0:01:10 > 0:01:11TOOT!
0:01:13 > 0:01:20Ha-ha-ha. Oh, it's a twinkly, sunshiny sort of day today, Salty.
0:01:20 > 0:01:26Oh, I've been using this old telescope to look at the sea.
0:01:26 > 0:01:31You can see all sorts of twinkles out there today, Salty.
0:01:31 > 0:01:33Oh, beautiful.
0:01:33 > 0:01:36Ha-ha! Lovely.
0:01:38 > 0:01:41Ah, you like the waves on the sea
0:01:41 > 0:01:43when they twinkle, don't you, Salty?
0:01:43 > 0:01:50Oh, I remember a story about the twinkles on the sea.
0:01:52 > 0:01:55It all happened when I was a boy
0:01:55 > 0:01:59in a twinkly time...long, long ago.
0:01:59 > 0:02:05Ha-ha! I used to run down to the beach as often as I could,
0:02:05 > 0:02:10meeting up with my best friends, Little Ernie and Little Sailor Sue.
0:02:18 > 0:02:23One day, we were all standing at the water's edge with my old telescope.
0:02:23 > 0:02:26Of course, it was new back then.
0:02:26 > 0:02:30And we were taking it in turns to look at the waves on the sea.
0:02:30 > 0:02:33- What do you think makes the waves twinkle?- That's easy.
0:02:33 > 0:02:37It's the sunlight on the waves that makes them twinkle.
0:02:37 > 0:02:40But Ernie thought about this and then he said,
0:02:40 > 0:02:43"Ah, but what makes them twinkle at night?"
0:02:43 > 0:02:47That's easy. At night it's the light from the moon.
0:02:48 > 0:02:50Then Sue took the telescope
0:02:50 > 0:02:53and had a look through it at the rockpools.
0:02:53 > 0:02:56Look, even the rockpools are twinkling in the sunlight.
0:02:56 > 0:03:00And with that, we raced across the beach to look at the light
0:03:00 > 0:03:01on the rockpools.
0:03:01 > 0:03:05And as we gazed deep down into the glittery waters,
0:03:05 > 0:03:09a magical world appeared before our eyes.
0:03:12 > 0:03:14Swimming in the rockpool,
0:03:14 > 0:03:18Belinda the Blenny saw a little flash of light.
0:03:18 > 0:03:23It flitted around and disappeared - shwoop - behind a shell.
0:03:23 > 0:03:27She went to investigate and, as she did so,
0:03:27 > 0:03:30it popped out again and flitted off.
0:03:30 > 0:03:35Belinda thought the little flash of light wanted to play,
0:03:35 > 0:03:38so she dashed after it.
0:03:38 > 0:03:41She chased it through the slippery seaweed,
0:03:41 > 0:03:46past the coloured pebbles and up to the surface of the sunny rockpool.
0:03:46 > 0:03:49And there, it settled on a rock.
0:03:51 > 0:03:53Belinda swam over to have a closer look.
0:03:53 > 0:03:58She wanted to know what this little flash of light was.
0:03:58 > 0:04:02"That is a twinkle," said a low voice.
0:04:03 > 0:04:06It was Reginald the Great Wise Limpet.
0:04:06 > 0:04:11"Hello, little twinkle," said Belinda quietly.
0:04:11 > 0:04:17As she spoke, the little twinkle's light started to fade,
0:04:17 > 0:04:21then got brighter, and then faded again, as if it was tired.
0:04:21 > 0:04:27There was a cloud passing over the sun, and when the sun disappears,
0:04:27 > 0:04:29twinkles start to disappear, too.
0:04:29 > 0:04:32Luckily, the cloud moved on
0:04:32 > 0:04:37and the sun shone and the twinkle twinkled brightly again.
0:04:38 > 0:04:43Belinda smiled. "I think it likes me," she said.
0:04:43 > 0:04:47"Oh, I'm sure it does," said Reginald.
0:04:47 > 0:04:49"Twinkles are very friendly."
0:04:49 > 0:04:54"Where do twinkles come from?" asked Belinda.
0:04:54 > 0:04:57Reginald came up with an answer.
0:04:57 > 0:05:00Now, I'm not sure, Salty, that he actually knew,
0:05:00 > 0:05:05but, nevertheless, Reginald answered Belinda's question.
0:05:05 > 0:05:09"A twinkle factory. That's where they come from,"
0:05:09 > 0:05:12Reginald said with confidence.
0:05:12 > 0:05:19"The twinkles are made in a twinkle factory far, far out at sea.
0:05:19 > 0:05:24"They pop up into the air, out of the factory's chimneys.
0:05:24 > 0:05:29"When they fall back down again, they are scattered all over the sea.
0:05:29 > 0:05:33"In fact, twinkles seem to get everywhere."
0:05:33 > 0:05:39Well, Belinda thought that the twinkle factory sounded magical.
0:05:39 > 0:05:43She looked over at the twinkle.
0:05:43 > 0:05:47"I wonder if it wants to play chase again," she thought.
0:05:47 > 0:05:51So, she wriggled over to the rock where the twinkle sat,
0:05:51 > 0:05:56but, as she got close up to it - shwoop - it was off again.
0:05:56 > 0:06:00It flickered across the watery surface of the rockpool,
0:06:00 > 0:06:03then it dived down and disappeared
0:06:03 > 0:06:05under the water.
0:06:05 > 0:06:09"Hey-hey, little twinkle," laughed Belinda. "Come back!"
0:06:09 > 0:06:13And she dashed after it, down into the rockpool.
0:06:13 > 0:06:15Whoosh!
0:06:15 > 0:06:19Belinda whooshed past, leaving a trail of bubbles behind her,
0:06:19 > 0:06:22and then - whoosh - Belinda whooshed past
0:06:22 > 0:06:24in the opposite direction,
0:06:24 > 0:06:27leaving another trail of bubbles behind her.
0:06:27 > 0:06:30"What was that?" laughed Andrew the Anemone.
0:06:30 > 0:06:33"That was Belinda," said Sally the Starfish.
0:06:33 > 0:06:36"Let's go and find out what she's doing."
0:06:36 > 0:06:40Oh, so they both went off to find out.
0:06:40 > 0:06:44And they found Belinda hiding behind a rock.
0:06:44 > 0:06:46"Hi, Belinda," they said.
0:06:46 > 0:06:51"Shush!" said Belinda. "I don't want to scare it away."
0:06:51 > 0:06:54"Scare what away?" asked Andrew.
0:06:54 > 0:06:58"That twinkle," said Belinda quietly.
0:06:58 > 0:07:02Well, Sally and Andrew looked, and, sure enough,
0:07:02 > 0:07:07there was a little twinkle sitting on an upturned seashell.
0:07:07 > 0:07:10"We've been playing chase," said Belinda,
0:07:10 > 0:07:13"but I haven't managed to catch it yet."
0:07:13 > 0:07:17Sally saw the twinkle darting up the side of the rockpool.
0:07:17 > 0:07:19"There it goes!" she said.
0:07:19 > 0:07:23And the three friends chased the twinkle.
0:07:23 > 0:07:27It whizzed here and there and up and down and round and about
0:07:27 > 0:07:29but they couldn't catch that twinkle,
0:07:29 > 0:07:32no matter how hard they tried.
0:07:32 > 0:07:36"This is a brilliant game!" laughed Andrew, as they spun around.
0:07:36 > 0:07:40And then - bop, bop, bop -
0:07:40 > 0:07:44they all popped their heads out of the surface of the rockpool.
0:07:44 > 0:07:49The little twinkle was sat on Reginald's head.
0:07:49 > 0:07:52"Don't move!" called Belinda. "It's on your head!"
0:07:52 > 0:07:56As Reginald looked up at the twinkle,
0:07:56 > 0:07:59a cloud rolled over the sun
0:07:59 > 0:08:02and the little twinkle faded, faded...
0:08:04 > 0:08:06..and then disappeared.
0:08:06 > 0:08:09Andrew, Sally and Belinda swam over.
0:08:10 > 0:08:13"The twinkle's gone," said Belinda
0:08:13 > 0:08:15in a little voice.
0:08:15 > 0:08:17And she was right.
0:08:17 > 0:08:18It had.
0:08:18 > 0:08:21Andrew and Sally looked sad.
0:08:21 > 0:08:25They'd enjoyed their game with the little twinkle.
0:08:25 > 0:08:29Reginald looked at the three friends and smiled.
0:08:29 > 0:08:34"I expect the twinkle factory will make another twinkle
0:08:34 > 0:08:36"for you to chase," he said.
0:08:36 > 0:08:40And at that moment, do you know what happened?
0:08:41 > 0:08:44The cloud moved away,
0:08:44 > 0:08:49leaving the sun in a clear blue sky shining down on the rockpool.
0:08:50 > 0:08:56"There," said Reginald. "Now look behind you."
0:08:57 > 0:09:00The three friends turned.
0:09:00 > 0:09:03And dancing on the surface of the rockpool
0:09:03 > 0:09:07were hundreds and hundreds of twinkles
0:09:07 > 0:09:10all wanting to be chased.
0:09:10 > 0:09:13Sally and Andrew whooped with delight
0:09:13 > 0:09:16and they rushed off to continue their game.
0:09:16 > 0:09:19Belinda stayed beside Reginald for a moment.
0:09:19 > 0:09:22"Thank you, Reginald," she said.
0:09:22 > 0:09:26"This has been the best day ever.
0:09:26 > 0:09:29"Will you say thank you to the twinkle factory?"
0:09:29 > 0:09:32"Of course I will," smiled Reginald.
0:09:32 > 0:09:36And then Belinda dashed off to join the others.
0:09:36 > 0:09:39We looked up from the rockpool.
0:09:39 > 0:09:42Sue put her fingers in the water
0:09:42 > 0:09:46and twinkles skipped across the surface.
0:09:46 > 0:09:47You know what?
0:09:47 > 0:09:51Sue loved the idea of the twinkle factory.
0:09:51 > 0:09:56I lent her my telescope and she gazed out at the distant sea.
0:09:56 > 0:10:01I think one of those twinkles out there is our rockpool's twinkle.
0:10:01 > 0:10:02Ernie and I smiled.
0:10:02 > 0:10:05She was probably right.
0:10:05 > 0:10:08"You know what else that telescope is good for?" I said.
0:10:10 > 0:10:13- Playing pirates! - "Playing pirates!" said Ernie.
0:10:13 > 0:10:15You can't catch me!
0:10:15 > 0:10:18- Arr, me hearties!- Land ahoy!
0:10:18 > 0:10:20And we played pirates on the beach...
0:10:20 > 0:10:22Arr, I'll be lookout!
0:10:22 > 0:10:26..until the tide started to come in and cover the rockpool
0:10:26 > 0:10:29like a great seaweedy blanket.
0:10:35 > 0:10:38Well, what do YOU think?
0:10:38 > 0:10:43Do the twinkles on the sea come from a twinkle factory?
0:10:43 > 0:10:45Maybe.
0:10:45 > 0:10:46Who knows?
0:10:48 > 0:10:50SALTY BARKS
0:10:51 > 0:10:58So, why don't you join us for some more Rockpool Tales next time?
0:10:58 > 0:10:59Goodbye.
