got a lot of holes, too, hasn't it, Salty?
0:10:38 > 0:10:42Oh, dear! Look at it! I don't know what you've been doing.
0:10:42 > 0:10:44I don't think that's lugworms, either.
0:10:44 > 0:10:47We're just getting on a bit now, aren't we, girl?
0:10:47 > 0:10:53Well, you join us for some more Rockpool Tales next time. Goodbye.
