0:00:56 > 0:00:57Oh, dear!

0:00:57 > 0:01:00- Hello. - JACK CHUCKLES

0:01:00 > 0:01:04- Oh, dearie me. What a day. Oh! - HONKING

0:01:04 > 0:01:05SALTY WHIMPERS

0:01:05 > 0:01:07JACK SIGHS

0:01:08 > 0:01:11Did you put that there, Salty?

0:01:11 > 0:01:15Well, now, this is a funny old thing, this is.

0:01:15 > 0:01:20This is the old car hooter I had when I was young.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22Oh, I had a lot of fun with this, I did.

0:01:22 > 0:01:26Would you like to hear the story of this car hooter?

0:01:26 > 0:01:28- Would you, Salty? - SALTY BARKS

0:01:28 > 0:01:30- All right, then. - JACK LAUGHS

0:01:30 > 0:01:33It all happened when I was a boy

0:01:33 > 0:01:37in a twinkly time, long, long ago.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40In those days, I used to run down

0:01:40 > 0:01:44to play on the beach as often as I could,

0:01:44 > 0:01:49meeting up with my best friends, Little Ernie and Little Sailor Sue.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53On this particular day, as we walked down to the rockpools,

0:01:53 > 0:01:56- I was making a lot of noise. - HONKING

0:01:56 > 0:01:58JACK MIMICS HOOTER

0:01:58 > 0:02:00"What's that?" asked Ernie.

0:02:00 > 0:02:04"It's a car hooter I found. Makes a great sound," I said.

0:02:04 > 0:02:09As we walked over to the rockpools, we talked about the things we liked.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12I liked finding things that made different sounds.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15Sue, she liked collecting stamps.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18And Ernie... Well, Ernie, he liked ice cream.

0:02:18 > 0:02:22"In fact," he said, "I want one right now.

0:02:22 > 0:02:27"I wonder if my dad will buy me one?" And he dashed off to find out.

0:02:27 > 0:02:33Well, Sue and I...thought we would keep going to the rockpools.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35So off we ran.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38We scrabbled over to the rocks

0:02:38 > 0:02:43until we found ourselves gazing at the still surface of a rockpool.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48We gazed deep down into the glittery waters...

0:02:48 > 0:02:55and there...a magical world appeared before our eyes.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57BUBBLING

0:02:57 > 0:03:00One morning, the big, wide sea

0:03:00 > 0:03:03washed an old car hooter into the rockpool.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05To Andrew the Anemone

0:03:05 > 0:03:10the object looked like a large shell with a fat black end.

0:03:10 > 0:03:15"Look at this," Andrew said to his best friend, Sally the Starfish.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17"It's very big," replied Sally.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21At that moment, Bertrum the Butterfish bustled past

0:03:21 > 0:03:22looking a bit flustered.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25"Can you tell us what it is?" asked Andrew.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27"I don't know," replied Bertrum.

0:03:27 > 0:03:32He was so agitated his hat kept bouncing off his head as he spoke.

0:03:32 > 0:03:36"Have you seen what's going on up there?"

0:03:36 > 0:03:40Andrew and Sally looked up to the surface of the rockpool

0:03:40 > 0:03:45and there, gazing down at them through the shivery water,

0:03:45 > 0:03:49was the enormous face... of a seagull.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52Bertrum looked worried. "Those seagulls

0:03:52 > 0:03:56"get very interested in rockpools when the tide's gone out.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59"Sometimes they're looking for something to eat,

0:03:59 > 0:04:03"and sometimes they just want to take things back to their nests.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05"It's best for us rockpoolers

0:04:05 > 0:04:08"to keep away and wait for them to go away.

0:04:08 > 0:04:10"So, please, don't bother me

0:04:10 > 0:04:14"with questions and quash-tions about that...thing!"

0:04:14 > 0:04:19And Bertrum dashed off, looking for something to scare away the seagull.

0:04:19 > 0:04:23Andrew and Sally gazed at the hooter.

0:04:23 > 0:04:27They really, really wanted to find out what it was.

0:04:27 > 0:04:31And the best creature to answer questions and quash-tions

0:04:31 > 0:04:35was Reginald the Great Wise Limpet.

0:04:35 > 0:04:39But he lived on a rock by the edge of the rockpool,

0:04:39 > 0:04:41right where the seagull was.

0:04:41 > 0:04:46Well, just then, they were interrupted by a small voice.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49"Maybe it's a shell."

0:04:49 > 0:04:51It was Buster the Hermit Crab.

0:04:51 > 0:04:55He scuttled over to look at the hooter.

0:04:55 > 0:04:59"This would make the perfect new home for me."

0:04:59 > 0:05:03Now, hermit crabs borrow shells to live in.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06And then when they grow too large,

0:05:06 > 0:05:09they move out of that shell and into a bigger one.

0:05:09 > 0:05:14Buster clambered out of his shell and into the hooter

0:05:14 > 0:05:19and after a brief scrabble, he popped his head back out.

0:05:19 > 0:05:22"This is perfect," he smiled.

0:05:22 > 0:05:26"Well, that's it, then," laughed Andrew, "now we know what it is.

0:05:26 > 0:05:30"It's Buster's new home."

0:05:30 > 0:05:33But just then Bertrum bustled back.

0:05:33 > 0:05:37"Is that thing still here?" he said. "It really must go."

0:05:37 > 0:05:40Sally and Andrew looked at each other.

0:05:40 > 0:05:44"But it makes the perfect shell for Buster to live in," said Andrew.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47"It doesn't belong here," sniffed Bertrum.

0:05:47 > 0:05:51"There are plenty of other shells in the rockpool Buster could use.

0:05:51 > 0:05:56"It's big and shiny and seagulls are very interested in shiny things.

0:05:56 > 0:05:58"It has to go!"

0:05:58 > 0:06:03And with a wary look at the seagull above, Bertrum dashed off again.

0:06:03 > 0:06:07Buster was very sad, he didn't want to get rid of his new home.

0:06:07 > 0:06:11He was already planning to have a sofa delivered.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14"What are we going to do?" said Andrew.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17Sally knew what to do.

0:06:17 > 0:06:22They needed to get some advice from Reginald the Great Wise Limpet.

0:06:22 > 0:06:26"But he's up there and so's the seagull," said Andrew.

0:06:26 > 0:06:31"Then, we'll just have to be careful," smiled Sally.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35So, the two brave but nervous friends

0:06:35 > 0:06:38swam up to the surface of the rockpool,

0:06:38 > 0:06:42hiding in the seaweed so the seagull couldn't see them.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45When they arrived, the seagull

0:06:45 > 0:06:49was walking around on his long, spindly legs.

0:06:49 > 0:06:54Sally noticed a large leaf floating nearby.

0:06:54 > 0:06:59"Let's hide under that and paddle across to Reginald," she said.

0:06:59 > 0:07:04"The seagull will think it's just a leaf floating on the water."

0:07:04 > 0:07:08So the little rockpoolers squeezed together underneath the leaf

0:07:08 > 0:07:13and they slowly made their way over to the rock where Reginald lived.

0:07:13 > 0:07:16Meanwhile, the seagull had stopped

0:07:16 > 0:07:19and was looking at the surface of the rockpool.

0:07:19 > 0:07:24There was a leaf making its slow way across the water.

0:07:24 > 0:07:28Reginald was keeping a watchful eye on the seagull,

0:07:28 > 0:07:33when he also noticed the leaf coming towards him.

0:07:33 > 0:07:37"Interesting," he thought.

0:07:37 > 0:07:42"That must be one of those newfangled clockwork leaves

0:07:42 > 0:07:45"that can sail themselves."

0:07:45 > 0:07:49Reginald didn't always get things quite right, did he, Salty?

0:07:49 > 0:07:52"Psst!" said the leaf.

0:07:52 > 0:07:57Reginald was a little surprised, now the leaf was talking to him.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00It really was a very clever leaf.

0:08:00 > 0:08:06"Yes, Mr Leaf," he whispered, "Can I help?"

0:08:06 > 0:08:09"I'm not a leaf," said the leaf.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12"You look like a leaf," said Reginald.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15"It's me, Sally!" said Sally.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19And she popped her head out from under the leaf.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21"We need your help, oh, great, wise limpet."

0:08:21 > 0:08:25But before Sally could say anything else,

0:08:25 > 0:08:30there was a swoosh and the leaf suddenly shot up in the air

0:08:30 > 0:08:34with Andrew and Sally holding on to it. "Yikes!"

0:08:34 > 0:08:38The seagull had grabbed the leaf in its beak

0:08:38 > 0:08:41and was now inspecting it carefully.

0:08:41 > 0:08:46It gave the leaf a great shake and... "Whoa!"

0:08:46 > 0:08:51Andrew and Sally let go and went flying back into the water.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54Splish! Splosh!

0:08:54 > 0:08:55SALTY WHINES

0:08:55 > 0:08:58The seagull peered down into the rockpool

0:08:58 > 0:09:03as Sally and Andrew spun round and round in a long trail of bubbles.

0:09:03 > 0:09:10They landed with a big bump on the fat, black end of the hooter.

0:09:10 > 0:09:15And then...they found out what it was.

0:09:15 > 0:09:18Because the hooter let out a watery...

0:09:18 > 0:09:20HONKING

0:09:20 > 0:09:26A stream of honky bubbles shot poor Buster straight out of his new home

0:09:26 > 0:09:28and up to the surface of the rockpool,

0:09:28 > 0:09:33where he burst out in a fountain of water right in the seagull's face!

0:09:33 > 0:09:35Buster flipped over the seagull's head

0:09:35 > 0:09:37and splashed back into the rockpool.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40Then, with a startled squawk, the seagull...

0:09:40 > 0:09:42flew off as fast as he could.

0:09:42 > 0:09:46He didn't want to be around if the rockpool was honking

0:09:46 > 0:09:50and blasting hermit crabs at him. Oh, no!

0:09:50 > 0:09:54Down below, Andrew and Sally cheered.

0:09:54 > 0:09:58Now they finally knew what their object was.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00It was...

0:10:00 > 0:10:02a seagull honker.

0:10:02 > 0:10:04Yes!

0:10:04 > 0:10:08Buster floated back down to them, feeling a little dazed,

0:10:08 > 0:10:12as you would if you'd just been blasted at a seagull.

0:10:12 > 0:10:16Bertrum was so pleased with the seagull honker

0:10:16 > 0:10:21that he bustled over and said, "The seagull honker can stay."

0:10:21 > 0:10:24- Everybody cheered. - ALL CHEER

0:10:24 > 0:10:27Later, Buster cancelled his sofa delivery

0:10:27 > 0:10:30and moved back into his old home,

0:10:30 > 0:10:34which seemed a lot safer than living inside a seagull honker.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37And, finally, Bertrum announced

0:10:37 > 0:10:40that they should celebrate getting rid of the seagull.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43So, the little rockpoolers had a big party

0:10:43 > 0:10:46that lasted till the end of the day.

0:10:48 > 0:10:52When Sue and I looked up from the rockpool,

0:10:52 > 0:10:55we both wondered where Ernie was.

0:10:55 > 0:10:59"Why don't you use your hooter to get his attention?" said Sue.

0:10:59 > 0:11:03Well, this was a good idea, but when I looked for it, it was gone.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06We looked around, but we couldn't find it anywhere.

0:11:06 > 0:11:11Then, suddenly, I heard a familiar sound.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14- It was my car hooter. - HONKING

0:11:14 > 0:11:20We both looked over at the beach and there was Ernie with his dad

0:11:20 > 0:11:23and three wonderful ice creams.

0:11:23 > 0:11:27He was honking the hooter to get our attention.

0:11:27 > 0:11:31"Ice creams," he shouted. "Get your ice creams!"

0:11:31 > 0:11:33JACK CHUCKLES

0:11:33 > 0:11:36Well, we dashed back over to him and he laughed.

0:11:36 > 0:11:40"You left your car hooter when you went over to the rockpools.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42"I picked it up, I knew it'd be useful."

0:11:42 > 0:11:45Well, it had worked

0:11:45 > 0:11:49and we all settled down to a wonderful ice cream each.

0:11:49 > 0:11:54Oh! And then we played and played

0:11:54 > 0:11:56until it was time for us to go home.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58JACK CHUCKLES

0:11:58 > 0:12:00And the tide came in

0:12:00 > 0:12:05and covered the rockpool like a great seaweedy blanket.

0:12:15 > 0:12:18- JACK CHUCKLES - And from then on,

0:12:18 > 0:12:21we always honked the hooter to get each other's attention,

0:12:21 > 0:12:25especially when there was ice cream to be eaten.

0:12:25 > 0:12:26JACK SIGHS

0:12:26 > 0:12:28HONKING

0:12:28 > 0:12:32Ernie, there's an ice cream waiting for you at the Mermaid!

0:12:32 > 0:12:35Oh, on my way! ERNIE CHUCKLES

0:12:35 > 0:12:40So, why don't you join us for some more Rockpool Tales next time?

0:12:40 > 0:12:44Bye-bye. Come on, Salty, ice-cream time.

0:12:44 > 0:12:46You can have a nice biscuit

0:12:46 > 0:12:48and I'll have the ice cream.
