0:00:53 > 0:00:56Oh, where is it, Salty?
0:00:56 > 0:00:59I know I've seen it somewhere.
0:00:59 > 0:01:03Hello. We're trying to find the one thing I need for today's story
0:01:03 > 0:01:09and it should be here somewhere in all this old sport stuff.
0:01:09 > 0:01:11I don't know.
0:01:11 > 0:01:13Where are you going?
0:01:14 > 0:01:17Oh, oh, you clever girl.
0:01:17 > 0:01:21You've got it, haven't you? You clever dog. She's got it.
0:01:21 > 0:01:24That is my old tennis ball.
0:01:24 > 0:01:29Ah, good. Now I can tell you the story
0:01:29 > 0:01:32about the time we used that old ball for a game of cricket
0:01:32 > 0:01:34on the beach.
0:01:34 > 0:01:37It all happened when I was a boy,
0:01:37 > 0:01:40in a twinkly time long, long ago.
0:01:42 > 0:01:45In those days I used to run down to play on the beach
0:01:45 > 0:01:47as often as I could,
0:01:47 > 0:01:52meeting up with my best friends, Little Ernie and Little Sailor Sue.
0:01:53 > 0:01:58Ernie had planted pieces of driftwood upright in the sand
0:01:58 > 0:02:00to be our stumps.
0:02:00 > 0:02:02Sue had her cricket bat with her
0:02:02 > 0:02:06and I was trying to knock over the driftwood with my tennis ball.
0:02:06 > 0:02:09I ran up and bowled the ball.
0:02:09 > 0:02:10Whack!
0:02:10 > 0:02:13Sue sent the ball whizzing across the sand.
0:02:13 > 0:02:15"Come on, Sue," I said.
0:02:15 > 0:02:17"You've been in bat all day."
0:02:17 > 0:02:20She was really very good.
0:02:20 > 0:02:23Ernie threw the ball back to me and I bowled the ball again,
0:02:23 > 0:02:25this time as fast as I could.
0:02:25 > 0:02:30Sue took a big swing at it and, whack,
0:02:30 > 0:02:33the ball sailed up in the air and disappeared,
0:02:33 > 0:02:37plop, in the middle of the rock pools.
0:02:37 > 0:02:39Well, we dashed over to find it
0:02:39 > 0:02:42but there are a lot of rock pools in Staithes.
0:02:42 > 0:02:44It was going to be a long hunt.
0:02:44 > 0:02:48"Perhaps it's down here somewhere," said Sue.
0:02:48 > 0:02:54So, we knelt down and gazed deep down into the glittery waters
0:02:54 > 0:02:59and there a magical world appeared before our eyes.
0:03:03 > 0:03:06One morning, Sally the starfish popped her head
0:03:06 > 0:03:10out of the rock pool for a quick look around.
0:03:10 > 0:03:15Floating nearby on the surface was a large round thingummybob.
0:03:16 > 0:03:21"What is that?" she asked Reginald the great, wise limpet.
0:03:21 > 0:03:25Reginald looked at it for a moment and sighed.
0:03:25 > 0:03:28"It's a tennis ball.
0:03:28 > 0:03:33"The blobfish who live out in the big wide sea like to play catch.
0:03:33 > 0:03:39"Their tennis balls are always landing in the rock pool."
0:03:39 > 0:03:40"Wow," thought Sally.
0:03:40 > 0:03:42"I must tell my friends."
0:03:42 > 0:03:45And she dashed off.
0:03:45 > 0:03:51Now, down below, another rock pooler had also spotted the tennis ball.
0:03:51 > 0:03:54"Oh, we can't have that," he said.
0:03:54 > 0:03:57It was Bertram, the butterfish.
0:03:57 > 0:03:59"Very untidy. It'll have to go.
0:03:59 > 0:04:03"Buster, get the honker. There's a job to do.
0:04:03 > 0:04:05"Buster!"
0:04:05 > 0:04:07And he bustled off.
0:04:07 > 0:04:10Soon there was a clinking and a clanking sound
0:04:10 > 0:04:14and a strange machine was wheeled out.
0:04:14 > 0:04:17It was the seagull honker.
0:04:17 > 0:04:19SALTY BARKS Yes, I know, Salty.
0:04:19 > 0:04:23We know it was just an old car hooter, really, don't we?
0:04:23 > 0:04:28Anyway, it was being pushed by Bertram and it was very heavy.
0:04:29 > 0:04:33"There, that should do it," said Bertram.
0:04:33 > 0:04:36He looked up at the tennis ball floating above and then
0:04:36 > 0:04:39he looked over at the top of a rock where Buster the crab
0:04:39 > 0:04:42now stood with a small boulder.
0:04:42 > 0:04:45"Ready when you are," called out Buster.
0:04:45 > 0:04:48"Push," shouted Bertram.
0:04:48 > 0:04:54Buster pushed the boulder and it dropped straight down with a plip
0:04:54 > 0:04:59right onto the squishy end of the seagull honker.
0:04:59 > 0:05:02It gave a "too-choo"
0:05:02 > 0:05:05and shot a huge jet of air upwards through the shell.
0:05:05 > 0:05:10The jet of air hit the tennis ball and with a "la-loop"
0:05:10 > 0:05:14it popped out of the rock pool and landed on the rocks nearby.
0:05:15 > 0:05:19"There," said a very satisfied Bertram.
0:05:19 > 0:05:20"Job done."
0:05:20 > 0:05:23Meanwhile, Sally had dragged her friends away
0:05:23 > 0:05:28from a game of hide-and-seek to show them the tennis ball.
0:05:28 > 0:05:32Andrew the anemone and Belinda the blenny gazed up.
0:05:32 > 0:05:35The tennis ball was gone.
0:05:35 > 0:05:38"Are you sure you saw something?" said Andrew.
0:05:38 > 0:05:40"Yes," said Sally
0:05:40 > 0:05:42but she had no idea where it was now.
0:05:42 > 0:05:46Well, Andrew and Belinda decided to head back to their game
0:05:46 > 0:05:49and Sally was left all alone.
0:05:49 > 0:05:56Now, at that moment a cheeky seagull landed beside the rock pool.
0:05:56 > 0:06:01It saw the tennis ball and thought it might make a tasty treat
0:06:01 > 0:06:04so it tipped its hat... SALTY BARKS
0:06:04 > 0:06:08Yes, Salty, all the seagulls in Staithes have hats, don't they?
0:06:08 > 0:06:10It's funny that, yes.
0:06:10 > 0:06:13Anyway, it picked the tennis ball up in its beak
0:06:13 > 0:06:17and flapped off into the sky.
0:06:17 > 0:06:20But the tennis ball was way too big for the seagull's beak
0:06:20 > 0:06:24and after a moment he squawked and dropped it.
0:06:25 > 0:06:29The tennis ball tumbled back down and landed, splosh,
0:06:29 > 0:06:31back in the rock pool.
0:06:31 > 0:06:33Sally looked up.
0:06:33 > 0:06:37"Oh, the tennis ball, it's back," she shouted
0:06:37 > 0:06:39and she dashed off to tell her friends.
0:06:39 > 0:06:42Well, Bertram heard Sally's shout, too,
0:06:42 > 0:06:45and he looked out of his doorway and sighed.
0:06:45 > 0:06:48"Oh, Buster," he called.
0:06:48 > 0:06:51"It's back. Get a bigger bolder."
0:06:53 > 0:06:58Once again Bertram and Buster wheeled the seagull honker outside.
0:06:58 > 0:07:02This time, Buster heaved a medium-sized boulder
0:07:02 > 0:07:04right onto the squishy end.
0:07:04 > 0:07:07There was a mighty "sha-boosh"
0:07:07 > 0:07:12and the tennis ball was sent spinning out of the rock pool.
0:07:12 > 0:07:17It landed on a seaweedy piece of sand far away.
0:07:17 > 0:07:20"There," said a very satisfied Bertram.
0:07:20 > 0:07:22"Job done."
0:07:22 > 0:07:27Meanwhile, Sally had brought her friends back to see the tennis ball.
0:07:27 > 0:07:30"There. Look," smiled Sally.
0:07:30 > 0:07:34"But where is it?" Asked Belinda quietly.
0:07:34 > 0:07:35They looked up.
0:07:35 > 0:07:38The tennis ball had gone.
0:07:38 > 0:07:39"It was there.
0:07:39 > 0:07:42"I'm sure it was," cried Sally.
0:07:42 > 0:07:47Andrew and Belinda shook their heads and went back to their game.
0:07:47 > 0:07:49Sally didn't know what to do.
0:07:49 > 0:07:54Now, the tennis ball didn't stay long on the seaweedy piece of sand
0:07:54 > 0:07:58because a little girl called Sue found it
0:07:58 > 0:08:03and Sue was practising her cricket shots.
0:08:03 > 0:08:07She threw the ball up in the air and, whack,
0:08:07 > 0:08:09hit it with the cricket bat.
0:08:09 > 0:08:12It sailed up, up, up into the air
0:08:12 > 0:08:15and do you know where it landed?
0:08:15 > 0:08:20Yes, you're right. Yes, right back in the rock pool where it started.
0:08:20 > 0:08:22Splosh.
0:08:22 > 0:08:25Oh, Reginald closed a weary eye.
0:08:25 > 0:08:30There were a lot of tennis balls landing in his rock pool today.
0:08:30 > 0:08:35Down below, Sally heard the splosh of the tennis ball landing
0:08:35 > 0:08:37and she looked up.
0:08:37 > 0:08:39"It's back!" she yelled.
0:08:39 > 0:08:41"My tennis ball is back."
0:08:42 > 0:08:49This time, Andrew and Belinda came rushing over and they saw it, too.
0:08:49 > 0:08:52SALTY BARKS Yes, I know, I know, Salty.
0:08:52 > 0:08:57You're not the only one who gets excited about tennis balls.
0:08:57 > 0:08:59"Wow," said Andrew.
0:08:59 > 0:09:02"You were right. That's amazing."
0:09:02 > 0:09:04Sally was very pleased.
0:09:04 > 0:09:08"It's come back to see me," she smiled.
0:09:08 > 0:09:11But just as she was speaking,
0:09:11 > 0:09:13"Heave!"
0:09:13 > 0:09:18They all heard the sound of Buster giving his mightiest heave.
0:09:18 > 0:09:23This time he was pushing a huge boulder.
0:09:23 > 0:09:28It landed with a mighty "floop" on the squishy end
0:09:28 > 0:09:30of the seagull honker and
0:09:30 > 0:09:33"fwoo-shoo",
0:09:33 > 0:09:35a jet of air hit the tennis ball
0:09:35 > 0:09:37and it flew out of the rock pool high,
0:09:37 > 0:09:41high in the air and landed far, far away
0:09:41 > 0:09:43in the big wide sea.
0:09:43 > 0:09:47"Perfect," said a very satisfied Bertram.
0:09:47 > 0:09:50"That's got rid of it once and for all."
0:09:50 > 0:09:54"No," cried Sally. "My tennis ball.
0:09:54 > 0:09:56"It's gone forever."
0:09:56 > 0:10:01Well, although Bertram was only trying to keep the rock pool tidy,
0:10:01 > 0:10:04he didn't like to see Sally looking sad.
0:10:06 > 0:10:08"You know, Sally," he said.
0:10:08 > 0:10:13"Tennis balls don't really belong in rock pools.
0:10:13 > 0:10:16"Why don't you go and see where it is now?"
0:10:18 > 0:10:21So, Sally swam up to the surface,
0:10:21 > 0:10:26crawled onto the rocks using all of the suckers on her little arms
0:10:26 > 0:10:29and she sat gazing out to sea.
0:10:29 > 0:10:32"I'll never see it again," she sighed.
0:10:34 > 0:10:38But then, there was a distant "boing"
0:10:38 > 0:10:42and suddenly the tennis ball flew up in the air.
0:10:43 > 0:10:47Sally stared and do you know what you saw?
0:10:47 > 0:10:50SALTY BARKS Yes, that's right, Salty. Yes.
0:10:50 > 0:10:56She saw two very, very happy blobfish playing a lovely game of catch.
0:10:57 > 0:11:00They had got their ball back again.
0:11:00 > 0:11:04So, Bertram's seagull honker
0:11:04 > 0:11:07had been helpful after all.
0:11:08 > 0:11:11Well, Sally was thrilled.
0:11:11 > 0:11:15Yes, the tennis ball was doing what tennis balls do best,
0:11:15 > 0:11:17bouncing and whizzing around
0:11:17 > 0:11:19and the two blobfish,
0:11:19 > 0:11:23they were having the time of their lives.
0:11:23 > 0:11:28"My tennis ball has gone to a very happy home," smiled Sally
0:11:28 > 0:11:31and she watched the blobfish play catch
0:11:31 > 0:11:35all day long until the sun finally dipped down into the sea
0:11:35 > 0:11:38and disappeared behind the horizon.
0:11:41 > 0:11:44Now, while we had been gazing into the rock pool,
0:11:44 > 0:11:47do you know what had happened?
0:11:47 > 0:11:50A seagull had found my tennis ball,
0:11:50 > 0:11:52picked it up in his beak
0:11:52 > 0:11:54and flown off into the sky.
0:11:54 > 0:11:58"Look," shouted Ernie, "That's the tennis ball."
0:11:58 > 0:12:03As it flew over the beach, it let out a squawk and, of course,
0:12:03 > 0:12:06it let go of the tennis ball.
0:12:06 > 0:12:10You knew that was going to happen, didn't you? Yes, of course you did.
0:12:10 > 0:12:13The tennis ball dropped right onto the driftwood
0:12:13 > 0:12:17we were using as stumps and knocked it down.
0:12:17 > 0:12:20Well, Ernie and I almost fell over laughing.
0:12:20 > 0:12:23"I think you're finally out," I said to Sue.
0:12:23 > 0:12:27"Well, I'm not sure that's in the rules," she replied
0:12:27 > 0:12:30but she was laughing. too.
0:12:30 > 0:12:34So she let me and Ernie have a go at batting
0:12:34 > 0:12:39and we played and played until the tide started to come in
0:12:39 > 0:12:43and covered the rock pool like a great seaweedy blanket.
0:12:53 > 0:12:55OLD JACK LAUGHS
0:12:55 > 0:12:56Go on, Salty.
0:12:57 > 0:13:00She's been wanting to do that all day.
0:13:00 > 0:13:06So, why don't you join us for some more Rockpool Tales next time?
0:13:06 > 0:13:08What a good girl. Good girl.
0:13:08 > 0:13:09Goodbye.
0:13:09 > 0:13:11Come on, then.
0:13:13 > 0:13:14Are you ready? Are you ready?
0:13:14 > 0:13:16Go on, Salty.
